Food was fast and delicious and the service was very attentive. You could tell that some improvements had recently been made.

Loved staying here. The staff was really friendly, especially Linda. Breakfast and coffee/tea are always included, so that's a nice plus. The place just re-opened under new ownership, so everything looks super cute and nice! My only cons were Wi-Fi/TV being slow & causing some issues, slanted floors threw me off a bit, and not being able to close my window caused me to catch a cold. Will definitely be coming back, especially with the restaurant opening up to dinner and not just breakfast. I'm excited to see the American Hotel take off with the people that made it special. I also like the shops located across the street, they're definitely worth checking out. read more

This is not just a hotel but a destination. This is the best place to stay in the area and the hotel owners are above and beyond welcoming. If you are lucky you will be in town when the restaurant is open for dinner or make your way up Brimstone for breakfast or lunch. read more

I had dinner here the other night for the first time since it's re-opened. The side salad was fresh and the buttermilk herb dressing was delicious. The strip steak was cooked to my liking (medium rare) and had a lot of flavor--very tasty. It was served with some great scalloped potatoes (I do wish the serving was just a bit bigger) and very fresh steamed/sautéed green beans. Dessert was delicious. I'd been told by a couple of friends that had gone recently that the wine offerings left a bit to be desired, but I'm not a frequent drinker and I've never been picky about wine so I thought nothing of it. That said, I had a glass of white (Middleburgh) wine that would have tasted fine if I'd ordered a glass of white grape juice...as wine, it wasn't something I'd ever want to drink again. It was very sweet & fruity, but totally fell flat with absolutely no finish. As I recall, there were only three wines on the menu--one being a red and the other a Sauvignon Blanc--neither of which appealed to me at the time. Service was great--very friendly & professional. Decor is nice; elegant but comfortable. I'd prefer candlelight at the tables with the sconces & ceiling lights dimmed a bit, but the tables had those rechargeable centerpiece lights that change with a tap so a bit lacking in charm. Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner and understand that new restaurants need some time to settle in/adjust so we'll be back for sure. I do hope they're able to work on their wine list. Staff was great (although a couple of the wait staff seemed a bit too casually dressed for the environment) and the food was well worth the trip. If I scored on the wine alone, I would have been generous to give the restaurant one star, but since the food, service, and atmosphere were very pleasant and worth returning for I'm giving them 4 out of 5 stars. I can only review the food, I just stopped in for lunch after a day trip to the area to check out Beekman 1802 across the street, but the meal I had was easily yummy enough to convince me to stay at this hotel if only for the proximity to an excellent menu. The hotel is adorable, loved the atmosphere. The menu isn't gigantic, but I also appreciate that. I'm usually overwhelmed when there are too many options. I had the street corn salad for lunch with grilled chicken (another option was shrimp). It was INCREDIBLE. So incredible I immediately set to try and recreate the recipe when I got home. The chicken was tender and juicy, a little crispy on the outside, felt like they put real effort into rather than adding it as an afterthought which is sometimes how I feel about chicken that comes on a salad. I'd eat here again in a heartbeat and if you're anywhere close, I highly recommend you try the American Hotel out. read more

I could not love this place, and the people that make it special, more. We went to Sharon Springs for a romantic weekend away and stayed at the American Hotel. The owners Doug and Garth were there much of the time as well as Austin who was a fantastic inn keeper, server and singer!! We were truly made to feel like family from our first step inside the door of the beautifully decorated historic hotel. We stayed two nights and enjoyed two complementary breakfast and one extravagant dinner in the dining room. The food was outstanding throughout from the blueberry pancakes with lemon zest to the baked seafood dinner. Seafood is brought in from a Brooklyn Fish Market weekly so there are a number of seafood choices. I went with the baked lobster, scallops and shrimp. The scallops and shrimp were large but tender and not over seasoned. My partner had the Moroccan Chickpea Stew and really enjoyed it, it was one of two vegetarian entree options. The wine and beer selection is small but well curated and they have a full bar. Be prepared for small rooms as this is a historic restoration hotel and Doug and Garth have kept to the character of yesteryear. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of room to get ready. That said the front lounge and bar are comfortable places to sit and chat. The team at the American Hotel made a special weekend absolutely perfect. If you're looking for a quiet getaway Sharon Spring is a great choice and The American Hotel is a perfect place to rest your head, have a pint, and meet some wonderful people. read more

