I love eating in Mikado ever since they opened in downtown. We frequent West Edmonton location and love the food. Unfortunately, today I ordered their Seafood Udon and it turned out to be a disaster. "Seafood" consisted of 4 shrimps. The udon included of lots of boiling hot broth, lots of noodles, 4 pieces of carrot and a couple of springs of brocolli, in addition to 4 shrimps. The broth smelled fishy and I started to feel sick almost immediately. For $19- it was the worst good item I ever ate at Mikado. read more

5 years since my first review of Mikado and not much has changed. Service is still top notch. Food is just as exquisite, although the prices have risen. Since the pandemic, the hot clothes to wash your hands seems to have vanished. But pretty much every thing else is the same. Still my go-to Sushi place, and still my go-to for special occasion place (ie: Birthday's/Anniversary/etc). read more

I looooove Mikado. I've been here for a few times when I moved from NYC and i must say I've been to soooooo many sushi places in NYC and Edmonton's Mikado is probably in my top 10. Sashimis tastes fresh, Sushi Rolls are yummy! all other cooked food are amazing too. My daughter loves the Chicken Karage so that's really great lol the restaurant has these booths and it's great to reserve if you have kids. Good service and i like the ambiance too! This is our go to sushi place because it's so close to our house and we love these rolls: brad roll & mango tango roll. The service is always excellent and the salmon sashimi is like BUTTER. However, they lost a star because their staple appetizers: the salad and soup are AWFUL and their prices are just OK. read more

Best sushi I've ever had! I always get the same rolls, the Brad rolls are my favourite, I also get the tempura shrimp roll, and dynamite roll. I also love the avocado roll, and the red rose roll. The Brad roll has tempura shrimp and avocado and it's wrapped with salmon. The tempura shrimp roll is very simple, it's just tempura shrimp, wrapped in avocado. I think everyone knows what's in a dynamite roll, but it's tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, spicy sauce, chopped scallops, tobiko, and mayo. Best dynamite rolls I've ever had though! And the avocado roll doesn't have any seafood, it's just rice with avocado wrapped in avocado. The red rose roll is bbq eel and avocado, wrapped in salmon or bluefin tuna. The staff is amazing, the place is always clean, and authentic, and it's fairly well priced for good quality sushi. I only come to this sushi place. read more

Happy we made reservations on a weeknight for 7PM as when we arrived there was only one other table unoccupied. We were seated in the last booth at the back which was great for less traffic and it seemed less noise too. They had a few specials on the sushi but I didn't order any of them. We looked over the menus and it took a few minutes for our server to come take our drink and food order as it was busy. We decided to share the deep fried tofu for $7.50 and we received about 10-12 nice and crispy pieces of tofu. I ordered the sushi bento ($23) with chicken, rice, tempura, spring rolls, and sushi. My friend had the beef bento ($22) that came with chicken and beef but no sushi. The bentos come with miso soup, edamame, and salad which all came out shortly after we ordered. My friend also ordered sushi so by the time our meals arrived, we were getting full. There was a lot of tempura, about 6 pieces with 2 shrimp and 4 vegetables. I ate that and the spring rolls and took the rest home. The bento box alone would be enough to make me full. The service was very friendly and our server removed our empty plates promptly. I enjoyed our meal and didn't feel rushed to enjoy a relaxing dinner. Would return again and make a reservation again! read more

Came here for dinner on a Sunday. Called ahead and they were able to fit us in. Good thing too as they were busy. Nice little place. There were some private rooms and some booths. Good atmosphere - not too loud. Great for families or even for date night. Food was great. We had tempura udon and coast to coast sushi and sashimi - delicious. Sushi came in a boat with netting which the kids liked. Ended with green tea ice cream. Staff is friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our time there. Even forgot my son's trainer chopsticks and I came back later and they had it at the front. Great service. Will be back next time we are in town. read more

