This is a classic diner with a great menu. I got a chicken fajita health bowl with riced cauliflower, quinoa and edamame which was delicious. There's also the option to have this with brown rice so be sure to ask for the riced cauliflower, quinoa and edamame. The staff was very friendly, always made sure our water glasses were full and checking on our meals. The seating was very comfortable and there was background music playing. Haven't been here for a while. This used to be my go-to, tried and true Diner, and I'm saddened to say my experience today was awful! First, I will say my waitress was lovely and attentive. The food however was simply bad. Ordered a Greek omelette....the serving was small (only used 2 eggs?) the feta cheese was lacking, spinach tasted like it was barely thawed frozen and tomatoe pieces were way under-ripe. Side of hash browns were barely warm and the toast was cold. My friend had French toast with a sunny side egg, which he labeled as being just eh! Our party of 10 got fed 45 minutes after arriving because the "policy" is that all the orders have to delivered at the same time. Some cold, some hot. Luck o the draw :) So everyone in the room who arrived after us got fed first, and management (three at the register) left one waitress to handle every aspect of service at our table. I have been a regular at the Mill Plain Diner for some time. Until today, I have always been pleased with the service. Today I forgot my wallet. I apologized profusely and offered to call with a credit card number as soon as I got home in approximately twenty minutes. Imagine my surprise when the default reaction was to threaten me with the police. I made an honest mistake, I offered to rectify it immediately, and that's how I'm treated. The manager (I believe her name was Camilla) refused to take the card over the phone. I explained that I need to leave for JFK shortly and did not intend to miss my flight. How many restaurants can't accept a credit card over the phone? What a way to treat a regular customer. I will never set foot in that place again after being treated so poorly. read more

My daughter and I went to the Mill Plain Diner for the first time yesterday, before heading to the nearby Danbury Fair Mall. It was such a pleasant and tasty experience I had to write this review. From walking into the front door and being greeted in a truly welcoming manner, to our helpful and pleasant server, who was attentive, the customer service was too notch. My First Time At This Diner and so far everything is great. My husband and I decided to stop here for breakfast. I was greeted with warm and friendly Hello's when we walked through the door. The server was very polite and friendly as well. The coffee was ok but she brought it over very quickly. We only order breakfast sandwiches so you really can't go wrong with that. Mill Plain Diner (formally known as Windmill Diner I guess) has solid diner food. The service was good and the food was good. I had the meatloaf and my wife had the gyro. The gyro was actually very tasty, and they put it on some of the softest pita bread. The meat was so-so but the tzatziki sauce was good. The meatloaf came with a multiple choices for options. I had the French fries and the butternut squash, and both were good.... not GREAT but good. Bottom line, this place had a home cooked feel to it and the service was given to us with a smile. It may not be 5 star cuisine, but this place is a-ok in my book. If you're looking for a place to go for dinner, and you're reading this review. I would tell you to give it a try, support a local business, and go with the expectation of getting some solid diner food and fair prices. read more

The family was staying here nearby so came in for a late breakfast. All of our food came out fast and just like we ordered. Waitress was nice and efficient. Coffee was hot and good. Tried the carrot cake to go and loved it. Came back the next day with a big group for a late night dinner. Everything was served quickly and just like we ordered. I ordered the anti pasta salad with a balsamic dressing. Everything was fresh and delicious. Tried their cheese cake and wow. The service was quick and friendly. The place looks like it was recently remodeled. It was clean and new looking. I thought the prices were fair for the very large portions. First of all, the owner of this place needs to get his priorities in order. I was working an overnight, and had stopped at Starbucks to get a venti iced vanilla latte to keep me going for the next shift. The young girl at the front notified me that they have a no outside drinks policy. I said should I leave? She said "for next time" as anyone with a paying customer would logically reply. She sat me, and I ordered. I asked the owner for hot sauce, which they do not have. They only offer Tabasco, which I don't prefer but had to accept. He looked at me and my Starbucks drink, like I had committed a mortal sin. With disgust and pity, he reiterated that there are no outside drinks allowed. I again replied, "should I leave?" With my food that just arrived on the table. He looked with distaste and again emphasized robotically "no outside drinks" "I will get you a cup to put it in," which he never did. He then scolded the young woman working for him for apparently letting me in. As a paying customer, this is really not normal behavior. I think the owner of this establishment needs to work things out and ask himself "why are you really so scared of outside drinks and what did they ever do to you?" Also, please offer your customers real hot sauce (franks red hot or cholula) won't be going back here anytime soon. read more

