I have an experience worth sharing. It happened tonight here at Mill Plain Diner. You'll enjoy this, and my story will prepare you for a one-of-a-kind rudeness that may befall you if you visit this place. First, a quick comment about the food. All we had were omelets, but they were nothing special. Priced decently though. Tasteless home fries. (They were closing on a Sunday night at 11 and we got there around 10:15.) My whole wheat toast was pretty awful and had what seemed like tasteless fake butter on it. The waitress was friendly and kind, but there was some older female manager (or host) that asked me to pay so she could close out the register. No problem. I gave her my card and she asked if I wanted to leave a tip on it. The bill was about $17, so I told her $4, which is about a 25% tip. Because I literally hadn't slept in two days, I was delirious and used the phrase, "a nice four dollars," when asked how much. When I said the word "nice" I was just trying to say that the waitress was great and nice, but it came out a little funny, I admit. SO, here's what happened next: the older manager woman, who spoke Spanish mostly, suddenly starts making fun of me to the waitress a few feet away, mockingly repeating the phrase "nice four dollars." She went on and on with it, probably wanting my friend and me to hear it. I just remained quiet and allowed this crazy woman to rudely make fun of me and my 25% tip. THEN, as if that weren't bad enough, she decided to really make sure her rude behavior hit its mark. She returned to our table, gave me back my card and said DIRECTLY to my face, "I added your NICE four dollar tip" in a mocking tone while smiling. She then immediately spoke Spanish over her shoulder to her associate at the bar. The English was just for me, and she wanted to really mock me to my face, even though I gave a 25% tip. Granted, $4 is nothing much, considering the bill was small, but it was still a good tip, and we were easy customers who were really pleasant throughout our time there. Even after she mocked us jeeringly, we were quiet in return. I just didn't understand why she insisted on being so rude, and directly to us no less. Who does this? I cannot possibly return after this experience, because this woman appears unstable, and I don't know if she or her staff would spit in our food. And it says something about the owner and management. So, if you want to be openly derided for giving a 25% tip and saying something a little silly because you're sleep deprived, this is the place for you. My God, never again. read more

I have been going to the windmill diner since the early 2000's miss the old owners the staff was great, granted I haven't experienced anything from the new owners yet. Today I got a whole new experience from a member of wait staff who used to serve us all the time. She said "Oh no!" Where we were seated they had stained glass dividers and the rail under them has about A half inch of dirt. The breakfast omelets are great, the thing I liked was that they were loaded, I mean the Farmer omelette was full of meat, every bite had cheese. The coffee was OK, the cookies were not what I expected they were more like scones then cookies. I did not have the waffles but they looked GREAT. We have missed the classic diners that reside mostly in the Northeast. Our breakfast was excellent. The veggie omelet had just enough veggies and the homefries had the right amount of crunch. The pancakes were perfectly cooked and scramble eggs were cooked as requested. Our coffee was exceptional because it was not burnt or bitter! FOOD POISONING! My Fiance and I went here last night. We've been there quite a few times, food has always been sub par but its cheap and portions are good. Last night was a different story. My fiancé got VIOLENTLY sick last night after eating a chicken wrap from here. She was up all night throwing up and with Diarrhea. We almost ended up going to the emergency room. A fast, fading star....see ya.. We have been coming here for the last 20 years as we loved the menu quality and service. The menu and specials always had something for each of us to enjoy and the value and quality was always there, until the last few times we visited. It seems like the owner and staff have given up. The decor needs a refresh, the service is slow and the servers are cranky and depressed and do little to make you feel welcome or appreciated. If you need something extra, like Mayo you asked for on the side, but they forgot, you are treated with a huff and sneer. The food quality and quantity has also changed and is no longer of the standard or value we enjoyed for so may years. I love poached eggs, so at 1pm, when I asked for this, I was told, "nope, you can't have this as we do not boil water after 11 am"? The owners seem content to let things slide on service, quality and respect as they no longer ask "how was everything" as they know that would open a big discussion which the owner then becomes even more grumpy and rude. We were really looking forward to a diner style meal. Boy, were we disappointed. First, they have a huge menu, but they were out of the first 4 things we ordered. We settled on eggplant Parmesan subs. They clearly don't make to them in house. Both these and the onion rings were made elsewhere and frozen. My wife and I had breakfast here on Wednesday, 12/26/12. I had 2 eggs over easy, ham, English muffin, home fries and coffee. My wife had scrambled eggs, toast, home fries, and coffee. Our orders were easy and should be perfect. Unfortunately, my wife had a large egg shell in her eggs and the home fries tasted like they were sitting in the grill for hours. Stopped in for what we thought would be a great breakfast to start the day, what a mistake! The place is very dated with maintenance needed throughout. When we were seated I couldn't figure out what the "blue hue" was when all the lights were incandescent, I then realized we were under the broken skylight which was covered by a well worn blue tarp on the roof side. We should have realized how bad the place is after seeing this. The server was very pleasant and I ordered pancakes and eggs which she returned with in about two minutes, after asking how she that so quickly, she said "it might be someone else's order and laughed. After starting to butter and cut the pancakes, I found them to be hard as a rock! They were most likely frozen and not fresh made AND still hard. Let me first say that I seldom write reviews but because the service was just poor, I felt compelled to do so. When George is on, usually at night when we frequent this diner, everyone is spot on and in great spirits, in addition to everything being efficient. Today was not the case. Maybe it was due to it being a Sunday and very little patrons were here, but I would recommend that employees learn customer service etiquette as opposed to sitting around and treating this diner as a social club. My reasons for the ONE STAR are below: 1.) When handling food, one should not have servers work if they're sick. There's nothing worse than a waitress sneezing, wiping their nose and coughing into their hands and then serving you a plate of food with a thumb inside. 2.) There's no need for patrons to hear about what's going on with other diners owned by this specific owner or what internal problems there are. 3.) Walking into the kitchen and yelling isn't really good management and again, patrons don't need to hear that. 4.) When paying, no smile or thank you, just grab the card, don't ask if we'd like to leave a tip and just sign and go. RUDE! RUDE! RUDE! As a business owner, I understand the value of customer service and these employees should know that there paycheck comes from the patrons whom they serve and with numerous diners in Danbury, people have choices. Needless to say, we usually come here once or twice per week at night but because of today, we have no intentions of coming back. A relative took me to their favorite after church breakfast place. I shared some of the poor reviews but off we go. Our group of four was seated in about ten minutes as they were very busy. Probably another ten for a waitress and almost 30 minutes for food. Even a busy breakfast place should be able to pump food out quicker than this. House made corned beef hash was lacking in flavor. The food here is excellent, the prices are very reasonable, and the service was great! We ordered the Florentine Eggs Benedict and stack of 3 pancakes (the real Vermont maple syrup is a little extra, but definitely worth it), both of which were delicious and sizable portions. They usually have a wait on the weekends around breakfast / brunch time, but it's a large establishment, so long lines only amount to ~10-15 minute waits.
