"Go fuck yourself!" is the last of several outbursts yelled at me by handyman Michael Andrews. He was hired to replace 2 rotted deck boards and repair dry rot on my threshold. At the preliminary meeting, I asked him how much he charged but he would only say, "I will be fair, and I will work with you," waving away my question. I mentioned I did not want to be charged for chatter, as he loves to talk. The oak threshold was warped and had to be exchanged. The 2 porch floor boards were also warped. It took him 3 hours to remove and replace 2 boards, which he did competently. Then he tried to install the new threshold, which was too thick for the space, as the door would not close. We noted the original threshold was not rotted; only the narrow horizontal strip abutting the threshold had rot. I asked several times that he use the old threshold, but he refused, instead trying several time consuming maneuvers, including removing carpet tacking, cutting the edges of the oak threshold, and trying to shim an already too thick threshold. Finally he was about to plane the oak when I protested again. He got increasingly more angry with me for asking he use the original threshold. Finally he waved me away, saying, "Get out of here, I am the professional." When I did not retreat as "commanded," he said, "I don't like you!" Soon after, he made a strange and uninvited attempt to hug me, only to regain his rage when I again requested using the original threshold. He slammed down his tools and left, returning with an additional board to shim the new threshold, which also failed. He finally agreed to reinstall the original threshold and replace only the dry rotted strip, which should have taken 30 minutes (see photos). His bill was $350 plus materials. He finally advised me he charged $85 per hour. We settled on $250, which I thought was excessive, but I was glad the ordeal was over. Later that day, I went out to prime the replaced strip, only to find the vertical door frame abutting the threshold was dry rotted as well. Photos show rotted area, which I cleaned out. He either did not notice or did not bother to advise me. He came over the next morning to see the damage, and began by yelling that he did not appreciate my accusing him of not addressing the additional dry rot. Naturally, I have hired someone else to complete the job. I am a 74 year old woman, and if I did not have better things to do, I would consider reporting him to the CSLB for elder abuse. Anyone who hires him needs to insist on an upfront estimate of charges, guard against his chatter adding to the time charged, and make sure that his work has been completed satisfactorily. read more

A friend referred us to Mike for a project that involved installing a protective box for an outdoor television. He was professional and courteous, and completed the project on time and per the estimated cost. We will definitely rely on Mike for future projects - he's fantastic! read more

Thank goodness for Mike Andrews! Mike has done many projects around our home, and has been a godsend to my mother and myself. He has a unique skill set which is near impossible to find. He recently installed a sealant tarp over our deck and effortlessly matched the color to the wood. Additionally, he has been able to finish projects that our past contractor had left incomplete (and frankly, unacceptable!), and was able locate perfectly complimentary parts. We can always trust him to do excellent work, and he is such a joy to have as company. We appreciate having found him, and recommend him most highly for his knowledge, craftsmenship, and impeccable attention to detail. read more

I needed a handyman and friend recommend Mike. Hey, I'm a single lady - I'm not putting together shit. Quality of work matters but so does being comfortable alone with a stranger. Much less a stranger with tools. Mike assembled some furniture for me and not only did he do a great job, in a timely matter, I felt absolutely comfortable with him in my apartment. And, he took my old furniture to the dump for me! Super nice guy and his prices are on par with other handymans. I would absolutely use Mike again! read more

I wanted to work with Mike, I really did, but you can't work with someone that won't return your call. I called and left a message, and four days later he called and left a voice message apologizing for taking so much time to get back to me. I was OK with that. I returned the call, and left a message suggested dates he could do the job and asked him to call to let me know if those would work. No response after 2 days. I called and left another message, even reminding him I found him on Yelp (hint-hint) and two days later, no response. Today, I called Mr. Handyman (a franchise outfit) and got a very friendly person, booked the job, they are licensed and guarantee their work. While I wanted to go with local small biz, if I wanted the work done, there was no way. read more

