The waitress working at Milkflower this afternoon is going to kill someone with an allergy if she doesn't get proper training on the menu soon. I've been coming to Milkflower for literal years and everyone here has consistently been so accommodating and attentive to my partner's vegetarian restriction. Today we were done working early and called at 3:30 to ask what time the lunch special (salad and a pie for $18) ran until. The woman who picked up said it ran until 5. We arrived just after 4. Once seated we asked again about the special - she confirmed it was still running and let us know that the salad was currently a Caesar salad. When we asked about the salad dressing, she told us it was vegetarian. The problem? It contained anchovies (the name of the dressing is lemon anchovy, printed on the menu). Even more concerning, our server appeared not to know what an anchovy was. For anyone with dietary restrictions, that's not a minor oversight -- it's a serious issue. If staff members are answering questions about ingredients, they should have a basic understanding of what's actually in the food they're serving. She went on to say there were no actual anchovies in it, that it was "just the name of the dressing." She again insisted there were no anchovies in it. When I pressed her further, she finally admitted that anchovies are blended into it. Again, I explained that means this dressing is not vegetarian, as literal fish are in it -- whether whole or blended, the dressing contains fish. When we explained the issue and asked about alternatives, none were offered. Not a different dressing, not a simple olive oil option, nothing. The complete lack of flexibility or effort to accommodate a reasonable dietary request was astonishing. She continued to offer the dressing on the side to my partner, which he cannot eat. 15 minutes later after ordering the salad with no dressing, the waitress came to our table to tell us the lunch special had actually ended at 4. We told her we called ahead and the woman we spoke to (presumably her since no one else was working, and since she herself believed it was still running when she sat us) said 5. There was no apology, no accommodation, no attempt to honor what we had been told over the phone -- just a shrug. For a restaurant that values customer service, especially for repeat customers, this was incredibly frustrating. We left without eating here. Mistakes happen. Phones get miscommunicated. Staff don't always have every answer. What made this experience so disappointing was the total absence of customer service at every step. We were given incorrect information, served misleading ingredient information, denied any reasonable accommodation, and offered no solution despite being loyal customers. Milkflower has always relied on its neighborhood reputation, but experiences like this make it difficult to justify returning. There are too many restaurants that value their customers and take dietary concerns seriously to settle for this level of indifference. If you have an actual food allergy (specifically seafood) please do your due diligence. If Milkflower management is reading this, please educate today's server that an anchovy is a fish, not just the name of a salad dressing, and that your lunch special ends at 4. Or hire a waitress who isn't so clueless. read more

Walking from Elmhurst to Astoria(yes it was that nice out finally) I looked for my first meal of the day. I looked at other people's lists of best Astoria eateries. There was overlap in terms of this place. Seeing as how I have a good wood fired artisan pizza place in my job this should be decent I said to myself. As I enter I'm greeted immediately with a smile by what seemed like the day manager. As I'm sat down and poured my water I almost am already convinced which pizza I want but I look through just to read the nice lists of ingredients and picture each pie mentally. I ordered this nice pie with sausage and grano padano and notice I can add certain toppings. I chose egg because why not make it a pizza brunch? Pizza comes quick and hot. Tastes delightfully sweet and the char adds personality. The place is nice and rustic, warm and inviting btw. I appreciate the runner/busser as they operated as I would( I am one myself). They were quick and efficient in turning the table that just left, making sure he cleans the table in the same motion. The sunlight revealed a dirty table next to me so not all is perfect there. I've ordered from Milkflower a few times for delivery and I've tried the Wu-Tang Clam, Van Dammer, and Willy Mo pies. All fantastic choices, but I got the Wu-Tang Clam this time around along with the wood-fired peekytoe crab cakes. I'm usually a three-slice maximum type of person, but I devoured the whole pie by myself. I love that it comes with a lemon slice for you to squeeze over the pizza. The cherrystone clam pieces, fresno chili, garlic, and parsley were pretty evenly distributed so each bite was extra flavorful. The crust is soft and chewy. The wood-fired peekytoe crab cakes tasted better than they looked. You get nice chunks of crab meat with minimal filler. They came with a Calabrian chili aioli that complemented the crab cakes well, and some radicchio and what I think is watercress on the side. Overall, a very filling, satisfying meal. read more

