I haven't been to Japanese Village in a very long time -we went to the downtown location and appreciated that they still had dividers at the big tables. I also really appreciate that they had a vegetarian option at a fair price. ( tofu and vegetables) This time we found our chef was very rushed and didn't really take the time to do the usual show. Came here on a whim with the hubs and our 3 year old in tow. The scent of grilled meat wafting outside the restaurant is what lured us in on a cold Friday night. We were greeted promptly and seated at an empty grill station. Being around 5:30 the restaurant was very quiet save one other family eating at one of the other grill stations. But by the time we left about an hour later, the place was starting to fill up. Service was friendly from the server but the chef didn't look exceptionally enthusiastic about being there as he didn't really smile. The "show" that is put on is kinda corny but entertaining to our little guy. Hubs and I shared the steak and lobster. It comes with a good amount of vegetables and rice. We ordered off the kids menu for our little guy. Steak was grilled as requested and lobster was just okay. Our drinks were tasty - it was basically a virgin pina colada. This was my first time visiting this location since the downtown location moved to this spot and I must say that while it might not be my absolute favourite Japanese restaurant, I loved it. The dinner entertainment really entertained the first timers in the group, the food was good and the company was great! We sat and talked for quite some time over tea once our meal was complete (which admittedly is a bit unusual when compared to the average table), but this was in part due to having not connected with my dinner guests much since the pandemic. The food quality is top notch: I personally loved the fried udon noodles, shrimp, chicken, teriyaki beef, and of course the vegetables. The soup was so-so (probably the worst part of the meal). The tea was all right and staff were great about refilling. This is not the kind of restaurant you go to if you want to leave in a hurry, but the entertainment, the cooking artistry, and the crowd watching is fun. I had been in this space prior to it becoming Japanese Village and they've done a good job with the space. The restrooms are spacious and the tables are well maintained. This location is transit accessible and there is ample parking in the area (though on event nights it gets more challenging/expensive). I would definitely return again in the future and perhaps try other menu items. Not sure my kid would have the patience for this kind of place but it would definitely be entertaining! Tonight we didn't want the hype of the cooking show just wanted a nice Japanese supper. We sat in the lounge and read the " lounge" menu which has not much on it .. some tempura... One roll ( deep fried with salmon and tuna so it said) some sashimi.. tuna, salmon and yellowtail . And bento boxes and udon noodle bowls and rice bowls (???????) we got the vegetable tempura, shrimp tempura , assorted sashimi , salmon sashimi , some grilled shrimp skewer ( no S here ) the one and only roll listed on their menu . First received was the tempura ( and seriously the only good thing that we ate) fresh and delicious but for the vegetable tempura it only had zucchini, yam and onions) omg and then we got the sashimi ( fucking just nasty shit out there ) come on now JAPANESE village ... 14$ for 6 tiny pieces of salmon sashimi and I got assorted for 16$ for 3 pieces of tuna , 3 pieces of salmon 3 pieces of WHITE coloured yellowtail . It was FULL on white... I have never EVER had a piece of WHITE ( not see through ... just WHITE) yellowtail sashimi . It tasted not like any yellowtail I have ever had . I finished the whole thing because at the point I was starving . So big disappointment right there as me and my husband love fresh raw fish ( sashimi) after my husband almost puked his salmon out.. The one and only roll listed on he menu came to our table . I had a few pieces and wondered what the hell was inside ( on the menu it said tuna and salmon) I opened it up and then it was over cooked white fish... salmon cooked isn't white by the way . Asked the waitress and she said it's a blend (more question mark now ????) full on disappointment . Oh and I almost forgot the review the beef tataki . DO NOT SPEND 17$ on that Tasteless beef tataki. It's suposed to be with ponzu sauce ... I shoved my face to the bottom of my plate ... Okay like literally licked it TRYING for dear lord to try to Taste that 'ponzu ' sauce . I've never been more stressed out over a dining experience than I was at Japanese Village. It's very cool watching your food cooked in front of you, and our chef was very friendly. But knife tricks? I don't want knife tricks! Maybe I'm just a huge fraidy cat, but I spent entire evening going like this: . (OK, I realize you can't see what I'm doing right now, but just imagine me covering my eyes and cowering in the corner. Yup, just like that.) But all scariness aside, the food here is