I just moved back to the city and my place was a mess. My mother has been ill and I am not currently working while going back to school to try to get a phD so I can (hopefully) help people like her better someday. I hardly know anyone in the city and I am, unfortunately, NOT always the handymiss I'd like to think I am. I nearly killed myself and a vintage lucite coffee table trying to install a light fixture above it that crashed down because I have no clue what I am doing. My skills clearly lie elsewhere. I needed help. The last handyman I worked with had been good but a bit pricey...just decided to bite the bullet and call around again, expecting to pay quite a bit but end up with the job done securely, at least. Can't very well have my mother (or anyone else for that matter) around potentially falling objects in the house. Enter Mike. This is a very personable, genuine, very skilled, creative, funny, and thoughtful person with an arsenal of great stories if you get a conversation going. Mike helped me, not just put up the light fixture, but put up a wall mounted coat rack AND figured out a fantastic design on my porch for hanging 3 old marquee lights I'd just had piled up out there. Awesome, right? More than that, he was wonderful to talk to and LISTENED like he actually cared...and you know what? I think he sincerely does. He took great care of my things, was very clean in the space, and I feel like I robbed him on the job. :( I tried to pay him what I already thought was too little, but he actually was insistent on good will and good business being more important than money. Seriously. That happened. Haven't had a break like that in a long time. I can't tell you how much it meant to not only have a positive experience with a handyman but to meet someone in the world who wanted to just do another human being who was struggling through life a solid and give them a hand up. Mike is a balloon in a field dominated by bricks. Thanks again, Mike! The place looks great and I couldn't be happier. :) read more

Mike helped me fix up all the little things that were falling apart in my apartment. Everything looks and works like new again. He has a good eye for interior design. We have been looking for someone to help us with various projects around the house so we decided to hire Mike to tile our guest bathroom so that we could see, first hand, what level of work he could do for us. And I am very happy to say that he passed with flying colors! I was so impressed by the precision of his work, his attention to detail ensuring that the tiles were all aligned properly. He showed up on time and with a cheerful attitude and cleaned up after himself at the end of the day. We will definitely hire him again, next to redo our upstairs closet! read more

We need work done at our new house in Pacifica. Mike promptly called me back within an hour of my leaving a message; and explained that he no longer traveled that far for work. Most people wouldn't bother calling me back at all. That common courtesy deserves a high rating from me. read more

I had a minor emergency -- door that leads to my back yard falling off the hinges during a bout of rainy weather -- and my own inept attempts to screw the thing back together weren't holding. He answered the message I left nearly immediately and we arranged for him to come by the next morning. I was fully ready to be told I needed a new door, but he got it back together quickly, painlessly and inexpensively. While this was a small, simple job, I'll definitely call Mike again. read more

Mike had done work in my backyard with a friend about 2 years ago. When it came time to do the front yard I asked him for help. He had excellent design ideas and though I had a budget, he worked within it. Not only is the work professional and look great (I receive compliments on it all the time!) but he listened to my biggest priority - that it be easy to maintain! Since then I have asked him to help me odd jobs around the house and he's always come through. Not only will he fix whatever needs fixing, but he'll always give you sound advice on other projects you're thinking about working on in the future. He has given me a great deal of ideas of how to fix up my old kitchen and colors to paint in the house - and he does it all without being pushy or rude. Absolutely the best! We've had a few folks that we've tried for Handyman and other work, but Mike is absolutely the best. He is a pleasure to work with, does great work, is timely and efficient, and just really cares. After he left our home/ project, he called me to offer some extra advice on how to protect our hardwood floors that had just recently been refinished. This was above and beyond, and simply because he cares! The work he did for us was perfectly done, and we are calling him soon for some more projects. Highly recommend! read more

Mike has done several jobs for me. He is conscientious, detail-oriented, practical, honest, creative in his approach to solving problems, and meticulous in execution. If he doesn't think something is worth doing, or if he thinks there is a better approach to the project, or if he doesn't think he's right for the job, he will tell you. On top of all that, he's a lot of fun to work with. It's such a relief to be able to rely on someone like Mike. I trust him. read more

My real estate agent recommended Mike to me a several years ago. After the first visit, I know our relationship will be a long one. He is always on time, detailed and deliver such a quality work. On top of his professionalism, his always kind mannerism made not only me and my all tenants comfortable. Until I met Mike, I always have to be there when a handy man comes and works for the tenant as tenants are not comfortable having a stranger at home and I usually can not trust the quality of work. Oh, he made my life so much easier. All my tenants love Mike. He is a handyman but he also have a wonderful eye on decoration, too!!
