I am very surprised that I enjoy Willy's Pizza because they do everything that I normally don't like: thick crust, too much cheese, and the most sacrilegious thing of all, toppings under the cheese!! However, for inscrutable reasons, I like the pizza at Willy's, lol. I was super hungry and learned that I would be unexpectedly having dinner by myself that evening. I was in the area, and wanted something quick to take home, so decided to try Willy's Pizza, which I had never tried before. I walked in and ask if they had any walk-in specials, and was advised that they did not. I perused the menu, and saw that they had a "Tropical Chicken" pizza with chicken, pineapples and bacon. I asked if I could substitute broccoli for the bacon and the guy said it was no problem. I got a small and it was $12.75. The wait was a bit long, maybe 30 minutes or more, but they were pretty busy, it was a Friday evening. The pizza smelled so good on my drive home! And it tasted just as good. The crust was thick, but crispy on the outside with a nice chew to it in the middle. Not soggy at all. The chicken was cut into tiny cubes, the pineapples were canned and were the small pieces (not the big rings). Broccoli pieces were also small, and really soft, but not mushy. I don't know man, I like my broccoli al dente, my pineapples fresh, and my chicken in big strips, but for some reason I liked the pizza and thought it was delicious. I can't explain it. Four stars from me. I don't even know how, lol. Willy's has 6 locations in Ottawa. This location is in a strip mall. Same strip mall as Sip Tea, and the Barley Mow. Both the quantity and quality of the toppings were good. They do put the toppings mostly under the cheese, which is not my preference, but it was still ok. The crust was thicker than I like, and a bit doughy under the toppings, but around the edges it was surprisingly crispy and delicious. Service wasn't rude, but not the friendliest. The place is super small, so it's literally just takeout. They sell some pizza by the slice too, although varieties are limited. It's $4.99 for a slice, a dipping sauce, a bag of chips, and a can of pop. The slices are pretty big, like almost as big as my "small" pizza. I hadn't been here for many years but had frequented it back in the 90s and early 2000s when the original owners Bud And Rita owned it. It was great back in those days. Today was an absolute shock, disappointment and somewhat disgrace on part of the ownership who were not in the store. When I walked in to the take out restaurant, the pizza slices were sitting pre sliced in the warmer on the counter, they didn't really look appealing however it was 12:30 and I was hungry. The young lady opened the glass door and proceeded to cut the slice in half which was out of my sight. after doing so she collected my $6 dollars and slid me half a slice of cold pizza across the counter. I waited momentarily for the other half but after asking about it, I was told that the pizza slices in the window are actually 2 slices. This is a large pizza cut in to 6 slices then cut again in half . That's 12 slices at $6 each. That's $72 for a large pepperoni pizza. Finding this out was a shock. I actually only took this piece of cold pizza in order to show folks just how criminal this business is. This is the $6 pizza slice and this is my dog eating it. BTW I did taste it, and it was absolutely awful. This business owner should be ashamed. Never again.

I should also note that it felt like possibly the heaviest pizza I've ever held in my hands, which isn't surprising given how loaded it was with cheese and its various toppings. It's a good pizza. I think maybe they went a little too crazy with the toppings and cheese, but everything is so delicious and worked so well together that it wasn't really an issue. I suppose my one complaint is that it was a little light on the sauce, as I could've used some more of it to cut through the richness of the cheese and other ingredients. I got a Hot Turkey sandwich platter $13.75 and a slice of Donair pizza $4. They sell pizzas by the slice, but they are not displayed so you have to ask them what kinds they have. The day I went, if I remember correctly, they had 4 types: Cheese, Pepperoni, Bacon and Donair. Slices are $4 each or $5 with a can of pop. 2 slices is $8 or $9 with a can of pop, so no discount if you buy more. However, they do have a pickup discount, which is the equivalent amount to the taxes you would pay. So essentially if you pick up, they pay the tax :) The Hot Turkey sandwich platter was really good. It came with fries and coleslaw. I liked that the coleslaw was vinegar based and not mayo based. It was mostly cabbage with a bit of carrot. I enjoyed it. The fries were just regular fries but they were crispy and good. The sandwich had real turkey breast meat in it (can you believe that I once ordered a hot turkey sandwich and it was a deli meat turkey sandwich covered in gravy?!? Obviously not at this restaurant, lol). The bread was the regular white sandwich bread, but what really set this sandwich apart was the delicious peppery gravy. Man, that stuff is really good! The sauce has a distinct flavour to it, which I can't pinpoint, but I liked it. The crust was crispy and even though the crust was thicker than I usually like, I still enjoyed it. I liked that the slice came in a cute cardboard box. The platter came in an aluminum container, but the lid was styrofoam. I'm not a fan of styrofoam, I would have preferred a foil-backed cardboard lid. Service was friendly and I got my food pretty quickly. The restaurant is a strip of businesses along Carling Ave just west of Churchill Ave N. There's free parking at the back of the strip. There's a sign and you have to turn in before you actually see the strip of businesses (Georgie's, Sapporo Sushi, and a few other businesses). If you turn into the parking lot after the strip, that one actually belongs to a different strip mall (the one with Markie's Smoked Meat and Mr. Sub). There are signs indicating you can only park there if you are going to a business in that strip mall. Not sure what enforcement is like, but why chance it if there's also free parking in the proper place, right? Since there's a huge median along this part of Carling Ave, you can only access the restaurant if you are driving westbound on Carling. Georgie's has its main entrance on Carling but there's also a back entrance from the parking lot.

I have had a few different types of pizzas here, in the end my favourite is the cheese. Yup, straight cheese. Seems basic, but the flavour is outstanding and the dough ball to keep the box from sticking to the cheese is a classically delicious touch. I really like the flavour combinations of the cheese with the sauce puts many other to shame. If you are in this end of the town, give this place a shot, you won't be disappointed.