Came here with the whole fam jam (and yes that means 7 and 4 year old in tote) after Yelp Shops Local on Saturday. The little guy requested "muffies" which means maki in his world. I love how they bring you warm wash cloths to clean your hands when seated; they are definitely scented with something - eucalyptus or a mint, perhaps? We ordered a smattering of everything off the menu. The tempura Udon was good but nothing to write home about - I've had better Udon elsewhere. The tempura veggies were good - light and crisp. We shared a beef bento box which was good and the kids devoured that right up. Miso soup was standard and salad was good as always. The Beef Yakikinu (spelling?) was probably my favourite. I loved that it's served over steamed/grilled veggies/cabbage/bean sprouts - yum! We had the house Dynamite Roll which really was fantastic as noted by other reviewers. Also opted for the spicy tuna kamikaze with sesame seeds - YUM! Everyone left with happy tummies though I will say the tab runs a tab higher here than I'd like. But what can you do, it's oh so yummy! Excellent service here today. Possibly exceptional. I arrived for a quick and late lunch alone and was excited to be back in the city and have a couple of my favourite menu items from good old, reliable Mikado. However, I was disappointed to find the only two items I wanted were no longer options on the menu. Insert sad face here. I'd say this is the only hold back from a five-star lunch rating. YET, I was absolutely happy to have the chef say he would make both items: The Kamikaze Cocktail Appetizer and Tekka Don. My faves from this particular sushi joint. I would like to give Mikado a better review, but... Honestly, their food is good and fresh, and service is good, but I find the food a bit of a rip-off. My husband had the Teriyaki beef, which he loved. It came done how he liked (medium) and stayed nice and hot on a sizzling platter. It came with miso soup and rice, and we feel he got a decent deal at $18. I had the Chirashi, and at $24, the most expensive Chirashi I've seen yet, I found it disappointing. Chirashi should be a bowl of rice covered with proteins. While the pickled ginger, seaweed shreds and lettuce made it look pretty, it also made for cheap toppings. It didn't have any roe, just finely chopped mushrooms. There was actually very little seafood for that high a price. I won't order it again. Not at that price. read more

We love to go for Mikado Mondays, our own made up lunch event at least once a week. There is ample parking and generally the wait is not massive if you go around 1145 or 1245. Between then it is not overly lengthy, but plan ahead to avoid the rush! I've really only had one dish at Mikado, bento box A4 with chicken, beef, salad, tempura, and rice. The price is more than reasonable. The taste and flavours are virtually always consistent at Mikado. You always get a hot towel to cleanse your hands before eating and their tea is quite nice too. Seating is either at a table, the bar, or a private room with sliding doors which is a hoot. The only gripes that I have are that once in a while, service can be quite prolonged and delayed, and the portions are inconsistent, in that sometimes you get three pieces of chicken and sometimes four. Sometimes the beef is plentiful, sometimes not so much. It would be nice to have certainty in what you are getting. Apart from this, Mikado is magnificent, and you need to go check it out. read more

My brother who lives in Vancouver likes to sneer, "Gross, prairie sushi!" whenever I talk about having sushi here, like he's so fancy now that he's a west coast transplant. And while I am not saying that sushi here in landlocked Edmonton is quite to the calibre that they are lucky enough to get on the coast, the sushi that you receive here at Mikado is really really good. I've been to all of the locations in the city and while I don't prefer one over the other, the one in closest proximity to my house usually wins out. West side is the best side! All of the locations look very similar inside, very clean with birch wood and light colours everywhere. My boyfriend and I took my out of town cousin here and he was really excited about it from the moment he checked out the menu online. The wine list is very small and so is the cocktail menu. There is lots of sake to choose from and if I wasn't still off sake from my fall trip to Japan I likely would have had some (I had a bad night with sake over there, it may be a while before I drink any again). Decent beer selection and high end spirits choices for well brand prices. Since we were lucky enough to have this meal expensed we decided to go all out. Appys (oysters and gyoza), 3 different kinds of rolls and the boat! I've never had sushi from a boat before and all three of us were really excited to have it. The presentation was stunning and it was super fun to eat off of. There was a mix of sashimi, nigri, several rolls and chop chop with roe, all of it absolutely delicious. We tried the Mango Tango roll which was totally awesome (bbq'd eel, mango, avoccado and red pepper), the Crispy Roll (it was a summer special one and I don't remember the ingredients, though I'm sure it had crab in it, and it was amazing) and the Godzilla Roll which was my least favourite of the rolls (it had the pickled ginger right in it and to me the ginger overpowered everything else and was all you could taste, but my boyfriend loved it so maybe you will too). They tried to tempt us with dessert but we were too stuffed. Service was good, the restaurant was about half full. I would expect it to be more full on a weekend or when it is colder out, people tend to gravitate towards patios in the summer. Oh, if you're here for lunch get a bento box. They are great here. I prefer this location to others as it has private dining rooms for families to enjoy at no additional cost which means the folks on dates aren't side eyeing my kids drinking their featured "Kids beer". The food is fresh but service is generally slow so we expect a wait at the table. It's next door to Chapters which is convenient to browse on a night out after dinner. read more

