I'm surprised at the reviews who say Bob's rates are expensive. The savings are in the efficiency, skill and creativity--I hired Bob for a ton of odd jobs for our move and he was incredibly efficient and everything he did was great quality work--installing baby gates, building shelves, uninstalling and reinstalling our piano keyboard, uninstalling our Tonal exercise machine, fixing doors, uninstalling smart locks...He is an excellent communicator who doesn't just do the job, he thinks it through and let me know when he would advise doing something differently than how I had asked. I threw a whole bunch of stuff at him and he handled everything with aplomb and had no trouble whatsoever when my instructions weren't clear or loosely defined. Had a great experience with Bob, the Castro Handyman. The bedroom window shade fell down on Saturday. I need a dark room to be able to sleep. I called Bob on Sunday morning and he responded immediately. He determined that the shade had not been installed correctly. He was able to find a great substitute and I now have a darkened room. Bob, you get my first one star review. It's nothing to celebrate, only something to notice. Yelpers, if you read ALL the reviews, they're pretty spot on. The good and the bad. In the end, I don't need a nice guy, I need a kick ass handyman... a handy problem solver. If you hire Bob, you will get more of the former than the latter. (even the really "curious" one where Bob or someone he knows is sleeping and living in the home while the client is away, without permission) I confirmed over the phone with Bob the areas of repair I needed help with -- PRIOR to his arrival and PRIOR to inviting him to come out to help. An outlet that somehow isn't working, cabinets that needed to be trued and drawers retracked, reinstalling a door stop, tightening a door handle, and replacing a window screen. Pretty simple stuff, I had imagined, for most handymen. Apparently not. Bob shows up, nicely dressed, jumpsuit and tools and all, on time, nice demeanor. It seemed from the phone call he was up for the gig, so with reasonable reviews, I felt optimistic. The end result... Bob stinks. Literally and Metaphorically. After arriving and entering my space, he smelled like he hadn't showered in days. I missed the earlier review about him or his 'staff' living in someone's home unauthorized, which he still won't comment about, and my brain wonders if he has a place to stay. If this is your hustle Bob, good on you. Look at the ratio you have on Yelp, and I'd say, nicely done. He suggested replacing the outlet as a solution. It didn't work. He suggested I call an electrician. This is what I wanted to avoid by talking to him beforehand, but at least we had other things to get to. Then came the cabinets and drawers that were slightly starting to not sit flush with each other. Bob investigated and said he had not yet worked with this kind of cabinet and drawer. I think he's referring to the manufacturing brand company or system, and I have to think... at any foundation, it's a drawer, it's a cabinet. These are not anything patented that require a special contractor to fix. He resigned that he could not fix it and recommended I find out who installed it. Next was the window screen that had a tear and needed a replacement screen. He simply passed and said it's not something he can do. (Oh... pardon me, Bob, but I didn't call you here to window shop and cherry pick your tasks... we talked about it all prior to your arrival) Then, I said, well I guess it's just the door stop and door handle. The door stop just needed to be screwed back into the wall and patched. He put it in a new location, which I now realize won't work there, and left the other hole where the original location was, as it was. No attention to detail and cleaning up or completing a job. The door handle was a simple fix involving an allen wrench. We were 20 minutes in, barely, and Bob said that he wanted payment AND had to get going to another job. So, you're in a hurry? Did you anticipate coming for less than an hour, and then billing me for it? This looks and smells like a TOTAL CON. Then when you insist on being paid, after hearing my account that we talked about all the things that need repair, and that only the two basic items could be addressed, I start to get the impression that you only focus on basic level work. Things I would not call a handyman out to do. As we get into the weeds of what unfolded... You tell me it took you time to go get the outlet at the store. Turns out your solution didn't work, and as some times it's no guarantee... but I can see that there is a lack of willingness to solve the problem, combined with a limited skill set. And over the course of the 20 minutes, our 2 minute disagreement about services rendered (and lack thereof) and services that you wanted to bill for, was lost in perspective and story. Bob then later messages me to tell me that if I can find someone who can fix the cabinets/drawers, to let him know. Sir, I am not your teacher, nor the master here. That's what I'm calling you for. Please, do not work the handyman business like the ticket scalping trade. 10 out of 10 times, I do not recommend Bob to anyone that wants actual results from a handy problem solver. Bob is NOT that. If you're looking for a nice guy, go for it. You're better off trying to call someone else, and several others, before calling Bob. read more

