Gintaro Japanese Kitchen is a spacious restaurant that recently opened. Service was attentive and majority of the food I had was really good. They have a large menu which includes rolls, sashimi, katsu, teppanyaki, donburi, noodles and more. They have an opening dine in promo right now where you get free miso soup, gyoza, and green tea if you follow them on Instagram! Special Fish Salmon Nigiri $3.5 each- Not specified on the menu but you can ask for salmon nigiri shaped like a fish. It was very cute! Calamari Tower Roll $18- Fried squid on top of of sushi roll with avocado, crab meat and salmon. Calamari was crispy and the rolls were tasty. Cheese Katsu $18-This was delicious! Katsu was warm and crispy. Perfect with the cheese It came with a bowl of salad, dipping sauce and rice. Atlantis Pressed Salmon Sushi $18- A bit too creamy. I think too much mayo was used and I couldn't taste the salmon. Salmon Sashimi $17- I was impressed by how thick, juicy and fresh it was. It came with 7 pieces. Overall I had a decent experience and wouldn't mind coming back for more.

This liitle gem is quite hidden in a residential area and even more hidden in a small shopping complex/strip mall. Place is cozy and great little date spot. We took this order to go as we live near and the chefs waved from the kitchen and wished us well/happy eating. Very nice people. Ordered: Dynamite Roll $8, 6 large pieces, classic - not super exciting, large size so happy with just 6 pieces, great fresh flavor 10/10 for what I expected. Crunch Roll (Fantastic Roll): $13. 8 pieces, loved loved the potato flake. 10/10, would 100% highly recommend and get again. Castledowns (Frying Roll): $14, 6 large pieces, great flavor, very large, not too spicy, 10/10, my favorite this round. Atlantis (Gintaro Battera): $18, 6 pieces, this one was a letdown for the price. very dry like they forgot to add a sauce. Salmon was very dry. 6/10 will not get again. Overall was really happy with the quality and quantity of 3/4. Will 100% recommend this place for great sushi.

Too much sauce on everything overwhelming the flavours. You will like it if you like the taste of mayo. Fresh sashimi and sushi. Delicious tempura. EXPENSIVE. Big spacious restaurant, tucked away in North side edmonton. Service is tolerable but very slow. I visited twice on two different days to get a good feel about this place. It's tucked away in a residential shopping area which you probably would never go to unless you lived nearby. But the upside is there are not many good Japanese restaurants in Northside edmonton. Inside it feels more like an open concept vietnamese restaurant. No privacy between tables and I could hear convos of people sitting all around me. So it doesn't have the typical special occasion feel to it. Menu is very extensive. I noticed alot of the rolls or appetizers come with lots of sauce. I personally am not a fan of sauces with Japanese food as it overwhelms the taste of the fresh fish which I prefer. Because of this reason, all the sushi rolls were a miss for me. Beautiful presentation, but i could just taste sauce on most sushi because everything is smothered in it. Even the salads were drenched in sauce making the dish overwhelming. Ick. Dont get any of their salads!!! They were a complete disaster. The sashimi was soooo fresh and delicious and they gave a nice variety of fish. I didn't like how there wasn't two pieces of each fish, just one so some I didn't get to try...also my Instagram friend who came on a different visit definitely got better platter bc I got 1 peice of surf clam instead of ameobi. Which isn't comparable at all. But don't expect regular folk to get any of those special perks. Being elite and an instagrammer for many years....restaurants are consistent and don't really upgrade they dishes for us. Just plate them a bit more prettier for the pictures. So be warned as what those instagram pictures show are not what you should expect or get when you order it!!! Tempura was thinly cut and fresh and very tasty. Everything else was good but didn't really stand out. I actually liked how they serve tea by pouring each cup so it's hot and fresh. Downside is that I had to wait about 10 minutes when I asked for a refill bc they were so busy! So it's a good concept, but they should go around a bit more frequently with refills (or provide bigger cups). Eating with no fluids available was kinda torturous. This is why I minused a star. Service is slow. Both nights meals took over 1.5 to 2 hours. Usually I can go to mikado in and out in 45 min...but they are new and working out the kinks so hopefully this isn't how it is everyday. I imagine it was busy because November is their opening month and they had instagram specials: free tea, miso soup and gyoza, which ended dec 1 (btw). Place was packed for weekday nights. So that's great to keep food served fresh! Overall. Food was good, fresh but pretty expensive. I ordered same as my usual...and it's definitely more pricier than mikado by about $20 more. So we are talking upscale prices for Japanese dishes. About the price as the most expensive Japanese restaurants in edmonton. So be prepared for a meal for two to easily cost $80-$90. As this is what it was on both nights. When typically it would be around $60ish at mikado for the same amount of food. Minused a star bc i hope its consistently fresh with these prices. Overall it's good and I'll spend more as long as it's fresh everytime. So very happy to see a place open close to home!

My first time here and I thought the food was pretty solid! My favourite was the Atlantis pressed sushi with seared salmon, spicy mayo, cream cheese, and jalapeno. Melt in your mouth delicious! The fried prawn tempura was warm, crispy and tasty. The fried squid legs were good but a bit on the chewy side. We received complimentary miso and gyoza because we follow their Instagram account. Overall the food was well seasoned. As soon as we walked in, the staff greeted us and seated us right away. They were attentive and very friendly. I appreciated the fact that they have high chairs available for the littles. The restaurant is very classy looking, clean and spacious. The washrooms were also very fancy with chandeliers for lighting! The environment was very relaxed. I liked looking at the monitors which showed pictures (slideshow style) of the various menu items. Gave me ideas of foods to try for my future visits!

