Had dinner with my family. The dining environment is super good. We had some fried Tofu Twist or something as the starter. This one is my favourite for the night. The presentation and texture is excellent! We got spicy tuna roll and rainbow roll, which is not disappointing. However, the soy sauce is too salty comparing to other places. The worst part is Teppanyaki, we waited for over half an hour, it comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, a salad and the Teppanyaki. For the price of $22, I would expect more of meat. The taste is disappointing, the burned meat taste bitter and dry... Overall, I can see their efforts and excellence in service and management. But for the price of food, I think they need do more.. read more

What's the deal with Sushi Restaurants in Edmonton putting so much god damn rice in their rolls? Yea, I like rice but not 27 pounds (I mean kilos) in each freakin' roll! Mikado was good and I will probably return due to the lack of any better options around town, I just wish they wouldn't include so much rice. I think my favorite roll has to be the lobster roll. Even though its a million canadian dollars it is sorta worth it. Their seaweed salad ain't bad either. I also really enjoy their tea. That is all. read more

When you walk into this Mikado you feel as if you are walking into a fine dining restaurant. I was really impressed with the layout and design of the space and it was really modern. There is a very low bar that you can sit at, but there are also tables and booths available. The staff here are really friendly and seem to know their product. There is a really cool sail ship filled with sushi that you can order but I imagine it is super expensive. The food comes out looking like art, but once I bit into my spicy tuna roll, I was very surprised. The spice was so overwhelming that I could barely eat half of it. I always make sure to take food home for later but I didn't want to take any of it home. I will go back here for sure, but I won't be ordering the spicy tuna. read more

Kind of disappointed with the selection and quantity for the price. We are vegetarians but really enjoy Japanese food and the options here were pretty limited. 2 rolls - Yam with nothing else and Avocado with nothing else. No soups, curries, noodle dishes could be made vegetarian. We even asked if we could get the Mango Tango roll (Mango, Cucumber, Avocado, Red Pepper) without the Eel. She said she would check with the chefs. Came back and they could leave the Eel off but it would still cost $17. A little disappointing. We probably won't be back here. There are a few other places in the city who have better options. The price of the rolls with seafood are pretty steep. Food is fine if you are in a pinch but I wouldn't scope this place out on purpose. read more

On a busy sunday evening, service is kind of slow. Wait for seating takes 5 or so minutes even with reservation. All hosts in the front desk are trying to help set up a table for someone walk-in. Waiting in the room for another 10 min without service. Food in general is OK, nothing to brag about. read more

Place is lovely but service is very slow. No one to seat us and restaurant had only a few tables of customers. Not one server anywhere - Stood there for 10 mins before someone finally came to seat us. Also - spicy tuna cones have hardly any tuna in them. Order this item a lot at various places and amount of tuna various per place but this is a joke for what you get here. Comes are very small, hardly any tuna in them. Waste of money. Won't go here again just cause it looks like they are cheating out on ingredients. read more

Great food, great service, atmosphere was very inviting, and we really enjoyed the private room as we were fortunate enough that they had a free one available when we arrived. Food was delivered in a timely manner and was very well presented. Our order consisted mostly of sushi and the fish was very fresh ...one comment I heard often while we dined was how the red tuna and salmon felt like it melted in your mouth. It wasn't a cheap nor overly expensive experience at just over $30 per person; AND we were not looking for cheap - and nor did we buy the cheapest items on the menu. We ordered the menu items we wanted to enjoy and it was well worth it! We always love going to Mikado! One of our favourite things to order are the Dragon rolls; there are other restaurants that do them but this place does them best. Prices are average for a sushi restaurant. We will definitely keep coming back. read more

Took my husband to Mikado for the first time as he loves sushi (I do not) and they have some awesome stir fries for me. We had made a reservation which was important as it looked like they had quite a line up. We got our table on time which is always nice. You can get everything from tempura, to salads, to sushi/sashimi, to stir fries and a combo of all in a bento box. The photos don't do things justice when you get the meals. They're a lot larger in real life. I was able to take half my beef stirfry home for another meal and my husband was able to take half his bento box home. The food is awesome, the service was decent. Depending on where you sit, you can watch the chefs prepare everything which is a sight to see. Because it was so busy, the server wouldn't even ask us for dessert and wanted us to pay the second we finished our meals. I get that it's busy but when you're having a night out, it is nice when you can enjoy it fully without feeling the pressure to eat and run. read more

