Oh my! What a bust. We love diners, and this one looks like a winner, but it was a dismal experience and expensive to boot! Meatloaf was thrown on the plate and seemed to have beans in it, a first for me. However, it was better than the turkey dinner, which also appeared to have been tossed on the plate from a distance. The server was not into it. She didn't know the vegetable nor was she interested in finding out. She eschewed trays and walked each meal out separately. (Not bad for a table of two, but agony for the table of 6.) Don't waste your time nor your money. It was the worst meal of our trip. read more

Cozy, classic, comfort food. Small town vibes, cozy atmosphere, basic dishes done well and great hospitality shown by the workers. A retro spot that had the locals loving it! This is one of, if not the oldest eatery in Middleburgh and the food will never blow your socks off however, it's comfort food done well and that's all you can ask for. We stopped back in for another go at breakfast (and that great coffee). This time we found the grub to be better as we laid the smack down on: A veggie omelet, rye toast and home fries. On this visit, the omelet was stuffed to the max, nicely golden on the outside, with cheese oozing out the sides. As for me? Chocolate chip pancakes which were, as I had hoped, so much better than the rolled pancakes on our last visit. Filled with gooey, bittersweet chocolate, these pancakes were top notch. It's a diner. I brought my granddaughter. We ordered two things. Her Belgian waffle was overdone and hard, possibly made with traditional mix, which is not Belgian. Just came with an old bottle of syrup. I had mashed potatoes. Turkey gravy was terrible, but potatoes were real! Waitress was friendly and not fake or else this would have been a two star review. They have been there for a very long time under different management, it's great to have breakfast there service is slightly slow usually there's only one waitress on a busy day maybe two. Just darn good food. Breakfast served all day. The bacon omelette was beyond delicious. My husband tried the special: haddock with a salad, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. Went there for breakfast. Got the special...a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. It was good, $5. The potatoes were mushy, so I'd ask for crispy. Apparently you have to ask for that now a days. Just wanted to relate a little story. Back in the '70s, my dad would pile us all into the station wagon every summer and we would make the 340 mile trip from Long Island to my grandparents in Watertown - of course the dog traveling with us and no A/C. Anyhow, my Dad would bypass the Thruway to save a few bucks on tolls, and we would stop for lunch here. The awfulness of the food soon became a family legend, even 20 years after any of us had eaten there. Guess we were downstate snobs after all. Anyway, I am sure it's changed hands countless times since. My wife and I have stopped there a couple of times, in recent years, and the food was fine. Service was great, and the placed oozed of back roads charm, with the kind of folksy down-to-earth staff you'd expect in a town like Middleburgh. Sorry, but I don't remember a lot of specifics about the actual food. Funny thing is, if it had been that good 40 years ago, it might not have been so fun to remember. Don't be put off. A real classic NY (middle America?) diner. No frills. No chrome. Run by locals. We ended up seated in our own room (to the right). 1950s decor and one might harshly suggest that it hasn't changed since the 50s/. However, the food is GOOD. I won't say great as it is a diner. You get what you pay for. Ridiculous large portions and my wife and 2 children were all well satisfied. Better than the diners on Long Island, which is saying something. Staff were pleasant, professional, and just plain nice ! Place was full (FULL) of older folk, which is a sign. My omelette (and I've had a few) was very tasty. All the dihes we had were well made and fresh. Just solid cooking. I recommend it highly. My wife was skeptical but was also impressed by the food. Went there August 2012. Go stroll up the great Vroman's Nose after. Easy hike and splendid views of the Schoharie Valley (under water during hurricane Irene). Good fruit picking there. read more

My wife and I stop there on Sunday mornings when heading home. The food is great and portions are large. Shirley, the waitress is great and very attentive.
