Get the chicken curry udon!! The flavour was great and the chicken was super tender even though it was a katsu style (which I normally find dry). I also tried the buta and oden udon. Those were ok. I wouldn't bother getting them again. Service was great. The waiters are very friendly and nice.

Love udon, huge portions, can be a bit more on the salty side, can use some tartness to cut through the saltiness. Friendly staffs.

Came on a weeknight around 6:30 pm and it was quiet at first but almost full by 7:30. The staff were super friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. We shared the karaage, which came with a vinegary dipping sauce instead of tartar. Crispy, juicy, and tasty. I had the Maze Udon, which was fun with the "double carb" option: noodles first, then rice added after. The sauce was creamy, somewhere between soup and carbonara, and adding vinegar really brought out the flavor. The Buta Udon with pork belly leaned a little sweet, but the broth wasn't oily and the noodles had the perfect bite. We finished the meal with a matcha cheesecake which was rich in matcha flavour and a NY cheesecake texture. The bathroom downstairs was clean and there's also an outdoor patio that looks great for summer. The neighborhood feels a bit rough but I had no issues getting there and back. This is a cozy spot with great udon and friendly service and I would definitely return more dishes in the future!

Mikaku Udon is an amazing hidden gem this side of town! They have a unique layout to their space with a semi private patio area along with the regular bar and standard seating. Service was great, they were able to answer all our questions on ingredients for their items and they were attentive with us. A quick 15-20 mins for the food to arrive. We got their: - Chicken Curry Udon (very smooth and thick curry sauce) - Maze Udon (with a side of rice) - The meal comes with lightly pickled sides as well that was nice and refreshing The meal was great and filling and the flavors were a good punch. The Curry Noodles were very satisfying as the sauce is super thick and creamy and the udon chewy. The Maze had lots of toppings and it was great to mix in the rice. Would be back again to try out their rose udon, apps, and sides on their patio. Definitely a solid noodle and snacks place.

Mikaku Udon Bar located along Carlton near Parliament is a Korean-owned udon bar specializing in...what else...udon! The restaurant's first restaurant is actually located in Richmond Hill so this location is their first downtown space. The restaurant has ample table and bar seating. The menu consists of a variety of soup less and soup udon. There are also starters and wide menu items as well for sharing (or not) as well as a nice sake list as well. I stopped by Mikaku for lunch on Thursday around 1pm. The place was pretty empty except for a few other customers. I opted to order an oden udon (assorted oden, including rice cake and sausage skewers, served in a refreshing comforting anchovy dashi broth). My order was made at a reasonable time and the udon came with some pickled radishes and pickles. The udon was comforting on a cold rainy day and there were a lot of oden items in the portion. The udon noodles were chewy and had a good texture. The broth wasn't too salty and was hot when it arrived at the table. Service was friendly and staff were attentive. I was able to have my lunch in about an hour. Overall, the udon is a bit on the pricier side (average price is around $20 for an udon) but it was a comforting and warm meal. A good option in the Carlton/Parliament area!

Wow loved this udon spot and the variety they have on their menu! We tried a dry Maze udon as well and a hot broth udon that reminds me of the Samgye-tang chicken soup). Maze udon was really good with a punch of flavours and they gave you a bowl of rice at the end so you can mix the sauce and have it in another way. I had the chicken soup version (samgye-tang-inspired) and it was so nourishing, delicious and recommended by our server as being one of her favs along with the curry udon. I love the thoughtful touch of adding a crispy rice on top to add texture to the dish. I was very tempted to try their cold udon but I'm worried I might be disappointed as I've had in other Toronto places so I can't comment on that. But so far, I can confidently say I love their hot udon options, both dry and with soup. They have a lot interesting options so I'll definitely love to come back to try more. Oh ya and I also tried their fried squid (geso) and it was good too! I love that they included some greens to balance the fried foo, which is totally up my alley. It also seems like all their servers are gorgeous and very friendly and warm.

Vegetable Dumpling Udon

I have been looking jealously at the pictures of their Richmond Hill location (which is out of my geographic range), and so was absolutely delighted to find out that they opened a spot downtown! Of course, I called for a reservation as soon as possible and started exploring their menu. The restaurant was busy but not at peak crowdedness on a weekday evening. Space was a little tight but acceptable given the location. I ordered the vegetable dumpling udon, a unique item which I hadn't seen before. A sip of the broth was enough to sell me - the refreshing and rich flavour was sensational. The dumpling filling was well seasoned and packed in a nicely thin, smoothly textured wrapper. The udon noodles were PERFECT, soft and chewy and just delicious. 110% recommended, even for the non-vegetarians! My friend had the buta udon, and I can only say that it was the fastest I've seen her finish her food...ever. Service was excellent from start to finish as the waitress, in the typical Japanese fashion, made us feel very welcomed and was extremely pleasant to interact with. I think I'm a little in love with this place and hope they maintain the quality, because I intend to keep going back! P.S. I was so taken with what I ate that I went home and promptly ordered it for delivery the next day. Happy to report that it was just as good - and the packaging was tight and secure, which is much appreciated!

