Fantastic meal! We sat at the bar, enjoyed a wonderful bottle of sake with a little bit of every section off the menu. Everything is simple, luxurious, and full of flavour. I can't wait to come back.

I love the concept at this teeny-tiny Japanese restaurant because it feels timely. It's simple and clean. They have a major focus on sustainability (as evidenced by their partnership with Ocean Wise). If you're used to a Japanese dining experience that is full of bells and whistles and deep fried foods, Kobachi is not the place for you. Expect straight forward, locally-sourced, conscious food. This is what we should all be moving toward, after all. Named Best New Restaurant on CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 list, I was excited to head out to Sherwood Park on a Saturday night to experience a fresh new level of Japanese cuisine. You'll find the restaurant in a modern area full of glass-sided buildings. Kobachi's bee logo catches the eye and assures that you have found the right place. Inside, you are met with a very, very small room. I counted 14 seats. Because of this, reservations are highly recommended - there won't be any alternate options for seating if they're full (which they are, consistently). The kitchen is open and right there in the space with you, the friendly staff busily working away. There is one long communal table that they separate with dividers for different groups and a few counter seats in front of the window. I literally cannot stress how small this place is. The decor is clean and simple just like the food. I really enjoyed the ukiyoe-style art on the walls. I ordered a Sugarcane Cola (Cola syrup with Kobachi's twist added to it - $4.75) because it sounded unique and casual. Plus I'm a big fan of more natural colas. It definitely looked like a classic cola except the taste was anything but. Less sugary and fake, this cola had a distinct citrus flavour to it. My guess is that there's a bit of yuzu in there and that's what they're talking about when they say that there's a "twist" added. This drink was refreshing and paired well with the food. Of course there is also a whole array of sake, shochu, and beer available as well. They even offer a sake flight that sounds like a lot of fun. Our server told us all about the daily specials (there were quite a few) and brought us pre-poured dishes of soy sauce. The menu comes on a clipboard with a dry erase marker so that you can mark down everything that you want. We went about ordering a selection of dishes that would hopefully showcase a nice example of everything that Kobachi has to offer. The first to arrive was the Sashimi Sanshu (3 types of fish sashimi of your choice - $25.00) in which you are served 9 pieces. The sashimi is one of the most popular items on the menu probably because it's the purest way to taste their beautifully sustainable fish. With eight fish to choose from, we opted for Tuna, Salmon, and Aburi Cured Mackerel. These were certainly exceptional cuts, generous in portion size. In fact, we noticed little extra pieces, likely scraps that they were not letting go to waste. We were more than happy to eat them! I loved the soft, melt-in-my-mouth tuna. But my forever favourite is mackerel. It's so rich and buttery and the flame-seared preparation enhanced the flavour a lot. Very clean, this was my favourite dish overall just because it encapsulates what Kobachi is all about on one plate. I'd heard good things about the Hotate Butter (Sustainable scallops, mushrooms, onion, butter and flavoured soy sauce - $13.00) and wanted to give it a try. "Hotate" means scallop! This dish was pretty small, as were the scallops themselves, but there were quite a few of them. Simple ingredients, I liked the combination of mushrooms and onion. I would have liked a more obvious use of butter since it seemed like it was supposed to be a key component. The scallops themselves were delightful meaty bites and were cooked perfectly. Super tender, moist, and not at all overdone. The next little plate that I'd also heard about is the Parsnip Kimpira (Parsnip and carrot sauteed with sesame oil and chili flake - $6.00). For a small dish this one packed a lot of flavour. Tangled ribbons of parsnip and carrot were bathed in a delicious sesame oil. There weren't many ingredients used but so much was accomplished with so little. I loved the use of parsnip - a vegetable that feels incredibly seasonal at the moment and also rarely served. This was a great way to add some veg to the table. I was excited to try the Sushi Combo (Tuna garlic ponzu, tuna miso, salmon, sable or feature, scallop, and shrimp mayo - $18.00) because this is another pretty famous and popular dish on the menu. Again showcasing beautiful fish from the sea, I liked that they used this opportunity to bring in some interesting flavours. The two tuna pieces were probably my favourite just because I enjoyed the different ingredients used, making them unique. The shrimp mayo reminded me of a chop chop roll - very creamy and delicious. Overall, each piece of sushi was nicely composed and tasted very fresh. It's just good sushi, which is entirely the point. One item that I eagerly an

Reservations highly recommended, they only have 12 seats.