This is probably one of my favorite places in the region and has been a huge impetus for improvement in the last couple of decades. Not only is the setting absolutely gorgeous, the food and hospitality are more than worth your while. Despite it being early October, we were able to sit on the back patio next to the Japanese zen fountain overlooking the lush, green yard in the back. The interior is fully restored with a lot of care to historic detail and features unique art old and new from local makers. The dining room is more formal but the bar and sitting area are casual and laid-back so it never feels pretentious. The front porch is spacious and accommodating and the perfect place to enjoy a drink and conversation. Doug and Garth are true masters at running a quality establishment and the entire staff is gracious and professional. Chelsea and Sarah took excellent care of our group and made us feel so welcome. Highly recommend the corn cakes for brunch as well as any of their craft cocktails from the bar. I look forward to coming here anytime I am back home. read more

This review is for the American Hotel Restaurant and NOT the lodging. Is there a separate Yelp entry for only the restaurant? If so, I'll move this review. Food for old people. Not much else to it. None of the flavors popped and gave me that "oh, this is good" buzz. And that's what I'm looking for in any restaurant outside fast food -- if they expect repeat business. Oddly, the french fries, what I consider 'bar food' was the best in category out of the three entrees and accompanying soup/salads I sampled. I really wanted to like the place after reading the reviews. High expectations? Yes, but I try to be fair regardless. No one at my table was impressed with the food. Was it bad? No. If the prices were lower I would give it three stars. But alas, it's not worth the price point for the quality/flavor, at least for non-tourists. The main dining area is a bit small with no where for sound to go and die. It is cozy and the wood tables, chairs and surroundings makes you feel at home. Thankfully, the weather was pleasant and the windows were open otherwise I got this tables-in-a-closet feel to the place. Low ceilings are awful at restaurants. The only rating that matters: I have no plans to return. read more

We were here for the special 2018 Harvest Feast at the hotel which ends the Sharon Springs Harvest Festival and features produce from local farms. This year featured Sunnycrest Orchards and it's craft vinegars. Sharon Springs' Mayor was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Each course was introduced by Laurie or Tim Schilde of Sunnycrest, each featured a craft vinegar prep and each was unique: from the Sweet Pepper and Chicken Gumbo to Green Tomato Salad to Pork Rouladen to a desert of poached apple w/ice cream and honey citrus gastrique. This was truly one of the most interesting and enjoyable evenings we have had dining. And calling it unique doesn't do enough to describe the experience. read more

What a spectacular experience. Located in the charming village of Sharon Springs, owners Doug Plummer and Garth Roberts (whom we didn't get to meet, but assume that he's equally fabulous) were gracious, generous and delightful. Beautifully restored and furnished, the American Hotel is the perfect getaway. Filled with historic artifacts, it's wonderful to see the once grand lady restored with care and attention to detail. Breakfast was very, very good...I had homemade granola with Greek yogurt and sliced strawberries and my husband had a very tasty omelette. When a snowstorm closed the kitchen for dinner we were given access to the cooler to store our serendipitous meal and encouraged to sit before a roaring fire as we continued to soak in the comfortable surroundings. A visit to this unique home away from home will not disappoint. read more

I found about this place when I still liked Rachel Ray and her $40 show. Even though we went right after peak summer season had ended, prices were a bit on the high side in my opinion. Especially considering that our room was the size of a closet and we had a lovely view of the parking lot. Other than the cramped size however, this place is really lovely. The owners have albums in the lobby with pictures taken throughout the restoration process, and it really makes you appreciate the inn/hotel. Breakfast in the backyard was great! The lawn/garden is pretty huge and so peaceful. (I'm a sucker for adirondack chairs and theres plenty of those in this hotel) The deck on the second floor of the hotel is also nice, but the area in general is pretty BLAH (they have like 2 stores on the entire road!) so the view onto the street wasn't much to look at. But otherwise, this is a quaint little romantic bed and breakfast :) read more

