I don't mind a small store and I am a firm believer of supporting your local retail shops. Having said this, these shops need to be honest and earn my business. I visited Mike's gun shop a few times and never had a positive experience. Total disrespect for customers time, usually his buddies chill in the store shooting the breeze, and customers have to literally wait for hours to be tended to while listening to all the idle bull crap going on unrelated to the shop. What topped it off for me, i was looking at a nice firearm, discussed price and agreed to buy it, I had to wait 8 days for my 30 day wait period from my last purchase (got to love NJ), I offered to give him a deposit for it and he declined. He said no worries I will put it in the back and the piece is yours next week when you are ready. I came back in 8 days, the gun was on the back but now he wanted $200 more for it, he gave me some crappy excuse that he could sell it for more in gunbroker or something. The gun still had the tag attached to it with my name and agreed price. Just feel this guy is dishonest and does not care for its customers, competition these days is fierce, I don't wish him bad; but he will not be seeing my hard earned money. read more

Mikes is cool, most gun stores stress me out but I like Mikes. He does have buddies there but they're always cool I asked them a ton of questions and they all including Mike happily helped me out. I felt very welcome every time and his prices are better than the other spots I've been too. Lastly for a small shop he really has a lot of firearms. read more

Was warned before I came here but got desperate. Was explicitly clear that my Handgun permit expired in a week and they assured me background check would be done before then. I called almost every day for over a week - reminding them of timing - and they kept saying "not today, call back tomorrow, it'll definitely be here". Why I'd have to be the one to call rather than them notifying me is bad customer service in itself. I stopped calling after 10 days when I found out they likely never even submitted it. (NJ site releases days of backlog which was only 2) I presume they were just waiting for an end of week batch. Called after 2 weeks (extended permit) and got the "oh yea we have it, not sure why no one called". I told them I'd rather not buy from them at this point, giving them a sliver of opportunity to apologize and change my mind. Guy said "thanks bud" and hung up. Waited 30 days to be able to buy from one of the half dozen other stores that actually seemed to want my business. If you're desperate go for it, but id personally rather spend money at a place that can do at least the bare minimum to make me feel like they care. read more

I was looking to buy a new AR style rifle and started the process of shopping around. After calling a few businesses Mike's said they had one in stock. They weren't willing to discuss price over the phone so I made the trip over to their shop to see what they had and how much they were asking. The first thing I found odd was how small and cramped this store is. It's not well organized and there's clutter everywhere. There were a couple of guys just hanging out in the store which made the experience awkward as they were inevitably part of my interaction with the owner. I told the owner I had called about the AR and he pulled the only one he had off of the rack. After a brief inspection it was clear this was not a factory NJ compliant rifle. It was a standard Stag Arms Model 1 that the owner had personally converted to be NJ compliant. The workmanship on the conversion was very poor. The flash suppressor had been sloppily brazed to the barrel. The collapsible stock was glued and pinned so it would remain fully open. There were glue drips all over the stock, giving the appearance it was hastily applied. The bayonet lug had been ground off giving the rifle an unfinished appearance. After looking over the rifle I knew it wasn't for me. Out of curiosity I asked him for the price. His response...$1500!! This sealed the deal for me. I handed him the rifle, said "thanks for your time" and walked out. The mere notion he added $650 to the going price for this rifle for the shoddy work he did was absolutely outrageous. Even worse you could buy a higher end factory compliant rifle for $1100! This illustrated to me this guy was just trying to take advantage of someone's inexperience in this game. Based on the condition of his store, the awkwardness of trying to browse his inventory while he carries on a conversation with his loitering friends, the poor workmanship of his gunsmithing & his insulting prices I can't see why anyone would visit this store. read more

He has no respect for his customers and he is extremely dishonest. I picked a Walther PPQ Q5 match with my permit in hand and gave it to him and he made me wait 40 days only for him to tell me he sold the handgun to someone else when he told me my background check was complete. The background check is normally supposed to take 3 to 4 days but he had me wait for 40 days at no handgun in my hands. He is constantly price gouging and raising prices. The Good: I will say this, his prices are really good. Gives a great discount for Police on Glocks, and has a nice decent selection of weapons. I will also say that he sells a lot of accessories and has a pretty good reputation according to "some" people. The Bad: Should just open a bar inside and sell alcohol there too. The few times I've gone there I was ignored or not helped at all. Listen, I'm not a gun person, so I don't know a lot about them. I also don't read gun magazines, then try to show off to people that I know about guns. I'm just a regular Joe. So if I come to your place and I need assistance. Handing me a gun, and walking away really isn't the answer. The few times I went there, I asked for some help, but he was so wrapped up with his friends sitting there, that all they did was BS the whole time to the point where I just said, I'll just come back. It was like a hangout, only you're not invited and you have to watch and listen to them. Honestly, I didn't have a good first impression. I went again a few weeks later and the same thing happened. There are people that just sit there and hang out with him. The shop is small to begin with. Finally, a few months passed, I went back... and it was closed. Tried calling the next day... closed. Now it appears he has a different schedule all together. Like, he's opened when he wants to be. Food for thought. Overall: Honestly, he seems like a nice guy... my problem with him is that he feels everyone that goes to get a gun, knows exactly what they want, and everything is just going to be a smooth transaction. Like give me your money, and here's your gun. It's not... My only advice for him, help your customers out and tell your friends that are taking up space to either help you out, or have them come back when the customer(s) leave. read more