The Mikado is one of Edmonton's premier chains of Japanese restaurants. I ventured into the new west end location this afternoon for a snack. The place is much larger on the inside than the small storefront implies. Very white, clean, well-lit. I loved how the servers were dressed in traditional robes. I found the menu to have an excellent selection of sushi, as well as beef and chicken dishes. I went for an order of vegetable tempura, which was delicately arranged in an upwards motion. Two large pieces each of carrots, squash, yam, broccoli, and zucchini, served with a soy dipping sauce - it tasted as good as it looked. My guest had one of the lynch specials, called chicken nanban. Several thinly sliced pieces of chicken breast were tempura breaded and served in a soy sauce and topped with house-made tartar sauce. It almost reminded me of fish and chips - except it was chicken! However, the soy sauce brought me back to reality and added a very delicious flavour kick. We were both eyeing several of the other dishes such as teriyaki beef and chicken, udon noodles, and yakitori skewers. Numerous vegetarian selections are clearly labeled on the menu. Although Mikado is a bit pricier than other Japanese restaurants I have visited, the service and quality accounts for this. read more

Seems really silly as I was willing to pay the extra $2 I was quoted which is a bit much for a sub IMO but whatever. She then came back and said they couldn't do it. I can't imagine why not?? Playing the former Vancouverite card yet again. Mikado has proven itself to be consistent in both food quality and service. We have never been disappointed since we moved to Edmonton 5 years ago. Our go-to dishes usually are: beef tataki, dragon eye, deluxe sashimi and some nigiri sushis. My personal favorite lunch box is A-2. Good food, good value! read more

I have always enjoyed the food at Mikado. My first experience was at their downtown location, followed by their southside location...both scoring very well and making me want to come back. I was very delighted to hear of a new west side location opening up. Their food is very delicious, although a bit expensive...otherwise I would always be here. As I walked in, I was greeted with a different layout than the other restaurants. There are a lot of booths lined with white leather...a nice touch although may have been a poor decision practically as you can see all the dirty marks. Regardless we were seated in one of the rooms and sealed off with decoration-engraved sliding glass doors. The menu is what you would find at their other locations. You HAVE to try their Dragon Eyes...their sauce is something specials. Sushi pizza is also a good choice, as well as the Tsunami Salad. If you want to share a lot of sushi with a group of people, the Coast to Coast (served in a wood boat) is highly recommended. If you're looking for a full meal deal, the Bento boxes have always filled me up and have offered a good variety of food for my taste buds. Their creations all come at a high price, but you will not be disappointed. read more

Mikado represents, quite simply, the finest sushi in Edmonton. Expect to pay a bit more to eat here, and definitely make a reservation (even over lunch) if you prefer a private room to the long public tables or the sushi bar. The atmosphere is simple and elegant, with wooden beams and rice-paper lights. The wait staff are professional and very helpful with course suggestions. Much has been said about Mikado's signature dish, the lightly battered and deep-fried salmon rolls known as 'Dragon Eyes', so I made sure to order them. They really are as good as everyone says, and the bold and spicy sauce gives them a real kick. I also ordered a "Deluxe Bento Box", which includes the following items: Rice and Miso Soup Various Sashimi Ginger Beef Shoga-yaki Deep Fried Prawns & Fish Teriyaki Grilled Salmon Green Salad Everything was plated nicely and service was reasonably fast for a very busy lunch. The Deep Fried Prawns were hot and light and airy beyond belief, as if they had come out of the frier only seconds before. The shredded ginger beef was a little light on the ginger, but that kept it from overpowering the other selections. The sashimi was incredible -- melt-in-your-mouth delicious -- but the Teriyaki Salmon was a tiny bit dry. I realized halfway through the Bento Box that I had bitten off more than I could chew with the additional Dragon Eyes on the side, but it didn't take much encouragement from my guests to help me out. The two (not very Japanese traditional) desserts I tasted were amazing, but I was disappointed to hear that they weren't made in-house. Perhaps this is a bit of a compromise in a sushi restaurant in a western city. There are 4 Mikado locations in Edmonton. This review represents only the West location. Had a lunch meeting here and it was pretty busy for a Monday. Service was great and extremely polite, but a bit slow since they were so busy. I think the towels you get when you're seated are a nice touch! The sashimi bento at $18 had a lot of food: soup (which unfortunately they forgot, but I didn't realize until the end), salad (love the dressing!), tempura (large portion including 2 shrimp), chicken teriyaki (fatty with the skin, but I didn't mind it), sashimi (2 salmon, 3 tuna) and a huge portion of rice. Great option for lunch though a bit pricier than some alternatives. Quality was definitely worth it. read more

Stopped here for dinner, and were disappointed in the quality of sushi, especially for the prices. Two adults and two kids ate for $86 excluding gratuities, which I find very high. We ordered two miso soups (quite good), spring rolls, rice for two, mixed tempura (pretty good, but it's tempura...) deep fried tofu, and three rolls: dragon, sunrise, avocado. The sushi was cut unevenly, too large to eat comfortably, and not all that great. Wish we'd stopped at Tokyo Express, where we could have gotten average sushi for half the price. read more

