I've been to Japonais in Windermere Edmonton a few times now since they opened. Their quality seemed slightly worse than the downtown location and compared to a couple of other places in Edmonton. Namely, the sashimi cuts seemed slightly off every time (worse cut of fish, knife skill: not straight cut), dishes that have too much sauce which slightly overwhelmed the ingredients, and service was barely average (one check in on how the meal was throughout the entire dining experience on most occasions). However, they are one of the few good Japanese restaurants in Southwest Edmonton, especially around the Riverbend/Windermere area, so I'd give it 8.3/10. Items worth trying, when considering the price, include their bento and short ribs.

This place is a 10/10 all around. My group came for a late dinner reservation. and we were seated promptly. They had a special happening for the weekend ($10 Pressed Salmon Sushi, usually $17) so each person in our group got one order. We also ordered the TNT and Love Crunch roll - but we were told that the Love Crunch might take up to 30min to prepare so we opted for the Golden Crunch instead. We also ordered the Chicken Karaage. The pressed salmon was yummy, just like pressed salmon from most other high-quality sushi places. The karaage was a decent portion for the price and was hot & crispy. I enjoyed both of the rolls we got; the Golden Crunch was nice and crispy (it had tempura bits on the outside) and the TNT had great flavour and was really saucy. For dessert, I got the matcha creme brûlée and it was probably my favourite part of the meal. The sugar on top was torched well for a pleasantly crunchy top layer, and the matcha flavour was so good. I highly recommend you try this dessert!!! Our server was the cherry on top for the experience. He gave us a rundown of the restaurant's history before we ordered, and was kind and courteous throughout our meal. The food also came pretty quick considering how much we ordered and the fact that we were warned it might take a while due to the surge of orders they had received. Overall, I would 100% recommend this spot to sushi lovers. And I'd definitely come back!

We decided to come here for lunch one day to try it out since they just recently opened and it was their grand opening week. The set up of this restaurant is very beautiful and clean inside. Definitely a good place for a fancy dinner or a celebratory date night. Our server Matt was very friendly and helpful. He remembered our order flawlessly and asked us several times if we needed anything. He let us know long to cook our wagyu to get it the way we liked it and explained all the sauces to us. We ordered their popular dishes, pressed salmon sushi, hot stone wagyu, new style roll, and tnt roll. My favourite is definitely their pressed salmon sushi but the new style roll was also delicious with the onions in yuzu sauce. It had a unique flavour. To drink we just ordered green tea which came in a beautiful cast iron tea pot. Overall, the service was excellent, the ambiance was relaxing yet upscale, and the food was fresh. The prices are a bit higher here so expect to pay more when coming for lunch. With tip, our bill came to $110. If you're looking for a fancy night out, this is a good option. The cocktail menu looked intriguing and I'd love to come back and try some next time.

If you read my review of the original Japonais Bistro downtown on Jasper this will pretty much be the same...best sushi in Edmonton and unless someone shows me better it's not even really close This new incarnation of the "bistro" downtown is absolutely incredible. The space is exactly what you would expect from a new Windermere restaurant. Sharp, instantly cool, and stunningly well put together. We started with the miso tuna taco's...omfg are they just about perfect!! Just miso marinated tuna on a tortilla chip topped with a slice of jalepeno...awesome. Then a full grilled squid with a sesame dipping sauce. Perfectly cooked. Then it was sushi time!!! We had an assortment of rolls, sashimi, and negiri...everything was absolutely lights out awesome. I would love someone to tell me where the better sushi is in Edmonton cause I don't think anyone can touch these places...presentation was exquisite as well. Service was really good considering the place was absolutely packed and I got free ice cream and a free pint of Asahi for my BDAY dinner...do yourselves the favour, if you want sushi in Edmonton Japonais Bistro either downtown or Windermere is the place period Cheers Andy

It was a very pricey place, and I found the food to be less than impressive. Despite being advertised as a Japanese restaurant, it didn't quite live up to that expectation. My bill for two people on my birthday, including two sakes, came to $280, which I believe was not worth it. The service was just okay; the waitress had a poker face initially and later became more normal. The overall environment wasn't great either. When the hot stone Wagyu arrived, as soon as we placed the beef on the hot stone, smoke started to fill the area. Additionally, the chairs were not very comfortable. The restaurant seemed to be aiming for a premium level, but it definitely didn't meet that standard. The fried chicken noodle was overly oily, and the calamari didn't resemble Japanese style but rather leaned more towards a Korean style. The good part is the sashimi we ordered the premium level was good, forgot how much it was cost think was 46? 18 pieces Fresh and delicious. Very good worth 3 stars here. The tuna tartare definitely is horrible, more like robber my money, it's just corn chips with very cheap tuna and very little on top. Forgot how much really cost think was 18? I don't plan on visiting this restaurant again for sure.

