There are restaurants that paved the way and then there's Mikado, Alberta's first Japanese restaurant which opened in 1972. Now that's a trailblazer! Bringing Japanese food to a prairie province in the 70s must have been a huge risk - one that paid off and changed the landscape of Edmonton's food scene forever. Now with three different locations around the city and voted Favourite Sushi Restaurant 2023 in the Edmonton Journal, Mikado has stood the test of time and is always viewed as a trusted favourite when the craving for umami hits. Visiting on a Saturday evening, I made by way Downtown to the oldest Mikado location of the three. There's plenty of free parking (always a huge plus downtown) and the restaurant occupies a rather large space on a very busy corner. Entering through the door my group was met with an exuberant "irasshaimase!" from all of the nearby staff, a traditional welcome greeting. My eyes were immediately drawn to the long sushi counter which includes certified Japanese Sushi Chefs, a rainbow of ingredients before them, each one working on their next plated masterpiece. The restaurant is large and made up of various dining areas, including regular style tables, sushi bar seating, and many private tatami rooms. The space is clean and classic with pale wood creating most of the decor and sliding shoji panels that softly diffuse the light throughout the restaurant. It's a beautiful space that feels quintessentially Japanese. My group was seated in our own tatami room which certainly heightened the overall experience. In these rooms guests are meant to sit on the floor at a low table. It's common in western culture for a hole to be cut out under the table so that your legs are able to hang down and you'll actually be sitting quite normally - such is the case at Mikado. The most important rule of tatami dining is that you must remove your shoes and leave them outside of the room before entering. It would be very rude and disrespectful to leave your shoes on. Servers glided around the restaurant in beautiful kimonos and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Upon getting settled, I made my way to the cocktail menu and quickly found the Sake Caesar ($9.00), a favourite. Of course there are plenty of Japanese beers, sake, and plum wine as well. They also carry Ramune pop which is always a ton of fun! I love a savoury cocktail and a sake caesar like this one perfectly fit the bill. I loved the salty rim and the pickled green bean (why not pickled edamame?!). The use of sake adds a slightly different flavour and helps the beverage pair really well with the food. A true Canadian-Japanese fusion, I love ordering this drink when I see it on a menu. The food menu is extremely extensive and spans 13 full pages. I don't think they'll blame you when it takes a few minutes to come up with a dining plan. I enjoy that there's a really great Bento Box section where you can totally customize your perfect bento. This is an ideal option if you are dining with a group who has different tastes and doesn't intend to share dishes. Plus it's a great way to still try a little bit of everything! I also really liked that the menu (while very big) is bright, clear, and colourful. There are lots of photos that show you exactly what to expect the food to look like, plus illustrations that describe the fare (and how to eat it) in even more detail. The menu itself tells a story and is a bit of a learning experience all its own. There were lots of dishes that I wanted to order but there would've been no way to eat all of it. I had to pair down my selections quite a bit. (I wanted to try both the Dragon Eyes and Baked Scallop appetizers but there was just no way.) I tend to gravitate quite heavily to the sushi rolls, although there are truly so many varied options that don't necessarily include sushi at all. Mikado has fresh fish flown in weekly from the famous fish market in Toyosu, Japan. A roll that caught my eye is the Spider Roll (A whole soft-shell crab with kanikama, asparagus, cabbage, lettuce, and cream cheese rolled into one delicious roll - $25.00). The plating artistry at Mikado is very good. They do a wonderful job of putting out dishes that almost look more like a painting. You eat with your eyes first and this concept is celebrated quite well at this restaurant. This roll took some unexpected twists and turns. I ate my first piece without dipping the roll into anything, attempting to taste the roll exactly the way that it was prepared. I enjoyed the crispy fried soft shell crab and I think the addition of kanikama (imitation crab meat) was a smart way to round out the fact that this is a crab-centered roll. At first I felt that there was too much cabbage and lettuce used, making the roll taste more like a salad (although maybe a lighter, salad-like roll isn't such a bad thing!). 20 years ago when sushi was a fairly new thing for Edmonton, Mikado was my favourite restaurant. I was always thrilled with the food and the service. Lots of our girls nights were in the little seperate rooms and we had such a great time. However, in the last 10 years there is a plethora of sushi places that have opened with vibrant fresh dishes. And so we have found our new favourites and kinda forgotten about the Mikado. However, a friend wanted to meet up who has severe dietary restrictions and this is a place that she can eat at. And intially I was excited. First of all the prices shot up and are as expensive as some of the other places that we go to and the quality and quanity have declined. The bento box was skimpy, the fish didn't seem fresh and everything had an Edo Japan feel to it. The fried food was too long in the fryer. Even the shrimp appetizer came out and it reminded of the glamour of the 90s but it was chewy as heck. After we left my husband, who leaves food critiquing to me said, "Wow that was disappointing." It's insanely busy at lunch time bc they have the best Bento in the city...just be prepared to wait bc the place is extremely busy at lunch time. I find the fish and all ingredients to be super fresh here. I've never had a bad experience. My go to dishes here are the beef tataki deluxe sashimi, chop chop roll with tobiko and assorted tempura. It's a classic meal and very filling and satisfying. The dragon rolls are pretty famous here, but I've never been a fan of sauce on my sushi...so it's never on my order. If you want to try something tasty and different I like to order the spider crab or sushi pizza. They both are so tasty and made the best here compared to other places. I know there are new hip more modern places I'm town. But sometimes the classics outweigh the competition in my books. The sashimi is not the best quality in town. But it's fresh and reliable and affordable. The best values are if you are with a group of people....Definitely order the boat! It cones with so much food and it's delicious. In the US, you usually stay away from sushi in the middle of the country but I read good things about Mikado. For sashimi, I got bluefin tuna, which is supposed to be the most sought type of tuna, and saba (mackerel). To be honest, I wasn't particularly impressed with the bluefin but I think this speaks more to my preferred type of tuna growing up which has a glossy appearance. The mackerel was less strongly flavored than others I've had. I prefer the stronger flavor so the sashimi overall was just okay for me. Then I had the dragon eyes roll. I'm a bit picky on rolls and this was one that didn't have any of the stuff I don't like to eat. Nice crispiness on the exterior and good volume. Main dish was chicken tsukune udon. I haven't had tsukune udon much, overall I'd rate it average but the udon had good "koshi" (bite) and this is a dish you don't find at your standard Japanese restaurant. Finally, dessert was tempura green tea ice cream. I was warned it was fairly large. I could barely finish it (though I did eat a lot of other things). Definitely share this with someone because you don't want the tempura batter getting soft by the time you finish! As good as I remember fried ice cream being. I'm trying to try all the ramen in the city. I saw that Mikado has it on the menu so I stopped in at lunch on a Friday. Oops. They only have ramen on Saturdays. Now I get to review a few items. When you enter you are welcomed with a traditional Japanese greeting from the kitchen. After ordering, you are given a traditional hot towel to start your visit. Nice touch. I had a bento box for a lunch. Although priced a bit little high for a regular lunch spot, the serving size and quality certainly are worth the price. Based on that visit, I would give this place a 4. What I was really looking for was ramen but didn't realize it is only served on Saturdays. My wife and I ordered two types to try: Tonkotsu with 2 pieces of chasyu, nitamago (marinated egg), negi (onion) and kikurage mushrooms. It was creamy but lacked the boldness found elsewhere. The noodles were almost twice the amount you would find elsewhere. I found the meat lacked fat and were cut very thin. The roasted garlic were the dehydrated slices which has the same affect as black garlic oil but it's not quite the same. Not my favourite but my wife loved it mostly because it wasn't very ramen-y. I ordered the Shio ramen which had a clear, salty broth with the same noodles as the Tonkotsu. Of the four offerings, this had the most toppings including nitamago, menma, naruto (flat, swirly fish cakes), corn, butter and seaweed. Although many places use noodles prepared elsewhere, these were noticeably packaged. I had a hunch and confirmed with our server. I wasn't a fan overall. Based on the ramen, I would give it a 2 but my wife's vote would being that up. Overall, Mikado is an attractive restaurant with a solid menu and enough cultural touches to make it feel a little more authentic. We ordered food from this location last night. I have been there a lot of times. The food is usually good and I like the atmosphere and the service. Last night we ordered assorted sashimi, rainbow rolls, spicy tuna rolls, chop chop rolls. Everything was pretty good but my least favourite was the spicy tuna rolls. I have had better rolls before and some how I found this roll a little plain. I prefer to have something more than just hot sauce and tuna. This roll didn't really have the kick that I expected. One of my fav Japanese Restaurant in Edm. I love their bento boxes during lunch hours! My all-time favorite is A2 and A4. Also, their signature sushi, spicy dragon eyes. The food is as it always has been. I like how the staff is dressed up in Japanese traditional clothing and they have rooms where you can sit on the floor. These add up to the Jap culture ambiance. Service: Very efficient. Staffs greet you soon as you come in. Food/s: A2- Salmon Teriyaki, beef yakiniku, yakitori, bbq shrimp, rice, green salad, and takoyaki. This is my favorite bento box ever! it has a little bit of everything. The sweet teriyaki sauce on the skewers and the salmon is the bomb! However, the salmon was kind of dry and a little hard today. That's why I only gave it a 4 star. Nonetheless, I would still get the same thing for next time. A4- Beef shogayaki, chicken teriyaki, mixed tempura, green salad, and rice. Everything was good on this bento. The tempura was lightly battered and not too oily. Dipping it to tentsuyu sauce hits all different flavors; sweet, salty, a tangy Takoyaki- ball-shaped flour-based battered filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onion. The takoyaki isn't cutting it. They weren't crunchy on the outside. It started falling apart and a little stingy on the octopus filling. Best sushi I've ever had! I always get the same rolls, the Brad rolls are my favourite, I also get the tempura shrimp roll, and dynamite roll. I also love the avocado roll, and the red rose roll. The Brad roll has tempura shrimp and avocado and it's wrapped with salmon. The tempura shrimp roll is very simple, it's just tempura shrimp, wrapped in avocado. I think everyone knows what's in a dynamite roll, but it's tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, spicy sauce, chopped scallops, tobiko, and mayo. Best dynamite rolls I've ever had though! And the avocado roll doesn't have any seafood, it's just rice with avocado wrapped in avocado. The red rose roll is bbq eel and avocado, wrapped in salmon or bluefin tuna. The staff is amazing, the place is always clean, and authentic, and it's fairly well priced for good quality sushi. I only come to this sushi place. read more

