Ryan is some sort of wizard with such a deep understanding of the body and movement. He helped me solve recurring pain I had in my back from a two year old jiu jitsu injury after my regular physical therapy was ineffective. After just one session here I immediately felt improvement. The drastic change in comfort with my bjj rolling sessions was crazy. With a few more sessions he helped me with some other minor issues I was having with my hips/knees and posture, and every session I left feeling excited about my progress. Well worth it! Incredible how much potential for bodily improvement there is in the details. Thanks Ryan!! read more

A trainer at my gym noted that my lats were very tight, which was inhibiting some lat-involved movements, like front rack barbell movements. I signed up for a sports massage with Niels Pedersen, and after one lat-torturing (in the best way) session, I noticed that I had gained several inches on my strict toes-to-bar, another lat-heavy movement that I had been trying and failing to unlock for the last two years (but was not on my radar in relation to the massage therapy). I signed up for a second session with Niels, and the week after, to my astonishment (and to that of my cheering gym peers who witnessed my prior struggles), I suddenly can do strict toes-to-bar! Huge thank you to Niels and the magic/slight torture he bestowed. read more

Briefly, Ryan helped me regain near-normal knee flexion/extension by week 3 after a total knee replacement. He is amazing!!! Over the last few years, the limitations of osteoarthritis and other chronic degenerative conditions forced me to be more sedentary. I had multiple surgeries, including two bunionectomies, a spinal fusion and laminectomy, and, most recently, a total knee replacement. I started going to Milestones Movement Therapy because my daughter wanted to take a more holistic approach to my health, with Class IV laser treatments to promote healing and decrease pain as I recovered from my knee surgery and functional movement therapy to help me avoid future injuries. Working with Ryan gave me the opportunity to thrive; continue enjoying activities like hiking, paddle boarding, white water rafting, kayaking, and hula dancing; and maintain an active lifestyle as I approach my 80s. I am so thankful that he has been part of my recovery team! I think if I started seeing Ryan much sooner, I could have avoided the damage that caused me to need my previous surgeries. My first appointment was for laser treatment with Miles on post-op day 2. Before the session, my knee and lower leg were swollen like one giant, overfilled balloon, and performing my physical therapy exercises was so uncomfortable that I could barely get my knee to flex at 90°, even with strong pain medication. I was amazed by how much my pain decreased and my range of motion increased after that first visit! I started movement therapy with Ryan on my second visit (post-op day 4). He performed cupping, laser, and massage treatments to improve the circulation in my leg and around my knee, and I walked out of the office again with markedly decreased pain and stiffness. Over the next 16 days in which I had bi-weekly visits with Ryan, I felt stronger (less pained and more stable), stopped needing pain medication altogether, and was ultimately released early from in-home physical therapy when my flexion and extension measured at 130° and -4°, respectively. My outpatient physical therapist said "normal" flexion is 130° and extension is 0°, and he and my surgeon mentioned how surprised they were by the rate and extent of my progress. It is post-op day 30 now, and Ryan and I have started addressing some of my chronic postural/pedal concerns. I can walk without a cane, ride a recumbent bike, and navigate stairs. I am working on strengthening my muscles, improving the mobility of different joints, and trusting my new knee to support different loads. Ryan is a true professional. Every time I see him, he asks whether I have questions/concerns, actively and openly listens, and addresses things in a way that makes me feel very comfortable under his care, even while he pushes against the boundaries of what I think is possible. Ryan is extremely thorough when explaining different modalities and their benefits and knowledgeable about rehabbing the human body, so my family and I trust his judgment. When my extension plateaued at -10°, for example, and other health professionals were telling me to just focus on contracting certain muscles to get my leg to straighten, Ryan's insight into the rotational aspect of knee flexion/extension and knee mobilization treatments got me to -4°. Ryan is also patient, constantly showing my daughter different treatments and exercises to try with me at home; and funny, engaging, and motivating, always keeping my spirits high while we work through painful or physically/neurologically taxing issues. My daughter and I are very pleased with Ryan's quality of care and feel so fortunate to benefit from his expertise that we've told all of our friends and relatives about my recovery journey with him. Several of our friends have started or will soon start working with him. He and the rest of the team at Milestones Movement Therapy are amazing at collaborating to ensure you have the best opportunities for improvement. Working with them is definitely worth the investment! read more