Tbh probably the best Curry Udon I've ever had! The curry was well-made with the perfect sauciness, the Katsu was the cherry on top. If you're not a curry fan, don't worry. Their other best seller, the Bacon Rose Udon is also a hit! Huge portions, amazing service and the restaurant is brightly lit with an Izakaya kinda vibe. This is a place you must visit!

Seared Buta

Really liked this place, and this is from someone who is usually indifferent to udon. Think I like how they offer soup-based and soup-less udon, and how even their non-udon dishes are really tasty. We got: - Seared Buta: The pork belly was perfectly seared, filling without being fatty. Also loved the sweetness to it. - Spicy Seafood Cream Udon: A bit heavy on the cream and light on the seafood. Liked the kick of the sauce, and how chewy-tender the udon noodles were. - Beef Brisket Udon: Salty and smoky. Would have liked more beef since it was really tender and tasty. And udon noodles were just as good. - Matcha Cheesecake: Perfect. Not overly sweet or heavy, yet satisfying to my sweet tooth. Place has a very welcoming vibe. Service was friendly, kitchen was quick. Prices were reasonable. They also have a great backyard for outdoor seating during warmer weather. Can definitely see myself coming back here to satisfy my udon craving.

I went to Mikaku udon bar to celebrate my birthday and the staff as well as the food made it a memorable one! The space was clean and spacious, and food was delectable. We got the beef tare tare and takoyaki as our appetizers and they were plated beautifully and of course delicious! My party also ordered the creamy curry udon (I have been craving this since I last ate it), the sausage feast (soup udon), and maze udon (rice is added to residule sauce once udon is eaten). The noodle is all 3 dishes were satisfyingly chewy and the flavours were out of this world- especially the curry udon! The staff provided a cake and sparklers to help make the day special, which was so nice of them! I can't wait to be back!

Torched Buta Nigiri
Sean K.

I stumbled across Mikaku's downtown location one night. This area could definitely use more culinary variety, so I was excited to check it out. We went for a late lunch around 2 PM last weekend, and the place was about half full. We were seated quickly, which was nice since the interior is pretty small with limited seating--only a handful of tables. We shared an onigiri, torched buta nigiri, and the beef brisket udon. Everything was good overall. The onigiri was small but tasty, and the eel on the nigiri was surprisingly generous. The udon was decent too, though I found it a bit on the sweet side. One thing I did notice is that the dishes all had a similar flavor, probably because they used the same sauce or kewpie mayo on everything. The service was warm, friendly, and attentive. I definitely plan to return to try some of the other udons they offer. It's a cute little spot that's worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood!

This is a Japanese restaurant specializing in Udon. This is the restaurant chain's third location. The first location was an Izakaya. The second location is mostly a Udon restaurant. This third location combines the two concepts. There is plenty of indoor seating. There is a bar area and a partially open kitchen. There is a big pizza oven in there because the previous restaurant was an Italian restaurant. The customer service was good, as expected at any Japanese restaurant. This location soft-opened on 2024-09-10. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2024-181

Fantastic Udon spot. Based on the other reviews, my friend and I got really lucky with our walk in and immediate seating. Most of the tables were full when we walked in but they had quick turnaround time! The restaurant itself is bright and neat, though the out of commission pizza oven that sits behind the bar looks a bit silly and out of place. The service here is prompt. They are quick and great at their jobs. I ordered the Buta Udon and my friend ordered the Bacon Rose Udon. I really liked the ultra meaty umami broth. The udon was very bouncy, but you do have to eat it fast because it can get soggy quickly. I asked for chili peppers on the side and they gave me a tiny plate of thinly sliced Thai chilies. This dish rocked. It hit the spot so hard that cold rainy day. My friends Bacon Rose Udon was fantastic too, great bacon flavour, the rose sauce was rich but not too heavy. Honestly both dishes were the perfect amount of food. We left satisfied, not too full, and not hungry. Great experience overall!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn. If you do try out this place, expect great katsuya.