Last visited in the summer, and A-OK sums up our last visit. Seating ranges from tables to booths, to tatami rooms. Sometimes, it's nice to be separate from the rest of the guests. It can be busy - you might want to call ahead or place a reservation. Although sitting at the sushi bar is not a bad place to be. Some of the tables are a little cozy. I don't always enjoy hearing (or sharing) all the conversations of guests in a metre of my conversation. We order take-out as well from time to time. I like being greeted with a warm towel... this seems to be one of the very few places that still honours that hospitality. This is one place that does claim to serve Gluten Free sushi. I am pleased to say that they have procured ingredients that are safe to eat, and the wait staff seem knowledgeable about what is available. You CAN get a California roll made with real crab. However, on my last visit, the waitress did inform us it is canned. I understand we're landlocked, but it kind of disappointed me, and made me a little sad. I don't usually order Bento boxes because I can't eat most of the items, so we order miso soup, a cone and one or two rolls. Rumour has it that if you bring bacon, Jerry will make a special roll for you. It's not an inexpensive dining experience, but it is enjoyable. Of the sushi places we frequent in downtown Edmonton, Mikado is second on the list of go-to choices. I visited this place with my girlfriends on the weekend and it was pretty awesome. We showed up late and hadn't been there before, but we got a table instantly and the server was super friendly and eager to teach us about all that we didn't know when it comes to sushi. Her name was Ai and she helped us choose what we wanted because we realized we wanted a little bit of everything. Ultimately most of us went with the bento boxes but I was courageous and went with a sashimi plate and an order of mango rolls. They were awesome, some of the best sushi I've had. All in all it was a great experience. I did notice it was sort of pricey... could just be the quality of the food. I paid 30$ not including tip and I felt as though I could've got a little more "full" off the food. But I left happy and would definitely go again. read more