Good time to go between noon and 2:00 PM, because you can choose from either the Brunch menu (8:00 AM - 2:00 PM) or the Sunday Afternoon Meals menu (11:30 AM to 4:00 PM)...... double the choices ! ! ! Trying to remember all our meals.... Pan Seared Salmon for Ms. I, I had "beef hash" special of the day (large chunks of rare tenderloin, small potatoes, peppers, onions.... mmmmm), our (adult) son had the strip steak and eggs (perfectly cooked), and his female friend had some french toast made with raisin bread and topped with huge, fresh blackberries and a tasty sauce. Had a superb dinner here on a rainy Saturday night. It was raining so we ate in the main dining room of this charming and lovingly restored historic hotel. Weather permitting, the back garden with pleasant lighting and a beautiful fountain would have been my first choice for seating. The long, covered front porch, with plenty of comfortable rocking chairs was a perfect spot to enjoy after dinner coffee or a cognac and listen to the rain. Dinner began with everyone at our table of 5 ordering the special corn soup. Our beautiful server, Kelly, tipped us off that this is a very special treat and only made when fresh, local corn is available. It was the best tasting dish anyone has ever made with fresh corn. Unlike corn chowder, it was puréed, without cream, making it wonderfully light and bursting with corn flavor. It was topped with a couple of large, blackened shrimp and fresh, red hot pepper. The corn soup stole the show, and launched us into culinary stratosphere. We enjoyed the much photographed lamb chops, a perfectly cooked steak, the sumptuous crab and shrimp enchilada, a seafood stew and a crispy schnitzel with red cabbage reduction. And just when you thought it could not get any better, for dessert we all had some of the house special maple cream layer cake. A tall, blond, buttery cake with silky maple cream frosting. It is a huge slice that was easy to share, but you secretly wanted it all to yourself. read more

I'm not quite sure why I've never been here to eat, given we live close and have been to the Bistro numerous times. This is a very good place to eat. Between the bistro down the street and The American Hotel, Sharon springs has by far the best eating in the county. Both of these places are reasons to not drive to Albany for a good dinner. The food was excellent. Definitely try the poutine, I do wish there had been a tiny bit more gravy and the cheese curd was not as cold so it had melted a little more but that's a minor complaint because the meat was cooked perfectly. Everything else we had was well prepared and fresh. We will be making this place a more frequent stop instead of driving out towards Albany all the time. read more

My partner and I went to the beekman harvest festival and decided to have lunch at the American. We didn't have reservations but the innkeeper (Garth) said it would be about 20 minutes or so and if we liked, we could have a drink at the small lobby bar. Which we did. That was a mistake. The bartender must HATE his career choice as he was the slowest and rudest person I have ever seen in the food business. He never acknowledged us. No greeting. Mediocre drink and had to wait for the check. We felt as though we were intruding on him. His bad mood was enough for us to reconsider having lunch there. If he doesn't like the public he oughta find another line of work. By the way, lunch was very good. read more

We went with a group of 7 after having the American Hotel recommended to use by about 7 different people over the course of the previous week. With such high praise, we decided to give it a try. We were warned that the meal would be pricey, but worth it. We shared several appetizers, and each was great. We tried their seasonal corn soup, goat cheese, seared tuna, and rare beef poutine. The corn soup was delicious and we were informed by Garth and Doug (the energetic and charming owners) that the corn had been picked that morning. My favorite was the poutine, as it had the exact right amount of cheese, gravy and fries, with sliced pieces of beef on top. For our entrees, we tried a variety, but most people had either lobster or steak. My steak was perfectly cooked, and the lobster I tried was buttery and great. Most of our party had the maple cake for dessert, and it was wonderfully moist and sweet, with a touch of salt. We arrived at 7 pm for dinner, and the next time we looked at our watches was 4 hours later. The food was fantastic, and Garth and Doug visited our table several times to give us some of the history of the hotel, chat, or inform us about the menu. We enjoyed it so much, we made reservations for the following week before we left. Overall, a great experience and we highly recommend the American Hotel. read more

The best dining experience I have had in a long time was at the American Hotel. The owners have done an amazing job restoring the historic hotel in Sharon Springs. The food is fantastic and the location is sublime. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and professional. If I could give them 6-stars I would do so. It is worth recommending the Grilled Rare Beef Poutine appetizer and the Maple Cake for dessert. The Poutine is the best I have ever had - better than you will find in Quebec. The Maple Cake may be the perfect dessert. The American Hotel will put Sharon Springs back on the map for a lot of people. It is a great village, and it is definitely worth the trip. read more

