A trainer at my gym noted that my lats were very tight, which was inhibiting some lat-involved movements, like front rack barbell movements. I signed up for a sports massage with Niels Pedersen, and after one lat-torturing (in the best way) session, I noticed that I had gained several inches on my strict toes-to-bar, another lat-heavy movement that I had been trying and failing to unlock for the last two years (but was not on my radar in relation to the massage therapy). Briefly, Ryan helped me regain near-normal knee flexion/extension by week 3 after a total knee replacement. He is amazing!!! Over the last few years, the limitations of osteoarthritis and other chronic degenerative conditions forced me to be more sedentary. I had multiple surgeries, including two bunionectomies, a spinal fusion and laminectomy, and, most recently, a total knee replacement. I started going to Milestones Movement Therapy because my daughter wanted to take a more holistic approach to my health, with Class IV laser treatments to promote healing and decrease pain as I recovered from my knee surgery and functional movement therapy to help me avoid future injuries. Working with Ryan gave me the opportunity to thrive; continue enjoying activities like hiking, paddle boarding, white water rafting, kayaking, and hula dancing; and maintain an active lifestyle as I approach my 80s. I am so thankful that he has been part of my recovery team! I think if I started seeing Ryan much sooner, I could have avoided the damage that caused me to need my previous surgeries. My first appointment was for laser treatment with Miles on post-op day 2. Before the session, my knee and lower leg were swollen like one giant, overfilled balloon, and performing my physical therapy exercises was so uncomfortable that I could barely get my knee to flex at 90°, even with strong pain medication. I was amazed by how much my pain decreased and my range of motion increased after that first visit! I started movement therapy with Ryan on my second visit (post-op day 4). He performed cupping, laser, and massage treatments to improve the circulation in my leg and around my knee, and I walked out of the office again with markedly decreased pain and stiffness. Over the next 16 days in which I had bi-weekly visits with Ryan, I felt stronger (less pained and more stable), stopped needing pain medication altogether, and was ultimately released early from in-home physical therapy when my flexion and extension measured at 130° and -4°, respectively. My outpatient physical therapist said "normal" flexion is 130° and extension is 0°, and he and my surgeon mentioned how surprised they were by the rate and extent of my progress. It is post-op day 30 now, and Ryan and I have started addressing some of my chronic postural/pedal concerns. I can walk without a cane, ride a recumbent bike, and navigate stairs. I am working on strengthening my muscles, improving the mobility of different joints, and trusting my new knee to support different loads. Ryan is a true professional. Every time I see him, he asks whether I have questions/concerns, actively and openly listens, and addresses things in a way that makes me feel very comfortable under his care, even while he pushes against the boundaries of what I think is possible. Ryan is extremely thorough when explaining different modalities and their benefits and knowledgeable about rehabbing the human body, so my family and I trust his judgment. When my extension plateaued at -10°, for example, and other health professionals were telling me to just focus on contracting certain muscles to get my leg to straighten, Ryan's insight into the rotational aspect of knee flexion/extension and knee mobilization treatments got me to -4°. Ryan is also patient, constantly showing my daughter different treatments and exercises to try with me at home; and funny, engaging, and motivating, always keeping my spirits high while we work through painful or physically/neurologically taxing issues. My daughter and I are very pleased with Ryan's quality of care and feel so fortunate to benefit from his expertise that we've told all of our friends and relatives about my recovery journey with him. Several of our friends have started or will soon start working with him. He and the rest of the team at Milestones Movement Therapy are amazing at collaborating to ensure you have the best opportunities for improvement. I worked with Miles for almost a year and he gave me my life back after years of chronic pain resulted in a severe back injury. In going through a pregnancy and childbirth four years ago, my body never fully recovered. I experienced knee and hip pain, as well as plantar fasciitis, whenever I attempted to jog on a regular basis. I avoided high impact exercises, like jumping jacks, believing my body was no longer up to the task. I began seeing Carolina at Milestones Movement Therapy in Spring 2023. Carolina is a phenomenal personal trainer, specializing in rehabilitation. At our first session, she analyzed how my body was currently performing certain tasks and observed that I was putting unnecessary pressure on my knees because I was underusing other muscles. She gave me a set up glute strengthening exercises, as well as plantar exercises to help strengthen my feet. Carolina also analyzed my running form