There will be some new and exciting kinds of sushi pizza too! So happy! ******************************************* Over the years, my best friend and I have come here so often, that it's become "our thing" to do. Traditionally, we order salmon sashimi pizza, assorted tempura and coconut tempura ice cream. It's ironic that I chose to write a review now, considering they've just made some changes in their menu. Sadly, salmon sashimi pizza, didn't make the cut. However, I'm confident that I'll find new favorites. The food here is of excellent quality. For my recent visit, I tried the following rolls: 1) Chop Chop rolls with sesame (8 pieces) which is made with avocado, chopped scallop with tobiko and mayo. 2) Brad roll (8 pieces) which is made with tempura shrimp and avocado wrapped with salmon. 3) Mango Tango rolls (8 pieces) which is made with eel, cucumber, red pepper wrapped with mango and avocado. All of these were beautifully presented, colorful, fresh and very tasty! I definitely recommend ordering a variety of rolls and sharing, this way you can sample more of the menu. For dessert, my friend and I ate coconut tempura ice cream! The portion size is huge. It's usually cut into 4 large wedges. This can be shared between 1-4 people depending on how much of a sweet tooth you have. After the above meal my friend and I spent $35 each after taxes and gratuity. This place was great right from the beginning. I was visiting Edmonton with my family from Toronto and I have to say I was not expecting to find such a good place for Japanese food so I was pleasantly surprised! When we first arrived (with no reservation) the woman working asked our group to wait for a minute but within two minutes gave us a private room with the sunken table in it even though there were only four of us. There is really not much to complain about here. The service was fast, all the people who served us were VERY polite and friendly with us and the food itself was very good and fresh tasting. It was also a very decent price compared to comparable places in Toronto. We ordered a number of dishes including udon, tempura, terriyaki and a variety of rolls and were all very pleased with our food which is pretty rare for our group! We also ordered the mochi ice cream sampler (chocolate, vanilla, green tea and sesame flavours) which I have been wanting to try for ages so I was very excited. It definitely lived up to expectations. Definitely would recommend this place and go again. I would consider this a good place for sushi in Edmonton. Good maki and sashimi, anyway. We went all out with a take out order with some friends a few weeks ago (it was going to be their last sushi meal for awhile). We ordered 8 rolls, some veggie tempura, and three half orders of sashimi. In retrospect it may have been a little much though it came out to $40 per person (including tax and tip) which I think is reasonable for the quality of the food that we got. Plus it made for some really tasty leftovers - the rice held up really well after being refrigerated overnight and oddly so did the prepared wasabi (I find that prepared wasabi usually has no flavor the next day). All the rolls were really good. The right size and not too much rice. They ran out of tuna (how does that happen?) for their red rose roll so they wrapped it with salmon instead (which was fine since I love salmon but it would have been nice to try it the way it's supposed to be normally). It's kind of neat with the unagi inside - they even give you some of that sweet sauce to dip it in. In fact, they gave us lots of assorted sauces depending on what went with the roll. There was the sweet clear tempura sauce to go with the tempura shrimp roll. A spicy mayo came with the lobster king roll - which by the way, is fantastic and totally worth the price. They don't cheap out with a large chunk of perfectly cooked lobster tail running through the roll. One of the rolls even came with bonito flakes but we had no idea which one. The salmon and scallop sashimi were really good - nice big slices of each - but I found the tuna belly sub-par. I think it should have been more melt-in-your-mouth. One thing I liked and disliked was the packaging. They put every roll and sashimi in its own styrofoam container. They labeled each one and while it was nice to know which roll was which, I found it a little wasteful. Overall a great place that I would definitely eat at again if I'm in the mood to splurge on some good sushi. read more