I worked with Miles for almost a year and he gave me my life back after years of chronic pain resulted in a severe back injury. Miles' approach is holistic and he is incredibly skilled at meeting you where you are, not just in your overall health and fitness, but however you are feeling or whatever you are experiencing in your body each day that you come in. Miles was so patient and encouraging with me, and never made me feel bad about my limitations (physical or mental). He helped coach me through a mental fear block I'd built up over years of constant pain, and helped me regain trust in my body by showing me what I was capable of when I would have been too afraid to try certain movements or exercises on my own, all while never pushing me too much. Miles' training in bodywork and other interventions was essential and contributed to such a holistic, wraparound approach focused on true healing, not just isolated gains in strength, mobility, and flexibility. Before seeing Miles, I had spent years and so much money trying other interventions, but this was the approach I needed and I'll always be grateful for Miles and how he helped give me my life back. read more

Milestones Movement Therapy has absolutely changed my life! I started a fitness journey as I was preparing for my 40th birthday. I wanted to learn how to lift barbells after never lifting weights a day in my life. I started seeing Carolina at Milestones and she has been amazing! She has taught me so much about proper form and fitness and has me lifting barbells and heavy weights in a way I never could have imagined. The facility is clean and inviting, the staff is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. I cannot recommend Milestones Movement Therapy enough! read more

In going through a pregnancy and childbirth four years ago, my body never fully recovered. I experienced knee and hip pain, as well as plantar fasciitis, whenever I attempted to jog on a regular basis. I avoided high impact exercises, like jumping jacks, believing my body was no longer up to the task. I began seeing Carolina at Milestones Movement Therapy in Spring 2023. Carolina is a phenomenal personal trainer, specializing in rehabilitation. At our first session, she analyzed how my body was currently performing certain tasks and observed that I was putting unnecessary pressure on my knees because I was underusing other muscles. She gave me a set up glute strengthening exercises, as well as plantar exercises to help strengthen my feet. Carolina also analyzed my running form and worked with me on improving my form to avoid injury. After several months of doing the exercises that Carolina gave to me, I am no longer experiencing knee pain! My feet also feel stronger than they ever have before. Several weeks ago, I tried jumping jacks after about six years of avoiding them - no pain! Milestones Movement Therapy is a wonderful resource. I highly encourage anybody who reads this review to book a training session there. Everybody who I have met there is lovely, and I really love their mission, which is to maximize the body's potential. Working with Carolina has been life changing, as I feel like I understand my body better and will be able to maintain my physical fitness as I grow older. read more

I was very impressed by Miles and would highly recommend him. He's very patient and knowledgeable. After tweaking my back, I went in to Milestones for massages to work it out. Unfortunately, the massages, which typically work, did not fix the issue, so I met with Miles, a functional movement trainer, who helped me understand the root cause of my pain and gave me daily stretching exercises. Because remembering each of the exercises can be a challenge, he also sent an e-mail with video instructions of each exercise. Super Helpful! To my relief, the exercises began to straighten my back out within 2 days, and within 1 week, I was back in alignment. Within a month, I had gained most of my strength back, and after 10 visits (~2 months), I was back to normal, with the list of stretches, should I need to work on them on my own. I will certainly return, if I'm ever in another situation like this. - Russ read more

I am very grateful for Milestones Movement's services and expertise. I came to them with knee pain for a year and they were able to find the source of the pain. They taught me how to resolve and prevent the pain in the future. Ryan and Neiles were wonderful with mobility and massage to resolve my pain. read more

I chose to go to Milestones Movement Therapy after years of frustrating physical therapy sessions prescribed by my doctor. At Milestones we worked on all of me - not just the complaining joint of the week. I started with the goal of getting back to being able to do regular exercise and with a combination of personalized exercises and a wide range of therapies, I reached that goal. I'm really grateful to Milestones Movement Therapy for helping me overcome a number of physical challenges. read more

What an amazing team here a Milestones! In a relatively short period of time I have started my journey to get back to feeling and looking like myself. I have some restrictions in my mobility and can not do the same type of workouts I once did and loved. I am also out of shape in a major way! I have no doubt I will get back in shape if I do the work here! I have had the pleasure of working with both Miles and Zoe. Both are extremely good at what they do and they are constant professionals. They truly know what they are doing. As a result my mobility has improved and I am getting stronger every day. Milestones is much more than just a gym or a place to work out. It is a true community! A true hidden gem in Davis. I wish I had found them years ago. I heard one may even open in the Bay Area soon. If you are serious about your health and fitness and have a sports injury or limitations, come here! You will not be disappointed! read more

I came to Milestones after hurting my back while gardening. The pain was so bad I had to stop running, cycling and I couldn't even ride in the car for very long. Miles analyzed how I move and created a series of stretches specifically for me, which help strengthen my back muscles. The results have been amazing. I can run, bike, and hike again. Also, when I do feel pain, I know what exercises to do to get back to being pain-free. read more