and worked with me on improving my form to avoid injury. After several months of doing the exercises that Carolina gave to me, I am no longer experiencing knee pain! My feet also feel stronger than they ever have before. Several weeks ago, I tried jumping jacks after about six years of avoiding them - no pain! Milestones Movement Therapy is a wonderful resource. I was very impressed by Miles and would highly recommend him. He's very patient and knowledgeable. After tweaking my back, I went in to Milestones for massages to work it out. Unfortunately, the massages, which typically work, did not fix the issue, so I met with Miles, a functional movement trainer, who helped me understand the root cause of my pain and gave me daily stretching exercises. Because remembering each of the exercises can be a challenge, he also sent an e-mail with video instructions of each exercise. Super Helpful! To my relief, the exercises began to straighten my back out within 2 days, and within 1 week, I was back in alignment. Miles really helped me out and did what I think many PTs and doctors were not able to do. Since he is not a PT, we were able to meet more consistently (without fear of insurance coverage running out) and worked on a combination of strengthening exercises and tissue massage. The exercises were definitely doable. On top of that, he is great person and easy to chat with. He did a great job helping me through my plantar fasciitis and all around pointing out areas of imbalance that have really helped with my day to day. Miles gave me my sanity back, truly I cannot express my gratitude for his professionalism and expertise. I strained my calf a month ago and proceeded to reinjure it two more times. I thought I was doing what I needed to, but had never experienced an injury like this. I had no clear direction or understanding of how to not only heal it but safely strengthen it to prevent reinjury and allow me to get back to my active lifestyle. As a mother of 2 little ones not being able to run or even move quickly was so frustrating. I reached out to Miles and we set up a message session and consultation. He took the time to understand my injury, from start to finish he asked that I explain the last month and describe the injury and events that led to reinjuries. Cannot say enough about Zoe & the team at Milestones Movement!!! I basically spent the pandemic on the couch and let myself get pretty out of shape. Once my gym opened back up in February, I wanted a program that I could follow that would give me a plan for my workouts. I reached out to Miles and he put me in touch with Zoe. Zoe spent time to get to know me and my background, and to understand what my goals were. We talked about limitations and injuries I'd had (shoulder surgery & lower back problems), and in particular any movements to avoid that caused pain. I told her I basically wanted to start from square one, and she sent me my first 2 weeks of workouts. The workouts have been GREAT (she kicks my butt, but they're great). Every day when I go to the gym, I have a set plan of what I need to do - which is exactly what I wanted. For any new movements she introduces, she includes links to YouTube so I can see how they're done correctly. It holds me accountable, and definitely gives me a sense of accomplishment when I finish each week. Zoe calls/texts me regularly to check in, and modifies the workouts based on my feedback. Well, full disclosure, I work at Milestones so I'm very biased. but I choose to teach there because of Miles and his mission. He has created a complete gym that offers evidenced-based trainers and services that bridge the gap between acute rehabilitation and full physical fitness. It is difficult to find another place that does this. Massage offers a necessary service but once your muscles are relaxed, you're ready for corrective exercises to complete the treatment and return back to sport. Been dealing with back pain for a while now and have been looking for a fix. I've only been to a couple sessions so far; It hasn't fixed all my problems, but I can definitely see improvement. I started working with Miles from Milestones Movement several months ago. I was suffering from debilitating back pain that would limit my ability to work (even a desk job). As a 25 year old, I decided enough was enough and sought help! After seeing several doctors who told me my pain may never go away, I ran across Milestones Movement and am so grateful I did! Miles was the first person to look at my movement as a whole to determine what may be the ROOT CAUSE of my issues not just my symptoms. He took the time to explain to me how severe mobility restrictions altered the way I was moving and were likely contributing to my symptoms. The answer wasn't in a surgery or a pill, the answer was right there, my movement! After stopping playing competitive soccer my activity levels diminished, school and work included lots of sitting and when i went to the gym I would only do heavy lifting. As a result of these and increased life stresses I lost functional mobility and movement competence. Tight hamstrings were pulling my pelvis into a posterior tilt which was altering my spinal alignment, core musculature was not stabilizing my pelvis and spine, add heavy deadlifts to the equation and I had my recipe for disaster.
