Lobster king roll, dragon eye roll, and shrimp tempura

This is my second time dining in at Mikado, it's a Japanese and western fusion restaurant. But I still enjoyed the food, the rolls tasted great and it definitely has nice presentation hence making it a pleasant dining experience for me and my friends. The waitress was friendly and came by to check on us. The restaurant has good lighting, I can still see my food while not too bright. The environment is clean and the decoration is classy.

This restaurant is by far the closest you could get to japan here in Edmonton. They have a bar where you could see your food being prepared, it would've been better if the chef will just pass the food to you, but instead the food is still served by the servers.

For a long time, I loved Japanese food, but never had the chance to indulge until fast food chains such as Tokyo Express and Edo made it easier for me to enjoy. My close Japanese friend educated me that those described are the equivalent of McDonalds of their cuisine. Then came my affair with Japanese village, a quantum leap from Edo, and far more engaging than Tokyo Express. I stumbled on this delight by circumstances of need, where I was running out time to find a suitable venue for Mother's Day. When the opportunity came up to make reservations, I jumped on the opportunity inviting my folks and brother. Upon arrival, we were given a lovely private room that was in the Japanese style equipped with the translucent sliding doors to give us privacy but so to give us some semblance of ambience. My brother and I had a Sapporo beer with some spring rolls to get us started, but my wife stole my selection of Entree to order the Beef Yakiniku, beautifully cut beef slices on a bed of rice and vegatables. Forbidden to make the same selection, I was stifled into making a selection from the Bento options and chose the Beef Robata Bento. It was a home run!!! Teriyaki Salmon, Beef Slices, Fireball Shrimp/Chicken on skewers with sesame sauce and rice on the side(order more rice on the side.). Everything was succulent and mouthwatering. Only critique was that the miso soup was pedestrian, and the raw Edame peas was flavourless, plastic in its texture, and difficult to eat to which I thought it was a display food. The service was excellent considering that she had to put up with needy customers and their toddler LOL. Great mother day event!!!!

Summary: average to good western style Japanese food, bad amateur service, cold loud environment. Probably best to come for lunch. Don't bring a large group in, the gratuity is gratuitous given they can't serve their way out of a bento box. After talking our meat-and-potatoes caucasian relatives from going to Sumo Sumo (ugh), they settled on the Mikado. Food is OK, a few good grilled items (try the BBQ squid and the Norwegian mackerel), some Japanesey items (sashimi, nigiri, gunkan) but otherwise quite western with lots of sauce and tempura. I'm astonished at the quantity of sauce served with the dishes, why so much? The roll selection has decreased from my last visit, seems smaller and less interesting than an equivalent restaurant like Kyoto. The specials can be fun, had the yomogi daifuku, nice treat for $5 though the mochi outside tasted like it had been frozen, had a mild yomogi flavour. As other have noted, the bento boxes have become below average, they used to be quite good. Also disappointing is the size of the sashimi and the nigiri, I couldn't believe how small the fish servings were, especially at $3.50 a pop for nigiri. Smallest unagi I've ever seen. Dragon eyes were good, better be for a "specialty" item and $13 for 6 pieces. Service was woeful this last time, especially given the 15% gratuity for groups of 8 or more. Our group even had an early booking, 5 p.m., it wasn't busy yet and the server still screwed up the order so many times. Slow service, items forgotten, and at least half the dishes delivered to the wrong person. Our mackerel took over an hour to deliver to the table, wtf. My spouse wanted to give a 1 star review based on the service alone, he was hangry and ready to bail. Our server was like a deer in the headlights. We would have ordered more food if the service wasn't so slow. Then we got two bills for three sets of people, and even these were screwed up (how we got billed for the kids' items when they sat at the opposite end of the table...). We just ended up exchanging cash later instead of trying to deal with the clueless server. Used to love the Mikado but man, if you're going out with peeps who don't need western-style food to eat at a Japanese restaurant, go elsewhere. I'll only come here for lunch on the off chance that I want to torture myself shopping at South Edmonton Common. Cuz really, if you don't live in the deep southside, why would you come here?

Sigh ... another restaurant that is all appearance and no substance. Mikado is like the "hot guy at the party" of Japanese restaurants in Edmonton -- it looks beautiful and enticing on the outside, but then I discover there's not much underneath the surface. Seriously though, the restaurant is impeccably designed and decorated, with its sleek black furniture and soft white lamps. It's got a very modern Zen feel. They score big points for looks, but the food is another story. Dishes are presented exquisitely; in fact, I've never seen sushi presented to me so nicely. But the quality of the food is definitely a let-down after they build you up with the aesthetics. It's all bland; there's no real flavour at all, and it doesn't seem that fresh. After taunting me with its incredibly good looks all throughout dinner -- and making me argue with myself whether the quality of the food really does matter -- Mikado sticks me with the bill, and of course, it's ridiculously high. I vow to never get sucked in by a restaurant like this one again, but of course, I will. Another one bites the dust.