Our favorite was The Queen probably because we added extra cheese to that pie. All of them were delicious though. For dessert we had the basque cheesecake, chocolate budino and chocolate gelato. I finally got to go to Milk Flower! I had always heard about their pizza and seen the place from the outside but had never went in. It was so pretty inside with the dim lit light, it was a nice vibe for a date or girls' catch up sesh. We got Ricotta thing for the appetizer and more than anything, the fruits nuts bread was SO GOOD!!! We then got squid ink pasta, which was the highlight of the meal for me. I loved the flavor, how the crab was in every bite, aldente pasta, and nothing too salty!! The pizza was good! I loved the dough, I forgot how salty the anchovies were and it kinda made it almost spicy with how salty they were. I want to try a regular Queen next time. Amazing wood fired pizzas and will officially be added to my Astoria restaurant rotation! I came here on a Monday evening and there was no wait at all. Their pizzas are big enough to share with another person if you're not too hungry, but you can definitely get one for yourself. We got the Local 82 ($23) and it was absolutely delicious. The sauce tasted so fresh and I loved the bit of spice that came from the meat + jalapeños. It also wasn't too greasy and the crust had the perfect amount of chew. Service is so fast- I think we waited less than 10 mins for the pie to come out after we ordered. I can't wait to come back and try some of their other pizzas! Just note they don't take reservations so I recommend coming on a weekday or earlier for dinner since it can get busy quick! read more

My wife and I went into the place and asked for a table for 2 , there was maybe 4 other people in the place at the time. The waitress insisted on giving us a small table at the front of the entrance ; upon seeing multiple open tables towards the back of the space, we politely asked to be seated away from the front door. We were denied, I asked why we couldn't take a table in the back and was just told that the table in front was all they could offer ( it was 3pm on a Tuesday ) I could understand if the place was packed or if the place was a top rated destination that you needed reservations for but this was not the case and we will never patronize that establishment. It's been a few years since I've been to Milkflower and have always had a pleasant experience. This is no exception. We ordered the Van Dammer which is a pizza with brussel sprouts and a fried egg. It sounds bizarre but it works! Also got the ricotta with fig and artesinal bread and that was probably the highlight. The hint of thyme really ties it all together. The wood fired eggplant/zucchini was also good but I personally don't think it's worth the $. The decor remains unchanged from the last time we came which is nice. It's a very warm dining area with a hip vibe. Our experience was nearly 5 star. Only minor complaint was the waitress. She seemed a little distracted by other patron's dogs which is understandable. The meatballs were my favorite meal, it was so tasty and warm! I loved how it was presented with the skillet. The pasta was mediocre at best. Lacked pepper and flavor but it was okay. The pizza was so good too, I loved it. The service was super fast, got seated immediately and the server was very attentive. Had a weeknight dinner here because we were intrigued by the many pizza topping combinations and fun names. The space was pretty loud so it was hard to have a conversation, but some of the food made up for it. Hits: crab cake, meatballs, pizza, and budino. The crab cake had large chunks of crab (we love to see it!) and was paired with a fresh salad. The meatballs were tender and bathed in a lovely tomato sauce. The pizza crust was top-notch, with a nice chew and crisp bottom. It could've used a little acidity to offset the meat, chard, and mushrooms, but it was delicious regardless. The two of us shared the spicy soppressata and the st ghost pizza. The pizzas here are either red sauce or white (just cheese), so we wanted to try one of each. These both had honey so I was worried it was going to be too sweet, but not at all. These were also the thinnest pizzas I've ever had, even by NYC standards. I did appreciate that it was piping hot to our table, because the white pizza in particular congealed really quickly as it cooled down. The red one was tasty but it was very sloppy because the thin crust could hold up the sauce. The tiramisu was alright, the sponginess felt a little dry? I'm not sure what was off for me but my friend liked it enough to finish it. All in all, I thought the pizzas were fine but a bit overpriced. We were able to finish all the slices because they were so thin. I might still try the other pizzas before solidifying my thoughts about this place. read more