I called and spoke to Mike and Will about how I threw out my back. I was able to catch an appointment with Will--I walked in waddling like a duck and Will helped me out in a 1 hour appointment! I got tremendous relief and I'm so grateful for the service all around. This is not a massage experience if you're just trying to "Enya-and-candles relax" (also nothing hurt about the help). This was a visit with a specific wellness goal and carried out in a more athletic context. Highly recommend! read more

I went in to see Miles after a neck injury and was very impressed with the results. He was able to get my pain under control and work with me on strengthening so that I'm stronger and less injury prone than before. He was very compliant with COVID guidelines and was great to work with. What he provides is a perfect combination of massage, rehabilitation, and training to keep you at your best. I highly recommend Milestones Movement! read more

My son just received a free sports massage from Milestones after running the Rock to Brew Fest 5K. He ran hard. He said the massage was as good as the medals he received. Me: "Was the massage good?" Him: "Oh yeah, he got me good. That was so good." If I lived in the area, I'd be making use of this shop. I'm jealous right now. read more

After trying virtually everything (except surgery), Miles' shockwave and laser therapy provided me with incredible relief and healing. When I first went to see Miles, I couldn't walk, stand, nor sleep due to chronic tendonitis. After 6 weeks of 2 treatments per week I can now do all those things - and without pain. Thank you Miles! Miles gave me my sanity back, truly I cannot express my gratitude for his professionalism and expertise. I strained my calf a month ago and proceeded to reinjure it two more times. I thought I was doing what I needed to, but had never experienced an injury like this. I had no clear direction or understanding of how to not only heal it but safely strengthen it to prevent reinjury and allow me to get back to my active lifestyle. As a mother of 2 little ones not being able to run or even move quickly was so frustrating. I reached out to Miles and we set up a message session and consultation. I was incredibly appreciative of how safety precautions were handled at Miles' studio during this time and I felt safe throughout the course of the treatment. He took the time to understand my injury, from start to finish he asked that I explain the last month and describe the injury and events that led to reinjuries. Then the massage portion started and I cannot tell you how incredible that process was. His experience, confidence, and knowledge of sports massage was undeniable. He was slow and methodical and really focused on finding the area of injury and working on it. He also used a red light treatment on the area and when all was said and done finished with kinesiology taping for support. Then he sat me down and went step by step through his recommendations for my at-home care and physical therapy/exercise rehab. He emailed me with a detailed plan and I feel like I finally have the tools and knowledge to fully heal this injury and get my life back. I cannot overstate how much he helped me, not just physically, but mentally. I needed someone who knew what they were doing, who understood my injury, and could clearly and confidently present a path forward for me, and Miles did just that. read more

Stopped into Milestones Movement a few weeks ago when I was back in California to see family. I've been dealing with tight hamstrings, lower back, and hips for years due to a lifestyle that involves working in an office and then going straight to the soccer field almost every day. While I was only able to get a few sessions with Miles, the exercises that he gave me have Lready made a huge difference in how I feel. Wish I lived closer, I'd be a regular. read more

Miles really helped me out and did what I think many PTs and doctors were not able to do. Since he is not a PT, we were able to meet more consistently (without fear of insurance coverage running out) and worked on a combination of strengthening exercises and tissue massage. The exercises were definitely doable. On top of that, he is great person and easy to chat with. He did a great job helping me through my plantar fasciitis and all around pointing out areas of imbalance that have really helped with my day to day. Milestones has a great business model and potential! I've progressed from hobbling around day to day to adding back in regular physical activities. I still have "flare ups" but they have been much more manageable. I think time is a big part of recovery but I was very thankful for the skill set I learned. read more

I booked a massage at Milestones Movement for a family member who had persistent back pain. After their appointment yesterday they said the pain was almost fully gone and had very positive feedback for their therapist Miles. The quality of the massage was excellent and Miles' strong understanding of human anatomy/physiology contributed to the quality of care. He also sent my family member home with some stretches to work on daily. I'm very happy to have found Milestones Movement and would recommend it to anyone needing personal training/massage/movement therapy. read more

Milestone Movement: My trainer, Miles, is as knowledgeable as they come. I was referred by a friend to come here and she said it cured her chronic back and shoulder pain. Miles corrected her movement through biomechanics retraining. I could not recommend Miles and Milestone Movement more. I always hear how people limit themselves to "I cant's". I was just the same, I can't squat past 90 degrees, I can't move my shoulder this way etc. etc. the list is longer than the Book of Solomon. With Milestone Movement I stripped my body of all preconceived and improper motions. Through Miles, I rebuilt my biomechanics from the ground up. The difference has been pineapples to pears, absolutely and entirely different. I move freely and lead a healthier lifestyle. I have lost 15 lbs through his program and feel physically rejuvenated. Thank you Miles read more

