Chop chop roll with tobiko for $12
    Michelle F.

Busy place. Consistently fresh fish and ingredients. Best Bento in edmonton. Good value for freshness and quality. Mikado doesn't disappoint me. It has been consistent ever since I started going here 2 decades ago. It's insanely busy at lunch time bc they have the best Bento in the city...just be prepared to wait bc the place is extremely busy at lunch time. I find the fish and all ingredients to be super fresh here. I've never had a bad experience. My go to dishes here are the beef tataki deluxe sashimi, chop chop roll with tobiko and assorted tempura. It's a classic meal and very filling and satisfying. The dragon rolls are pretty famous here, but I've never been a fan of sauce on my sushi...so it's never on my order. If you want to try something tasty and different I like to order the spider crab or sushi pizza. They both are so tasty and made the best here compared to other places. I know there are new hip more modern places I'm town. But sometimes the classics outweigh the competition in my books. The sashimi is not the best quality in town. But it's fresh and reliable and affordable. The best values are if you are with a group of people....Definitely order the boat! It cones with so much food and it's delicious. My go to when I feel like an upscale meal with out breaking the bank. In a nice traditional but busy atmosphere. Been coming here for years for a reason.

Came here for some gluten-free California rolls as I have many times in the past. I didn't look at the menu that they no longer offer gluten-free crab and they sub salmon. It's my fault for not looking at the menu, but I was VERY disappointed when I opened my box b/c I made a double order, and this is not what I wanted.

    Bluefin tuna and mackerel sashimi
    Masaru O.

In the US, you usually stay away from sushi in the middle of the country but I read good things about Mikado. For sashimi, I got bluefin tuna, which is supposed to be the most sought type of tuna, and saba (mackerel). To be honest, I wasn't particularly impressed with the bluefin but I think this speaks more to my preferred type of tuna growing up which has a glossy appearance. The mackerel was less strongly flavored than others I've had. I prefer the stronger flavor so the sashimi overall was just okay for me. Then I had the dragon eyes roll. I'm a bit picky on rolls and this was one that didn't have any of the stuff I don't like to eat. Nice crispiness on the exterior and good volume. Main dish was chicken tsukune udon. I haven't had tsukune udon much, overall I'd rate it average but the udon had good "koshi" (bite) and this is a dish you don't find at your standard Japanese restaurant. Finally, dessert was tempura green tea ice cream. I was warned it was fairly large. I could barely finish it (though I did eat a lot of other things). Definitely share this with someone because you don't want the tempura batter getting soft by the time you finish! As good as I remember fried ice cream being. I also overheard many of the employees speaking Japanese at the end of the night which is always a good sign.

I haven't had the opportunity to eat here in many years. Happy to say I haven't missed out on much. Although service was friendly from the get go, food quality left a lot to desire. Bento box rice was hard and almost unedible. Vegetarian sushi left a lot to be desired. Even miso soup could've been hotter. Social distancing was in place and appreciated the wiping down of seats as well.

Lunch bento. Not cheap but filling.

I'm trying to try all the ramen in the city. I saw that Mikado has it on the menu so I stopped in at lunch on a Friday. Oops. They only have ramen on Saturdays. Now I get to review a few items. When you enter you are welcomed with a traditional Japanese greeting from the kitchen. After ordering, you are given a traditional hot towel to start your visit. Nice touch. I had a bento box for a lunch. Although priced a bit little high for a regular lunch spot, the serving size and quality certainly are worth the price. Based on that visit, I would give this place a 4. What I was really looking for was ramen but didn't realize it is only served on Saturdays. My wife and I ordered two types to try: Tonkotsu with 2 pieces of chasyu, nitamago (marinated egg), negi (onion) and kikurage mushrooms. It was creamy but lacked the boldness found elsewhere. The noodles were almost twice the amount you would find elsewhere. I found the meat lacked fat and were cut very thin. The roasted garlic were the dehydrated slices which has the same affect as black garlic oil but it's not quite the same. Not my favourite but my wife loved it mostly because it wasn't very ramen-y. I ordered the Shio ramen which had a clear, salty broth with the same noodles as the Tonkotsu. Of the four offerings, this had the most toppings including nitamago, menma, naruto (flat, swirly fish cakes), corn, butter and seaweed. Although many places use noodles prepared elsewhere, these were noticeably packaged. I had a hunch and confirmed with our server. I wasn't a fan overall. Based on the ramen, I would give it a 2 but my wife's vote would being that up. Overall, Mikado is an attractive restaurant with a solid menu and enough cultural touches to make it feel a little more authentic. I would recommend coming but would suggest you skip the ramen.

