Bait & Switch ! Horrible! I called ahead of time and got an estimate for exactly what we wanted. Then, after we took the time to go there, juggle cars for the day, and leave work; they call us with numbers that are double what was told to us. And, that does not even count the extra stuff they wanted to do. This is just on the items that they told me a price for. Suddenly, the numbers are hundreds more when they have our car sitting there and wasted an hour and a half out of our day. I guess they do not care even about common courtesy. For working families who do not have extra cars sitting around, this type of business practice is damaging to their community and their industry. Look at even the guy who gave them 4 stars. He even said don't use them for brakes as they double prices on you !! I prefer to give them 1 star for this practice. read more

Every person I've worked with has been extremely pleasant. If you make an appointment or come on a weekday, the service is very quick. It's the middle of exam season when a warning light goes on in my car. Low tire pressure? I don't have time to deal with that now. I'll add some air eventually. I'm sure it's fine... It wasn't fine. My tire was completely flat, with a piece hardware sticking out of it, which meant I would have to make time to deal with it as soon as possible. I was so impressed with how easy this Midas location made the whole process. I brought in my car (with its totally flat tire). They checked it out and told me it could be patched (the best news ever since my tires are still relatively new), and said it would be ready in about an hour. They met their time estimate, charged me a very fair price for the patch, and were courteous and communicative throughout the whole process. I'm very happy with my experience today, and I will definitely return in the future. read more

I normally work on my own vehicle. Went in for a diagnostic to get a second opinion on my own diagnosis. Literally told them upon arriving I knew it was probably the starter. But I also wanted them to look at the brake issue I was having since I was paying 90$. They did not look at the brakes whatsoever. They wrote "ABS" issue on the receipt slip which again was what I told them was most likely the issue when I dropped off the car (car is modified and I don't use traction control) but I wanted to know if their was air in the lines. When I picked it up I was given absolutely no verbal explanation of what they looked at or if there were any concerns. I know for a fact that there is a serious break issue so the fact they neglected to even notice that at a full price diagnostic charge is absurd. Furthermore, they quoted me 700$+ to replace the starter. I payed 135$ at autozone w a lifetime warranty and installed it myself in one hour. I would like to know what other businesses are charging 450$+ an hour for mechanic services. Absolutely terrible customer service and the quote was stupid. read more

This is the worst car service I have ever received, I went in for wheel alignment and break replacement bc my breaks were making a grinding noise and they said I needed a to replace the rotor in my front tire which was fine whatever it takes to fix it. A couple days later my breaks started making a grinding noise and I tired to call them and they wouldn't get back to me I even put an online appointment and no one ever got back to me. I decided to take my car to the dealership I bought my car from and they told me that the previous service I had did not do a job well done and that my drums were completely damaged which cost me a lot of money to fix. I am so disappointed in this place I never ever complain and I always try to be understanding if anyone makes mistakes but they never got back to me. Also the guy who did the service was completely covered in oil and my seat, steering wheel and carpet were filled with oil. A waste of money read more

Oil change was completed quickly and they called me on my cell to let me know it was done and gave me an estimate on the check engine light. Unfortunately it is expensive, but I went to a auto zone today and they didn't even have the part I need so I dont think it is their fault. When my car needed some work my older brother suggested I use Midas. I was reluctant at first because I like using local places but I went there. For the most part the experience was good. The people were nice and they did their job. One time they even gave me a ride home while my car was getting work done. In the summer of 2012 I ended up taking my car there for the same problem 4 times. Something was wrong with the alternator. They kept replacing it and doing other adjustments. It seemed fine. I went on a cross country road trip (I was moving to Oakland, CA) and the alternator needed to be replaced in the middle of now where Arizona. I called my guy at Midas and he said he would reimburse me for whatever repairs to the alternator I do while on the road, which was the right thing to do. I had spent over $2500 that summer on the car. It took two months to get that money back but they came through. I have very mixed feelings about Midas. On one hand they did their job but part of me feels very unsettled. They seem to be good people but maybe not good mechanics. I shouldn't have had to take my car in that much for the same problem. They talked down to me or would talk over me and only address my boyfriend. read more