Restaurant at 7 pm on Friday night was empty. Service was slow even though there seemed to be plenty of help. Restaurant was cold and waitstaff all had sweaters on. We were there this past Sunday am for breakfast. The staff were friendly and professional. We were pretty early so the place was less than 1/2 full. The food came out pretty quickly- the hot items were hot and the cold ones were cold. Everything was perfectly as expected. I had an egg white omelette with veggies and sausage. It was absolutely fine. No problems. My wheat toast was crispy and buttery. I also ordered some corn beef hash that was average at best. My file ordered oatmeal with berries and brown sugar. The bowl was huge. - she liked it, it was very good and the fruit was fresh. We also split another bowl of fresh berries that were great. I didn't try one but all the baked goodies looked great. This was a pleasant breakfast at a local diner. I wasn't expecting white tablecloth service and. Prices and didn't get them either. We've been going to this diner for many years. Recently the owners changed and it's clearly gone down hill. The last three times we've been there the orders are completely wrong. We specifically ask for no tomatoes due to allergies and yet they seem to make it on to every order. Take out is no better. They rarely pick up the phone and when they do, it is answered with an attitude. Clearly not the level of customer service that would make you want to buy there. We aren't going there again and don't recommend anyone else go there either. read more

We stopped in on Dec 27th while traveling north on I-84. We lived in the Danbury area a few years ago and the Diner has been renovated and updated. The place is much brighter. I could also appreciate new management who - despite being understaffed and with a very steady stream of customers - chipped in to bus and set tables and manage the waiting customers. We had a very nice lunch with soup and sandwiches - BLT, Tuna Melt and Chicken Salad. The sandwiches were huge. The Sourdough bread was fresh and sliced thick. Everyone enjoyed their meal. It did take a little while to get our food but the place was packed with holiday groups and travelers getting off of I-84. Our server was very friendly, explained the kitchen was slammed and thanked us for our patience. I thought the staff handled the crowd very well. Managers at the front really help. A good place to stop if I-84 N is heavy. Take Exit 2 to Mill Plain Rd. You can get back on I-84 further up at Exit 4 by going right out of the parking lot - Mill Plain turns into Lake Ave Ext to Exit 4. read more

I love diners. If I find a great diner, I can eat there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unfortunately, the Mill Plain Diner isn't a great diner; it's barely about average on its best day. Slow service, inattentive staff, average food. And, the biggest travesty: they use WHITE American cheese. EVERYONE, and I do mean EVERYONE, knows that the proper color for American cheese is YELLOW. We had ordered an appetizer and it came with the food! My omelette was not what i ordered and my father ordered a rueben and it sucked, the meat was as stiff as a board, there was only 3 pieces of meat, the sour kraut was on one side instead of spread out.. Once upon a time, this was the Wind Mill Diner. I visited there almost daily for many years. When the family found their children weren't interested in taking over, they sold it to owners of another Greek diner in Newtown CT. Most of the employees stayed, and new ones were added. It was made clear to the new owners that this was not a transient diner, easy off easy on, but instead a restaurant where the majority of patrons were regulars. The menu stayed mainly the same. Then they began to redo the place and make it into an obviously "DINER" look - steel, lots of red lights, half the counter cut away, mural of Italy on the wall demolished to make room for many, many windows. I didn't like it but oh well. The people were nice, the food was still the same. A couple of weeks ago, my daughter, who lives in Branford, told me that the place had been sold again to the owners of a couple of Greek diners down near the coast. I had been to one of them and I wasn't impressed. I asked a manager if it was true and he said it was. I asked if there would be many changes - he said not for a while. But last week there was suddenly a new menu, and tonight I found that a staple fish sandwich I ALWAYS ate is no longer available. The menu is not easy to follow - hard to find things you knew you liked. Prices are higher. Service has degenerated - spilled coffee on the floor not wiped up, tables not cleaned off, wait staff (many new) unable to get the order right. Transients can come if they want to. I hope regulars stay away from now on. read more