Such a great sushi spot! Apparently it was the grand opening and they had $10 pressed salmon sushi specials so my friends and I had to check it out! It was busy but we had reservations for 9:30pm. The person who served us was very polite and took the time to explain the place and also apologized in advance if service would be slower as they were still new. Sushi tasted so good, and I love sushi so I really did enjoy the rolls we got. Apart from the salmon pressed sushi, my friends and I also ordered the TNT and golden crunch, as well as chicken karaage. Overall loved the flavours for all sushi and experience was amazing as well. Service and food are definitely worth it to check out this spot especially if you're a sushi lover like me!

It was the first location before they opened up other locations...and it is by far my favourite. I go here for the classic dishes that never fail. Definately worth the money if you are fine with the chef doing the choosing. Everything was super fresh. The only thing I think was just average was the tempura. And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

So this review is a bit late but thought I should still write it as my Dad (who only ever really…read moreenjoys eating steak and potatoes or sometimes a pizza) thought this was a good enough restaurant to return to. So what made it that great that my dad would give it such a high review? First, if you've never seen an advertisement for this place, prepare yourself for ongoing talking and some well rehearsed comedy from the chefs. There literally is a live cooking show being done with your meals right in front of you. This combination of humour and meal prep was a big hit for my family (the 5 of us were constantly commenting on how things were being cooked, what was new to us and encouraging the ongoing trials of the fork toss plus the salt and pepper tossing trick by the chef). Second, it might be a Japanese place but they have steak! You may have guessed with my intro but that was an important decision factor in choosing a restaurant. We wanted a different place for the early Christmas family gathering but something everyone could enjoy. Third, they're very diligent about respecting allergies. My sister-in-law gets very ill with her allergies. So it's nice not having to worry. They set her food specifically on one area of the grill and no other food was ever placed there. Hers was never combined with the rest of ours either. They also had a different soup for her to enjoy and did a vinaigrette on her salad instead of the house dressing. The food itself is a decent price for a fine dining experience and what you get with the dinner. There's soup, salad, grilled shrimp, grilled veggies and whatever you choose as your main. All with great flavour and you get two different dipping sauces - one being better for meat and other with vegetables. Obviously if you select the options of more seafood to accompany the main piece of the meal, the price is more expensive. We all kept it pretty simple. Two with shrimp dinners, two with New York steaks and one with teriyaki beef. We were all quite happy with our portions and if you feel you need extra rice, they will bring more out. If you have saved a bit of room, there's lots of dessert options too but that comes with an additional price. I really was quite happy with that large selection of mocktails to try but for those that want it, there's a large selection of mixed alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, etc. The place is accessible from the outside doors to the grill tables and even though my brother struggles to see in dim lighting, there's enough random lighting that we found a well lit spot at the table for him. I liked that I didn't have to watch for random levels or steps. There are a few booths throughout the restaurant for those that maybe want a more secluded meal but there's no grills for those spots. So after such a glowing review, why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well as I had booked ahead of time and specifically gave a number of 5 people for the reservation, it would have been nice to know we would not have anything started to be cooked, nor our meal order taken until they fill the rest of the table around the grill. If I had that information, I could have easily invited a couple of friends to join. However as this came to us as surprise, it meant even though we didn't know who was joining us, we were forced to awkwardly wait over 15 min to have them arrive and then start giving our order when they were ready. At least some of the drinks had made it out by then but the place was starting to fill up so the noise level was increasing. Luckily for us my mom randomly know the couple that was sat at our grill table but there were parts of the dinner you could tell they would have enjoyed having their own time as a couple (as I'm quite sure they weren't informed they'd be part of a bigger table being that they were surprised that my mom thanked them for arriving on time so we can now order when they are ready). It would have also been a different experience for my family too without the combined table situation. I had to remind the chef who's steak was being prepared due to the over eager guy wanting a well done steak the same time as a medium rare... Things eventually got served to everyone but only because I spoke up, I was able to get near to what I had requested (glad that my dad at least got his medium rare) even though everyone had reconfirmed orders when the chef was placing the meat on the grill. Lastly, the noise in the restaurant was so high at the end of our meal that not only did my dad stop trying to have a conversation but so did the rest of us. So instead of savouring dessert, I ate it quickly as all I wanted was to pay the bill fast and just leave the noise. I've gone once before on a week night back in April and it was more manageable for noise level. This being due to not all grills were full nor was the restaurant as full.

I didn't even know Sherwood Park has a Japanese Village and I hadn't been to one in about 15 years. We had 14 in our group but this wasn't an issue as we were all able to all sit around two grills with two grill cooks. Our server did a great job of taking our drink orders, filling up our water glasses and making sure we were happy. I personally started with a pint of their house beer and the Tuna Sashimi. Both were tasty. For my main course I had Teppan - Yaki Dinner (Teriyaki Chicken) It came with soup, salad and green tea. Our grill cook was a nice young man who brought a smile to our face and kept us chuckling. For the value, I was happy with my meal, the price I payed and the fun interacting with our cook. I would definitely go back with a group of friends.
