What can be improved? In a word, everything. It took an hour and a half to get our food. Bangers and mash and cottage pie had instant potatoes. What respectable Irish restaurant serves instant potatoes? The gravy tastes like it came out of a packet or a can. The bangers were dry and clearly overcooked. If I wasn't famished waiting to eat, I would have left it. Salads came out after the entrees. I can definitively say this is the worst Irish meal I've ever had. read more

Amazing service- literally the best and funny waitress who gave great recommendations to our group. Nice open seating areas. We went for lunch on a Monday after visiting Howe caverns nearby. It was not too busy. And it wasn't too loud in the restaurant either. Filled with some great nostalgia as decorations. We had the pistachio martini which was very nice, onion rings were fantastic especially with the sauce. Now I was excited there was beer battered fish. But it was not the greatest to me. Too greasy and lacked flavor. But it could be someone else's cup of tea. All the other dishes at the table looked fantastic and everyone enjoyed what they got. read more

If you haven't been to Chieftans is the past couple of months, you are missing out. They have a new Chef and I can tell you he/she is fantastic. My husband and I eat out a lot in the Cobleskill/Schoharie area. By far, this is THE BEST CHEF in town. The food is fantastic. Try any of the specials, they're all delicious! Everything is so fresh and tasty. I wish I thought to take photos but I was too interested in eating. I had a delightful tomato bisque soup that was so yummy in my tummy. A tender buttery steak with to-die-for parmesan risotto and a fresh vegetable medley. Oh, soooo good. Nice stiff drinks! The wait staff is also awesome. Quick and friendly hostess, waitress and bus service. Everyone is on top of their game. We've been here many times for dinner and we've never experienced any of the service issues described by a couple of the other reviews below. read more

Decore and atmosphere is very cool rustic/antique style. It is good for groups (larger tables), as well as some intimate side cubbies. The music, if any, is low and doesn't interfere with conversation. The portions are generous and the food, though basic fair, is of solid quality. I had the fish and chips (cod) with fries, and sampled the onion rings, as well a jalapeño poppers with raspberry sauce. These were all satisfying. This place continues to underwhelm. The food is always just okay to good. Never great, never spectacular, never delicious. On our most recent visit, however, it was the service that was horrible. We didn't get the server that we often have, but we were willing to give a different server a chance. She. Was. Horrible. It took more than 15 minutes to get our soup and salad! My husband had to flag down the hostess to ask for a refill on my water, TWICE. The server never asked if I would like a refill and my meal was buffalo chicken!! As a matter of fact she never asked me anything, only my husband. "How's your meal?". "Would you like another drink (twice)?". "Do you need a carry out container?". All directed at only him. Then, to top it all off, she didn't come back to the table for a solid 10 minutes once we got our containers. She had us, one table that needed their order taken and a third table that was still looking at menus and she was flustered. Once we finally did see her she asked if we wanted anything else, again speaking directly to my husband! He said "Just the check, please." And here comes the best part, we watched her get drinks for her third table, take orders at the second table and walk by us at least six times. We waited nearly 15 minutes for her to bring the check. It was ridiculous. As I said, the food was good, at best. The service horrendous. Usually the food is nothing to write home about but the service is good. This visit was just BAD. We live less than a mile from this restaurant and still only go 2-3 times a year. That number will go down even more now. read more