I don't know what all the negativity is about in some of the reviews I read here but I'm a mother of 5 and I went to Mike's Gun shop for the first time last night with my husband and saw all the "clowns" that hung out there and found them to be very entertaining and Mike was definitely the most entertaining and downright genuine. He was extremely fair with his prices and very helpful with info. My husband can't wait to go back there. I think some of the "guys" that go there and complain, just need to drink a healthy dose of "man-up" juice. read more

Very pleased with the firearm availability and interpersonal communication. The owner listened to our questions and offered a great shopping experience in a comfortable setting. There was no pushy salesmanship. Jovial/easy going for first time purchasers while being serious about safety/home defense. Products sold are reputable brands. He carries the ammunition for what he sells and it is in stock during this crazy Covid-19 era. Very fair pricing for a non-chain store volumes. Pricing identified on all firearms as they are presented. Store carried non-lethal self defense items as well (e.g. pepper spray). Will frequent again for additional purchases. Not sure how this place gets 5 star reviews. I was just in this establishment and was mostly ignored. One person was busy helping a customer and there were two other people just hanging out who just spoke to each other. Clearly not shopping but not clear if they worked there. The whole thing just felt weird and uncomfortable. After about 5-10 minutes I was asked if I needed help. Man left to back of store. Came back. Said nothing. I just walked out. No plans to go back. Where do i begin. 1st off this guy isn't in business to make money. his hours say m-f 10-7 and I've been to his shop multiple times between 12-2pm and he's closed and not for lunch but hasn't come in yet. I know this because I've waited for him to open for the day (which really isnt a big deal bc idc if hes successful or not but multiple 20 minute drives for nothing gets annoying). 2nd If you are not a police officer do not expect to receive good treatment(not even if you're military..if you cant give him a PBA card or get him out of a ticket don't expect respect). If you ask a question he makes you feel like an idiot when really this guy doesn't even know what he's talking about. I went to Mikes to drop off my Stag Arms AR-15 one day to get work done on it so it would be legal for me to shoot in the state of NJ (pin the buttstock, cut off the bayonet lug, and change the compensator) and he had me waiting for an hour and a half because cops kept walking into the store and they had priority over myself, and they were just there to BS. After i was finally helped he told me that i could pick my rifle up in 3 days.I called him after the 3 days were up and he said ill have it for you tomorrow. "ok no problem". i was busy the next day so i never called and i didn't want to rush the job so i called him 2 days later. Nope! still not done. what was supposed to be a 3 day job turned into a 9 day job and when i came back to his shop to pick it up he told me to come back in 25 mins because it still wasn't finished. so i went down the street to the mall to kill time. i am confident that he did the whole job while i was gone thats how shitty the job came out. He told me that i wouldn't be able to notice that the rifle was even worked on(you be the judge by looking at those pictures). what i can say positive about him is he has decent prices on guns need for guys OTJ . also his store is about the size of a McDonalds bathroom. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GOING TO MIKES. Not only that, but he also had the best price on the SAR K2 I was looking for - even better than the online sites. It looks like he has lots of hard to find ammo in his shop, too. Why did you have non compliant rifle in the first place to bring to him? Most shops would have turned you away or turned you in. I can see if you had to have it transfered and he did that but you basically walked in and dropped if off? He pinned the stock clean, and you never really know how a pin and weld will come out on a barrel. The one he did on mine was decent but far from the factory LWRC job which looks to be countersinked and welded but that was a 4k rifle so I imagine it will always be flawless. I did the same thing on a Cerakote job and while he said a week and it took over 3 - he still did a good job and it was faster than sending it out to get finished elsewhere and pay fees. Also to the other guy - he is a cop, not a wanna be cop and way to use your internet slang to try and sound like your an "operator" with that taticool BS. Mike can be a little rough around the edges, you just need to toughen up and tell him to go f&(^ himself. He's a good guy and has a good shop...the hours are a pain in the ass but he is a cop so its a side gig. If you joined in the conversations there instead of whining like little girls demanding service you would probably enjoy going here as much as I do - you probably need him more than he needs you right now with the ammo shortage anyway.