On my short 6 day trip to Edmonton, I insisted on eating at Mikado because of their sushi pizza. I didn't have any expectations because it has been over 4 yrs since I have last eaten here. I have to say it was quite disappointing. We ordered: Sashimi Combo - It came with salmon, tuna, squid, surf clam and octopus. The squid was slimy and really bad. Everything else was ok but a couple of the items were borderline not fresh. Dynamite roll - It was ok, not great but not too bad. I was surprised to see they did not use the typical fat short grain japanese rice for their sushi. It was a type of medium/long grain rice. What a way to cut cost (not impressed) Salmon Sushi pizza - Not bad, with a nice spicy mayo and topped with nori n tobiko. The salmon was not bad. The rice was ice cold which we did not enjoy. Quite honestly, while I originally adored this restaurant, I now have other favorites in Edmonton. But that doesn't mean that this location isn't an impressive one in its own way. Perhaps it has become a bit more westernized over time, but it still provides an amazing quality of food and service. Having been here many times in over a decade, I can say that while this is a pricier location for sushi and other Japanese food, it's still a good one. I really like their private rooms, and find their bento boxes to be of good value. Sometimes you can get their off-the-menu rolls (such as the bacon roll, created in honour of Bacon man Jerry Aulenbach). When I was taking Japanese language classes in university, this was the restaurant that was chosen for a class field trip as they still had enough staff who could serve us in Japanese. It being Alberta's first Japanese restaurant in the 1970s, it has withstood the test of time and remains a favorite of the downtown Edmonton community. read more