We ordered food from this location last night. I have been there a lot of times. The food is usually good and I like the atmosphere and the service. Last night we ordered assorted sashimi, rainbow rolls, spicy tuna rolls, chop chop rolls. Everything was pretty good but my least favourite was the spicy tuna rolls. I have had better rolls before and some how I found this roll a little plain. I prefer to have something more than just hot sauce and tuna. This roll didn't really have the kick that I expected. But I still like their food.

One of my fav Japanese Restaurant in Edm. I love their bento boxes during lunch hours! My all-time favorite is A2 and A4. Also, their signature sushi, spicy dragon eyes. The food is as it always has been. I like how the staff is dressed up in Japanese traditional clothing and they have rooms where you can sit on the floor. These add up to the Jap culture ambiance. Service: Very efficient. Staffs greet you soon as you come in. Food/s: A2- Salmon Teriyaki, beef yakiniku, yakitori, bbq shrimp, rice, green salad, and takoyaki. This is my favorite bento box ever! it has a little bit of everything. The sweet teriyaki sauce on the skewers and the salmon is the bomb! However, the salmon was kind of dry and a little hard today. That's why I only gave it a 4 star. Nonetheless, I would still get the same thing for next time. A4- Beef shogayaki, chicken teriyaki, mixed tempura, green salad, and rice. Everything was good on this bento. The tempura was lightly battered and not too oily. Dipping it to tentsuyu sauce hits all different flavors; sweet, salty, a tangy Takoyaki- ball-shaped flour-based battered filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onion. The takoyaki isn't cutting it. They weren't crunchy on the outside. It started falling apart and a little stingy on the octopus filling. Price: $39 cad Overall, Mikado is still an old friend that I would come back and hang out with.

    Dynamite rolls.
    Emily S.

Best sushi I've ever had! I always get the same rolls, the Brad rolls are my favourite, I also get the tempura shrimp roll, and dynamite roll. I also love the avocado roll, and the red rose roll. The Brad roll has tempura shrimp and avocado and it's wrapped with salmon. The tempura shrimp roll is very simple, it's just tempura shrimp, wrapped in avocado. I think everyone knows what's in a dynamite roll, but it's tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, spicy sauce, chopped scallops, tobiko, and mayo. Best dynamite rolls I've ever had though! And the avocado roll doesn't have any seafood, it's just rice with avocado wrapped in avocado. The red rose roll is bbq eel and avocado, wrapped in salmon or bluefin tuna. The staff is amazing, the place is always clean, and authentic, and it's fairly well priced for good quality sushi. I only come to this sushi place.

Dishonest restaurant!!! Last month I ordered and my staff PICK UP food. They charge 18% for tip and it is $105.27 I didn't check the bill at that time. Who can expect this restaurant cheat their customer. I wish I could select my rating for ZERO.

Never disappoints! The food is delish! I ordered a lot of food just because i was starving. And i have to say, my stomach is saying it's full but my eyes, brain and sense of smell makes me want to have more! It was definitely packed well, neatly and organized. No spills from any sauce. The place is also organized well for pick up orders. The food was ready right when they said it would be. Koodos Mikado, you did it!

I visited this place with my girlfriends on the weekend and it was pretty awesome. We showed up late and hadn't been there before, but we got a table instantly and the server was super friendly and eager to teach us about all that we didn't know when it comes to sushi. Her name was Ai and she helped us choose what we wanted because we realized we wanted a little bit of everything. Ultimately most of us went with the bento boxes but I was courageous and went with a sashimi plate and an order of mango rolls. They were awesome, some of the best sushi I've had. All in all it was a great experience. I did notice it was sort of pricey... could just be the quality of the food. I paid 30$ not including tip and I felt as though I could've got a little more "full" off the food. But I left happy and would definitely go again.

    Chop Chop roll at Mikado.
    Kat W.