Easy place to sit at the bar and grab a bite in Cobleskill. We saw a few families with kids dine in the seated dining area. Menu has a lot of options. It isn't vegetarian friendly, but they seem accommodating and can probably whip something up without meat - like a vegetable and cheese quesadilla. Servers were friendly and attentive. Great service, friendly staff, and good food. Stopped by on a chilly winter afternoon. Wasn't sure if the parking lot for the restaurant. Asked some folks we passed us. They said yes and that the we made a good choice as the food was very good. We enjoyed the fish and chips and Irish Nachos with pints of Guinness. Food was served quickly, hot and tasty. A big menu with wide selection of food but nothing really spectacular. Food wise, it's pretty standard so keep your expectations down. I ordered a cobb salad with grilled chicken and the chicken was so hard it was inedible. The bacon cheeseburger was overcooked and extremely dry even though we asked for it to be medium. We ordered 3 burgers for the table and none of the burgers came out being medium, everyone of them was well done. The fries were crispy and good so thankful for that. We sat outside by the porch and service was close to non-existent. Out of sight, out of mind? The Reuben was fantastic! Plenty of very good corned beef and the cheese was ooey gooey all on the perfect rye bread with just enough sour crout and thousand island dressing. Great sandwich! I had the fried cod and french fries with a tossed salad and the best damn Diet Coke with lemon that I've ever tasted. We haven't had a bad meal here yet. Been here 3 times during our stay in the area. The fish fry is one of our favorites. Nice large , flaky and crispy pieces of fish. Cottage pie is also another favorite, can't eat the whole thing. The meat is very tender, the potatoes fluffy. And if you want a burger, can't go wrong here. If you prefer a Ruben, share it, it's huge. Great selection of Irish whiskey too. Ask for Irish scones, yummy. The ambiance is traditional Irish pub with dark woods and cozy atmosphere. Gross, the Reuben today was loaded with fat and tough to chew. We laid all the fat and gristle loaded corned beef from the sandwich out on the plate and asked the waitress to show the cook. My wife said, what did the cook think and the waitress said he said nothing. They didn't even offer to take it off of our check. This place is horrible. A few weeks ago we had their smash burger and the beef was spoiled. The waitress took the whole thing off our check. She said this cook gets a lot of complaints. So, we are done. Never again. Where is the manager? There is never a manager in the restaurant to talk to. She is upstairs doing whatever is what they tell us. Their waitresses quit every month so you never get to know anyone. The next time you come in and they are gone. Quality has gone downhill and now we will go elsewhere. read more

The night we were there there was a band playing a live event that played well and spilled out onto the dining room. Staff like every where else is doing triple duty. Chicken fingers were a bit over done, or the oil needed to be changed, chicken wings were meaty but the bbq sauce wasn't great. I ordered a Rachel it was perfect. Stopped in on a Sunday evening for an impromptu dinner & a drink at the bar. It has the feel of a friendly neighborhood establishment. The bartender was confused by my simple order of Scotch & Soda. At first I was told that this well stocked bar had no Scotch and then once she found it I was asked what kind of soda. She took our orders which arrived fairly quickly but my dining companions side order with his burger was incorrect. I had the Fish & Chips but subbed out the fries for onion rings. The Cole slaw was good although quite vinegary. Overall it was a good meal for the price. The drinks however were a little pricey, I was given and charged for a double even though I hadn't requested such. After driving 4 hours from Niagara to the Howe Caverns, we were STARVING and wanted a good meal that would fill us for the remainder of our 3+ hour drive. Chieftans was the only place open for Memorial Day and THANK GOODNESS because we had the best service and food. All of the staff members were so kind and helped each other out in ways you don't normally see. We started with the Irish Nachos with a side of beer cheese and HOLY COW, it was the best I have ever had. We got the creamy pasta dish which came with so much pasta & a beautifully parm cheese decorated plate and the Rebeun sandwich (which my partner loved and said it was one of the best he ever had). Our drinks were strong and cheap, amazing! LOVE the atmosphere and dedication to the Irish pub culture. read more