outstanding. The prices are a little high, but your meal includes rice, veggies, shrimp, mushrooms and bean sprouts on top of your order. I had the teriyaki beef which was definitely worth the price! We came here on a Tuesday night on a total whim, and the place was still hopping with lots of hip, downtown urbanites. I was impressed for sure. I've never been here for dinner but many times for lunch. The dinner menu is a little different from the lunch and a bit pricier but you do get way more food. I love the chicken teriyaki so it's usually my choice. For $25, you get chicken broth egg drop soup, a small salad with a dressing made with apples so it's a light dressing, stir-fried onions and zucchini, mushrooms, bean sprouts, the chicken and a bowl of white rice. They serve ginger sauce and steak sauce for dipping. Most people like to pour the steak sauce onto the rice, it is so delicious that you might want two bowls of rice! All the guests sit around the teppan table and watch the cook entertain you. They serve green tea once your food is cooked. If it's your birthday, you get to wear a hat and a japanese robe and they will sing in japanese and english. This place is worth a try! read more

I'm torn if I should give Japanese Village 3 or 4 stars. It was a Saturday evening shortly after 5 and we didn't have a reservation. They were able to accommodate 6 of us and the wait wasn't longer than 10 minutes. This was definitely a plus! We were seated around the grill and there was a family celebrating a birthday on the other side. It was great to see many little children enjoying the cooking and food. The menu is a little limited with chicken, beef, and shrimp. Most of us ordered the chicken for $25. The server took our order and brought out our drinks promptly. The chef puts on a little show and tries his best for an entertaining show. He cooked our vegetables first and we each received a bowl of rice to start. The chicken came next, along with a sample of shrimp. The chicken was tasty with it sauced up. The chef refills our sauces and the server was good to refill our drinks. The seating was a little tight with my with cart behind so make sure your purse isn't hanging in the way. The reason I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4 is because I have had teppanyaki elsewhere and that experience was more entertaining and the food quality better. This was another place on my wish list that I had such high hopes for. So many people told me about how entertainIng it was for a dinner. Basically dinner and a show for the price of dinner. Well I've been lied to. The chef was clumsy and not entertaining at all, sadly I couldn't hear a word he said over the fan. He spoke so softly it made it difficult to even hear how I wanted my steak cut. I ordered steak and shrimp. The steak was a terrible cut of meat, full of gristle and fat. When you only have chop sticks it makes it very difficult to enjoy and kind of meat if there is fat or gristle in it. The shrimp was tiny and tough because the chef over cooked it. He put the mushrooms on the plate to pair with the steak and literally it was two slices of mushrooms. Again so disappointing! My fiancée ordered teriyaki steak which less than half the cost of my steak and shrimp. Sadly she received double the food that I did. The bill shows up and it's $125! My goodness here I am with the bill that was so over priced it was stupid and then I'm still hungry. Plus I have a stomach ache from all the fat that my body ingested. I would never go back. So, I have been a big big fan of Japanese Village in Calgary for a long time & it's honestly one of my favourites behind the new Gyu-Kaku that opened about a year ago. I decided that me and a friend should go here before the Coldplay concert that night, because I wanted to see if it was the same. Reservations were way easier and not as annoying as in Calgary where they literally get mad at you if your party doesn't arrive all together and they don't make you call to confirm which is awesome and appreciated. My main issue came with the experience. In Calgary, they tell you incredibly corny and repetitive jokes but that's part of the experience. At this location, our chef told a joke or two but for the most part didn't really interact with the diners which is something I really like about JV Calgary. They don't even do an onion volcano which I have seen at literally every other teppanyaki restaurant except here. The food selection was a bit different and they had sushi which is absent in Calgary. The steak we had was really good. Also quite expensive. They even had a house beer which I thought was cool. Glad to see the famous steak sauce transcends the QE2 as well. You'll get a full belly & you won't be disappointed food wise but I feel having experienced the one in Calgary and Benihana in the states, there isn't as much of a show. read more

