This restaurant was a few blocks from my hotel so I decided to have a light sushi dinner. For my visit, I ordered the salmon sashimi, blue fin toro belly, seared salmon belly, and fresh shrimp. I also ordered a salmon avocado hand roll, but they gave me the maki roll instead and asked if I wouldn't mind eating it. I didn't want to make a fuss since it was essentially the same ingredients, just rolled differently. You'd think they would take it off my bill, but they didn't. I wasn't particularly fond of the server, who took away the menu after I ordered the salmon, toro and salmon belly, even though I said I will order more items as I go along. She gave me a little attitude when I asked to see the menu to order additional items and then she messed up my order. There was no apology, only "do you mind just eating this?" She ordered an eel avocado and California Maki. The server asked me how many rolls she wanted, I said 2. They ended up bringing her 2 California Maki, but we did inform her this was incorrect. She began to say I told her 2 California but after my stare, she took it back to the kitchen and returned with her correct order. While waiting for our food, I looked on yelp and found a picture of shrimp shumai someone posted for this business. I tried to order it but the server said they don't sell that. I'm literally never in FiDi, but I was here for lunch with a friend, and Mikado is so pleasantly the perfect place to catch up with someone. The interior is so beautiful and serene-- it almost doesn't even feel like you're in the thick of FiDi. I ordered one of their lunch specials, which came with a roll of my choice and a chicken teriyaki entree. I chose the shrimp tempura roll, which came out insanely fast. It was a good size and tasted very fresh. I liked the chicken teriyaki, but it wasn't the best. It seemed somewhat hastily put together. It looked like the chicken was put on the plate plain and then drenched in sauce after being plated. It tasted fine enough, but I would have liked to have some more care put into it. I've ordered from this spot's Queens location before, so I was excited to check out their Wall Street branch. I came by on a Friday evening, and the place was packed because of some private parties, so I grabbed a bar seat. Food: 3/5 I ordered the hand roll set and added extras like wagyu, uni, eel avocado, salmon, and scallop. Everything came out fast, but honestly, the quality was just okay for $50 bill. The wagyu, for example, was almost blue rare, which I personally don't mind -- but the texture was tough, almost like it was near the tendon rather than the fillet. For the price, I expected better. Also, they were out of one of the drinks I wanted because of the earlier party, which was a bit of a letdown. Overall, I think the Queens location has slightly better quality and more variety on the menu. Service: 4/5 The staff was quick and kind, no complaints there. My only small gripe was that someone set my water cup (after filling it water) directly on my plate instead of the table -- a little odd, but no big deal. It was a busy night, so I get it. Overall: 3.5/5 I probably wouldn't go back to this particular location, but it was still interesting to compare how they run things across branches. Thanks to Instagram, I found out that Mikado is actually about a 12 minute walk from my office building. Sweet. I made plans with a coworker to try them out for lunch on a random Wednesday. We walked in around 12pm and was able to snag a table for 2. They run a lunch menu from 11:00am - 3:30pm daily - 2 rolls for $13, 3 rolls for $17, and 4 rolls for $20 with a miso soup or salad. This works for maki or hand rolls, your choice. I had the 3 maki rolls, which comes with 4 pieces of maki each roll type. I picked the Salmon Avocado, Spicy Salmon, and Scallop Yuzu (+$2). My coworker had 3 hand rolls. I think the handrolls, while messier, might be the better deal because her rolls were definitely had more fish than mine did. Food was good, service was quick. We used the online system to book a dinner reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. There are tables and booths in the front and a bar towards the back. The interior decor is nice, and there are greenery used to separate some tables and provide a little privacy. However, after being seated for 15 minutes, no one had been by the table to even bring water or menus. It took us waving down a server from a different area before someone assigned to our section came to take our order. The green tea came served in a plastic bottle. If you are familiar with the brand that was listed on the menu that may have been clear, but without recognizing that this is a pre-packaged brand I was inadvertently expecting real brewed green tea. Overall the prices seemed good, like edamame for $5 which was a good size to split as an appetizer, but then it turned out the rolls ($7 to $8) were only half-sized with only 4 pieces per order. The crispy rice ($14 for 3 pieces) were fairly gummy and would not recommend. Two of the rolls in our order were also incorrect to what we actually ordered. We were fine with the ingredients so did no send it back, but could see on the bill after the meal that the server input the wrong order (and not the kitchen making a mistake). Service was a little uncoordinated at times, had to ask for someone to take our order and they brought the wrong dish, and wrong check. Other than that the staff were nice and very diligent about refilling water cups. We enjoyed the kaizen don bowl, with nicely sized cubes of salmon, tuna, egg, cucumber. The miso cod was nicely cooked but the flavor was overwhelmed with mustard over the top. Crispy rice trio was tasty, but the rice squares were too large which made it hard to eat.
