This is my second time to Sushi Toshi, the all-you-can-eat sushi (and other foods) Japanese restaurant. I have ordered sushi rolls, nagiri, sashimi, maki and a temaki (cone). I ordres an assortment of them - red snapper, tuna and salmon for the sushi, California and Alberta rolls, and tempura shrimp cone. This time around I ordered the beef tataki, stir fried udon with chicken, miso soup and the 6 oz steak (for this one, a hot stone is brought to your table and you sear the steak on it; sauce are also available for this dish). I had green tea to drink and had green tea ice cream for desert. Service was very good and rapid, and very attentive and polite. In all my years of eating sushi, I've never went to an AYCE sushi place until now. So this was my first AYCE experience here. And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. My nephew recommended this place for the variety, price point, and freshness of the sushi. I live in Vancouver and we are spoiled here with endless sushi that's FRESH. Having said that, this place was good! I would especially like to call out the Negitoro roll which was soooo soft, melt in your mouth, good!! It was also a bigger roll than the typical makis. Note that you have to pay extra for this but it's sooo worth it! The hot stone/plate was just ok. While it may be novel to an AYCES place, the hot stone didn't stay hot long enough IMO. We had a few on our table as we had several adults dining, so we were able to cook all of our meats, but be mindful of this when you go. We went during the holidays and we had a big party, but this place seems to be packed often so make reservations. It is a very nice place! The staff is very nice, kind and helpful. The price was ok and the quality of the food was pretty good. Portions are small compare to other places. Sashimis were nice and small cut and fresh! I did not like the rolls as much as other things. They looked and tasted the same. The place was heavily packed and a huge line up outside! I checked out Sushi Toshi after hearing all the hype about it. First of all, I made sure I came early as I heard the wait could be up to an hour, especially after ~6PM. For all-you-can-eat (AYCE), they offered really good service. The food was pretty good. I tried most of the items on their AYCE menu. The ones that stood out the most to me were the Hot Stone feature (The steak was quite good), Salmon Sashimi (the other sashimi were okay), Shrimp tempura, Beef Short Rib, Beef Tataki, Grilled Pork Belly, and Teriyaki Basa. Note that they have a 30 piece sashimi limit. Their cooked food selection was good and better than their sashimi. The experience was pretty good when factoring in the price as it's quite expensive...Overall, I'd give them 8.5/10 for their service and cooked food. read more

I have heard about this place from a few people, so I starved myself and went to enjoy the ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI! I must say it's pretty cute inside, and it was BUSY. Even with how busy it was, they did very well getting food out. I wouldn't say it was the best sushi I had, but it was pretty good quality for being all you can eat. It was fairly loud inside, but it was just crowded with people having dinner conversations and is not meant to be a quiet, romantic setting. I judge an AYCE sushi restaurant by their sashimi and this restaurant's is reliably good. For AYCE, you can't really go wrong with Sushi Toshi, where the hot sake flows as easily as the countless (ok, 30 per person) pieces of sashimi, and where you might end up smelling like a hot lava rock (and the meat grilled on it) by the time you leave. Personal plus points: they have a gluten free menu, the only AYCE sushi place I've ever seen having a separate menu; it's reasonably priced for what you get ($41-43 per person), considering I can easily spend upwards of $60-70 myself at a normal sushi restaurant; and it's on the northside, which has historically been bereft of good sushi restaurants. Some minor downsides that don't really bother me that much but might irritate pickier diners: it gets very busy and the tables are set quite tightly together; the room gets smoky when a lot of lava rocks are ordered; the service can be patchy but food will still constantly come to your table at differing intervals. We made reservations ahead of time (as was recommended to us to do) we were seated at our table immediately upon arrival. The menu and method was explained to us and we marked down what we wanted to eat on our piece of paper. There are a ton of options here and the price is pretty good for the amount of food you can order, all you can eat! 30 pieces of salmon sashimi is the limit for each person. Plus you also get 2 cuts of steak per person as well. Those two items alone are already worth the dollar amount we paid for this meal. You must definitely make a reservation or end up in a big line wishing you did. The Service is impeccable with super friendly staff. We went with an entourage of 7 and stuffed ourselves silly. The food came so fast we really didn't have time to think. Maybe it's better to order half your food and eat and order the other half. I saw a couple pace themselves and it seemed much more enjoyable than our style of "seek and destroy" the food presented. Anyways it was a very fun and enjoyable evening. Came to Sushi Toshi for a 3 generation girls night out - Grams, Ma, and kiddo. Be forewarned - it's $$$ at $100 for a senior, adult, and kiddo on a Friday night. First off, I LOVE that they have a colour menu with pics to correlate with your ordering sheet. This is phenomenal for newbies to AYCE sushi as well as lucky kiddos. I also liked that the portions were small! I greatly dislike it when AYCE sushi joints give you larger portions or 6 rolls to an order. Another bonus - pop is included here in your AYCE price. After reading fellow Yelpers' reviews we stuck to steak for the self grilling portion which my kiddo loved! The sauces that accompany the meats were