Had Sunday brunch at the lovingly restored vintage hotel. Beautiful dining room, lovely fixtures, excellent food. If you have occasion to stay at this fine establishment, I hear from the guests who were around me and various friends who have stayed there that it is some of the best accommodations in the region. Service was a little slow, but it was quite busy (Hall of Fame Weekend) so that was to be expected. The eggs Benedict were as they should be and the eggs were perfectly poached, just the right amount of hollendaise, lovely presentation. Couldn't pass up the excellent mushroom soup either, which was a woodsy blend of many types of mushrooms chopped finely to make the soup almost creamy, but was not a cream of mushroom. We have stayed at the American Hotel twice now. We love it there. We're not the upper class type of guys, more so jeans and shirts kinda guys from Oklahoma. We're treated like family while staying there. Even the local town folks, knows when we're there when we're in town. It doesn't matter if you want to nap on the front porch, read in the sitting area, eat the best food you'll ever fine, in the dining room (Lee is an amazing cook!) Or have a drink at the bar, it's a cozy atmosphere and...you never know who'll drop by. One night after the restaurant was closed, Heidi,(the Hotel Manager/head server in the restaurant), her husband Drew, Doug (one of the owners), my husband and I and another couple sat around, laughing, and talking until who knows what time. That's stuff that never would happen at a Super 8!! Well worth the $$ and you'll want to come back. Trust me!! read more

I'm writing this review after our third trip to the American Hotel. Our first visit was three or four years ago for brunch, then for a fund raiser early this January and again two Sundays ago also for brunch. The Lobster cake eggs Benedict with creole hollandaise, a special on my most recent visit, was exceptional. The richness of the shellfish, runny egg yolk, mixed with the spicy velvety cream of the hollandaise was beautifully executed. It is not the hotels fault but in NYS there is still an archane law that prohibits alcohol from being sold on Sundays before noon so we had to wait 1/2 an hour for our blood Mary's to arrive. While we waited for our libations we made do with the special house blend coffee. It was OK but not nearly strong enough for my taste. Their is one terribly unique item on their menu that everyone who stops at the American Hotel ought to try: Maple Cake. It is delicious without being sickly sweet. The service is prompt and efficient. It is a pleasant place to spend a lazy Sunday. I'm already looking forward to my next trip. read more

A posh little surprise in this pretty - but very sleepy - part of upstate NY. We only samples cocktails from the tiny bar, but there is a huge outdoor seating area, well a few tables and vast, well-landscaped green lawn out back. Professional bartender knows how to mix all classic drinks and at a few bucks cheaper than hotel bars in the city to be sure. Friends in the area have had dinner in the formal dining room and said it was very good. Nice atmosphere and a throwback to previous grandeurs of the Catskills. Wow, first time there for a surprise Valentines dinner and they were busy but we had a phenomenal meal. We had a Sampler appetizer that could be a meal. It was amazing. 2 fabulous crab cakes, 4 shrimp cocktail and 2 beer battered cheese balls served with chunked cooked apples! The combo was pretty mind blowing !! Salads came out on cold plates and our dinners of steak and lobster were wonderful. We took home our dessert of a deconstructed chocolate dessert that was chocolate chip cookie and chocolate mousse. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a charming old hotel. We sat in the back garden for an excellent lunch on a warm fall day. The food and service were great. I had crab or lobster cakes and steamed clams. It's impressive that fresh seafood was this good rather far from an ocean or any likely source of fresh fish. There is a full bar with a pub, and the interior dining room looked pleasant. It was nice enough I may go back this winter and do some cross country skiing nearby, then have dinner and spend the night in the hotel. read more

The Hotel seems to have generated a lot of hype, and the four of us went with pretty high expectations. Lesson learned: the (inflated) prices do not guarantee quality. Price aside, the meal was a wash. Overcooked duck breast -- but with an interesting dried cherry sauce (they said). Pan seared shrimp, scallops, and lobster: well, the scallops were cooked to perfection, but the shrimp and scallops were cooked to death. Besides, there was an overwhelming Cajun spice in the breadcrumb topping. Waterlogged zucchini. But the desserts were fine -- goat cheese cheesecake and a lavender blueberry cake, with an excellent French press coffee. Save your money. You can do better elsewhere. read more

What a special place - not just for being a charming hotel and lovely restaurant run by the warmest and most gracious gentlemen, but also for what owners Doug and Garth have done to inspire a rebirth in the tiny Village of Sharon Springs. They are true pioneers and renaissance men who bought a crumbling old hotel and restored it to its former glory, all the while building a community of friends and supporters and inspiring others to purchase, renovate and open their own shops in town. Yes, you can "do" Sharon Springs in an hour, but listen to the stories, read up on the history, take a look at the old buildings and just imagine the courage and determination that it took to get it to where it is today. And once you do you'll find it hard to resist sharing in Doug and Garth's vision for the Village's continuing revitalization. We stayed for one night on a friend's recommendation and we're glad we did. Nothing beats the warm hospitality of Doug, Garth and Austin, the lovely meals and charming accommodations. And I love the fact that our very presence was evidence that Doug and Garth's dream has become a reality. read more