Another memorable meal that I'm still thinking about a week later. Come here for an intentional meal - one to savour and enjoy casually but deeply. There is no wastage/fillers here, every ingredient used has a purpose to bring out or enhance the dish. You've seen everyone rave about their sushi (rightly so, it's amazing here) - but I urge you to also look deeper on their small menu and try their other dishes and weekly specials. The beef tataki, the silky soft tofu, perfectly charred brussel sprouts and the current special ika fry with housemade kimchi mayo (omg I want that sold by the bottle!!) just to name a few. They also currently have a Miso Gyudon which is miso stewed beef over rice with a poached egg that feels like getting a hug from mom, it is so comforting. I looooved it so much, and think it's a beautiful, hearty dish that's perfect as the weather cools. Pair it all with a sake flight and a yuzu-nade and it's perfect. (Save room for dessert, that pudding is killer!) This tiny spot only seats 12, so definitely book reservations before coming.

Sushi I love sushi and there are many amazing Japanese restaurants in Edmonton. Most of you know it already, but this place isn't in Edmonton, but is located in Sherwood Park, @kobachi_restaurant is hands down my favourite place for sushi! They are a small mom and pop shop with very limited seatings that focus on a small menu to bring you the best and freshest sushi possible. Seats fill up fast, so call to make reservations, or call in advance, place an order, pick it up and get it to go like I did. Something about their sushi that just looks so simple, so clean and taste so good and fresh. I typically order sushi for myself and always worry I will order too much, but as soon as I'm done eating and with regret, I wish I should have ordered more. Lol.

After coming back from my Japan trip last fall, I never expected to taste Japan level sushi here in Edmonton until now. Kobachi's quality and freshness of sushi is mind blowing good. In my opinion, it's probably serves the freshest sushi in Edmonton. However since Edmonton is landlocked, food here is unfortunately quite pricey as well. The sushi here is simple nigiri or maki sushi so don't expect extravegent rolls. I was surprised at how big the portion size of the fish were on the nigiri because usually other Japanese restaurants in Edmonton provide a thinner portion. All the nigiri sushi I had that night were so juicy and fresh. I especially liked the scallop becuase it melted in my mouth as I took a bite. I also ordered salmon salmon sashimi and it was thick and delicious as well. Kobachi also has a daily specials board that's not part of their main menu. My boyfriend and I shared the Wagyu Curry Udon off it. It was flavorful and the wagyu was cooked pleasing to the tastebuds. Since I shared the dish, the curry wasn't too heavy but I feel like one person can still finish the dish without it being too heavy. The restaurant is a bit small so there aren't many seats. I would recommend making a reservation if you're going with a big group. Service was friendly and welcoming. Between two people, we spent around $42 per person. We didn't leave hungry but we didn't leave super full either. It's definitely worth a place to visit but prepare to spend a bit more for the fresh quality you get.

Purest sashimi and sushi in the Edmonton area. I have not tasted such melt in your mouth sashimi since I was in Japan. Fresh and you can taste the ocean. Not much to look like like on the inside or outside but clean. I hope they do expand because three tables don't do well in January when you want to eat. There are three that fit two a piece and a bit of a bar. Not a huge menu but enough to please sushi and non sushi lovers alike. my non sushi friend ordered the beef bento box while i did the shashimi bento box. Everything was flavourful. Loved the fresh salad with dressing. We enjoyed the veggies that came with bento. My girlfriend enjoyed her beef, but the sashimi was amazing. I can't stress how fresh it was. I don't think i can eat anywhere else after I ate here. I would like to try some rolls for take out. For the quality of food, it is so worth the money.

