We have never been to Murphys before and a neighbor of ours in the East Bay recommended Millaire. We are so glad they did as it set the tone for a wonderful few days in Murphys. There are so many wineries in town so it would be easy to get lost in the crowd. Our experience was very special thanks to the warm hospitality provided by Linda. From the moment we arrived it was like we knew each other. She is so kind and very engaging. My husband and I are in hospitality and customer facing businesses so we have a deep understanding of what makes a good experience. In the case of our visit it was Linda who made all the difference. I have visited this tasting room many times over the past several years and have always found my visits there to be very enjoyable. The wines are wonderful-the best selection I have come across in Murphys. They have a lovely patio area in the back which adds to the nice atmosphere there. It is always such a pleasure to see Linda Foss, one of the many tasting room associates when I visit. Linda is kind, super friendly and makes the Milliaire experience always pleasurable. I have always enjoyed stopping at Milliare during my trips to Murphys. Their tasting room on Main Street seems to be in an old gas station, but they have created a large tasting bar complete with a back patio. This place can get very crowded on the weekends and during special events, but I was lucky to visit on a weekday and was the only one around. Milliaire is focused mostly on Zinfandel, but they also have several other options. I always appreciate the quality of the wine, especially tasting the differences between soils and elevations on the varietals. I especially like their dessert wines, including a Port and Late Harvest options. This may be the essential Murphys winery - centrally located, fun and approachable, and reasonably priced. read more

Was just in town for the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance's 16th Annual Presidents' Wine Weekend, and made a stop here...well worth the experience! Our attendant Jennie was awesome! She was quick to pour and share all the nuances of the wines we were tasting, and even offered her own personal opinions on what were her favorites and why. I really enjoyed some of the wines and wound up buying a mixed case, which she graciously held for us to pick up later. Definitely worth stopping by, if only for some good wine conversation and a bunch of inexpensive sips. read more

This place is a little hidden gem, we had a great time and the staff was great. Patrick our server poured our wines and explained each one with great knowledge. Patrick was very friendly, helpful and the patio was adorable. There was a few wines that we really enjoyed, in fact we bought two bottles. The wines in which we could not decide Patrick poured a couple additional tastes into our cups for decision making. Then there was Ms. Linda, gracious she was so friendly and kind and kept our attention while we enjoyed our wines just conversating. The overall experience really deserves a 5 star rating, but it gets 4 for now. We stopped in for a wine tasting on Sunday. It is $3 but waived if you buy a bottle, which we did. The staff explained the different wines and gave us some history. It was enjoyable and fun. I would suggest going here. read more

Downtown Murphys tasting room Not only was the wine out-of-this-world, the gentleman pouring was phenomenal! He was a VERY mature person who had lived in the area forever. In fact when we purchased the book on the history of the Murphys area, he pointed out a picture in the book of his property. We liked it so much, we went back twice in the three days we were there. We visited 10 of the 11 downtown tasting rooms (the 11th was closed due to a family event) with our retriever companions, the were very welcomed in Milliaire. In fact, they had a bird in a cage in the corner of the room that kept the boys entertained while we talked. The wine was great. We're gearing up to go to Murphys for a few days soon and will definitely sample and purchase again. Why a 4 instead of a 5? First, I'm a pretty tough grader, 5's don't come easy. Second, it's a bit difficult to get to Milliaire because the sidewalk system in town is a bit iffy. Sidewalks stop, start, disappear... It would be helpful if the various businesses and town officials would get together to improve the walking situation. We understand the desire to preserve quaint, however safety is more important. Quaint can be designed into the mix with a little work. Murphys is a wonderful destination that is growing, quickly. On one hand we will be sad to see the old Murphys go, but on the other hopefully the powers-that-be will be wary of too rapid growth. 11/24/07 We took our "boys" Cisco and Barkley to Milliaire this afternoon. What a pleasant place. We bought several bottles of wine while our dogs were entertained by their winery bird, Lefty. We will be stopping back to buy a case of wine before we head home. Milliaire is our one of our favorite wineries to go to when we're in Murphys. There a lot of tasting rooms, but Milliaire is a definite stop. Their Ghiradelli Zin is the best and you can't go wrong with their sparkling wine either. Great prices for great wine! The staff there is very friendly and always greets you with smiles. We've usually had Jana pour for us when we're there tasting. She's awesome. There's also an older lady with short hair that is as equally pleasant to work with, can't remember her name at this time. This was one of em.....a server regailed us with a song, and the marketing girl (also serving!) poured us amazing zinfandels. Best part of Murphys? Tasting is almost always free! I read the reviews and people love the personal attention here. It's true the service is by far 5 stars! I found the actual wine however to be 3 stars which rounds us off to a 4 star review. The wine may not be why you really go here. The experience yes, the wine not so much. If you are a napa going wine enthusiast all the charm in the world may not keep you from pouring out the wine. If you don't care so much about that then you will have a good time with 12 tastings (mostly Zin and a champagne) and great social conversation. I bought a bottle of the champagne since so few wineries make it in this area. It was good for the area which is not a white grape friendly place. I did feel like this winery had some good history and honest wine. Some of the other wineries have learned to embellish the wine to give it creativity and structure. What you grow is what you get here and they'd do great going that route outright. (There I go with a marketing plan again!) Honest Wine. lol read more

