Didn't check the menu for the price of a hot tea ($3.50) or slice of apple pie ($6.50!). So total with tax came out to about $30 and I added a $5 tip. This is a local diner close to my In-laws place in Forrest Ave in Staten Island, NY. Like most diners, the menu is amazing filled with so many options. The place has chrome-like panels like in the 60's. The booth reminds me of Happy Days and the long bar counter is beautiful. As for the food, it is a diner, therefore, the serving are incredibly big portions. The food came out well and the taste is like what you expect from a diner. We were fortunate that we had a wonderful and patient server. This young man took our orders, delivered what was requested and visited us enough time to ensure we are doing well. I've been coming to Olympic Grill since I was a kid (more than 30 years) It's definitely had its ups and downs (very downs) over the last 6 years or so but we went this morning and I was so happy we did! We moved off the island 4 years ago but I needed my youngest of 4 kids to go since it's a tradition to bring all of them! Jessica our waitress was so nice! She even brought our 3 year old a cookie as a surprise when leaving! We had pancakes, eggs, breakfast meats etc, all delicious! One thing I'd change is coffee brand. It was very dark, no fault to the employees. The place was clean too! Pleasantly surprised since our visit in 2022 was anything but pleasant. Glad we went and as long as it keeps up (and hopefully Jessica still works there) we'll be coming every time we come to Staten Island. I think some of these reviews are overly harsh. Not all, but some. Maybe I just haven't caught them at a bad time, but Mike's Olympic Diner on Forest has never let me down. They have 4.1 stars on Google Reviews. The contrast in reviews on Yelp & Google tells me that some people just really like to complain. I've been ordering and getting food in person at Mike's for years now. The food is filling, and delicious quite frankly. However, I do agree that the prices are a bit steep. But I don't order from them everyday. I'm eating them as we speak and keep stopping to eat then go back to typing. Mike's Olympic is my go-to place to order diner food. When I think about eating at a diner, I often imagine a diner in the middle of a dirt road that offers a place of solace and comfort. In this imagery, painted by movies and television, what makes a diner so warm and homey is the nurturing waitress that is friendly, kind, nurturing, and provides a calming presence. That was Doreen for me, who made my dining experience so warm and comfortable. We had some small talk which helped me relax after a long night taking care of our newly arrived baby girl. When I wanted to change my order, she was prompt and wasn't defensive like some others might be. The food was also plentiful and filling, coming out piping hot and delicious. They also occasionally come around to refill our coffee quite frequently, which makes diners feel cared for. Although diner foods have been getting more expensive due to inflation, I believe it's worth it especially with the nice little warm and friendly interactions. The food is pretty good. I've gone here a few times, and have not been disappointed. However, depending on when you go, the crew is different. During the early day, they seem to have attitude and anything you order is always an issue. I wanted a bagel with cream cheese, and it became a whole discussion. In the evenings, staff is nicer and accommodating. It's a diner... I don't see the issue! Lol! The ambience is very pleasant, which makes for a decent environment when you're staying to eat. There were ANTS on the table when we were being seated. ANTS. I didn't notice right away when I sat down, so I had stayed in the same spot for a few minutes, by which point my jacket had some ants over it. For reference, this table was by the back entrance to the left. I moved myself without asking and called over my waitress to tell her about it. She laughed and said she was sorry and that she'll get someone to take care of it. Hint: I sat there eating for over an hour, and no one ever came to "take care of it". So besides the fact my coat had ants on it, I ordered some breakfast plates and could not be any more disappointed. It was like the pancakes were soggy and rushed. The eggs tasted like they came out of a wooden container, and the coffee tasted stale. Really hits you hard when you realize your party spent roughly $50 on meals that weren't worth half that. I was on Staten Island yesterday for a work project. Everything went smoothly so I had time for lunch before heading back. Please let me get this out of the way first. I'm not a fan of Staten Island. Sorry just not. To me the entire island is laid out wrong. Getting from one place to another can be a nightmare, and the Staten Island Expressway, well don't get me started. I guess you'll have to take that into consideration with my review of this "Diner". I've passed Mike's Olympic Diner many times and often thought " I should try this place". I shouldn't have those thoughts. We walk in and are seated promptly. Why not there's only three other tables occupied. A young man come over takes our order and leaves. Of I ordered a hamburger which said it came with mushrooms and fried onions. I prefer sautéed onions but whatever. My associate orders an omelette. Omelette for lunch? Again whatever. I say associate, but he's actually my son wanting to learn the business then kick me out. LOL Back to lunch... 30 minutes and we're still waiting. 