Per my tip on 11 March 2016, our favorite server, Shiba, at Mikado in downtown, shared some happy news...sushi pizza will be coming back soon! There will be some new and exciting kinds of sushi pizza too! So happy! ******************************************* Over the years, my best friend and I have come here so often, that it's become "our thing" to do. Traditionally, we order salmon sashimi pizza, assorted tempura and coconut tempura ice cream. It's ironic that I chose to write a review now, considering they've just made some changes in their menu. Sadly, salmon sashimi pizza, didn't make the cut. However, I'm confident that I'll find new favorites. The food here is of excellent quality. For my recent visit, I tried the following rolls: 1) Chop Chop rolls with sesame (8 pieces) which is made with avocado, chopped scallop with tobiko and mayo. 2) Brad roll (8 pieces) which is made with tempura shrimp and avocado wrapped with salmon. 3) Mango Tango rolls (8 pieces) which is made with eel, cucumber, red pepper wrapped with mango and avocado. All of these were beautifully presented, colorful, fresh and very tasty! I definitely recommend ordering a variety of rolls and sharing, this way you can sample more of the menu. For dessert, my friend and I ate coconut tempura ice cream! The portion size is huge. It's usually cut into 4 large wedges. This can be shared between 1-4 people depending on how much of a sweet tooth you have. After the above meal my friend and I spent $35 each after taxes and gratuity. Please note this price includes an order of tea and Coke. If you love Japanese food, especially sushi, I'd definitely recommend this place! Sooo yummy!

Ice cream mochi sampler. Chocolate, vanilla, green tea and sesame flavours.

This place was great right from the beginning. I was visiting Edmonton with my family from Toronto and I have to say I was not expecting to find such a good place for Japanese food so I was pleasantly surprised! When we first arrived (with no reservation) the woman working asked our group to wait for a minute but within two minutes gave us a private room with the sunken table in it even though there were only four of us. There is really not much to complain about here. The service was fast, all the people who served us were VERY polite and friendly with us and the food itself was very good and fresh tasting. It was also a very decent price compared to comparable places in Toronto. We ordered a number of dishes including udon, tempura, terriyaki and a variety of rolls and were all very pleased with our food which is pretty rare for our group! We also ordered the mochi ice cream sampler (chocolate, vanilla, green tea and sesame flavours) which I have been wanting to try for ages so I was very excited. It definitely lived up to expectations. Definitely would recommend this place and go again. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I have had (just slightly) better japanese food elsewhere. Still a solid 4.5/5 though!

And after our dinner, this place will be pretty difficult to beat. We came here for our anniversary dinner. My boyfriend put in a reservation earlier, and once we arrived we were seated pretty quickly. It was a Monday night but I was so surprised at how packed the place was. This was our first time here so the server explained how ordering on the slip works. Wait time wasn't terrible. And like I mentioned before, this place was so packed and full of people. All the servers that night were weaving through aisles, delivering food, and taking orders. They were all hustling. Food was delicious. We started off with a couple of rolls like California Rolls, Avocado, Tuna, Salmon, and Tamago. The sushi rolls were pretty small, but I didn't have a problem with it. Since it's AYCE, I knew that we'd have much more food coming. I was very impressed by the quality of fish. It tasted very fresh. Also we ordered the seared Beef Nigiri and that was delicious. We ended up ordering more of that later. For the next round, we ordered Edamame, Beef (? it was like a beef galbi cut but I forgot the name of it on the menu), Chicken Skewers, Green Onion Cake, and Tempura. For our Tempura veggies we chose pumpkin, yam, and eggplant. I loved the tempura. It was definitely a highlight of the night. The batter was very crispy, light, and all the tempura came out hot. It was wonderful. We ended up getting more after the first round of tempura because it was too good. The Chicken Skewers were phenomenal. My boyfriend and I were saying that if we had the Chicken Skewers with rice, that would just be enough. The flavor of the sauce was great: savory, slightly sweet, it was reminiscent of a teriyaki flavor for me. And lastly, we had the BC Roll, Alberta Roll, Crunchy Roll, Philadelphia Roll, the seared Beef Nigiri again, and a few other rolls. At this point of the dinner we barely had any steam left but somehow we managed. Every single we thing we ate was just amazing. I wasn't disappointed by anything we ordered actually it was just great. I will say the Crunchy Roll had this smokiness that scratched my brain in the best way possible and I was so impressed by that bite. This was such an unforgettable experience and the best place we've spent our anniversary haha. 10/10, take my money. To Sushi Toshi, I'll be thinking about you.