Having just visited Howe Caverns a few miles away,  we were looking for a late lunch. It was that in betweeney time around 330pm and we found ourselves in Cobleskill. We walked into the restaurant, were greeted and promptly sat at the table. There were only 2 other diners in the restaurant who left shortly after we arrived. Staff now outnumbered us by at least 2 to 1.. ! The atmosphere was obviously quiet but this place somehow looks and feels like it rocks if you get here at the 'proper' time. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a Texasburger  preceded by a bacon n potato "soup du jour". The soup did feel as though it had been reheated in a microwave but was warm and homely. The burgers, which came with coleslaw and fries, were substantial and tasty, very nicely cooked as per the waitress' recommendation (medium rare). We consumed a glass of house Pino and a Nirvana IPA and departed having paid around $45 ex tip. So all round I would say worthy of 4 stars. However I had stupidly left my credit card at the table only to discover that our waitress, whose name I think was Dominique, has chased me across the street and hunted me down to return my credit card. Had a good experience the first time. The bartender was really nice and had great chicken stories. The food was good, nothing to write home about or crave later but it was decent. Good beer choices. The second time we went in we walked back out because it was too overly cleaner crazy and I can't breath in that kind of environment. We found this great Irish restaurant to eat at and it was awesome. Not one thing to complain about. A miracle I know. The food was great, the waitresses were so sweet and patient and food came out cooked properly and in a timely manner. My family and I tried this place over the weekend whilst upstate (and yes I just used the term whilst.) Normally, they always go to the same two or three restaurants but I convinced them to try something new. We didn't realize this joint had just opened not too long ago. We were first seated at a long table but then were asked to move to this corner booth which was kinda cool and had its own swinging door. Only issue with the door was that the waitress had an awful time bringing the food in without risk of tripping or dropping something. I held it open for her each time and its def something the owners should remove since it makes their job harder. Anyway we had 3 diff burgers, two orders of fish and chips and one baked fish special over risotto w veg. Everyone snarfed the food. Fish was good but unfortunately the batter on the fried portions needed something in it. If not for the tartar sauce, it would have tasted like nothing. AT ALL. It was probably me and my stomach being weird but after eating the fish I had a wicked stomachache for the next two days. Perhaps the food? Perhaps my family is just coming down with something since they've all been ill the past week? Perhaps I just didn't eat well the last 48 hours? I don't know and cant blame them. Slow service, but man, the food was great. I love Irish-American pubs. I didn't expect one in the middle of nowhere in Cobleskil to be good. I mean I expected the place to be a Mom-n-Pop establishment that just claimed to be "Irish" with small sandwiches and Guinness. On the contrary, the decor was authentic yet upscale, while still aesthetically pleasing to the Irishman's eye. The food was incredible. I saw how cheap everything was, and assumed the portion sizes were going to be small, so I ordered both the potato "nachos" and five wings. Both were huge, I mean huge, and delicious. In fact, it was one of the better meals of my adolescent life. I wish Newark would open somewhere this good. If you're within 30 minutes of Cobleskil, definitely go to Chieftan's, but hurry, Cobleskil doesn't have the population to support a restaurant this great. read more

I am a local and here a lot. It's my favorite local spot, but I'll stick to the pros and cons format plus lots of pictures. Pros: - the gorgeous fully stocked bar with Smithwick's and Guinness on tap - the decor, it's a beautiful remodel - when the food is good, it's REALLY good (the roast beef sandwich and burgers are spot on delicious) - the cook ... nothing had been over or under cooked - nice, varied menu (including dessert), but not too much to get lost in, which I like - both male bartenders, they're top notch with customer service - the brown bread is sensational - they offer off-street parking - there's public wi-fi you can access inside the restaurant - owner always on premises and checking on customers Cons: - putting cilantro, raw red onion, and raw tomatoes on almost everything (even onion rings!). It tastes terrible on hot dishes and masks the flavor of what you WANT to eat! - letting a young female family member use booths just to have loud phone conversations in the bar area - the shepherd's pie is not a true shepherd's pie and needs some work (again with the raw veg all over it) - waitresses seem a bit green to service (you're either rushed or forgotten and have to ask for more drinks) - the steaks and mashed have no seasoning (salt or pepper) Still, it's great if you're avoiding the college crowd and love a nice bar with good food. read more