30 minutes for a burger and an omelette. A man, who I think was the owner is just walking around drinking a soda. How about stroll into your kitchen and see what's going on. Finally lunch comes out and to my surprise the "fried" onions are actually sautéed onions. After one bite, my roll falls apart because it is so soggy. I cut it up, eat what I can and ask for the bill. BTW I ordered an iced tea with it which came with ice, but the drink was warm and the ice melted in minutes. Took about 5 minutes to get the bill too. Good bye. I gave two stars should only be one but I recently bought a new set of wireless ear buds, then misplaced them. Well when I got in my car a noticed them wedged between the seat and the door. What a shocker that this place only has two and half stars out of 89 customers. I don't feel sorry for writing this review. I've ordered the same thing off the Uber Eats menu the last two times from this place. Shame on me for thinking it was going to be any different this time. I just paid $13+ tip for a grilled cheese sandwich. They keep forgetting the sides that are suppose to come with it. The food is decent but the folks working here are useless, specially when I put in the order notes please don't forget the sides. A little ridiculously at this point. I was so hungry and wanted to find somewhere to eat. Lo and behold I came across this diner on my way back to my hotel. It was quiet and after reading reviews I was skeptical. I still sat down, ordered and let me tell you! I received the best dinner from this restaurant. My uncle wanted pancakes for dinner and enjoyed it! Idk what those other reviews were talking about. I had a chance to eat at Mikes by chance. I'm an old Dakota fan and have been eating at Dakota for more than 25 years. I thought that I was eating at Dakota one morning when I noticed a change in the food. The quality of the food was definitely different. The selection of meat had changed since they moved from larger meaty sausages to smaller links. The waffles were also different, in that they came out cold and quite over done. The quality of the food was not the same as when Dakota owned the spot. The wait for the food was longer than I had even accustomed to. The staff, some of them kept from Dakota, appeared bothered and less interested in making sure that the customers were happy. There was an unpleasant feeling in the place, it was weird. So I visited two more times since then, and the feeling or mood as well as the poor quality of food was still the same. Mikes may have taken over this once exceptional spot, but the new owner will have to work harder to gain customers both new and old, who will make this location a frequent stop for breakfast. read more

Mike's was a great way to change up the routine for us from our normal workday. A buddy and I were catching up on some work issues and we decided to have a nice sit-down lunch. As diners go, Mike's was pretty in line with what you would expect. Lots of mirrors, a lunch counter and the large menu that pretty much consisted of everything. I opted for a meat lovers omelet while my coworker chose a cheeseburger. Both came out together and hot which is a plus. And the help was very friendly and checked up on us throughout our meal. Never too far from a water refill or a question how things were proceeding. The restaurant is clean and well lit with plenty of tables to sit almost any sized party. For sure I'll be back and I'm glad to add mike's to the rotation of places to go for lunch. read more

Open 24 hours every day Accepts cash and credit and even has an ATM machine located outside. Love there milkshakes with whip cream goes perfect with my burger. Thats how I roll. Decent prices. Breakfast, lunch and dinner and also have desserts and a late night munchies menu which is all the fried greasy stuff that everyone loves even though you might have to hit the gym the next day or wake up with some pimples. I was not disappointed and my food was great. The waitress was nice and accommodating. The portions were huge so you did get your monies worth. The negatives were the diner itself. It needed a total make over and it was cold which made me feel that their heat was at a minimum. Something was missing but I can't quite figure it out right now. Ordered a rare cheeseburger the other day from here and it was delicious! And actually rare, as requested, something a lot of places get wrong. The fries were crispy and tasty, not soggy at all, especially since my order was for pick up. The only downside is that it can be kind of pricey. I haven't eaten in many diners in my life. I ate at a diner in Jersey where my family's garage mechanic worked religiously every morning whenever we had to fix our 99' Nissan Quest (which had many issues and broke down frequently), b/c it was cheap and had big portions. Well it's the same with this diner. It's not exactly cheap ranging from $8 - $10 and up, but for the big portions you get, it's so worth it! I have, so far, came here twice for a yearly meet up with my high school teacher and it's amazing. It's nice and quiet and low-key. We usually come late at night and they don't rush us. Each time I got one of their sandwiches. today I got their Reuben sandwich (~ $10.95) which had a choice of corn beef or pastrami and i chose the pastrami. Also came with the option of yellow or golden mustard (chose golden of course ;) Side dishes start with fresh pickles (almost as if they are their original cucumber form), coleslaw. i would say it's worth it - extremely large portions, my sandwich had melted cheese, large chunks of pastrami, all stacked on bread. My teacher got the falafel with Tzatziki salad (which she gets every time so it must be good and this diner is Greek I believe), my friends got the Italian panini press that comes with fries and they got nacho cheese over it. So it was a great meal :)! Notice people come late at night for dessert which must be what they're known for. Atmosphere is a classic diner, simple tables and chairs with mirrors on the walls, has booths, and stools. I live very close to this diner, and in all my years coming here I've never, ever, had an experience like those awful reviewers wrote about. Frankly I think they are fake, a spiteful bunch of people who are out to destroy a very stable, well run , consistent eatery. This has got to be one of the cleanest, "polished til it shines"establishments in North America.