The dragon rolls were very delicious and a must try for anyone eating here. Their Gyoza is probably the best gyoza I have had since I was in Japan almost a year ago. We ordered a bento box set for 18.99 which had more than enough food for the both of us and included sashimi, terriyaki chicken, salmon, tonkatsu and salad. I enjoyed everything except for the terriyaki chicken. Service was decent, the waitress forgot to bring our hot towels before the meal, but other than that was good. I love this place. I've only been twice, both times with my boyfriend, both times we got one of the private rooms (so I can't really comment on the restaurant vibe, but walking in and out it seems to be pretty relaxed, although busy). The food though, is so so so delicious. We usually get 3 or 4 sushi rolls and an appetizer. Way too much food for two people, but it's so good, we stuff ourselves into food comas. My favourite roll is the "Dragon Eyes", and the sesame sauce that comes with it; I could drink that, it's so amazing! Definitely recommend Mikado for a date night - get the private room (call ahead for reservations), it makes for an intimate dinner, plus you get to sit on the floor and take off your shoes! read more

Last time I was in I had just had a veggie burger next door at Harvey's lol and still felt hungry so went over to Mikado and our bill was still over 100 with no drinks. Their fish collar dish is a treat, comes with a few little sides to mix and match your flavour each bite. And the calamari is grilled nicely. And the lobster roll mmmm. Great atmosphere and clean restaurant. Food was good got the A2 bento box and dragon eyes. Beef had a little salty taste to it but the sauce it was served with balanced it out perfectly. The salmon skin was burnt but the salmon itself was juicy and soft. The dragon eyes had perfect flavour and wasn't too spicy. Date night: dinner and movie. I was craving sushi, and I was interested in trying a new (to us) place. Our standbys on the north side are usually Japonais Bistro (which we LOVE) for a more modern sushi and Kyoto (which is fine) for traditional sushi. I wanted to expand our repertoire so Mikado it was. For our meal, we started with the seaweed salad - always a favourite of mine. Then we shared a Red Rose roll, which contained BBQ eel and avocado inside with either blue fin tuna or salmon on the outside, we had wanted the tuna, but unfortunately, they only had salmon when we stopped in. We also had the regular sushi combo which came with a predetermined 8 pieces of nigiri (two salmon, two cooked fish, two tuna, one razor clam, and one yellow tail) and a predetermined maki roll (salmon). We also had two glasses of saki, and we finished the meal with green tea mochi ice cream. Overall, the meal was fine. The sushi was of nice quality. In my mind, it is roughly the same quality as Kyoto, which is less expensive and closer to our home. But if you live near Mikado and want decent sushi, check it out. read more

Mikado is WAY overpriced and there's nothing special on the menu that pulls me in. Actually, I shouldn't say nothing because I do enjoy the dragon eyes.. but I would never go to Mikado just to get them. I don't know how fresh everything was because all of my rolls were tasteless. The decor is really nice. Probably the nicest of any Japanese one in the city, but who wants to pay for that? The service is so slow. They took forever to bring out our food and the portions were weak. I don't think I would come here again. read more

I went with my colleagues to Mikado for lunch. One of them is from Japan and was asking me about restaurants in Edmonton that serve Japanese food so I suggested this place as I had heard good things but hadn't tried it. We were seated in a private area and all ordered bento boxes. I was impressed with the amount of food and quality. The tempura was lightly battered and light but generous with 5 pieces. The chicken teriyaki sauce wasn't overly thick or heavy but had the right amount of flavour. I really enjoyed the dressing on the salad and the sushi was fresh and tasy. There was a lot of food but the price is a little more than other places offering bento boxes. I would definitely go back. read more

It's in a bit of an odd location, not in the trendy area of downtown. Don't let that throw you off, though. The restaurant was quiet when I went, but kind of in a calm sort of way. My gal pal and I were seated quickly for lunch and had fun going through the big menu picking out all things Japanese for our midday eat. Our waitress was great, and although Japanese isn't usually my first choice for a meal, I really liked my food. MIkado is consistently top notch. This is my third favourite sushi place in town, and one of the two it's behind is their other location on the West End. :) When I'm with a non sharer I usually get a Bento Box, but otherwise sushi is made for sharing. Bring lots of people and get lots of rolls. That way you get to try a lot of great stuff. read more

Foolishly I tried other sushi places after moving to Edmonton hoping to find a place that actually served decent sushi. It wasnt until I tried Mikado that I could say "yes- Edmonton has good sushi" The quality of food I had here was absolutely great. My friend and I shared the tuna tataki salad, tempura shrimp roll, and the brad roll. All three items I would order again. The service was ok- it was a full house when we went and I understand service can suffer when you are busy like that. But all of the servers were really nice and brought us what we asked. Downtown Location: My significant other calls it the Sushi Pizza place and regularly requests that we go there at every opportunity. I know you're a food snob and turn your nose up at the thought of Sushi Pizza, but just get your head out of your ass and buy the Sushi Pizza. read more