When I first walked in I was helped right away, I dropped off my vehicle that had a flat tire. The guy told me I had two nails on my tire and he said he would be able to patch the tire. I would of just preferred to replace it . Okay so 3 days passed and the same tire went flat again! so we had to put a spare tire on but one of the lug nuts was put on way too tight and it should not be that tight, so we ended up stripping it because it was that tight. But thankfully we got some help on messing with it and taking it off. So the next morning I had to go back to the place so they could replace it , and of course I had to pay for the replacement. So I had to pay to patch the tire and to replace the same exact tire that they patched! I feel like they just took advantage of me and made me waist my money when I could of replaced it the first time! read more

I was very disappointed about this Midas. I first went to get my check engine light fixed and they charged me a lot Of money for a stupid diagnostic that failed to fix the problem. I spend half a day at the shop the first day and after they were finished they assured me that my truck was fixed. But then the next day the check engine light came on again so I took it back to Midas. They wanted to charge for a problem they were supposed to fix in the first place. I stood my ground and they looke at my truck for no charge that day. At the end of that day the same story was reenacted and they told me the problem was fixed. I drove my truck for the next two days and my truck started to Smoke and went to a complete stop... I managed to get the truck back to Midas for the third time and they said the original problem was not the real problem... So there I sat for six hours waiting for my truck to get fixed ... And again they told me that the truck was fixed. I thought problems were finally fixed. But the next day my truck broke down again and so I paid a tow truck to deliver it to Midas. After they rechecked for the 4 th time , they told me here was a new problem and since this new problem wasn't related to the original problem that I needed to pay more money to fix the new problem. I was furious about them not sticking to their word and fixing the problem that I paid for and was expecting to be fixed. If you are thinking about taking your car to Midas you are crazy... But it's your choice if you want to waste money on want to be mechanics... read more

The repairs have been completed quickly and more importantly, the repair was done correctly. Taking you car in for service and repair is never fun. If I could give zero stars I would. First off, they will take advantage of you. They urged me to repair and replace parts that did not need to be replaced. Because of my lack of knowledge on automotive parts, I conceded and allowed them to continue with estimates. I signed off on an egregious receipt, $1100. I signed off reluctantly, but was in a rush to get to class and didn't have anyone in the moment to ask for advice. After leaving, I spoke with people more knowledgeable in car parts and realized I was completely and totally ripped off. I called their manager Jeremy, and told him I was a college student who could not afford an $1100 bill and to please cancel the install of spark plugs. He tells me they've already started and it was too late (B.S.) but not to worry! They will deduct my price and give me tons of coupons to help me out. When I get back to pick my car up after class I remind him of his promise. He takes $50 off the top. Are you kidding me? Nearly $45 per spark plug, FORTY-FIVE DOLLARS. In total I paid around $600 for the plugs and labor even though I only went to Midas in the first place to change out my battery. The manager was unapologetic even though he conceded to taking advantage of my ignorance. All in all, I am never going back there and urge anyone reading this to do the same. Not a well run business and if they had any understanding of business ethics I'd like to think they would value the principle of fair trade a bit more. I brought my Honda Civic SI into Midas because my check engine light was on. I felt trusting of Midas because of its national business status and boy was I wrong. The workers at Midas told me that my check engine light was on because I needed a new catalytic converter which is indeed true. My catalytic converter was replaced with a non OEM catalytic converter, which I was told would work on my vehicle. As soon as I paid the $500 to have my catalytic converter replaced and drove off of the lot my car started making a loud popping noise as I accelerated. I came back and they "fixed" the popping noise. 50 miles later after having the popping noise fixed my check engine light came back on. I was told my car had many multiple codes which meant I had an electrical problem. I was referred by Midas to BELL AUTO ELECTRIC. BELL quoted my $500 to fix my electrical problem and I paid the price. I literally went back to BELL auto for 4 continuous days to be told that I now need a cylinoid replaced. I said to hell with Midas and Bell auto. I proceeded to have my car fixed at HONDA. The master tech at honda replaced my cylinoid and told me that I NEEDED TO HAVE MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER CHANGED to an OEM catalytic converter! I called Midas off of Guadalupe to discuss the problem being proposed by Honda. A worker at at MIdas named Brian or Brad tells me that I have 2 catalyitic converters and the one they replaced is correct. The master tech at Honda responds by telling me that I only have 1 catalytic converter and that Midas is basically full of shit. I believe that that Midas created a mountain out of an ant so to speak in terms of my car problems. I am $1000 in the hole. I am a disabled war veteran. I am currently in the process of being contacted by the district manager of Midas. I strongly recommend that you never get your car fixed at Midas, especially Bell Auto. The man at Bell Auto by the name of Bob is a very nice man, but he probably does not have very much talent. I hope that people consider my honest and unbiased story before ever bringing your car to one of these places for repairs. read more

