Grilled turkey, fries and coleslaw. This picture looks tiny as there was quite a bit of food here and it was great.

The desk clerk at our hotel recommended Midway. We would not have found it otherwise and likely not visited were it not for his recommendation. Midway was very comfortable, clean, and pleasant. The food other diners had, especially breakfast items, looked terrific. We both had grilled turkey sandwiches and they were great. Amanda was super friendly and checked on us regularly and we had a light meal that lasted us throughout the day. When we revisit Rehoboth, we plan to go back and hope to see Amanda again. Thanks!

    Smothered Steak (Special)

On Friday evening, the Mrs. and I had dinner at the Midway Cafe. Our last visit was about four months ago. The place was not crowded and it seemed that it was mostly locals. After we sat, the waitress (very pleasant and friendly) took our orders. We ordered the specials -- Steak and Shrimp for the Mrs. and I had the Smothered Steak (Provolone, peppers, onions and mushrooms). Both of us had the mashed potatoes for the sides. Overall, the food was good but the homemade Chicken Noodle soup was OUTSTANDING! In fact, if we had known it was so good, we would have ordered a couple of bowls for dinner -- that is how good it was.

A week ago we drove by Midway Plaza and noticed the old restaurant that had been slowly fading away due to the numerous reports of erratic and eccentric abuse was out; nothing Preshy here anymore... Granted some found the experience charming; it must have had some draw to last 14 odd years but today I witnessed real cold water being served without protest or insult; a sea change has occurred. In that spot you will now find the Midway Café at 18585 Coastal Highway, it is the same strip mall as 1776 Steakhouse however, this spot is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The slogan is "Best taste in Rehoboth". I'm questioning what segment of cuisine they might best be known for. In one local Facebook group someone mentioned they were a "Greek" place; everyone was excited at this for it is harder to find in the area. Reading the establishment's Facebook page, I note the first review used the term "Mediterranean items", a broader description. However as I peruse the menu, I'm struck with more a feel of "Jersey Diner" as a food format. They have a bit of everything. Even a few item from Preshy's are on the menu so folks who loved food from "back in the day" only have to ask for a side salad of abuse and they might feel right at home! I came in today early afternoon, past the lunch rush so A J the new owner was kind enough to sit with me as I had a Pastrami Reuben with French fries and Ice Tea. A J told me he does not make his own Pastrami but I sure like his supplier for it has a nice amount of smokiness that when not overpowering, hits you with a bit of authority. I should have gotten a side view photo to show the volume of the sandwich. It was not Rosenfeld's in overstuffed size but it was $3.75 less in cost and if I'm reading Rosenfeld's menu right, they don't provide you fries or slaw. The fries were standard matchstick done fine. A J encouraged me to try the slaw as he seemed very proud of it but I'm just not a fan so someone else will have to review it. A J told me his family has had at least 10 restaurants; he's has had 5. One was in Greenwood, one Dover and Lyme, CT. I forgot to ask where the others were. This is the only one he's operating today. He lives locally in Long Neck but we talked houses so I'm thinking he is shopping. During our conversation the man must have jumped up a few dozen times to attend to customers at the counter behind him, to meet new folks coming in or other needs elsewhere. This is a nice guy with good customer service skills and he is passionate about what he's got going on. Glance over his Facebook page to see lots of other food porn and you can see the enthusiasm starting around May 18th as they opened.

Eggs and hash browns barely cooked, like the potatoes were almost raw. The sausage was way overcooked.

A new breakfast place for us during our Rehoboth stays. It's a modern, friendly atmosphere. We…read morehad to wait about 10 minutes for a table on a mid-June Saturday morning. Not bad. We each had a veggie omelette, one with egg whites and no cheese and the other with Swiss. The omelette comes with a portion of potatoes (they were fine), a small salad (nice touch, with a decent vinaigrette) and bread. We got English muffin ($1 extra) with one and an everything bagel ($2 extra - no cream cheese) with the other. The omelette was large, with good portion of filling, including spinach and tomato. I don't know if they use an especially good Swiss cheese, but it "popped". The coffee here (Segafredo) was really good. A medium blend, but flavorful and rich. I really enjoyed the coffee and plan to buy some when I get home. The service here is very good. There's one place we go to once whenever we visit Rehoboth, both because it's solid and for nostalgia (Robin Hood). That will remain our first place. But I think we found our place for the second breakfast. It's a bit more expensive than some (by a couple of dollars), but the portions are large, the food is good and the coffee is great.

We were happily greeted by Matt the host who is always so pleasant and accommodating! This was followed by the wonderful service by Emilia. Additionally, Cristian who remembered I liked jalapeños which they previously they did not carry but now do. He let me know and quickly got me some. That's amazing!! Who does that? They do as they really care about their customers and it shows. Just like Server Alex who is so friendly and came over to check on us! If you haven't tried Breakfast Guru you are missing a fantastic breakfast spot!!

But the menu is vast with delicious options that you really cannot go wrong with any of it. Three egg omelettes, big salads, and big pieces of French toast. No matter what you get, you will be sure to walk out satisfied. Like with anything else in the Rehobeth Beach area, it opens early and closes early, and parking can be a nightmare if you wait too long to eat here. Thankfully it was not too bad when I went as it is currently offseason. That does not detract the locals from coming for a post church meal. This place definitely checks all the boxes. The cute coastal interior is something I liked as well. Sometimes a little break from the norm does good.

We arrived on a Sunday morning around 11am and it was packed! I mean we could barely find parking. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table of 4. There is no waiting area - you are just cramped up front in a small area. It was very packed but they did have a large party there. I had the pancakes with strawberries and bacon and apple juice. A friend got the breakfast tacos and didn't like it at all. Two other friends got grits with their meals and said they had to be doctored up a bit. One thing I didn't care for was that the food was all bought out at different times. Our waiter was nice but not overly friendly. I would suggest checking it out for yourself.

The line wasn't out the door, but it was busy. I ordered a chai latte and the Rise Up breakfast burrito. My burrito came out in about 10 minutes, but my chai latte took 30 minutes. I understand it's peak season at a beach resort and staffing can be a challenge, but if an establishment cannot provide reasonable timing for orders, they should limit the number of customers they take at once. They continued accepting orders despite clearly being unable to keep up. The gentleman behind me waited 25 minutes with his wife and three children before leaving after paying because he said the wait was "insane," and I agree. For $17.25 for a coffee and a breakfast burrito, the experience was not worth it. Highly recommend avoiding this location during the season. Very disappointed. They can do better.