Very disappointed in them lately. Portions are getting smaller and quality is slipping. We had the tempura shrimp roll and the slices were the size of a loonie, and about a half inch thick, you could barely see the shrimp. Half the size from the previous time we had ordered. We tried the lobster king roll, the lobster was like leather, it was the worst thing I have ever eaten. Very disappointing for $30. Maybe I'm not as impressed with the decor as others because I have seen better? Don't get me wrong it is nice inside from what I have seen compared to other sushi restaurants in Edmonton, but it's not exquisite or anything. I do like the idea that you can get a private room for larger parties, that was handy since I was here for a birthday party of around 12 people on a Monday night. It was fairly busy for 8pm. I am still trying to find my favorite sushi restaurant in Edmonton, but I don't think this is going to be it. The sushi was good, but again I have seen better. As another reviewer wrote they a ton of rice into their rolls making it almost impossible to eat them in one bite. I don't understand why this is necessary? I ordered their dynamite and spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna was the hottest roll I have ever had, but it was really good. However, when every sushi restaurant has a dynamite roll on their menu I appreciate when they try to do something different, this is why their dynamite roll fell short. I also ordered the yellow tail sashimi to start which was fine, but not very much flavor. I really want to find a place that serves the new style sashimi where they slightly sear the fish first. I must say that the drink I ordered was so delicious. It was called a Rainforest off the cocktail menu, I could have had 10. I use to love this restaurant. What the hell happened? The service was bad to start with, our server had no clue as to what she was doing. Then the manger came over and started debating with me about the gomae I had sent back. Thing is it would have been all good had she not tried comparing their restaurant to Tojo's. Personally I don't agree with those kinds of practices. I had ordered tuna 6 pieces (11.00) they were the thinnest tuna I have seen to date, last was the king lobster roll (27.00) it looked as if the had just thrown it together and there was almost no lobster it. Being located in South Common, expect to wait 15-30 min. for a table of four. It's always so busy in here, especially around lunch on weekends after shopping. There's no waiting area, only a small bench and 3 chairs in the coat room. Really ridiculous, there's about 6 groups waiting for a table. People are comming in and out asking how long the wait is, stepping on my toes and entering my body space. Finally, the hosts calls for us to be seated, which was a relief because i was getting really frustrated and hungrey hearing my stomach eat itself. When we arrived at our table, we find it not throughly cleaned. My seat had chunks of what looked like tempura batter. I was just going whack it off with my hand, but my girlfriends noted to the host to have it cleaned again, but he just said the waiter would do it. So we were left standing around our table a good 5 min. The menu didn't have any special dishes that would stand out from the rest of the Japanese restaurants in town. It occasionally boast new menu items created by their sou chiefs, but by looking at the pictures, it doesn't seem tempting enough, especially when the price intimidates you. I ordered the dragon eyes to share with the group, it came out smaller than I remembered, so I had to order another plate of it. The lunch special- bento box #4, good,- but not great. This place used to be the gem. It is now bad. The chicken and beef teriyaki has been burnt and charred to the point of dry and tough. It tastes like the gas, smoke unpalatable flavour. You cannot mask that with the teriyaki sauce. Each time we've ordered this dish (10+). The sushi rolls have fallen in quality. Assembly is messy and doesn't look appetizing. The sashimi selection is now very limited to the usual everyday/everywhere fish: salmon, tuna, yellowtail. Disappointing. read more

What happen to Mikado these days? Wow the service of this place is so mediocure. I get that there's new girls, but isn't hospitality common sense? They use to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in Edmonton between 2001-2006. Since 1972, they've successfully opened 3 restaurants around the city. I've always liked the look of there restaurant inside. The decorative interior with cute ornaments and settings. I don't like there bentos here though. I find it to be too cliche. I always finish feeling like I knew I should of ordered something else. This night my friend wanted some Japanese food so Mikado was the closes to South Common was where we were. I love the cute tea pots and cups they serve here. I just don't like that they charge me for the tea now.... The menu flashes the food out to look super exciting to eat. They have new items all the time which is a nice surprise. We tried the king lobster roll ($25.95) because I love eating lobster! There were maybe 8 rolls. Hmmm.. my opinion overpriced lobster and it was only alright. Sign... I love spicy tuna and so we ask for an order of tuna maki. I was disappointed that it wasn't all that spicy and hand rolled. The mango tango roll was also alright. I couldn't taste the eel, because the mango was overpowering. I felt like the chef just slapped all the ingredients together carelessly. Tonight we arrived with barely anyone in the restaurant at 5:10pm. We were seated at 5:15 because they needed to clear a table - most tables were dirty. At 5:29 our waitress finally motioned that she would be back in a moment to take our order. She arrived at 5:37 to take our order (just about 20 minutes after we were seated). My husbands bento box came pretty quick, but my order (sashimi) arrived another 15 minutes later. So delicious and fresh. A friend and i ordered sushi rolls from the gluten free menu. We had the California, Philadelphia, rainbow and spider rolls (not gluten free) and finished off with a gluten free turtle cheesecake. The waitress was very sweet. It was steadily busy but not overly noisy. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The spider roll had a very strong BBQ and mustard sauce that we didn't like that much but the roll itself was delicious. A hidden gem inside Edmonton South Common. They serve standard Japanese fare, but the ingredients are better and worth the price upgrade. For example, for California rolls, you have the option of ordering the imitation crab or real crab meat. Also, for the rolls, you can order them either with caviar or sesame seeds. This nuanced approach to ordering means that the chef understands the difference of ingredients and price, and is giving options to his customer. I love going to this location! The food is always consistent, fresh and colourful. However, the ladies bathrooms were absolutely FILTHY. Toilet paper everywhere, sinks and toilets not cleaned from last use, soap not refilled...etc. I expect this from a gas station, but not from a nice, higher priced sushi restaurant. I was very disappointed. It grossed me out so much, I don't think I'll return. And that's a shame because it was my go-to place to dine in south common. read more

Usually I love this restaurant. The food is always good, but their service has seemed to go downhill. Last night we received all our appetizers and entrees at the same time. And once our table was cleared it took them 30 minutes to bring the bill. I eventually just took the bill up front to pay after waiting another 15 minutes after that.
