Came to Midway Optometry for an initial exam with Dr. Tang and I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone in need of an optometrist. Poor and dishonest patient care what they did to me!! I regret coming to Midway Optometry. I had the worst experience ever that it made me cry!! Please DO NOT come here if you want to get check for Glaucoma. I was told by lasik eye surgeon I have Pigment dispersion syndrome that can cause glaucoma so that freak me OUT. I googled ophthalmologist around my area and Midway Optometry came up they had a lot of good reviews. I called on 2/23/23 and told the girl on the phone about my situation and that I wanted to get check for Glaucoma. The girl on the phone told me they do check for Glaucoma she took my information and told me they did take my insurance and she scheduled me to see Dr. Steven Giang. When I arrived for my appointment on 3/3/23 they had me fill out my information on a tablet. Once o was done one of the girls took me back. She did some eye testing and one of their machines wasn't working. I felt like everything was so fast and I didn't see her clean the equipment before using it. Then she asked me for the eye dilating if I wanted to do digital retinal imaging that would cost me $50 dollars or eye drops that my insurance covers it. I told her eye drops was okay with me. She then took me back with Dr. Steven Giang. He asked me for the reason I was there and once again I told him my story and told him I wanted to get check for Glaucoma. He then did they eye exam SO FAST and told me "There that's your prescription". The prescription was still blurry. I was not going to let this doctor dilate my eyes after that horrible eye exam experience. He did NOT do his JOB RIGHT! I have a SCAR ON MY RIGHT EYE and he didn't say anything about that. He couldn't even tell me if I had pigment dispersion so disappointed I wanted to get up and leave!! Dr. Steve Giang told me they DID NOT take my insurance and asked me to show him my insurance card then told me it would cost me $300 dollars!!! Like WTF that's the whole reason for my visit. He then said he would refer me out to another optometrist that takes my insurance to check for glaucoma. It seemed to me that he was in a hurry to get out of the office. I am so upset it made me cry! They should of been honest and told me my insurance didn't cover the test for glaucoma. Instead they waisted my time and charged my insurance $245 dollars for basically not doing anything. I still have to see another Ophthalmologist that does care for their patients and actually listens and takes their time when doing an eye exam. This is Poor/ dishonest patient care! !! read more

I called several optometrists trying to find one that made color blind prescription glasses. Midway Optometry said they did but I would have to bring in my prescription and pay $75.00 for a color-blind test. I came in and took the test which was done by the optometrist (great guy and very nice). When I agreed to order the glasses, I was told they don't do bifocal prescription glasses, only single lens prescriptions. Now I'm out $75.00 and no glasses. Maybe I should have been clearer on my choice for bifocals but usually prescription glasses come in all kinds of different ways. read more

The exam was not standard for my daughter...she noticed a discrepancy in how they did her exam from our usual optometrist and it seemed like a poorly trained office staff member was conducting part of her exam. this resulted in an incorrect prescription. When I asked for a refund for the contacts they had ordered for her they refused to do so and instead reordered the contacts with the updated prescription we got from our usual optometrist THEN they charged more for this updated prescription and accidentally sent us two boxes for the left eye, were unwilling to provide a shipping label and we had to go back to their office to return the second box or they would charge us for this box that we did not order. Such a nightmare. definitely would not recommen. read more

My experience at Midway Optometry was a positive one overall. From my exam to finding prescription glasses. Dr. Matthews clearly showed he is in the right field. He took his time to ensure that he thoroughly explained each step of the process and what he was looking for. He explained things using easy to understand verbiage. I was very impressed with him compared to my past optometrist that I've been too over the last 10 years. When you find someone in a field that loves what they do, has tremendous competence in their role, and takes interest in their clients/patience, you're in the right location! The staff was very friendly and willing to assist. One of the reasons I chose this office was they carried a brand of frames I was interested in. I shared with the staff the name and model number of the frame and they were able to share that it was a frame that's been discontinued. They went above and beyond to find if their vendor had them still in stock and brought them in the office for me to try on. If you have your eye on a specific frame in mind, give them a call and see if they can get it in stock. They'll take care of you! read more