Cannot say enough about Zoe & the team at Milestones Movement!!! I basically spent the pandemic on the couch and let myself get pretty out of shape. Once my gym opened back up in February, I wanted a program that I could follow that would give me a plan for my workouts. I reached out to Miles and he put me in touch with Zoe. Zoe spent time to get to know me and my background, and to understand what my goals were. We talked about limitations and injuries I'd had (shoulder surgery & lower back problems), and in particular any movements to avoid that caused pain. I told her I basically wanted to start from square one, and she sent me my first 2 weeks of workouts. The workouts have been GREAT (she kicks my butt, but they're great). Every day when I go to the gym, I have a set plan of what I need to do - which is exactly what I wanted. For any new movements she introduces, she includes links to YouTube so I can see how they're done correctly. It holds me accountable, and definitely gives me a sense of accomplishment when I finish each week. Zoe calls/texts me regularly to check in, and modifies the workouts based on my feedback. After 4 months, I feel 1000x better than when I started, and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Cannot recommend Zoe & Milestones more! read more

I seriously screwed up my back deadlifting a year ago and was having issues simply walking straight. Imagine at 26, experiencing excruciating back pain trying to bend over to tie your shoes------ pretty bad. After 2 1/2 years of struggling with chronic pain and trying PT, acupuncture, cortisone injections, massage, trigger point therapy and cryotherapy, Miles is the one who helped me make effective changes and gain my life back. I've been going to Miles 1-2x per week for the past few years. I do a lot of distance sports (mostly triathlons) and his strength and conditioning work has been a great complement to my training. Well, full disclosure, I work at Milestones so I'm very biased. but I choose to teach there because of Miles and his mission. He has created a complete gym that offers evidenced-based trainers and services that bridge the gap between acute rehabilitation and full physical fitness. It is difficult to find another place that does this. Massage offers a necessary service but once your muscles are relaxed, you're ready for corrective exercises to complete the treatment and return back to sport. Milestones offers all of this under the same roof so trainers and therapists can communicate with each other about clients and return them to fitness safely. I'm also a client and what I like about Miles is that he educates you during the massage session so you understand your body better. I highly recommend Miles as a massage therapist and I recommend Milestones for all your fitness and injury recovery needs. read more

Been dealing with back pain for a while now and have been looking for a fix. I've only been to a couple sessions so far; It hasn't fixed all my problems, but I can definitely see improvement. The cool part about it is that we are working to change how I move, which apparently is the root cause of my back pain. It's not another massage or quick fix we are working to prevent me from needing weekly massages in the future because it doesn't hurt in the first place! Highly recommend read more

I was referred here by a friend after constantly complaining of back pain and I honestly have to say I feel in control of my life again. Back pain has hindered my day to day routine for years but after a movement screen and consultation from the owner miles, he put into perspective what I needed to do in order to help myself. After one month of weekly sessions here I have been able to return to work without pain and feel I have to tools moving forward to live a pain free life. Anyone seeking help with functional pain they experience I highly recommend coming here. Miles was sympathetic and very educational while working with me and showed true genuine care in a profession that can sometimes leave you feeling neglected. read more

I started working with Miles from Milestones Movement several months ago. I was suffering from debilitating back pain that would limit my ability to work (even a desk job). As a 25 year old, I decided enough was enough and sought help! After seeing several doctors who told me my pain may never go away, I ran across Milestones Movement and am so grateful I did! Miles was the first person to look at my movement as a whole to determine what may be the ROOT CAUSE of my issues not just my symptoms. He took the time to explain to me how severe mobility restrictions altered the way I was moving and were likely contributing to my symptoms. The answer wasn't in a surgery or a pill, the answer was right there, my movement! After stopping playing competitive soccer my activity levels diminished, school and work included lots of sitting and when i went to the gym I would only do heavy lifting. As a result of these and increased life stresses I lost functional mobility and movement competence. Tight hamstrings were pulling my pelvis into a posterior tilt which was altering my spinal alignment, core musculature was not stabilizing my pelvis and spine, add heavy deadlifts to the equation and I had my recipe for disaster. Miles has helped my change my mobility status and re-train my movement patterns and just like that my pain has gone away! Trust me people, if you have not found relief elsewhere, the answer is likely in your movement. Go see Miles, get your movement screened, and see what he can do for you. You won't be disappointed! read more