Without a doubt the best sushi you'll have in the Edmonton area. I'll keep coming back until they prove me wrong, and even should that happen... I'ma keep coming. Each bite was so perfect! So fresh! It felt like such a treat and delicacy to be eating takeout from here, not something I've felt while eating any other takeout sushi. My boyfriend and I each got a sushi combo (thumbs up for placing both orders in a container together! eco friendly vibes) and shared an order of the real crab California rolls, as well as the Fuji apple creme brûlée and the matcha white chocolate brownies, and washed it all down with their yuzu-nade. I recommend all of it! I wish I could post a more in-depth and descriptive review, but saying that everything was delicious and pretty much perfect will have to suffice!

    Sushi Combo

I always count down the days for another meal at Kobachi. Everything is so fresh and delicious! The chefs really take pride in what they do and want to provide the best experience for their customers. It is more expensive but I'll gladly pay more for treating myself to the best sushi in the city! I just had Kobachi and I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

This was 1 of 4 Miso mayo stuffed mushroom caps, broiled and topped with micro greens. YUM!

Superb! From the handmade 'yuzu-nade' a yuzu lemonade to the mushroom special - mushroom caps stuffed with a miso cream , broiled and topped with micro greens. Wow! My maki were also delish! Staff was super pleasant, efficient and thoughtful. Great vibes.

Sherwood Park is so lucky right now. They have the best Mexican food and now the best Japanese food of all time.   Kobachi has been open for a couple months now and it's serving up top tier sushi. Aside from the sushi they are named after their small bowls "bachi" that are sure to impress. They have something for everyone in these bowls from curried cashew nuts to hotate butter scallops. If the small appetizer bowls ain't filling you up then there are "oobachi" the bigger bowls that include chirashi donburi and a wagyu steak donburi. I was picking some squid and octopus from my sister's chirashi bowl and i'd have to say it is the best tasting here at kobachi. This leads me to my favorite, the sushi. It's probably the closest thing to Japan you can get in the Edmonton area. Each piece comes with a little dab of wasabi underneath the fish and are glazed with some soy. It looks great and tastes even better. After trying most of the sushi the only one i'd avoid is the red tuna, idk what happened there but it's the only average thing I ate here. Regardless, the other tunas here are great, the aburri salmon, the scallops and also the uni if it's available. There are specials everyday so lookout for some of that exclusive fish yo. On my second visit here I ventured into some dessert, and it was also insanely good. That matcha white chocolate brownie is so good I want to share my last name with it. I also forgot to mention the rolls, try the real crab California rolls and see why every other sushi place doesn't compare. Located near Festival Place in Sherwood Park, Kobachi is worth the drive. Service here was decent the first visit but clumsy on my second visit. Maybe it was training day but who knows.  Make a reso if your party is over 4 as there's only one large table and bar/window seating. There is also free parking underground for 2 hours. Sal says: Just Eat It (4.5/5) @ruejb says: Sushi so tasty, couldn't even take a photo. Perfect excample of the saying: Big things come in small packages.

Tried once again for date night! Fantastic AGAIN!!!!! Really good service too. 100% our go to sushi place!