This was my first eye exam since elementary school- and long over due! I've just ignored the fact that I've needed glasses for years ! I finally decided enough was enough and utilized my vision insurance- not knowing how to shop for optometrist, I just picked out a name on their network list. I am simply blessed that I found this place!! The entire experience was not only exceptional, but fun! And I learned so much! I wish I remembered all the assistants names, but they were all so kind, patient with my questions and helping me pick out glasses! It was like my best friends were there walking me through the process! Dr. Matthews was extremely knowledgeable and has a keen ability to explain everything there is to know about eye health and vision. He has such a cool story and you can tell he loves serving people with his passion for vision care! My first visit was actually in December and my glasses arrived within a week or two after. Picking up glasses were quick and efficient, I did wait outside while they grabbed my glasses per there Covid protocol- which I didn't mind! The shop is small, and they are fully invested in taking extra care that the folks with appointments have plenty of distance inside! They only let in 1-2 people at a time- spray your hands, and take temps at the door. While trying on glasses they wipe down each pair that you touch and are always cleaning after each place that is sat in or touched. I came back today to get an exam for contact lenses. I was treated with the same warmth and kindness as the first visit. Dr Mathews showed extreme patience while teaching me how to put in and take out the contact lenses, and sent me home with some samples to get a feel for them, and scheduled a follow up appointment in a few days. While there today, I brought up an issue that I had with my first pair of glasses. The lenses were perfect, I can not believe I've been going for so many years without seeing how vivid and crisp the real world is! I have missed so many details, I'm obsessed with looking at the sky at night and actually seeing stars!! And the sunsets, just wow!!! Sorry-just getting excited about my no found sight!!!! So - I had an issue with the design of the glasses, after explaining my problem, Dr Matthews without hesitation asked me to pick out a different pair to exchange. This spoke volumes to me as all sales are final. I returned up front to pick out different glasses, and the ladies were so beyond helpful in picking out a different pair! So much fun, I left with 2 pairs!! Long story short- I had a lovely experience every step of the way and highly recommend Midway Optometry!!! read more

Dr. Michael Matthews is an incredible optometrist. This man changed my quality of life! My review is long over due - I was new to the San Diego area so when my dog destroyed my glasses I was sent his way by a referral from a coworker. His office is tucked away behind a main street. Dr. Matthews is professional, welcoming and he is unparalleled in his craft. I came in wearing glasses and after examining me he suggested one contact lense for one of my eyes. I was very reluctant given that I have always worn glasses, for both eyes. He changed my life when I put in that one contact lense. I could see like never before. Every image in his office became crisp, it was like seeing in HD. I didn't know how bad my eye sight was or that I was diagnosed incorrectly my entire life. (I was bewildered and very emotional upon seeing this clearly for the first time that I teared up in his examining chair). Today, when I put on my one contact in the morning it's like taking a fresh breath. I don't have headaches like I used to and I can focus more easily. I am forever grateful for finding Dr. Matthews. I can't say enough great things about Dr. Matthews and this practice! I have been to a few optometrists in my life and have always been told I have 20/20 vision and I don't need glasses. However, I always felt like something was off. It wasn't until I went to Dr. Matthews that I found out I had a different problem which renders my eyesight blurry. He thoroughly tested my eyes, made sure my prescription was perfect, and set me up with glasses. He also took the time to talk to/get to know me to build a great doctor/patient relationship. He's very knowledgeable and breaks things down in a way that someone without a PhD in Vision Science can understand. The two ladies in the office were very friendly and accommodating as well. They were excited about their job and wanting to assist. I've been to places where I've felt like I was just a number and the customer service lacked significantly. We got the prescription from his doctor, but were unable to find an office that carried the lenses he needed. Upon calling this office, Mayra was so professional and accommodating. She invited my husband to stop by their office and although they didn't have the box of lenses to sell to us, she had a trial pair in the brand and prescription that my husband needed. Absolutely AMAZING experience!!! This morning, as I was cleaning my glasses, the cheap Warby Parker's I had decided to snap right in half!! I laughed at the fact that my cheap pair didn't last. But was thankful I had already made an appointment at LensCrafters for that morning to get a new prescription. I get to Crafters and they're terrible because even though they set up an appointment for me they didn't check before hand to see if they actually took my insurance. So here I am thinking they take VSP because they said they did. But they failed to mention that they were out of network and I apparently needed to be in network.... whatever that really means... So I'm about to be in tears... because I'm emotional sometimes for stupid reasons I can't control haha... and decide to leave and figure out who took my insurance so it wouldn't be so expensive for some glasses!! After about my 5th call to an optometrist trying to make an appointment for today so I could get to work and see.. I get on the phone with Dawn.. at first it looked as tho they also didn't take my insurance. So I called my insurance and figured it out.. haha called Midway optometry back because I saw that my insurance did cover it and OMG!! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Not only are they just the sweetest people.. the technology that goes into mapping out your eyes is absolutely amazing.. Dr. Matthews really helped out a girl in need. I asked for an emergency pair of contacts so I could see and he hooked me up with a set of monthly's!! First time actually wearing contacts! But man was it a life saver for me tonight at work!! He found a cheapy pair of frames that he was able to put my old lenses into so I could have a back up pair!! And for only $50!! Whaaaat!!! I have to say I walked out of there so stoked on my new lenses and my spares!!! Plus knowing that there's good people in the world that knew just how to make my day!!! Dr. Matthews and his team were very professional and welcoming. It was my first visit to his office and I felt like family from the moment I walked in. Shelby helped me through so many cool and fun eye tests, it's been a few years since I had an eye exam and was blown away by how much has changed. It was a fun experience, some of them felt like a game! Anyway she explained each one and made me feel super comfortable with all of them. Next I was off to see the Doctor and he was able to walk me through the results of each test, what they meant and he was even able to tell I was farsighted before I even sat in his exam chair. He gave me some tips and pointers to help me with my eyes and even gave me a coupon for proper eye hygiene (who knew?!)