We've been to this location a number of times and typically enjoy our experience. The staff are friendly, the food is good, and it usually means a good time. On our last outing, I felt the need to leave some commentary. The kitchen was under pressure, which led to a somewhat disjointed delivery of appetizers to entrees. Not a deal breaker, but the lack of communication left us wonder where some of our appetizers had got to. We did eventually receive them and they were tasty, but by then we were into our main courses. Where the food is concerned, I have to be critical of the sushi. The last few visits, I've noticed that the chef always includes a hunk of wasabi between the fish and the rice on the sushi. Personally, I hate this. I hate wasabi in general. I like having the option on the side, but to have it forced on me in the sushi really sucks. The sushi is good and stands on its own without the wasabi. I start enjoying a bit of sushi and then comes an unexpected burn. Otherwise, love the place. The sake is quite good, the food is amazing and the staff are great. Just lay off the wasabi. I rarely ever write bad reviews, but after my experience here last night I definitely felt the need to do so. I have been coming to Mikado of all locations for many years. As such, I am quite familiar with what the dishes should look like and what quality to expect every time I walk in here. And I must honestly say that last night was a huge disappointment. There are three dishes that I want to emphasize on specifically - Dragon Eye, deluxe sashimi combo and mango roll. The rest were more or less acceptable. As soon as the Dragon Eye came out, I immediately realized something was very wrong. The rice to meat portion was 4 to 1. It was literally a half inch worth of rice and a dot of salmon in the middle, about 1 cm. It never used to be like this. Even if you look at some of the old pictures of dragon Eyes on here or on urbanspoon, you'd find that the salmon to rice ratio was always quite proportional. Not really sure what happened to this dish last night, but if this is one of their so-called signature dishes, this definitely needs to be changed back to how it used to be. Now the sashimi - fish was fresh, tasted good. However, the sliced were cut very unevenly to the extreme. As most of you probably know, all slices should be quite equal in size. While some were not bad, the salmon and the tuna were sliced very poorly. Some were about a centimetre thick, some were paper thin, and some you could tell were not cut by the one long slice method, but rather sawed off because of the rough edges. Again, it never used to be like this. The mango roll were cut into good bite sizes but poorly wrapped. As soon as I picked it up with chopsticks, it crumbled like a sand castle. I hate to say this but I've had better rolls at Tokyo Express than that. Not that Tokyo Express is bad, but it's not quite in the same category as Mikado, so Mikado's rolls should be at a higher standard where customer can come in with confidence that certain quality can be expected. Other than that, staffs were friendly. Food came out quick. Just the quality wasn't quite Mikado. Would I come back? For sure, giving it benefit of the doubt, maybe it was just a one time bad experience, so I definitely will come back at least couple more times to verify this before I cross it off my list for a very long time. Hopefully next time I come in it will be back to mikado level quality. read more

I am sad to have to only give Mikado three stars after today's experience. If not for the superstar efforts of the service staff and the manager, they might have only received two. However, they were sincere in their apologies, removed the items from our bill and asked us to return to give them another chance. Since I have been a patron of theirs for the last fifteen years, I will give them another try the next time I am in Edmonton. The trouble began with my salmon sushi pizza - the rice cake beneath was not just lightly roasted, it was quite burnt (on both sides). I ordered salmon sashimi as a replacement. It was definitely fresh, but the size of the pieces was inconsistent and rather on the small size for the price. The major offense though was the little bone in the last piece. (Oh dear...) On a positive note, my mom's lunch bento box was absolutely perfect. read more

I'm not a massive fan of sushi (I can just imagine everyone freaking out) but my coworkers and I visited here a couple of weeks ago. As usual, we order the Bento Boxes. With Japanese restos, I always have to make sure there is no shellfish anywhere in my dish. So they accommodated me with extra tempura veggies. That was a good touch. As for the atmosphere, it has a modern decor and have special rooms for larger parties with your own privacy by just sliding the door. But nevertheless, sushi is sushi. So it's all the same to me. I don't think there isn't an experience that would a Japanese resto any different. read more

Normally I don't order cooked food but noticed the beef teriyaki at the next table looked too good to pass up. I was not wrong the sauce was done just right. Sushi is one of my favourite things.....but....not the stuff we had this past weekend. It was a special occasion, and because of enjoyable visits to the south side location, we went to the west end Mikado. Sadly we were disappointed in many ways. First, the tatami room was just a room...the kids were disappointed to not take their shoes off! LOL. I was ok ok with it though. The kids enjoyed their fancy pop while we waited TOO long for order to be taken. The server was friendly but not very knowledgeable or attentive. Entrees arrived at very different times and the sushi orders trickled in. Quality of the sushi was poor . The rice was not pressed well and fell apart once picked up. Portions were not consistent and some appeared sliced ahead of time and dry to the touch. I doubt I will return to this Mikado and may affect going to the others as well. This lunch was not worth 131 dollars. read more