On 11/10/15, my car overheated while on business travel in Austin and Midas @ 4001 Guadalupe Street was the closest automotive repair shop. In summary, this facility explained that the problem was the thermostat and that they would replace it. On 11/11/15, I received a phone call from the manager, John, stating that they thermostat housing was accidentally broken during the repair but they would make it right by me on the final bill. When I arrived at the facility to get my car, he showed me the thermostat housing and explained that the piece that had broken off was the reason for the car overheating in the first place. He went to great lengths to show me that the broken piece from the thermostat had fallen into the housing which prevented the unit from opening and closing as normal and that replacing the housing would fix the issue. This made no sense to me since his technicians were the ones that broke the housing when trying to remove it. But, I was desperate to get it repaired and went along with the story. $761.45 dollars later, I left their facility and the car overheated again only 5 minutes down the road. I called John to explain what had happened and that I was taking the car to another dealership for repair. He asked me to call him back after the repair was complete to let him know about the diagnosis. I managed to make to a hotel where I spent an additional $199 on a room because I had to book it so late in the afternoon - no other rooms were available nearby. I contacted my roadside repair company and had the car towed to another dealership the following morning, 11/12. Later that day, this dealership called to say that the problem was the water pump had malfunctioned. They went on to explain that when a water pump malfunctions, it is obvious (if you know what you are doing) because water is dripping from the unit. My car was repaired under warranty for no charge. As instructed, I called John @ Midas to explain what I had found out. He said that he and/or his manager, or both, would contact me to discuss our next steps. I never received that phone call. I disputed the charge with my credit card company but my dispute was denied after they received a letter from John stating that 1) I called them from San Antonio the following day after the repair stating that the car had broken down again - FALSE! 2) that I told them the radiator had broken resulting in the car leaking coolant - FALSE! This is a perfect example of scam artists at their worst! While I am certainly not done fighting this, I wanted to alert the public to the risk you take if you use Midas @ 4001 Guadalupe Street in Austin. If you want your tires replaced or your oil changed, maybe these are your guys. Anything repair outside of that - BUYER BEWARE! John and his crew are used car salesmen and don't have your best interest at heart. read more

DO NOT GET YOUR INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET REPLACED HERE. This repair is commonly needed on many GM cars, and it expensive (due mostly to the amount of labor involved) but, if done properly (and, as is standard, with a "problem-solver" gasket which is thicker than the OEM gasket), should last the life of the car. THIS PLACE DID NOT REPLACE MINE PROPERLY AND THE LEAK CAME BACK LESS THAN 10K MILES LATER. Now, it was within their rights not to stand behind their work as it was technically out of warranty by the time the problems caused by said work started appearing. BUT when I talked to the manager, he basically lied to my face and told me he couldn't find the leak (I'm pretty positive he saw it initially, but he wouldn't concede it was there until I got another mechanic to show me how to point it out) and then kept trying to change the subject to my catalytic converter--which had started having Service Engine code problems caused by the leakage. He kept saying there's no way the manifold gasket leak could have caused my catalytic converter problem. This line of argument was pretty irrelevant to the discussion since it didn't change the fact that they improperly installed the replacement gasket, but it also happened to be FALSE according multiple mechanics at two different shops (he urged me to get a second opinion, and then I did, and they basically told me he was BSing me). It would have been one thing if they just told me they wouldn't help me out. Even though there's no doubt in my mind they made serious errors that are costing me a lot of money, they were not obligated to offer me anything. Don't get me wrong--the indifference to blatantly substandard work certainly bothers me (regardless of official policies). But the lying was really the the part that aggravated me the most. Places like this are why people fear and dislike mechanics. read more