I hate to say this but this was not a great experience. We booked a party of 11 for lunch to bid a co-worker goodbye. When we arrived the restaurant was empty. It had a sad sense to it, like it had been forgotten. I know this chain was trendy before other Japanese restaurants came to town. The staff were extremely polite and seated us at a large Teppan table. What threw me off was there were no Teppan chefs at lunch and there were plenty of regular tables to accommodate us. It just felt weird sitting alone in this large open space at a Teppan table that was not going to be used. The lunch menu was not overly impressive. A couple rice dishes, soup, and an assorted sushi option. I ordered the Ten Don and gave my shrimp to a friend. The rice bowl did not come with any sauce and no sauce was offered. I did ask for the sesame sauce and that improved the meal. There is a lot of street parking at this location and the staff is wonderful. There is just something lacking in the food on the lunch menu. Maybe the dinners are better. I wouldn't choose to go to this restaurant but would eat there if it was a group decision. read more

We arrived in plenty of time for our reservation and were seated almost immediately so I was prepared to enjoy the meal. Our chef was not very personable nor entertaining. He cooked and served the table showing almost no humour and little to no talking. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and my companion ordered the teriyaki beef. Both were tough and therefore I did not eat all of my meal nor did my dining partner as had the same problem with her beef dish I had ordered these same dishes from Edo Japan not too long ago and must tell you that you get a superior quality of food for far less money. One of the great places to go for Japanese food downtown. They have multiple levels depending on whether you want a sit down dinner or to have everything grilled in front of you; this is usually what people go for as you get a show out of this. I like coming here for the experience. The chefs are extremely friendly, and they try to entertain your with corny jokes (it's not stand up comedy but it's still funny). This is a GREAT place to go to if you have lots of company. They occasionally try and throw food onto your plate or dipping sauce too, and you get a sense that they care about their food preparation. The only problem is that you may get seated to some rowdy people on the table, or people who just stare at you and make you feel awkward. I understand though that they want to serve as many people as possible, and sometimes they do not begin to serve you unless they have filled the table. This place can be a bit pricey, and you could get similar food for cheaper elsewhere (Edo), but you also get good entertainment and can see how your food is being prepared. read more

We all sat around around this table, and in the centre stood the chef, who was cooking our food in front of us. I rather enjoyed watching him flip dangerous knives around and tell funny jokes. (I didn't even have to fake laugh--he was actually funny!) I'm not really big on sushi, but I love most other Japanese foods, and this food was very good--I had the teriyaki chicken. Went for their lunch special on a Thursday. Ordered before 12:10pm and was told at 12:40pm that a group had ordered sushi and it's done by hand which is why our lunch was late. We asked to pay right away and just have our food brought with packing so we can take it to go. They brought our the soup in bowls at 12:45 and we asked again for it to be packed as one of our group members had to get back and open the office at 1pm. At 12:55 she finally got her To Go containers and ran out. The rest of us were still waiting for our containers and we had already paid. The waitress served the other tables and took payments and brought one more container after. And then there were two of us left. At 1pm we asked again for containers as we had been for the last 20 minutes and I was told they don't have any left. We waited for 20 minutes only to be told that the food we got late could not be packed. So we had to leave with our lunch mostly uneaten because it took them 45 minutes to give us soup and tempura and then didn't have any containers for us to take it away in. They could have given us the soup 30 minutes earlier and just packed the tempura with some rice for us to take away. It would have been a simple fix that we would have been happy with. Instead, they gave us the poorest service I've seen in awhile with absolutely no offer of a discount or future benefit. What was embarrassing is that we had been talking about how fast and great the service here was and how certain we were that our receptionist could join us because she would make it back with time to spare. Japanese Village is awesome because it's dinner and a show - your dinner is the show! This place is great for groups who are going out for a birthday dinner because then you can have an entire table (and chef) to yourselves. You get to sit and watch as your own personal chef prepares food for you in front of your very eyes! It's fun! Our chef even started a game with one of our friends and would randomly throw food in his direction while he was cooking to see if my friend could catch it in his