First time at this winery. Diane was our pourer. She was unbelievable. So friendly and helpful. Se not only poured fabulously, while describing foods and spices that go well with each taste, but she also recommended places in the area to go for fun. She's also a docent at Big Trees Park and recommended trails and hiking, as well as water areas. We wanted to try a port, which she poured for us, including a taste of some fine chocolates that went well with it. We promptly bought the chocolates too! Her Information on everything was so helpful. She was very knowledgable about the wine, the owner Steve Millier, food, chocolates, hiking, and other fun. Ended up buying a case and a half of wine! We are from the mid west and have been to the Murphy's/Angels Camp area twice. The second time, Murphy's was our destination specifically for the wine. Milliaire is one of our top choices and we continue to be member of their wine club. Wine quality is outstanding. A great winery in a fun little town of Murphys. The tasting room was a fun experience, with a very knowledgeable server, serving up loads of information with each pour. Not usually a huge fan of reds, but one sip of the 2014 Clockspring Zin, and I knew it was going home with me that night. If you want a Napa Valley style winery go here. What's a Napa Valley style winery? Charge $10 a head for tastings, and then find out that sure they give you a per bottle credit on the tasting fee but it's person. So 3 people $30 to taste, buy a bottle and you only get $10 off! There are so many good wineries in the area that have such great products, that you buy because it's a great product not because they force you to pay. I just spent $200 today at some other local wineries that waived the tasting fee because I purchased. I'd recommend many of the good wineries in the area (Newsome Harlow, Bodega, Hatcher, Frogs Tooth, Twisted Oak, etc). Skip this one. read more

Millaire may be the most underrated wine from the Murphys region. The wine maker and owner is one of the longest active in the region, and serves as wine maker for several other wineries that shoot for a mass market. His winery serves locals, and we buy a lot. His Simply Red blend is probably the best blended red around, and one of the least expensive. The chardonay is excellent, and if you want more varieties they have it. The tasting room is adequate, but not fancy being based in what was once a 1930s gas station on Main Street. But the wines are excellent. read more

Looking at the building this place is in, you wouldn't really expect the wines to be that good....it's kinda run-down looking. But these guys have some very good stuff! I love their gewürztraminer (and I think they're the only winery in Murphys to offer one....we didn't find another this weekend). My husband really likes their Clockspring Zinfandel. We visited Milliaire Winery this past Saturday, March 5th. I was very excited to visit here, as 2 different wine friends had recommended here from previous visits. We were lucky enough to be served by Liz, one of the owners of Milliaire. She was so nice, and we had a blast with her. Hopefully we will be invited back. We tasted many of their wines, and were very happy with the tastings. Some of our favorites were the Sparking White Wine, Gewurtztraminer, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cab, Petitte Sirah, and Zin. I personally liked the Cab and Syrah, and wound up buying the Syrah. The winery is located in an old gasoline store, and has a great feel to the tasting room. There is just enough room to drink at the bar, and then wander around to look at all the items for sale. Make this one of your must stops on a trip to Murphys ! read more