After the great reviews, we were very disappointed with Bob. The job was to replace our two bathroom lights and to change the lightswitch over. Seemingly simple. However, he grumbled about switching one of the lights due to its "awkward position" - we ultimately had to do it ourselves with him watching. The second light was not mounted level and skewed to the right and ultimately needed adjustment. We also asked for the old intercom to be removed, and the wall to be patched in its place. Having removed the intercom and grumbling further, he then said "this will take me longer, I will call to come back another day". Leaving a large hole in the wall. He subsequently made no effort to contact us to follow up, and I eventually patched and painted the wall myself. Wouldn't recommend - this was our first and last experience. It created more problems for us than it solved. read more

Bob is not only my neighbor, he's my man. Well, not exactly MY man, but he's definitely THE man when it comes to fixing things around my apartment. He's hooked me up with solutions to all sorts of perplexing questions, like "gee, I have absolutely zero storage space, what to do?" (Bob: "I will build you a custom storage shelf in the alcove above your kitchen, and it won't even cost you that much!") "wow, my window doesn't lock and I live alone, scary! What to do?" (Bob: "I will create custom locks for your window, so you can sleep safely and soundly at night.") "Hm, I really want to mount curtains in my office, but have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! What to do?" (Bob: "I will bring over my ladder and power drill and install your curtains to perfection.") Etc. Etc. Etc. Bob has successfully handled every single handy man query I've put to him, from the mundane (e.g. installing a new battery in my fire alarm, fixing my broken toilet handle) to the insane (e.g. see zero storage dilemma above, mounting valuable art on my ceiling (don't ask), hanging other art with museum-quality precision from my very very high picture molding). He even goes to get parts for you at the hardware store if you (like me) don't have exactly what's needed for the job. All this, AND he drives an electric truck. See? I have had the opportunity to work with Bob a couple of times, and I can honestly say that Bob is not only a good, genuine person but he is also a pleasure to work with. SERVICE: Bob is great at listening and really tries to understand the problem. If it's a quick and simple job, Bob will happily fix the issue immediately. If it's a sticky issue that might require some thought, Bob will work with you until you're satisfied with the resolution. For example, we had a few cement cracks that needed repair. Bob listened to our concerns, analyzed the issues and then presented us with a couple of options, including quick fixes and more long term solutions that would require more resources, time, investment and money. Bob let us select what we were most comfortable with and he was more than happy to answer any follow-up questions we had. RESPONSIVENESS: Each time I've called Bob on the phone, Bob has always been responsive, prompt and accountable. He is always available to help with any handyman / contractor jobs, and he's very accessible and responsive to my questions and calls. He doesn't leave you hanging like other handymen, and he's definitely been very helpful to have as a resource. AREAS HE SERVICES: Bob is not only the Castro handyman but he is also a handyman who services many areas of San Francisco, including Noe Valley, Eureka Valley, Dolores Heights and Glen Park. I noticed that an older review mentioned that Bob does not work in Glen Park, but that is definitely not the case. WORK PRODUCT: Bob works quickly, and he's knowledgeable about many areas of household repairs. Plus, he's very talented! Over the years, Bob has been to our house for all sorts of small jobs. We've always been happy with the quality his work and his responsiveness. He's done things like fix cabinet hardware, cut rebar (so we could dispose of it without stabbing fellow motorists as we drove it to the dump), fix our window closing mechanism and more. The most complicated thing we asked for was new sideboards for a bed. The frame was too small to accommodate a queen-sized mattress so he made side boards to lengthen the bed. Three years later it still works. The last time he was at our place we ran out of things for him to do. That is, he worked efficiently even though he's paid by the hour. We had to scramble to make jobs up to take full advantage of his time. It's also nice to know that Bob is in the neighborhood and that he's easy to find on Castro Street. Somehow I think people with identifiable local addresses are more likely to be accountable. read more

I've worked with Bob over the years, ever since I broke up with the only handy girlfriend I ever had. Who needs a girlfriend, when you have Bob? He's super prompt, polite, non judgmental when you don't know something and comes up with super ingenuous, low tech ways to solve household problems. I called him to remove an old satellite dish from our roof, and he ended up fixing about 5 other minor issues that irked me, but had always been too hard for me to fix myself. We called on Bob to do a basic wiring job for us -- we needed to run a 100ft Ethernet cable from one corner of our apartment to the other. Bob came over, scoped out the scene and did the job nicely. Now we're 100% wired! (No more spotty wireless!!) On his way out, I noticed that our apartment front gate (which has an intermittent problem of catching on itself) had gotten worse. Bob hopped up on a chair, tightened a few things (free of charge) and the gate is in better shape than ever. Also, as a solution for the (now 6) wires running across a doorway in our living area, Bob proposed making a custom molding that was very reasonably priced.