mouth. It was a really good time. And its not just fun to watch, it tastes great too! All of the food was really good (I stole some bites off of other people's plates - all friends though, no strangers). I had to find a place for a Christmas party for my store that would fit my budget of $35 per person. Another associate and myself stumbled upon the group menu provided by Japanese Village (http://www.digitalmarketingbox.com/webtool/boxdata/2258/images/group_menu.pdf). We saw the option of the $33 meal which included tax and gratuity, and we made a reservation a couple of weeks in advance for a group of 18 specifically requesting this group menu. When I arrived at the restaurant and was seated, I noticed that the regular menus were placed on the table settings. In order to avoid any confusion with my staff, I immediately pulled the hostess aside and told her that we had requested the group menu with our reservation. She told us that there was no record of that. She ran to the back and said she had to call the other Japanese Village location to confirm. After 15 minutes of her running back and forth and obviously not getting an answer, the manager finally came to speak with me. I told her we were on a budget and that is specifically why I requested the group menu, because it included tax and gratuity. She said that the menu did not include gratuity, but she could do it for $35 a plate. I told her that's not what the website said, but to avoid any issues I just agreed and decided I would pay for the employee's fountain drinks out of my own pocket. After she left the table I proceeded to pull the menu up on my phone to confirm I was correct, and I was. I decided I could fight about this later. The dining experience was good, although we were not offered any green tea which the menu said was complimentary. Upon getting the bills, it turns out that the meal was $33, and not $35 as the manager offered me. That being said, I feel like my dining experience was sort of ruined because they made such a big deal out of this group menu, rather than just fixing it as soon as I walked in - the customer service was a bit lacking in that department. read more

It is all about the chef coming out and making everything right in front of you and putting on a show. One thing I love here is the sesame sauce, I can never get enough. There were 2 chefs entertaining us and one was clearly out doing the other. The lesser skilled chef got upset and left. We thought that was pretty lame. He was such a poor sport. But hey, hearing the sizzling of the food and the first bite. It was all very tasty to the last bite. Dessert usually comes with the meal, but you may need to ask for it. They don't really give it voluntarily even though you have spent $30 for the meal and $5 for drinks and $6 for appetizers. I have been coming to Japanese Village for over 20 years and I still love it. Having your food cooked right in front of you is fun - almost like dinner and a show. And it is always fresh and plentiful. The sesame steak sauce is addictive, and luckily the restaurant knows this and sells bottles of the sauce that you can take home if you try to recreate the experience at home (which honestly is never as good). The meals are filling as they come with salad, soup, your main course, vegetables, rice (which you can have as much of as you like), and green tea. At first the meal may seem quite expensive, but if you consider how much you get, it isn't overly pricey. If you do want to add an extra appetizer, the tempura is very good and so are the sushi rolls (though I've only tried a few different varieties). There is also an impressive drinks menu that includes numerous Japanese beers and cocktails. My favourite is the cherry blossom, which is great if you enjoy a sweet drink. Staff are always very helpful and courteous, eager to help. If you go on a weeknight or for lunch, no reservation is likely needed. However, if you are going on a Friday or Saturday night, it is best to make a reservation or at least call ahead to see if they have a table. read more

I thought I would post our experience with this restaurant. We never did get a chance to eat here as the service was dreadful. We went to the downtown location. First, I called their number to make reservations and there was no answer. I left a message with our reservation and the time we would be there, and asked them to please call me back to confirm it. No return phonecall. On the way there we again called twice to confirm, or at least make a reservation. Again, no answer. We arrived at the restaurant around 7pm. It was not even half full. We stood in the front waiting to talk to someone to see if they had got our message for our reservation, or if we could be seated. We waited, and waited, and waited...walked into both sides of the restaurant, looked around, waited in the front some more for what seemed to be an eternity. Completely being ignored by the staff that saw us, and the non-existent attendant up front. We actually called the restaurant from inside their front waiting area to ask if we could