So this review is a bit late but thought I should still write it as my Dad (who only ever really…read moreenjoys eating steak and potatoes or sometimes a pizza) thought this was a good enough restaurant to return to. So what made it that great that my dad would give it such a high review? First, if you've never seen an advertisement for this place, prepare yourself for ongoing talking and some well rehearsed comedy from the chefs. There literally is a live cooking show being done with your meals right in front of you. This combination of humour and meal prep was a big hit for my family (the 5 of us were constantly commenting on how things were being cooked, what was new to us and encouraging the ongoing trials of the fork toss plus the salt and pepper tossing trick by the chef). Second, it might be a Japanese place but they have steak! You may have guessed with my intro but that was an important decision factor in choosing a restaurant. We wanted a different place for the early Christmas family gathering but something everyone could enjoy. Third, they're very diligent about respecting allergies. My sister-in-law gets very ill with her allergies. So it's nice not having to worry. They set her food specifically on one area of the grill and no other food was ever placed there. Hers was never combined with the rest of ours either. They also had a different soup for her to enjoy and did a vinaigrette on her salad instead of the house dressing. The food itself is a decent price for a fine dining experience and what you get with the dinner. There's soup, salad, grilled shrimp, grilled veggies and whatever you choose as your main. All with great flavour and you get two different dipping sauces - one being better for meat and other with vegetables. Obviously if you select the options of more seafood to accompany the main piece of the meal, the price is more expensive. We all kept it pretty simple. Two with shrimp dinners, two with New York steaks and one with teriyaki beef. We were all quite happy with our portions and if you feel you need extra rice, they will bring more out. If you have saved a bit of room, there's lots of dessert options too but that comes with an additional price. I really was quite happy with that large selection of mocktails to try but for those that want it, there's a large selection of mixed alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, etc. The place is accessible from the outside doors to the grill tables and even though my brother struggles to see in dim lighting, there's enough random lighting that we found a well lit spot at the table for him. I liked that I didn't have to watch for random levels or steps. There are a few booths throughout the restaurant for those that maybe want a more secluded meal but there's no grills for those spots. So after such a glowing review, why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well as I had booked ahead of time and specifically gave a number of 5 people for the reservation, it would have been nice to know we would not have anything started to be cooked, nor our meal order taken until they fill the rest of the table around the grill. If I had that information, I could have easily invited a couple of friends to join. However as this came to us as surprise, it meant even though we didn't know who was joining us, we were forced to awkwardly wait over 15 min to have them arrive and then start giving our order when they were ready. At least some of the drinks had made it out by then but the place was starting to fill up so the noise level was increasing. Luckily for us my mom randomly know the couple that was sat at our grill table but there were parts of the dinner you could tell they would have enjoyed having their own time as a couple (as I'm quite sure they weren't informed they'd be part of a bigger table being that they were surprised that my mom thanked them for arriving on time so we can now order when they are ready). It would have also been a different experience for my family too without the combined table situation. I had to remind the chef who's steak was being prepared due to the over eager guy wanting a well done steak the same time as a medium rare... Things eventually got served to everyone but only because I spoke up, I was able to get near to what I had requested (glad that my dad at least got his medium rare) even though everyone had reconfirmed orders when the chef was placing the meat on the grill. Lastly, the noise in the restaurant was so high at the end of our meal that not only did my dad stop trying to have a conversation but so did the rest of us. So instead of savouring dessert, I ate it quickly as all I wanted was to pay the bill fast and just leave the noise. I've gone once before on a week night back in April and it was more manageable for noise level. This being due to not all grills were full nor was the restaurant as full.

I didn't even know Sherwood Park has a Japanese Village and I hadn't been to one in about 15 years. We had 14 in our group but this wasn't an issue as we were all able to all sit around two grills with two grill cooks. Our server did a great job of taking our drink orders, filling up our water glasses and making sure we were happy. I personally started with a pint of their house beer and the Tuna Sashimi. Both were tasty. For my main course I had Teppan - Yaki Dinner (Teriyaki Chicken) It came with soup, salad and green tea. Our grill cook was a nice young man who brought a smile to our face and kept us chuckling. For the value, I was happy with my meal, the price I payed and the fun interacting with our cook. I would definitely go back with a group of friends.

An ad for this had come up on my instagram a few months ago. I had bookmarked this to try out one of these days as the food looked good and I also heard good things about it. As my friend and I had plans in Leduc I figured it would be nice to stop here for dinner. I like how their booths are all private. There is a call button in the booth so that you can ring them anytime you need service. They also have the wifi password taped onto the wall in the both. The service was very prompt as soon as we pressed the button someone arrived within 1 minute. The staff was very kind and attentive. The restaurant wasn't very busy for a Saturday night which was kind of nice. They have a pretty decent sized menu with a variety of options. I love how they have photos of each roll and list which rolls are fully cooked and which ones aren't. We ordered the sexy mexican roll, volcano roll, and the scallop extravaganza. All were delicious! The fish was very fresh as was the rice. Each roll was a good size and packed with flavour. The price was pretty on par with all sushi places. Although I didn't order this, the tempura pieces were massive from the orders I saw that went out. This is definitely a place I'll become a regular at. They have two locations (Edmonton south and Leduc)