A few years ago, before yelp, I made an appointment at this particular Midas for an oil change, alignment, and a check-over for a road trip. I made the appointment a day before I was going to drive to Oregon and I let them know that is why I was going in. I showed up on time for my time and waited four hours before anyone talked to me about my car. I literally had fallen asleep in the waiting area when the service writer came up to me with my air filter in his hand. It was dirty and he asked if I wanted to replace it. Of course I did - I was driving out of the state the next day. He chucked it in the trash can behind the desk and two hours later, he said the work was done. I had an appointment for an oil change and an alignment that took six hours, so naturally, I was upset. I paid my total, walked out, and for the first time in my life, I checked the mechanic's work in the parking lot. The very same air filter the service writer threw in the trash, was installed in my car. So, he threw it in the trash in front of me, and later pulled it out of the trash to install in my car. I checked my receipt, where I was billed for an air filter and walked inside for an explanation. The service writer said that they didn't have the correct filter in stock and didn't want me to wait any longer, so they installed my old filter. I showed them how I was billed for a new filter and they had no explanation for being caught. I asked for my check and tore it up at the counter. Midas will never get my business again, and this particular location will always get my story. They are dishonest, they are the bad-example of where you want your car repaired... or not repaired and told it was repaired. The better business bureau didn't do anything, so hopefully this will help someone from having a similar experience. read more

I went in for a simple oil change. As I was waiting for them to finish what I thought would be a quick 20 minute appointment, I suddenly saw my car hoisted up in the air, all tires taken off, and several mechanics "inspecting" it. I voiced my concern/disapproval, but was told it was all part of the regular checkup (which I hadn't request, by the way). An hour later, I was approached with a $700+ bill and told that several parts needed replacing. I declined the services, paid for my oil change and left feeling incredibly frustrated by this blatant attempt to rack up services so they could get a bigger bill. Perhaps this is general practice in the industry, but taking apart someone's car without their approval - when all that has been requested is an oil change - was unsettling and felt exploitative. read more

Please do not go here. I needed new bearings so I went to Midas to get them replaced for around $1,000. About 5-6 months later, my bearings went out again...I'm no car expert but unless the bearings were faulty or incorrectly installed, there is no way that after 2,000 miles and 6 months that the bearings should have gone out. When I brought it back in and they told me the bearings should be replaced again, I brought this up and asked why that could have happened. All they said is that the service and bearings were no longer under warranty because the 6 month warranty had passed about 2 weeks prior. I made the mistake of letting them fix the bearing again and then complained to Midas Customer Service. The Customer Service department told me that they would contact the manager. The manager called me back a few days later and said he would refund the price of the service for the second bearing replacement. I said thanks and said I would stop by sometime to get that refund. However, the manager works at three different Midas locations in Austin and is apparently the ONLY person in the city who can do refunds. I was a full-time grad student and worked on campus so it was not easy for me to make it Midas without missing any work, just to get a refund. After trying to contact the manager multiple times, I gave up. The money was no longer worth my time or energy, and neither is this mechanic. I will never go to Midas again. As I read down the other reviews of this Midas, I can also confirm that they try and take advantage of young women who don't know a lot about cars. I had them call my dad since he was helping pay for the service and he managed to talk the price down even though I had expressed the same concerns. The only thing keeping this place in business is the national brand. I would recommend going to Yost Automotive just up the street. read more