be seated, lol. That is how bad the service was. They actually answered the phone!! (YAY!) and the attendant came to the front and said that we could not eat there as they were fully reserved and she did not get our reservation. We left, and my friend said "I will never step foot in this place again" and I agree with her. We went to Shogun on 121st and it was a positive experience with good food, good SERVICE, and for 1/2 the price as Japanese Village. If these people actually answered their phone none of this would have happened. I seldom eat In Japanese restaurants to avoid disappointment because I'm half Japanese & can cook more authentic stuff than the restaurants in NA serve but since we're in town, my husband & I thought we'd try it. Food Quality: It was ok, nothing spectacular (even to a low standard expectation). If you`ve tried authentic Japanese food, you may even say this is horrible but then again we`re in North America. Limited variation in the menu as well. Price: Too high for the quality. $92 for 3 bento boxes, pot of tea & 1 sushi roll is too much. Even more expensive than Tokyo. Food Portion: Typical. Ambience: This is where your money goes to, not the quality of food. Experience: We stayed in the lounge bcoz we didn't want teppanyaki. We ordered a bento box for my 2 boys to share & asked for cutlery/fork since they are not so used to chopsticks yet. We had to ask for it 3x to 2 diff servers. Over half an hour later, I had to get up & look & get forks myself because they never brought it). The bento came w Chinese egg soup instead of miso soup. This is why it's hard to eat in a Japanese rest run by Chinese (no offense). The servers were pleasant & respectful & we didn't have to wait too long for our food (except for the cutlery). Overall, it was ok experience. Even if I live here in Edmonton, I most likely WILL NOT go back to eat here, just not worth the money. read more

I like the community dining experience, but the seats are too close together. No elbow room for eating. Dinner is way too much more money than lunch, but the lunch menu is awful, so dinner it has to be. They have ONE dessert; cake from some CHINESE bakery that they serve slices out of, for those who ask - don't ask. This is the worst value I have had in town, but that's not to say the food isn't okay. Perhaps people go here for the show they put up juggling their utensils. It is quite a mockery. I believe in giving people a chance and everyone can have a bad day from time to time. It gets 2 stars because they have done better! My office (14 people) came here for a 'festive lunch' right before Christmas. I'm slowly catching up on some Yelp reviews. Sorry! Our reservation was for 1pm, the majority of our group was present by 1:05. There seemed to be a bit of confusion on where we would be seated for teppan-yaki service. Maybe it was the language barrier, many of the staff seemed like English was a second language, but they were trying to seat 14 people around 1 teppan station that really seats 8. By the time we all had it figured out, taking up two stations...they only wanted us to use 14 chairs at the tables. Not sure how we would have used more...there were only 14 bodies. Did they want 2 more random strangers to join our group? The service was very slow. It took more than 15 minutes once we were seated to even get glasses of water/tea served. After the server took our drink orders, it was still 10 minutes until they were received. When they brought the drinks she came to take our food orders, but unfortunately she had not given half of our group a menu. Once our chef came, things progressed a lot quicker. I sat beside the vegetarian in our group and it seemed like a battle for them to prepare a vegetarian dish. Upon request, they can prepare the teppan-yaki with tofu. There were 4 pieces the size of dice. He asked for extra and they seemed to make a big deal out of it. We said we'd pay. The food was good, and most of the staff were pleased. The biggest downfall was the length of time it took to get in and out. In all, it was about 1 hour 45 minutes to get through and the chef doesn't really 'entertain' like they do for dinner service. This place is great you get dinner and a show at once. The food is priced decently for the amount you get. You also get someone interacting you for most of the meal. The thing I love about this place is I worked in a nightclub/lounge here called Mezza Luna about 7 years ago and seeing what they did with the decor it amazes me. Good atmosphere, ok food. The shrimp were actually very good. The chicken is run of the mill teriyaki flavour, not bad (though not a long way from Edo or Tokyo Express). The steak is a pretty big disappointment, it isn't very flavourful and was tough. Was with a group of eight people and this seemed to be the consensus. The chef we had was very friendly. I really enjoy going to Japanese Village. Food is always great tasting, and having it prepared in front of you is entertaining. It's a place you need to go to with a large group, and prices start at $22 for entrees. read more