We have come here many times and have never experienced something like this. Disgusted beyond belief. The staff here is so kind and the owner is BEYOND rude. He just yelled at a waitress for helping an elderly lady try to find her 1955 class ring. When I told him he was out of line, he yelled at me. I reminded him that I was the customer and he was being disrespectful. My son didn't like that he was yelling at the waitress. I asked if he was the owner and he said yes. I told him he shouldn't speak to his employees this way, when all she was trying to do was help and he told me he didn't care. I told him he should, I am a customer and I care, and my 11 year old was hearing and seeing him yell at her. He didn't care what I thought. Unreal! The staff was super nice. Hey owner (I think John)... My husband works for a huge company up the street... You just lost their business and 1600 friends on Facebook (700 local), all know how rude you are now. When I was leaving and paying my check, he said thank you. I said don't thank me, you were rude. He told me that I didn't know the whole story. I told him that it didn't matter, he made it our business when yelling and my son was bothered by it. I told him he was acting like a shmuck... guess what, he told me I was a shmuck. Then I used a word that I am not proud of, but I Was SOOOO upset. He never once felt the need to just apologize. read more

My husband and I were passing through town on a New England road trip and felt like some diner food. This place is conveniently located right off a main road with designated entrance/exit zones. Plenty of parking and a handicap ramp entrance as well. It was a Sunday around 4:30-5:00 and there were maybe 5 or 6 tables filled. We were seated immediately and greeted by our waitress within a few minutes. We both ordered burgers-med. rare, and gravy fries. The burgers come with the usual toppings plus a split roasted green pepper, cole slaw and a pickle. Pretty good deal for the money. It took less than 10 minutes for us to receive our orders and they were cooked as requested. The food was good. The waitress was nice and attentive without hovering. I write fair reviews. If you question that, go back and read my other ones. One star, Period. This is the worst place I've eaten in at least 5 years. The food was awful, and when it got there, it was barely edible. The worst Turkey Club I've ever had and that's my go-to quick diner order. The bar b que sauce was gross. The food took forever to come and the waitress had to constantly be signaled for..... and there was barely anyone there. The guy sitting at the table next to us was mid-argument about how bad his dinner was. All the fried stuff was too dark, which means the oil is dirty. Here is the clincher though.... The owner has decided to do this weird thing with the bill. If you pay on a debit/credit card, the manager comes back to the table, asks you if you are going to tip on the card, then wants you to figure out the tip and adjust the bill before he swipes. Rather than swipe then they come back and you add the tip on, total and sign. He then cashed out my overage and tipped the waitress right in front of me. That is embarrassing and is not supposed to happen. I just wanted to get out of there or I would have refused to do it. Do not eat here. This was probably the worst dining experience I've had since I've moved to Danbury. 1. Waiter refused to substitute ham for bacon which were offered for the same price in the sides (not a huge problem) 2. Waiter didn't know the windmill breakfast which is essentially their breakfast special every diner has. Had to read it off the menu to know what was in it. 3. Waiter brought pancakes and eggs with a hair laying right on top 4. Waiter did not include sausage on the plate and asked me that's included in the meal?? 5. Waiter brought cold potatoes that didn't taste good either 6. The sausage though small, tasted pretty good 7. The owner or managers collecting money at the front were told it was the worst experience I've had at a restaurant in the 2 years I've lived here. Well I went to wind mill today and was very disappointed with not only the service but also the food. We ordered an appetizer which finally came with our lunch. The waitress screwed up the order. I got a Ruben with 4 pieces of corn beef all the sauerkraut was on one side. The meat was extremely tough. The fries were cold. The cheesy tater tots were good but not to cheesy. The waitress never came back to check on us. Was more wore about making it on time to a birthday. Might be time to find a new place to eat. read more
