Fam and I wanted to try a new boba spot that had food so we decided to check out Milk Tea Lab! It was a Saturday evening and the place was completely dead for the hour that we were there (although, there were a few DoorDash/Grubhub orders from the looks of it!). I ordered the most basic drink - a taro smoothie with boba, and the boba was perfect! Not too chewy, had a good bite, the drink itself was a little too sweet for my liking - I'd probably go down on sweetness to 75%. We also shared the popcorn chicken (not spicy whatsoever but nicely seasoned), fried calamari (a little overcooked as it was rubbery but the flavor was spot on), and onion rings. It should be noted that they're in the process of closing. Despite mostly positive reviews, I arrived and they are running low on a lot of products (with no plans to restock). They were only able to provide size small drinks and they were out of matcha. My husband and I both got slush drinks with pudding. They were okay, but weren't the best that I had had. I used to order a lot from their location back in the bay area so I was glad to hear they had a location here too! I normally order through doordash and pickup but I have gone in person to order a few times. The service is great and the boba is usually good too. My go-to drink is the Strawberry Milk Tea with Red Heart Jelly Strawberry! It's my favorite thing and I pair it with the popcorn chicken. It's located in Mesa College Center across the street from Kearney High School. Large space inside but very few tables. 4 big tv's on the wall. Great place for students to study and charge their laptops with the many electrical outlets along the bench. They offer small, regular, giant or hot for sizes. Then no spice to extra spicy for food. We got: -Almond milk tea - very good, strong bold tea base flavor. Got regular sweet, it was too sweet. -Honey roasted milk tea - tasted like regular milk tea, also really good. Got 50% sweet and it was perfect. -Takoyaki - great size but too glutinous starchy and needed more octopus -Popcorn chicken - love that there are many spice levels. We got medium. Been here twice - love the variety of flavors to choose from. Orange dreamsicle is on point. The mango smoothie flavor is good but i thought the mango texture was slightly off. I was so excited to try this place since it's just a few blocks from home. I got the Taro Milk Tea with Honey Boba. Although I didn't note anything unique about their version of the Taro MT, it was still pretty good. Even with regular sugar, the sweetness of the drink was just right. You have so many different drinks to choose from at this place. Not only do they have milk teas, flavored teas, and smoothies; they also have tonic drinks--which I'm already planning to try the next time I visit! I also loved that they offer milk substitutes here--they have oat, soy, and almond milks. If you're craving for something to eat while you sip on your drink, they also have some snacks on their menu--they even have vegan options! We were desperate for Boba on that cold windy morning.... Sounds insane but please bear with us. We are boba cray people. We found Milk Tea Lab and I adored their cute menu and setup. I got a Starwars for myself and it was delicious! It had yellow stars in it and it was a mango fruit tea. I got it with 25% and it felt quite sweet! I would not go for full sweet for this for sure! The boy got the standard taro milk tea with light ice and 25% sugar. A good taro tea is our test for a good boba place and they passed it! Taro tea was creamy, milky and hit the spot. Wanted to try a different boba shop and stumbled upon milk tea lab! I came around 8pm and it was quite empty, and there were plenty of parking available. There's a self kiosk as well, but the staff were nice and helped with my questions! The store has tons of space, it was bigger than I expected. The ambiance was nice and cutely decorated! They have a wide selection on their menu, with lots of food options as well. I decided to try the tiger milk tea and I thought it was decent! There aren't sugar adjustments on the self kiosk, so I let the staff know and I wrote it in the notes. As for the drink, the tea flavor itself isn't strong, and it just tasted like sweet milk. The brown sugar tasted more like honey, but overall I thought it was good but on the sweeter side. Since the store is so big, I'd recommend coming here to hang out with friends! Craving boba and decided to try this place because we saw they offer oat milk. We ordered Passion fruit green tea & Jasmine milk tea with oat milk. I was told they use the powdered non dairy creamer (which I hate) and they said they wouldn't be able to make it with oat milk but then they said they could. My jasmine oat milk tea wasn't that milky but I understand why. They have the jasmine tea already brewed and add a certain amount of powdered creamer to it to make it milky whereas adding too much oat milk would dilute the jasmine tea because they're adding liquid to liquid. If they made their jasmine green tea more concentrated then added oat milk it wouldn't be an issue but I get it, using the powdered non dairy creamer gives a bigger profit margin and it has more shelf stability. But the thing I hate about the powdered non dairy creamers and why I never order drinks with them is the ingredients. The lack of milkiness didn't really bother me because I was happy to have oat milk. The tea however was kind of bitter but what was so disappointing was the boba. It wasn't warm and it tasted like it had been made over 4 hours ago. It didn't seem fresh. It wasn't soft, had a firmer centre and it was a chore to