What makes Scratch's French toast so good is that they don't use plain old white bread for it. Instead, they use sweet bread pudding, which makes for an utterly decadent and delicious breakfast. The pieces of bread pudding had crisp edges while being soft on the inside. They were topped with sliced bananas and a rich bourbon caramel sauce, and served with maple syrup infused whipped cream that was almost practically ice cream. The French toast also comes with your choice of sausage or pork belly. I opted for the sausage patties, which were tasty and homemade. I also ordered the orange juice ($4.50) and home fries ($3.75). The home fries were delicious. Crispy potato chunks that were the right amount of salty. Between the French toast and home fries, I left stuffed. Service was also great. My server was very friendly and welcoming, and came to check on me a couple of times. Notes - it's a small place with a couple of tables, but I was able to take a seat right away on a Friday morning. Every table comes with 2 bottles of hot sauce - a red sauce and green sauce. You pay at the cash register after you get your check.

It was the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and just a little kick. My friend stuck with her usual: the Banana & Bourbon Caramel Bread Pudding French Toast, topped with fresh bananas and their homemade bourbon caramel sauce, plus a side of pork belly. It looked incredible and, according to her, tasted just as good as it always does. We arrived just a few minutes after they opened at 8:00 and were seated right away. The service was friendly, attentive, and very prompt without feeling rushed. Scratch has such a great casual, local diner feel, but with a menu that's anything but ordinary. The portions are generous, the flavors are unique, and the quality is consistently excellent. Definitely a go-to spot for breakfast or brunch...you really can't go wrong here.

The Catfish and Grits came out looking and smelling great. The catfish is smaller nuggets heaped on top of a generous portion of creamy grits with a great sauce, cheese and fresh jalapeno slices. The dish was delicious, perfectly spiced with just the right amount of heat. The jalapeno slices provided spiciness and a welcome crunch to the dish. I was so happy that I not only got to try the dish, but even better is having a second helping for the next day. Service was attentive and friendly, the chef/owner came out of the kitchen to check on the few guests in the dining room, always welcome to see a guy who cares about his restaurant and is proud of the food he is putting out. I would suggest giving Hatfield's Goode Grub a try, if the rest of the menu lives up to the Catfish and Grits it is one of the better local casual restaurants. Well worth your time.
