If you like fried chicken, it at Mike's! We have been visiting Fruita to ride for years and finally tried Mike's today for lunch. It was fresh, delicious and filling. We had the 3 piece tenders with fries. The tenders were juicy and large. It was like eating 3 chicken breasts. The fries are thin shoestring fries that were tasty. Don't listen to the negative reviews that complain about what they don't serve. Appreciate a restaurant that focuses on what they do well. We will be back! Not everyone seems enthusiastic about customers arriving. Ambiance: put more fun signs and funny stuff in the walls. Music? It's sort of blah. I heard a lot about this place and decided to try their "famous" chicken! I was not disappointed! My go to is always chicken tenders whenever I order chicken, so I ordered chicken tenders they are big and ordered sweet potato fries as well as coleslaw. They were al delish! My friends ordered the pickle juice marinated chicken (I don't remember what they called it) and she let me try some and it was tasty! MUST STOP! MUST TRY! This little family owned spot is very tasty! It's not a light lunch but every element of our meal was freshly house-made and delicious! We got the Chicken Parm sandwich & the boneless pickled thighs that were deep fried. In both cases the chicken was moist, flavorful and beautifully cooked. The sides - coleslaw & French fries, were equally as tasty. There were several other options I'm excited to try the next time including their bbq pork sandwich. The service is excellent, everyone was so friendly and sweet. We were welcomed with a warm and friendly smile. They really made you feel like you were home. I love the salad with chicken. I have never had a salad with so many different additions to it. The boiled eggs and the beets are just great in this salad. I heard mixed reviews but I was in Fruita and needed a to go option so we tried it. First of all, the only options for chicken tenders is 3 or 10. Three was not enough and 10 was way too much... and very expensive!!! So I was expecting this famous chicken to blow my socks off and I was sadly disappointed. The chicken was very tough and chewy! Every piece was like that it was super disappointing. For the sides and the price we did get 3 choices which is good for the money. The fries could've potentially been good, but just a few minutes in the box made them all soggy and floppy. The green beans were just ok but the side salad was the best thing we ordered. I think they are still new and getting things worked out so I hope they can perfect the chicken and crisp the fries a bit. Also, for a famous chicken joint it would be nice to have more sauce options. read more

The name "Famous Chicken" gave me an impression that there would be pieces of chicken (Chicken breast Chicken Thigh, Chicken legs, Chicken wings) Not the case so I ordered the chicken chips and coleslaw. My husband ordered the six piece wings and biscuit with gravy. Mine was very good, and since six wings isn't a lot of food he was glad to help me with mine. An odd thing for me was that my $13.00 order of chicken chips came with no dipping sauce. In order to get sauce for this large portion of chicken chips be prepared to pay an additional 50 cents for each small container of sauce. For a moment I thought perhaps the sauce must be really extraordinarily special. Nope just a regular little container of sauce. It seemed a little odd that I would have had to either dig for change or use my card to charge 50 cents if I wanted more sauce than the one small container I purchased. read more

I've been waiting to try this place out for a little while now. I followed the building process on Facebook. Today was the day I was able to stop by. Place is a cool "dive" or at least I would call it with a modern twist. Staff was very friendly and nice. After I placed my order took about 10 mins but was smoking hot. The size of the chicken strips were HUGE. They give large portions. The chicken was very moist, tender, and great. Being from the Louisiana were we love a little spice. I wish a little spice was added but still perfect as it was. The Sweet Carolina sauce was on point and great. For the regular BBQ sauce I wish they would make their own cause I know they could come up with something a lot better then pre-package stuff. By far not a complaint though cause everything from start to finish was amazing. I will definitely be going back and if you get a chance I highly suggest make a stop yourself. Amazing food! We stopped by for the first time after a couple of attempts where we missed closing, and we were not disappointed. It was a little weird being the only customers there, but I guess 2:30 isn't around peak hours. Chicken tenders were large and delicious, as were the fries and jojos (larger potato wedges). They have several very unique sauces. Not outrageously priced, and portion sizes on the larger end for sure (2 tenders per person was about good). We will be going back for sure! read more

I guess I should point out up front that I'm from the south where Fried Chicken is an art form. I moved to Grand Junction 15 years ago and I've been looking for something comparable ever since I moved here. Great Fried Chicken is a combination of two things, great tasting crust and chicken that is brined and/or marinated to tenderize and flavor the meat. Some restaurants also employ pressure frying (Colonel Sanders) and many Broaster Franchises like the markets here. I noticed both Safeway and City Market have pressure fryers BUT they never close the lid. Go Figure. Pressure frying prevents chicken from losing moisture although so does brining. Fried Chicken doesn't have to be so seasoned that it sets your mouth (or other parts of you) on fire (Popeye's). Some seasoning however is needed to flavor the crust and meat. So, Mike's most closely resembles to me Grandma's Fried Chicken in a Skillet. The oil has some hints of Crisco shortening and the chicken is essentially unseasoned except for a light flour coating with some salt. The pieces didn't seem brined at all, but were not "too tough to eat". Neither were they "tender and juicy". The Fryer Chickens they are using are on the small side, and the restaurant can't tolerate any waste (due to small volume) so you can only order a whole chicken or a half. They have tenders, but if you really want those, go with City Market. They don't dry theirs out. All in all the chicken wasn't BAD it just was definitely NOT memorable, either for the taste, portions, or tenderness. What was memorable was the price. City Market or Safeway gets about $10.00 to $12.00 for a whole fried chicken. You can order all the fixings there as well. Mikes gets $24.99 for a whole chicken order which does not come with any sides. As to the sides, the cole slaw was pretty good. Fries were shoestring and definitely overcooked. Also, they don't start frying until you order, so don't be in a hurry. This isn't "fast food"! The "dine-in" atmosphere was good. It was clean and spacious. It's a shame, because I think if someone here in Grand Junction or Fruita would go down South and learn HOW to create Great Fried Chicken, I think there would be a market for it. I do think that it would have to be EXCEPTIONAL however, to command $25 per bird. read more