chew. I regretted ordering boba x2 for my giant sized drink. We both sat there trying our drinks mentioning how bad the boba was. And my husband ordered his passionfruit green tea with 0% sugar but it was still very sweet and there were no passionfruit seeds in it which led us to believe that they're probably using that pre-prepared thick passion fruit flavoured syrup-like stuff and just spooned in a certain amount to get the passion fruit flavor but obviously the sugar that's already in the syrup can't be removed. I saw someone's review saying that they ate the best calamari here and when I asked a worker if they made it in-house, she just straight up said "nope, we buy it". During golden hour, the inner corners of their store get really dark so I hope that they add some more lighting to keep the mood alive. Cupid Tonic: 4.5/5 I am a sucker for soda, even though I know that it's the worst deal. The Cupid Tonic is a lychee flavored soda with blueberry heart-shaped jelly. The lychee flavor is sweet but very light. If you quizzed me about which flavor I was drinking, it would be hard for me to tell you it was lychee, but it was surprisingly good. The jelly is very similar to nata de coco and had an ambiguous sort of fruity flavor. Overall, it was super tasty and I told myself it was worth because it would be too much work to make at home. If you are a soda connoisseur like me, this is a great option! Takoyaki: 4/5 Are these from a bag that I could probably buy at Mitsuwa? Did they use regular American mayo instead of Kewpie? For a place called Milk Tea Lab, I was hoping for more unique tea combinations or the options to concoct your own boba mixes. Unfortunately it's not a build your own boba place. They have a standard menu with hot snacks (I would have loved to try this but we were still too full from dinner) and some more interesting things like their "tonic" drinks (mixed soda drinks). I guess there are 3 ways to order, scanning the QR code, using the touch screen, or just in person. We used the touch screen, pretty easy. We got the: 1) Milkcow: -It's just sweet milk with grass jelly. -Can't really go wrong with something really basic 2) Roasted Milk Tea with Pudding, 75% sweet: -Not bad, egg pudding was sweet and not too "jelly-like" like some cheaper places. -Standard drink Really hoping they get more business, pretty empty for a Saturday night when it should be filled with people hanging out. Found this new milk tea shop in the area so I wanted to check it out. It's in a smaller complex but parking was easy when I went. I couldn't figure out if there are ice levels or sugar levels but at one point the staff asked if I wanted to modify the sugar, and when I asked to do half and half it didn't seem clear if that could be done. Fun aesthetic and concept for a boba spot but their drinks and food are underwhelming. Tucked in a corner behind K Sandwiches is this science themed location. They offer fun combinations that can't be found elsewhere such as Spongebob, Orange Dreamsicle, and Alien Tonic along with cute heart shaped toppings. They also have a "giant" size but I think large is the best size still. Spongebob (2/5): A pineapple focused slush that lacks significant flavor despite being at 100% sweetness. Definitely would avoid getting boba as a topping. It's like drinking ice while someone whispered "pineapple" into your ear. Honey Roasted Milk Tea (4/5): Their best seller and the definitely the superior option. I got it at 30% and the sugar level was pleasant. The grass jelly complemented the tea well and didn't detract from the subtle honey flavor. Popcorn Chicken (2.5/5): Average chicken snack--nothing too special. The portion is misleading because there is a wrapper at the bottom so compared to other popcorn chicken, this was subpar. I would get the higher spice levels if you want a kick. Comes with sweet and sour packets that don't add much. Most notably, their boba is incredibly lackluster. Way too chewy and bland and I would honestly rank their boba as one of the worst in SD. This Bay Area boba tea chain has set up its first outpost in San Diego near K Sandwiches off Linda Vista Rd. It occupies a corner suite in the same strip mall as Homestyle Hawaiian. There's not much traffic in this plaza so parking was pretty easy. The inside of the shop was bright and spacious. All of the chairs and tables had been set aside so customers can't be on-site to eat/drink. During their soft opening period through March 8th, you can get a large drink for $1 if you buy any snack item at a regular price. The food varieties were broken into meat, seafood, and vegan with at least four choices in each category. Flavored teas, milk teas, laboratory tonics, smoothies/slushies, and a few specials made up the drink types. I wanted to get the takoyaki, but with my luck, the octopus fritters were the only snack that was sold out on the evening of my visit. I bought the potstickers instead which came as seven pieces and a packet of sweet and sour sauce for $5.50. The quality and crispiness of the fried dumplings were okay. For my drink, I chose the Mango Lover which had fresh fruit bits and a creamy froth. The sweetness was significant so I probably should have asked for an adjustment beforehand. read more

To make sure it wasn't a 'one hit wonder' I visit another time and order different items. Drinks were amazing, not too sweet but if you wish for something more sweet you can request for extra sugar. Multiple choices of toppings. Food is amazing, spice level is great for those who enjoy spicy food, if you don't like spicy I recommend getting "no spice" to play it on the safe side.