Milkflower is one of the best spots I've been to! I've visited twice--both times on holidays--and despite how busy it was, the service remained top-notch. The staff is incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere has a great, laid-back vibe. The food was 10/10. My personal favs were the S.T. Decent Italian spot that didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Pizza was pretty good, had a nice chewy consistency and texture, they are quite generous with toppings on the Local 82. That so was probably the highlight. Was excited for the squid ink pasta but found it quite bland, the texture was properly al dente though which was good. Broccoli rabe was a bit chewy and bitter, could have been seasoned better. Wines by the glass were incredibly small, about 100ml a pour. The glass was maybe 20% full. The waiter said the portions were personal pizzas but it's definitely shareable if you're not extremely hungry. The pizzas were good but I would have liked a little more spice and the crusts were just average. I was excited to try the burnt honey flavor of the s.t. the ghost but it wasn't very pronounced. I ended adding the spicy oil and chili flakes to my pizza slices for more flavor. I liked the rustic vibe of the restaurant and how you can see the pizzas being made from the view from your table. The pizzas arrived at a decent pace and service was fine. MIlkflower is a fancy pizzeria that is located in Astoria, the atmosphere is very nice a good place to bring a date maybe for a drink, not for the food, and the service is excellent but too bad that the food is very bad over here. I came on a weekday with a friend and was very disappointed with the taste of the food. We share the wood-roasted Octopus, russet potatoes, kalamata, and dill but without olives for my party. The octopus came with two pieces with were perfect to share a cross with me and my friend, but the texture was a bit gluey and the taste was not that good, for sure I had better in other places. For the pizza we share, The Spicy soppressata pizza that comes with tomato, mozzarella, basil, honey, and soppressata we also add extra sausage for 3 dollars more. Pretty blown away by their chewy pizza dough. It reminded me of some of my favorite Pizza joints in Dumbo, Brooklyn. We tried the clam and soppresatta and had the squid ink pasta with crab. The star was definitely the soppresatta pizza. They had a great selection of wine and beers and plenty of app, salad and pasta options too. Wow, my friend recommended this spot, so in I walked around 12:45 pm just now, and it's empty except for one lady. I was so hungry when I walked in, that I think I could have eaten two pizzas, but I didn't know what size they were. Plus, I only had one hour for lunch. The restaurant is rather hard to find. It's a third of the block on 31st Avenue between 34th and 35th Street. Find the neon signage "Wood Fired Pizza," then head on in. The inside is pretty nice and classy. Light pop playing like John Mayer. There is this hipster vibe, and you could tell by the exposed brick and the wooden interior. Ooh, the marble table tops are a great touch. The tables are really seated super close like you need to move sideways to get in between, so if you need space, it's not here, especially if you have shopping bags with gifts or are traveling with lots of luggage. Come here with less. My first thought was that it had a more upscale vibe. Upon entering to not find my plus one, there was a lady at the front who serves as the host and the waitress. Fortunately for me, she allowed me to enter, because I arrived earlier than my friend. My feelings about the meal itself. Well, I thought the beet salad was tasty. The beets were not mushy or overdone at all. I believe that they were perfect. I have yet to try the octopus and other salads on the menu. But I came here for the pizza. I have to say that it was good. It's not super big, think the size of Pizza Hut, personal pan. It had crispy, not soggy crust. I had the Chico Verde just covered with kale, and some of it was a bit burnt. Not loving it, not hating it. I tried my friend's pizza, the Queen, and it was tasty, yet it could have had more basil.