fabulous and great to dip with any of the AYCE options. Food was quick, hot, and prepared perfectly 99% of the time. From poke bowls to tempura to sashimi to seaweed salad, they've got it all! I really appreciate that the sides like kimchi and seaweed are small. You can easily order a second or third but aren't stuck with a big bowl if no one else st your table wants any. The tempura was a big hit with my kiddo but at $23 for a strip of steak and a few pieces of tempura, I don't think I'll be bringing her back here anytime soon. She didn't care for the won ton soup here - had an unusual base and I appreciated that we weren't charged for her not liking it - frankly none of us did. Our friends asked us to join them at Sushi Toshi this evening. We had heard of the place, but had never been there. The place was very busy. Once we learned how to use the order sheets, we ordered food. Our table was a table of six (three couples). Each couple fills in checkboxes on an "order sheet". The server said "oh, I'll just combine these and bring things all at once. That told me they are not as organized as they should be. We all said "we won't know what is arriving as we're new". However, things started coming, we tried to make sure they went to the correct people. Eventually, about 30% of the things didn't arrive. The server (who seemed like some sort of management) said "oh, just add the missing things to the new order you're making". We did, and you guessed it - several things also were missing. We pointed out that they were, and she seemed somewhat exasperated. The overall tone, was people running around like chicken with their heads cut off. Eventually she got the final items, and then said "once you're done, I need this table if we could close the bill shortly. Kicking us out really? The menu says "limit of 1.5 hours" and we'd been there longer than that - but that was because it took that long for them to just get us all our food. THEN they had the gall to present a bill with 18% tip already added - and not "skippable". Probably wise, because if you could skip it, we would have. Some food was delicious, some like "mango shrimp" was over cooked. We noticed that they seem to share a kitchen with the restaurant right beside them - Beijing Beijing. I wonder if that helps contribute to the problem? Vs having your own specialized kitchen? All in all, I just can't imagine going there again. This is a great place for AYCE sushi and japanese food. The quality of the food is worth the price. I will pay $40 for everything that i had and that included drinks too. Raw fish was fresh. Cooked items were good. I liked everything i ordered (except for the stir fry udon which was way too salty). They also were not cheap on the ingredients. Food and drinks refills came out quickly. Staff was superb and friendly and service was excellent. The only thing my party was a little unhappy about was the wait time. We did the AYCE option and honestly it was the best way to go. We also learned 2 rolls was double so be careful when ordering LOL I loved that the menu had pictures and that my kids got to try new things. We loved the mango rolls, grill stone steak and shrimp, kim chi, teriyaki meat, grilled mushrooms and so much more. Big menu, unlimited food, and at a decent price. $44/person is just above average for sushi in Edmonton. So why not eat buffet and get your money's worth?!? There are a few items that have volume limits so everyone should order the max. It's 30 pieces of Sashimi per person and the pieces are quite small so everyone can finish this. I'd say the 30 pieces is equivalent to about 12-15 pieces at a normal sushi restaurant. But it's fresh and there's a decent selection. The other limited item is the hot stone BBQ which each person is allowed just one order but extra orders are only $5. I got the steak which has about 8-10 oz of decently marbled steak. If I had to guess I'd say it was from the top sirloin butt. Make sure that the stone they bring you is really hot so you get a good sear on the meat. The prawn hot stone comes with 4 seasoned prawns but I feel like the steak is better value. The chop chop nigiri is limited to one order per person but the chop chop roll (no limit) uses the same ingredients but there's more rice and less scallops. This place is busy! They ask that you keep the hallways clear because servers are running around with food, hot stones, and empty plates. The servers are generally helpful and do their best to remember your requests. Pro tip, take a picture of your order card because it's easy to forget what you ordered and know what other dishes are coming. Disappointing. I tried sushi toshi last weekend after learning that they recently opened up at the old manila bay location and was hopeful but I found almost everything very lacking. The salmon sashimi was alright but the tuna sashimi was terrible. The tuna pieces did not taste like tuna and had been frozen and thawed so many times that they disintegrated from being picked up with chopsticks. Additionally both the tuna and "red snapper" (looked suspiciously like butter fish) were mushy and seemed off. Rolls and Maki are okay but despite small portions, the rice to filling ratio was high and there was limited options. Not the greatest selection either. Kitchen food items were generally better, though the first order they sent tiny portions in an attempt to get you to over order on the second order where they send out regular portions. Pork belly was mediocre, not tender but crunchy. Mango shrimp has very little taste and no mangos or canned peach. Teriyaki basa and beef, beef ribs and beef tataki were good. Hot stone beef steak was the high light of the meal however you are limited to 1 free protein with each additional one $5 on top of 35$ buffet price tag. Other issues I had were a waitress asking us if we were done our meal when we were waiting for our order & dried wasabi on plates that have been sitting for a day. This place in my opinion is the go to sushi