I was referred to this Midas location when the passenger side mirror of my car was broken off. I bought a replacement part from Autozone, and was shopping around town comparing instillation prices. After stopping at a couple of places, I stopped at Midas to get a quote on installing my mirror. After waiting 45 minutes, one of the workers came out and told me that they had went ahead and installed the mirror and it was ready to go. I was confused because I had only requested a quote, and had never signed a work authorization form. The worker told me that the mechanic must have overlooked the request for a quote, and charged me full price for the installation. At this point, I had waited 45 minutes and was late for another appointment, so I went ahead and paid for the unauthorized service. After I left Midas, I noticed that the mirror they installed wasn't working. I went back the next day and told them about it, and the head mechanic came out and told me the part from Autozone was defective. At this point, Midas had performed unauthorized work on my car and then installed a defective part without notifying me, or checking their finished work. I asked them why they didn't check the part before letting me drive off the lot with a defective mirror, and they insisted that they had checked it. The head mechanic, John Cathey, assured me that if I returned with a new side mirror part, that he would install it for free. I was unable to go to Midas the following day, so my sister returned on my behalf with the new part. She asked to speak to John Cathey, the head mechanic that had worked on my car. She asked him for a refund of the initial service charge, because 1) I entered Midas requesting a quote, and had my car serviced without my authorization 2) I was charged for the installation of a "defective" mirror 3) The mechanics didn't check to ensure the part worked before letting me drive off with it. I felt that a refund was appropriate recourse, after all of these wrongs were committed. However, after my sister asked for a refund, she was treated with a level of disrespect that was entirely uncalled for. She spoke with John Cathey, who was extremely rude and condescending. He told her that he, "wasn't giving her ANYTHING for free," that he, "wasn't going to sit here and argue with her," all while raising his voice and talking over her. There were other customers in the shop that day who were all listening to him go off on her, displaying his unprofessionalism. After this mistreatment, I didn't follow up with Cathey's instillation offer. I knew that if my father, or any other man had gone in there asking for a refund, Cathey would have treated him very differently than how my sister was treated. Sure enough, after filing a complaint with Midas corporate, Cathey called apologizing for his behavior and offering free oil-change coupons. He was extremely apologetic and charming now that he had a fire under his ass- an entirely different demeanor than the way he treated my sister. I didn't want Midas coupons, I just wanted a refund. He kept telling me there was nothing he could do, and kept apologizing. Unfortunately, I didn't receive a refund, and Midas lost my business. Summary- I really feel that John Cathey took advantage of me, and treated my sister with disrespect because of our age and gender. I can't help but feel like this would have played out differently if he had been working with a man. read more

Avoid this place at all costs! The customer service is terrible, they kept telling me my car would be on the lift in 15 minutes and kept me waiting. I had to go back and both time I waited almost an hour each time for any sort of communication. I know enough about cars that I know what needed to be done and was assured that it would all be covered under warranty. After waiting an hour for them to look at it and tell me what's going on, I had to leave to catch the bus and make it to work. Within 15 minutes of leaving, they called to tell me they needed to replace more parts because they were rusted (which is understandable because the car is originally from New England) and it was going to be $400. The worst part was that Scott couldn't even explain exactly what they had to do. He just kept saying they needed to replace a pipe I asked which pipe, because the resonator pipe as well as the tail pipe were under warranty. He just said, uh, the pipe needs to be replaced. Then, he tried to say they had to order a dual pipe and that would take a day to arrive. This is when I knew he was jerking me around because there is no need for a dual exhaust on my vehicle and it didn't have one to begin with. I declined to have service done, called the local mechanic and got a quote for a 1/3 of the price. To top it all off, when I picked up my car, the estimate papers just said "exhaust pipe", which confirmed my suspicion he was lying to me about the parts being under warranty. Also, I looked under the car and could hardly see any rust. Clearly he didn't want to provide the warranty work that this corporation offers. What a bunch of thieves. read more

I recommend only getting minor services. (ie.-oil change) Customer service is great, but my car was making a noise. They checked it out, resulting my struts costing $1000.32 (w/ coupon $967.86). I received a second opinion, resulting my tire was about to blow out. Basically, if I had my work done at Midas, the problem would still be there, losing over $1000.00. My life would still be in danger because full check was not performed properly. They also said my bf needs a new transmission, but that was not at all the case. read more