So this review is a bit late but thought I should still write it as my Dad (who only ever really…read moreenjoys eating steak and potatoes or sometimes a pizza) thought this was a good enough restaurant to return to. So what made it that great that my dad would give it such a high review? First, if you've never seen an advertisement for this place, prepare yourself for ongoing talking and some well rehearsed comedy from the chefs. There literally is a live cooking show being done with your meals right in front of you. This combination of humour and meal prep was a big hit for my family (the 5 of us were constantly commenting on how things were being cooked, what was new to us and encouraging the ongoing trials of the fork toss plus the salt and pepper tossing trick by the chef). Second, it might be a Japanese place but they have steak! You may have guessed with my intro but that was an important decision factor in choosing a restaurant. We wanted a different place for the early Christmas family gathering but something everyone could enjoy. Third, they're very diligent about respecting allergies. My sister-in-law gets very ill with her allergies. So it's nice not having to worry. They set her food specifically on one area of the grill and no other food was ever placed there. Hers was never combined with the rest of ours either. They also had a different soup for her to enjoy and did a vinaigrette on her salad instead of the house dressing. The food itself is a decent price for a fine dining experience and what you get with the dinner. There's soup, salad, grilled shrimp, grilled veggies and whatever you choose as your main. All with great flavour and you get two different dipping sauces - one being better for meat and other with vegetables. Obviously if you select the options of more seafood to accompany the main piece of the meal, the price is more expensive. We all kept it pretty simple. Two with shrimp dinners, two with New York steaks and one with teriyaki beef. We were all quite happy with our portions and if you feel you need extra rice, they will bring more out. If you have saved a bit of room, there's lots of dessert options too but that comes with an additional price. I really was quite happy with that large selection of mocktails to try but for those that want it, there's a large selection of mixed alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, etc. The place is accessible from the outside doors to the grill tables and even though my brother struggles to see in dim lighting, there's enough random lighting that we found a well lit spot at the table for him. I liked that I didn't have to watch for random levels or steps. There are a few booths throughout the restaurant for those that maybe want a more secluded meal but there's no grills for those spots. So after such a glowing review, why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well as I had booked ahead of time and specifically gave a number of 5 people for the reservation, it would have been nice to know we would not have anything started to be cooked, nor our meal order taken until they fill the rest of the table around the grill. If I had that information, I could have easily invited a couple of friends to join. However as this came to us as surprise, it meant even though we didn't know who was joining us, we were forced to awkwardly wait over 15 min to have them arrive and then start giving our order when they were ready. At least some of the drinks had made it out by then but the place was starting to fill up so the noise level was increasing. Luckily for us my mom randomly know the couple that was sat at our grill table but there were parts of the dinner you could tell they would have enjoyed having their own time as a couple (as I'm quite sure they weren't informed they'd be part of a bigger table being that they were surprised that my mom thanked them for arriving on time so we can now order when they are ready). It would have also been a different experience for my family too without the combined table situation. I had to remind the chef who's steak was being prepared due to the over eager guy wanting a well done steak the same time as a medium rare... Things eventually got served to everyone but only because I spoke up, I was able to get near to what I had requested (glad that my dad at least got his medium rare) even though everyone had reconfirmed orders when the chef was placing the meat on the grill. Lastly, the noise in the restaurant was so high at the end of our meal that not only did my dad stop trying to have a conversation but so did the rest of us. So instead of savouring dessert, I ate it quickly as all I wanted was to pay the bill fast and just leave the noise. I've gone once before on a week night back in April and it was more manageable for noise level. This being due to not all grills were full nor was the restaurant as full.

I didn't even know Sherwood Park has a Japanese Village and I hadn't been to one in about 15 years. We had 14 in our group but this wasn't an issue as we were all able to all sit around two grills with two grill cooks. Our server did a great job of taking our drink orders, filling up our water glasses and making sure we were happy. I personally started with a pint of their house beer and the Tuna Sashimi. Both were tasty. For my main course I had Teppan - Yaki Dinner (Teriyaki Chicken) It came with soup, salad and green tea. Our grill cook was a nice young man who brought a smile to our face and kept us chuckling. For the value, I was happy with my meal, the price I payed and the fun interacting with our cook. I would definitely go back with a group of friends.

I've went there plenty of times and have always been disappointed. Either portions were small, food wasn't fresh or the dishes were drenched in sauce to the point I couldn't taste the fish. On my visit on a Thursday. I wanted to try their Thursday special (salmon or beef tataki for $12). I was refused bc it was 330pm and it wasn't until after 4pm. There was no indication on websites or menu this was not a daily special but rather just an evening special on thursdays. Pretty misleading. So I opted to try their sushi tacos since I love them from taco nori in vancouver and have been hunting for them here in edmonton area. I ordered three of them. The spicy salmon, the rock crab and the Joe's special. I was ordering from the taco menu and was specifically mentioned that I just wanted tacos. And for whatever reason the waitress bought me out a Joe's special roll which is double the price of what I actually ordered. I refused the bait and switch and requested I get what I actually ordered. I wasn't too happy at this point and just wanted to leave. But to top it off. Within 20 min of eating I had serious food poisoning which really made me question how fresh everything actually was. It tasted great. But handling or storage or something was off to make me get food poisoning and that happens pretty rarely to me. The food was decent and I actually loved the Joe's special taco because it tasted amazing. But km not entirely sure I would want to come back because of bait and switch scheme going on.
