Sorta hard to categorize Millie's offerings since there is a New England vibe, while at the same time featuring Tacos. While serving lunch and dinner, weekend brunch doesn't get much better. Start with the Burrata (cow milk cheese) which is creamy and comforting. Continuing the "beach" theme - go with the Steps Beach Quesadilla which is lobster, zucchini and Monterey Jack. Salads more your thing then try the Great Point - which is shrimp, mango, peanuts and sprouts. Drink menu is also awesome. Bloody Mary's are super tasty and made to your spec. We dined at Millie's last night. The service was ok and the food was alright albeit overpriced. Normally I'd not leave a bad review in these circumstances however we witnessed TWO mice running around the floor of the restaurant as well as climbing on the bench adjacent to where we were sitting. We pointed this out to the waitress and she just kind of shrugged her shoulders. Saying they were in there because "it's cold outside". SOMEBODY CALL THE HEALTH INSPECTOR. No discount or accommodations were offered even though we were completely disgusted- so there you have it. We paid $350 for a mediocre meal, some drinks, and clear health code violations. This was a bummer. I've been to the one on Nantucket and it's a better situation. I'll start with the good stuff: nice vibes, beautiful patio on a nice night. If it's humid (as most DC summer nights are, let's be honest), the humidity wafts into the inside and your glasses, etc. will be dripping with the condensation. So don't go for the AC. The chips and salsa/queso were top notch. Okay, on to the challenging things. The service was very hit or miss. The server just straight up disappeared. I had to walk to the bar and ask to pay our check. Also: so sad about the clam chowder which should be renamed to celery chowder. Literally 2/3 of the cup of "clam" chowder was huge chunks of celery. Ew. (I did like the crispy bacon and chives.) Please, at a bare minimum, list celery as an ingredient on the menu just like you list all of the other ingredients, especially since the chowder is mostly celery. I'm from New England and we do not serve clam chowder like they do here. I had the tacos which were decent. Hearty and good. Okay then the ice cream stand. I ordered a scoop of mint chip and while good, the $5 "scoop" was half an actual scoop. I ate it in three bites. It's pictured below (and no, there was no ice cream in the actual cone part - that was air). It might have been the person scooping who just didn't understand. I enjoyed Millie's. We had a large group and they were able to accommodate us at their booths near the kitchen. Came on a weekday and it was pretty busy outside on the patio. Our server was very nice and attentive and made recommendations for food and cocktails. I enjoyed the Blueberry lemonade cocktail and the frosé. The frosé was dangerously good and quite strong. The food was pretty good. I had the steak quesadilla which was loaded with steak, veggies and cheese. The portion was pretty large. We came here on a Saturday and sat outside. I can't speak about what other people got, but I got the lobster roll with coleslaw and was very happy with it. It was perfection! The service was really good. We had informed our server that we would be sitting there for a while since it was our first time together since 2020. She was understanding about that and checked in on us to make sure we knew that we weren't forgotten. On a Monday night the restaurant was packed, both indoors and outside. Outside as you enter you walk through a large area with picnic tables and umbrellas. As we dined we had to talk louder and louder. I would say this is not the place to be on a first date (at least not indoors). You would not be able to hear each other. Ok, I was very pleased with the food. The menu is extensive and has a lot of variety. They offer many types of tacos and quesadillas but also a variety of salads and entrees. I had the sea scallops over a mixture of corn and avocado in a creamy sauce. It was quite delightful. The desserts were the stars! How can you go wrong the banana cheese cake over banana bread! Yum!!! The strawberry shortcake cake was spot on. Everything you would expect it to be. The side of vanilla ice cream was perfectly creamy! I would definitely come back to try there other dishes. Next time I would want to try there tuna dishes (salad or entree). This place was adorable. Outside open venue which is great for summer time. Very busy inside but the staff was very polite. Sat outside on high table. Our waitress gave great recommendations as far as drinks and how we desired them. Both easily delicious and not juiced down. Food was spectacular. I got rockfish tacos and forgot my allergy of avocados‍ but the waitress was sooo nice and end up getting me something else. Which was incredible! Their scallop tacos were to die for. You can make reservations but they save a lot of space for walk-ins. Outdoor seating makes it easy to enjoy good weather, dine with kids, and stay COVID-safe. There's even a walk up ice cream window! My foodie sisters were impressed by the food - the Pan Seared Scallops were perfectly seared without overcooking the inside; not an easy feat apparently. While I would welcome additional vegetarian options, The Casino tacos were delicious and unique enough that I won't mind ordering it multiple times. We had to ask for both rounds, drink refills, silverware, and napkins, even when the food came out! Millie's is the true neighborhood joint in Spring Valley in NW DC. If you drive by on a warm weathered day, the crowds will inspire you to stop to grab a table. The inside space is large and they have an equally big outdoor patio with an ice cream stand in the middle of it. The menu is Mexican and a bit of everything. My wife and I opted for appetizers and the burrata and strawberries and potstickers were great. Our toddler's chicken finger platter was enjoyable. This is a dependable place to get fish/seafood; always hopping when I stop by. The consistent crowds confirm that Millie knows what she's doing. The various menus are a mix of classic recipes, salads and trendy items. The Nantucket/New England influence is found a bit in the cooking, but does not dominate. I appreciate the smoked bluefish pate (appetizer); it's smooth, with just the right touch of smoldering. The rainbow trout entrée is noteworthy and arrives with a most spectacular spoon summer corn bread. It's just about the best darn thing I've tasted this year. It's really more of a soufflé--spongy, buttery, and luscious. The fish tacos are smartly done; enjoy the one called Hither Creek which features rockfish. However the rice salad that accompanies seems an afterthought. All walks of life are eating here: families; professionals, couples, singles, groups of all sorts, young and old. The seating is tight inside, particularly when it's going at full tilt. Outdoors, there is more room to stretch out. Service was prompt and friendly, the food was good. The reason for the three stars is the price. A casual dinner out, on beer benches and at happy hour time (there was no happy hour at Millie's) should not cost USD 50 per person. 1st - service was one of the worst experiences you could imagine. Love being completely ignored by the wait staff. Our specific waitress clearly did not want to serve us. Never asked or checked in to see if we liked our food despite constantly walking past us and chatting up her co-workers. 2nd - food had no taste, no flavor, no imagination. Yeah I wish I could give a 3.5 but I can't. Was sat directly next to another table in use when there were many open tables around. Not a huge deal for me but generally a no-no. The tomato cucumber salad was like 50% red onion? Come on guys what are we doing. No place to place my used silverware between appetizers and entree (maybe my napkin? It was busy on my lap). The potstickers and chicken sandwich were excellent which ultimately left me pretty satisfied. Almost reasonably priced in DC for appetizers entree and tip (41 total for me) but I have had significantly more satisfying experiences for that kind of money (steak frites DC, probably the gold standard of 40-50$ worth of food I have tried in DC), and the things I experienced that brought it down to a 3 are free or (I would imagine) marginally costly to fix. Overall decent but there are better options if 40$ is significant to spend on yourself in one meal. In addition to this the appetizer and entree I ordered were some of the most cost friendly options in their respective categories. read more