I came here for lunch on Friday (today) with my sister at 11:45am. We were one of the first customers to be there. Our server was great, very friendly and helpful. She noted to us that the Uni (my favorite), red tuna, and a few other fish is fresh today. First thing we ordered were 4 Uni's then full order of red tuna and a big green salad each. We had tea for a beverage because I have to get back to work later, otherwise I would have gotten Hana Sake. ..Yum. .. Our food came and omg wow... It's true when they say you eat with your eyes first. The beautiful bright red of the Tuna Sashimi and the fresh look of the Uni! Our Salads looked amazing as well. The Red Tuna was Crisp and had a fresh Bite, the Uni was buttery and flavourful. The Uni was sooo good we ordered another 4 pieces. We wanted to try the difference between the regular Tuna Sashimi and the Red Tuna so we ordered a full order of the regular Tuna. There is a big difference. The Red Tuna is by far greater than the average Tuna. The Regular Tuna is creamier but lacks that extra omphf of flavor. I am extremely impressed with the service and quality of food here today! I live close to this Mikado location so I will be back definitely!

What's a girl supposed to do when she's starving at around 2 PM after a very hard afternoon of shopping at South Edmonton Common? The obvious choice for me was Mikado, but I don't know if it will be so obvious in future. Even at 2 PM, the place had a "fifteen minute" wait for our table of three. The problem wasn't that Mikado was full, they were just short staffed and couldn't seat anyone else. Fifteen minute was actually closer to thirty, but eventually we grabbed a table. It took another ten minutes for a waiter to come over, but once he did he was quite attentive. Michael J, Rory T and I were all starving so we gave him our orders immediately and the food came out pretty quickly. I really like the menu here, actually. An awesome selection of bentos, plates and rolls. Separate lunch menu means smaller plates, which means smaller pricetag. I dig. My meat-a-licious bento was quite tasty, although three small pieces of chicken left me unimpressed. Still, the beef was a saucy highlight and the tempura was a crunch delight. Usually this is the part where I would say, "Don't come during peak hours!" But I'm not sure that would even help. If you're looking to chow down locally, check it out. If you'd rather get a table right away, skip it.

One of my favorite restaurants in the southside sushi battle has succumbed to suckyness. What was once , one of the best restaurants for Japanese in the city has just mired itself itself into a swamp of mediocrity. I booked a reservation here for my birthday and we got it no problem. Hurray! For special events restaurants that don't RSVP are automatically disqualified as choices. The food was actually quite good, small portions, but good. One of my guests actually said "I ordered the large sashimi ?" and the response... "that is the LARGE sashimi" eek. I know if I wanted quantity over quality I could go to one of the all you can eat places. The problem with Mikado is that the quality of the wait staff doesn't match the quality of the food. During dinner, our plates over 2 hrs were only cleared once. At a certain point we couldn't see over the plates to the other side of the table. Not kidding. Stacking used sushi plates all over the boat didn't make the plates any cleaner. When the final bill came, the waitress made a face when we explained we were going to split the main bill and to have any extras as side bills (there were a few of my guests that ordered extras and favorites) Then she didn't allow them to pay a portion of the main bill and their side bills at the same time. Uggggggg.. Redeeming point though: One of my friends tried to pay cash, then changed his mind and decided to pay credit. He left the cash on the table by accident. They actually called me and let me know, so he could go back and get his cash! I wish that Mikado had matched the quality of their food with their service, but unfortunately I can't say they did. PROS Great Sushi! Lots of free parking Cons Overpriced, Small portions Bad service You can't say Mikado is a bad restaurant which doesn't care, but you can lament the fact that it used to be much much better. Skip this legacy restaurant and try somewhere new.

Atmosphere is relaxed and minimalistic with a great chill vibe. Service is okay but I would say that all the times I have been there, the staff have not been super welcome or friendly. Our dishes came by slowly which was fine because we were visiting with friends but don't expect to fly in and out. This is the one thing they can improve on. Luckily the food makes up for it. The standout was the black cod with the miso marinade and the amazing selction of the Japonais Premium Select. A HUGE amount of rolls, sushi and sashimi. Definately worth the money if you are fine with the chef doing the choosing. Everything was super fresh. The only thing I think was just average was the tempura. It was no difference than the other places I have been to. Really worth making the reservation for, just keep in mind you may need to wait.

I ordres an assortment of them - red snapper, tuna and salmon for the sushi, California and Alberta rolls, and tempura shrimp cone. And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.