It was nice to see this gem of a Japanese restaurant nestled in a quiet neighbourhood on the Northside. I often hear there's not a lot of Japanese food options in that part of the city. We found the menu at Gintaro large with lots of options. The food was tasty, the fish was quite fresh, & our service was prompt! Our server was attentive all evening. They were quite busy when we went on a Monday night too! Which I take as a good sign :) They're worth a visit, esp if you have Japanese food cravings and don't want to drive downtown from the Northside!

Great hidden gem on the north side. We ordered the Castledowns roll which was super good but next time I'd ask for less of or the sauce on the side because it's pretty sauce heavy! We also ordered box D - the sashimi and roll box. I feel like this is such good value, the sashimi was high quality, the tempura and crispy and fresh and not greasy. The salad was good - but they are a little heavy handed with the dressing, seems to be a theme there. Service was friendly, we were there after the lunch rush so they were sharing a staff meal and everyone was very nice. The decor is nice too - the waterfall wall is very pretty. I'm thankful for Yelp and some local food bloggers because otherwise I might never have tried this place or known about it!

There are only a few good Japanese restaurants north of 127th Ave in Edmonton, so Gintaro is a great addition to another Japanese restaurant on the Northside. Having eaten here many times since they opened last year, the consistency and quality of food has remained the same and food always tasting delicious with decent prices and portions. Friendly staff with great service and atmosphere.

This unassuming place was absolutely amazing, super fresh food made with perfect skill, friendliest service. You must try it!! You will NOT be disappointed. A true hidden gem in YEG.

And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

So this review is a bit late but thought I should still write it as my Dad (who only ever really…read moreenjoys eating steak and potatoes or sometimes a pizza) thought this was a good enough restaurant to return to. So what made it that great that my dad would give it such a high review? First, if you've never seen an advertisement for this place, prepare yourself for ongoing talking and some well rehearsed comedy from the chefs. There literally is a live cooking show being done with your meals right in front of you. This combination of humour and meal prep was a big hit for my family (the 5 of us were constantly commenting on how things were being cooked, what was new to us and encouraging the ongoing trials of the fork toss plus the salt and pepper tossing trick by the chef). Second, it might be a Japanese place but they have steak! You may have guessed with my intro but that was an important decision factor in choosing a restaurant. We wanted a different place for the early Christmas family gathering but something everyone could enjoy. Third, they're very diligent about respecting allergies. My sister-in-law gets very ill with her allergies. So it's nice not having to worry. They set her food specifically on one area of the grill and no other food was ever placed there. Hers was never combined with the rest of ours either. They also had a different soup for her to enjoy and did a vinaigrette on her salad instead of the house dressing. The food itself is a decent price for a fine dining experience and what you get with the dinner. There's soup, salad, grilled shrimp, grilled veggies and whatever you choose as your main. All with great flavour and you get two different dipping sauces - one being better for meat and other with vegetables. Obviously if you select the options of more seafood to accompany the main piece of the meal, the price is more expensive. We all kept it pretty simple. Two with shrimp dinners, two with New York steaks and one with teriyaki beef. We were all quite happy with our portions and if you feel you need extra rice, they will bring more out. If you have saved a bit of room, there's lots of dessert options too but that comes with an additional price. I really was quite happy with that large selection of mocktails to try but for those that want it, there's a large selection of mixed alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, etc. The place is accessible from the outside doors to the grill tables and even though my brother struggles to see in dim lighting, there's enough random lighting that we found a well lit spot at the table for him. I liked that I didn't have to watch for random levels or steps. There are a few booths throughout the restaurant for those that maybe want a more secluded meal but there's no grills for those spots. So after such a glowing review, why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well as I had booked ahead of time and specifically gave a number of 5 people for the reservation, it would have been nice to know we would not have anything started to be cooked, nor our meal order taken until they fill the rest of the table around the grill. If I had that information, I could have easily invited a couple of friends to join. However as this came to us as surprise, it meant even though we didn't know who was joining us, we were forced to awkwardly wait over 15 min to have them arrive and then start giving our order when they were ready. At least some of the drinks had made it out by then but the place was starting to fill up so the noise level was increasing. Luckily for us my mom randomly know the couple that was sat at our grill table but there were parts of the dinner you could tell they would have enjoyed having their own time as a couple (as I'm quite sure they weren't informed they'd be part of a bigger table being that they were surprised that my mom thanked them for arriving on time so we can now order when they are ready). It would have also been a different experience for my family too without the combined table situation. I had to remind the chef who's steak was being prepared due to the over eager guy wanting a well done steak the same time as a medium rare... Things eventually got served to everyone but only because I spoke up, I was able to get near to what I had requested (glad that my dad at least got his medium rare) even though everyone had reconfirmed orders when the chef was placing the meat on the grill. Lastly, the noise in the restaurant was so high at the end of our meal that not only did my dad stop trying to have a conversation but so did the rest of us. So instead of savouring dessert, I ate it quickly as all I wanted was to pay the bill fast and just leave the noise. I've gone once before on a week night back in April and it was more manageable for noise level. This being due to not all grills were full nor was the restaurant as full.

I didn't even know Sherwood Park has a Japanese Village and I hadn't been to one in about 15 years. Our server did a great job of taking our drink orders, filling up our water glasses and making sure we were happy. I personally started with a pint of their house beer and the Tuna Sashimi. Both were tasty. For my main course I had Teppan - Yaki Dinner (Teriyaki Chicken) It came with soup, salad and green tea. Our grill cook was a nice young man who brought a smile to our face and kept us chuckling. For the value, I was happy with my meal, the price I payed and the fun interacting with our cook.
