Holy moly... this place was so good! Such a new hidden gem. I was so impressed with how clean the restaurant was and how serious they are about staying covid compliant. They wore masks and gloves and had a very good ordering system to keep everyone away from each other and safe. You can tell they cared about public health and safety. We had dinner (I ordered 3 things cause I couldn't decide) and I came back the next morning for breakfast with my kids. They loved EVERYTHING! For dinner I had 3 items that I am usually very picky with: -lobster Mac n cheese: after living in New England I have been obsessed with this dish. The lobster was perfect (and not rubbery like some places) and the cheese had such a great flavor. The bacon was such a great flavor bonus! -Shrimp and Grits: the happy surprise here was the perfectly cooked fried green tomato on top. I am so picky with my fried green tomatoes and these were exactly how I like mine. Crunchy on the outside and the tomato was cooked al dente on the inside. The grits and shrimp were excellent. -beef short ribs: this was my top fave. The balsamic glaze was great (I'm a balsamic snob) and the short ribs were perfectly tender on the inside and seared to perfection on the outside. That just elevated the dish! I now want my short ribs to be seared always. For breakfast I had the Avocado Toast on sourdough and it blew me away. It was huge and full of veggies. I was feeling heavy from all of the dinners I ate the night before (I swear I shared some with my family) and the veggies really made me feel great. The asparagus was tender with a little crisp, the pickled onions on top were so good (I've been craving them) and the balsamic glaze was the icing on the cake (always need the acid on avo toast)! To drink I had the beet lemonade for dinner and breakfast. So good and I crave it as well! My kids had the hot chocolate (I stole some and it was a good cocoa that they used) and some pastries. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. My friend and I both got sick and vomited after dining here. The bread is stale. The food took about an hour and a half to come out. I tried the polenta and I basically took a few bites and it such an awful after taste that I nearly spit it out and stopped eating. The waitress asked me if I liked it and I told her it tasted too salty and that I felt sick after eating it. She removed the plate. She returned and said the following: "this might seem weird but I actually went and tasted your food and there's no salt in it. Clearly you aren't adjusted to the sauce we use so next time you come in you need to state your salt preferences." What???? She charged me for everything and made it seem like it was my fault for not liking something. I did not ask her to remove the charge but I thought it would be common courtesy. This place is horrible. Stay away. Expensive and the food makes people sick! read more

The food is exceptional in flavor, but often, it's too artsy and very hard to actually enjoy. As an example, I had the cauliflower tacos the other weekend and while they were delicious, they instantly fell apart and had to be eaten with a fork and knife. I'm so glad my we finally got to visit this spot. The place was open with outside patio seating. We were greeted with with enthusiasm and good vibes which is always a plus for me when it comes to customer service. The cashier also seemed excited to answer any questions and gladly gave an in depth description and I was grateful for that. We decided to take stuff togo because we thought the day was warmer than it was. When we ordered we got the the cold brew, a coconut oat milk latte and an apple juice. The cold brew was cold brew. The latte was a tad bit on the extremely sweet side so next time I will ask for less sweetener but the lavender rosehip latte looked yummy so I may want to try that next time. My son was a happy camper with his apple juice. For breakfast we got the BASIC the POWER and the ROOTS with a side of some fireeeeeee pumpernickel bread and sourdough. Sooo the foood was amazinnnnggg.. the roots had this super tasty curry aoli, greens, eggs, beets, potatoes, and we added chicken sausage. The curry aoli made the dish that much more flavorful and I wanted to just drive back for more sauce hah. I would say ordering to go or even in house next time I'll ask for Sauce on side so I have more control but I did not mind that it was smothered all over because it was delicious. The Power had chards, eggs, quinoa, goat cheese, asparagus, avocado, potatoes and tofu and everything really worked together but in my opinion It was the goat cheese for me! The basic was pretty basic. Also I did feel like it was a little heavy on the salt side. The only thing I feel like I didn't really care for was the chicken sausage. I really wanted a typical breakfast sausage. Maybe patties or I dunno like a small breakfast link but it wasn't bad and it was still eaten. I did feel like it was a sausage for a fancy hot link or a Jambalaya. I usually love large portion sizes to share or for left overs but I did feel bad throwing a lot alway so I felt a little over served. I know who complains about that. I just feel guilty throwing food away. Next time I can order two and share with the three of us rather than getting three items. Overall my experience was a great one and we'll definitely be back. I also wanted to note that I think this is a place where you really have to appreciate nutrients and flavorful dishes so I think it's a perfect spot for foodies, people who appreciate a nutritious meal and people who love flavor. Neat Underground at the Red House kitchen was a very pleasant experience. The food was cleverly creative, thoughtfully prepared, and warmly served. We tried a saucy meatloaf, farmer's market tacos, a gorgeous cheeseboard, and the kids had pasta exactly how they like it - - simple, with butter. I was also especially pleased by the beer selection. Instead of boring old tipples like Corona or Heineken the beer selection had Novo Brazil ales (a local brewery) and Mikkeller, among others. The desserts were crowdpleasers, and the menu changes monthly. And as the weather warms (the space is an outdoor covered annex to the main restaurant), there won't be a more delightful place for dinner in all of Imperial Beach. Run, don't walk! read more

My review is long overdue at this point, Neat Underground is by far the best spot in I.B. and one of my favorite restaurants in the entire San Diego area as well! The food is beyond delicious and with a seasonally rotating menu there is always some new, amazing dish to try. Personally I think the menu is the PERFECT blend of rich and indulgent, and bright and fresh ingredients. They use tons of fresh locally sourced herbs in their dishes which I adore also. Pre COVID we dined in and the service was amazing, Chef Alynn & her partner Emmi ran a two woman show by themselves most nights and the wait times for food were still no longer than what I experience at tons of larger kitchens on a busy weekend night. They are such a sweet team and their passion for what they are doing shows! Ordering to go food has always been a great experience also, with an easy system for contactless pickup, and the food somehow still looking beautiful in to go containers. Pre-pandemic, we had the pleasure of dining in a few times. Located in the Red House Restaurant, this extraordinary pop-up has morphed during these crazy times into a wonderful take-out . We travel 25 miles each way to come enjoy Chef Alynn's amazing cooking, and tonight was no different. My partner-in-crime ordered the Lobster BLT with Old Bay Salt Potatoes and enjoyed it thoroughly. Large, chunky pieces of lobster with crisp, perfectly done bacon was fabulous. Our visiting niece ordered Chip and Randy's Pasta and it disappeared before any of the rest of us got a bite, but she said it was terrific. I enjoyed the Fried Green Tomato burger that was juice and had so many wonderful goodies on top. Scrumptious! We ordered the Neat Summer Salad and an extra order of Old Bay salt potatoes and both were flavorful and a treat. So much food---we have some for tomorrow, too. Chef Alynn and Emie make it easy to pre-order and they bring it out so there is no contact--all very safe during these pandemic times.