place for all you can eat sushi in Edmonton, they have a good selection of sushi as well as a large cooked menu for anyone that isn't into raw fish, and there is a nice selection of items for people who don't like fish, A nice thing as well is the steak you cook on a hot stone that is included in the all you can eat sushi, usually split one with the girl friend as there are so many things to eat on the menu. We went shortly after it had re-opened its dining room after being closed for covid and were excited to be able to grab a table - it was still busy and with fewer tables available, we only waited a few minutes. We both ordered the steak for the hot stone part and the first thing we noticed that instead of a raw full steak being brought out for us to grill ourselves, the meat was cut into strips and seared on the outside. Not fully cooked, just enough to not be red anymore. After they put it down on the table we asked about the change and the server shrugged and said "they must be doing something different" We grilled the meat on the stone and after the first piece we both stopped eating - the meat was bad. Not just bad as in poor quality, the meat was actually rancid. We flagged the server back down to tell him and he sort of laughed and said, "I thought it wasn't right" and took it away. He didn't offer us anything new - he went and talked to an older gentleman (maybe a manager? owner?) and when he came back he said we could upgrade our free ice cream to the sesame ice cream for free (that would have cost us $1 each - so they offered us $2 for serving us bad meat). We decided to leave and asked for the bill. While waiting, we saw the older man our server talked to, go to the back and then the people in the kitchen started staring/glaring out the window at us. It was all very uncomfortable. We paid (full price) and left feeling sick, uncomfortable at everything and mad that we just paid $90 ish. Ridiculous wait time feels like management disregards other customers that just came in. They let people hang out inside the restaurant for so long just chit chatting. Waiters do not come by and ask if you need anything. (Which probably the reason why customers hangs out just chit chatting when they're done eating thus the ridiculous wait time) They don't make a decent wait list. We were told we were in the waitlist just to find out an hour later that we weren't there. (And we didn't miss it fyi) We Asked to be listed again to give it a try and waited for 2 hrs. Just to see what the hype is all about. Food is nothing special small and thin pieces of sashimis and sushi rolls. I enjoyed our meal and there was plenty to choose from, but it was a hundred bucks for 1 adult, 1 senior, and an 11 year old who ate very little, so not a place we'd frequent frequently. As my dining partner pointed out, you don't even get to take home leftovers for that price :-). We went on a Friday night and it was very busy and VERY loud, as the room is small and tables are close by. Service was prompt and all the food was hot (or cold, as need be) and good. I appreciated that the fried foods were crispy and not greasy. It's also nice that the dishes are marked one or two pieces each, so you have less chance of not finishing it and being penalized. We've been to other places where the serving may be 4 to 6 pieces and if you don't like it/finish it, you essentially end up paying twice for it. With so much to choose from, it's much better to "sample" a small serving and then re-order whatever you liked best. First time here but have eaten at every ayce sushi place in Edmonton in the last 10 years. It's definitely hard to get good quality sushi in Edmonton, but this place is great. The sushi is very well made with very fresh fish, the Service is fantastic, the food comes out very quickly, pop is included, the hot stone is a nice touch for cooking meats right at your table. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the ventilation. When you get lots of tables cooking on the hot stones it gets very smokey. But other than that it's really good. read more

We were warned that if we left too much food you'd be charged & that dishes were 1 piece each item unless otherwise marked (ex rolls are marked as 2 pieces per order). 2h seating max. Pop & vanilla ice cream are included. Sashimi (Max 30 pieces per adult) - fresh but small. Sushi (rolls, cones, etc) - pretty good, fresh. Hot stone (max 1 per adult) - we tried pork belly with ginger sauce, the concept was fun but the pork belly was rubbery/chewy and had no flavour. Kitchen - we ordered 10 beef sashimi as it was supposed to be 1 piece per order according to the server, she brought us 10 dishes of beef sashimi with about 5 pieces of sashimi each - while this might not have been the amount we expected it wouldn't have been problematic except that the sauce tasted like heavily peppered vinegar. Our sashimi loving kids wouldn't eat it & frankly we didn't want to either. This was omitted from our bill as we explained that we were told it was 1 piece per order unless otherwise stated on the ordering form. The grilled eggplant & zucchini were good. Deep fry - our kids enjoyed the tempura & chicken kaarage (ask for it without spice sprinkled on top if you / the kids don't like spice). I came here for the first time a couple days ago. Service was friendly and the food was great. I really enjoyed the cones and grilled foods. Sashimi pieces were quite small and thin but you are allowed 30 pieces per person. If you love chop chop (scallop) nigiri they do only allow 2 pcs per person. They do have a chop chop roll though. Our server was really friendly and attentive. However there is a 2 hour limit and near the end of our dinner we did feel quite rushed. Our server asked us if we wanted Ice cream before we were finished our food. Also he did bring our bill and the machine when we hadn't finished our dessert yet. Not my favourite japanese restau. It doesn't taste as authentic but it's pretty good for the price!
