Donald Schober, dba Mid Suffolk Cesspool Service, attempted to clean out my septic tank on May 29, 2010, but couldn't because his truck didn't work properly. He insisted that my septic tank was so clogged up that no one would be able to clean it out. He then put acid into my septic tank and told me he'd be back in a few days after the acid melted the clog. He demanded $400.00 for May 29th work, even though no work was actually accomplished. I learned later by 5 other cesspool cleaners and 3 websites that you should NEVER put acid into the septic tank as it will cause permanent damage and do nothing to dissolve the waste. Mr. Schober had also demanded that I remove 10 shrubs from my front lawn in order to be able to access the cesspool when he returns in a few days. When he did come back, I was not home and he told my daughter that his truck can't handle our septic tank and that he had a recommendation for someone else we should call. Not taking his recommendation, I called L & P Sewer and Drain (from the Pennysaver) and hired them. They completed both the septic tank and cesspool within 1 hour for $500. Many of the cesspool companies I spoke to told me that I got scammed by Mid Suffolk Cesspool Service; they have dealt with cesspool cleaners in the past who use the unprofessional and irresponsible tactic of pouring acid into septic tanks to cover the fact that their truck is broken. I couldn't believe when Donald Schober, dba Mid Suffolk Cesspool Service sued me in Small Claims Court for stopping his $230.00 check I gave him on May 29, 2010. I of course counter-sued with damages of $522.12. This includes the $170.00 cash I gave to Donald Schober on 5/29/10, $25.00 for the canceled check fee, $27.12 is the cost to replace my mattock cutter tool that Mr. Schober broke while lifting my septic tank cover and $300.00 for the cost to replace the 10 shrubs he demanded I remove. The court's decision was that Donald Schober, dba Mid Suffolk Cesspool Service had to pay me half of my $522.12 plus my court fees. Funny, I thought about suing Donald Schober, dba Mid Suffolk Cesspool Service but I chalked it up to another life lesson on corrupt businesses until I received my notice from small claims court that he was suing me. I have filed complaints with the Suffolk County Consumer Affairs and the BBB against Mid Suffolk Cesspool Service. I'm just afraid like many cesspool companies that the owner Donald Schober will change the business name. By filing complaint with government agencies and writing this review I sincerely hope that no one else has to go through the ordeal that my family has experienced with cesspool cleanup. It is too easy for a company to take advantage of home owners during cesspool problems. They know that you need the problem fixed ASAP and that you probably don't have much knowledge about septic tanks and cesspools. read more

I hired Mid Suffolk Cesspool to perform a preventative cesspool maintenance service. Bernie and I spoke over the phone and he explained what would occur and then later that same week came out to do a discovery effort. Having never done a service before at the house I wasn't sure where everything was located though I had the original site survey. Bernie spent a couple hours discovering the cesspool actually there were two, and also my septic tank which is partly located under my walkway. After providing the estimate we scheduled a date / time for Mid Suffolk Cesspool and Router to perform the work. On the day of the job Bernie and his team showed up and got to work quickly and efficiently. They managed to cut away the grass on the law to access the cesspool and later were able to replace it with minimal damage to the lawn. The septic tank took a little more effort but Bernie and his team found the location to the hatch after cutting away some of the walkway and afterwards installed a new manhole cover with a seal so that any future service work would be much easier to execute. The team repaired the walkway area and installed new asphalt around the manhole cover to after cementing it in place. Lastly Joe on the team updated my new land survey document with distance makers for the cesspools and septic tank locations. I plan to take them back to my land surveyor and have the survey documents updated. On the whole an excellent job and will definitely be using them again for my next service call. read more

I have lived in my home since 1987. The act of going down to the basement, to run a snake down the sewer line, became rather predictable; occurring every one to two month's or less. After growing up in Smithtown and seeing my father go through the same episodes; I figured this was part of being a proud homeowner. The only similarity was the houses were built within 10 yrs of each other; 1960 and 1973. Like my fathers experience I felt the snake reach a certain point that felt as though an unremovable obstruction was present leading to the continuous blockages. I put on my engineering cap and measured out to the suspected problem. Digging down I found the joint between the cast pipe and some sort of black paper looking pipe. The paper pipe had tree roots Infiltrating and caused the "paper" pipe to become constricted---Time to call the professionals. I spoke to Bernie from Mid Suffolk Cesspool and gave a description of my episodes. Bernie's reply; "very common in homes built in that era to have utilized "Orangeburg" pipe (Google it). The next day Bernie showed up and pumped my septic tank and replaced the main line with new PVC. No more problems, I can open the "U" trap cover in the basement and actually hear the waterfall going into the septic tank--clean as a whistle. This review is a few months overdue! Great service from Mid Suffolk Cesspool. We had recently bought a house & weren't sure about the condition of the cesspool. I spoke with another company initially to ask about servicing the cesspool but was told to only call them if we had a problem & felt they couldn't be bothered. I saw an ad for Mid Suffolk & Christine was so pleasant on the phone. She took time to explain everything & pricing ranges. Jimmy came by about a week later & worked super hard to locate our cesspool. Our house was built in 1975 & apparently never serviced! Jimmy was great in taking the time to discuss our options & show us what was going on. We needed a new cap so Rob came by too to assist. So friendly & professional as well! In the end cost a little more than I anticipated but it was hard to estimate cost when no one knew the condition of the cesspool. They did offer a veteran discount which was appreciated:)They drained the tanks& built a new cap. In the future our cesspool maintenance will be so easy. I called Mid-Suffolk in the hopes of receiving same day service and they really delivered! At first I was scheduled for late afternoon, which was fine, but they called me back a little later to see if they could come earlier. Bernie responded and the first thing he wanted to do was diagnose the problem, sharing with me that pumping the cesspool is not what always has to happen. He was right... Bernie proceeded to hydro-jet the tank, which allowed it to drain properly. He then applied chemicals, closed it back up, and we were good to go. In the past other companies have come in and pumped it, and charged us more than double the amount. Bernie was personable, knew his trade, and was a true pleasure. He explained everything to me, cleaned up the job site nicely, and made me realize that I need to hold onto Mid-Suffolk's number for the next time. Recently one evening I saw that water had spilled out of the wasteline vent on the side of my house. Fearing that I had a full cesspool I called a few companies for emergency service. 1st company sounded like they didn't even want to be bothered, due to the age of my system (early 70's), and just winged a price of $850 + they wanted $75 a foot for digging out the cover! 2nd company sent 2 guys out and wanted $850 too. They seemed confused as to the exact location of the cesspool and I didn't want them digging up my back yard trying to find it. We called Mid Suffolk and within a couple hours Bernie showed up, very quickly found and dug out the cover, inspected the condition of the tank and pinpointed the problem as a clog in the wasteline trap. Not only fixed the problem but explained clearly just how the whole system works and gave great advice about maintaining it in the future. Very reasonable in price too. We had a problem that required replacing a collapsed exit pipe from the house to the cesspool. The new location required cutting into the basement slab and also through the sunken patio outside. We contacted a number of cesspool companies, all of which said they needed to bring in heavy equipment to do the digging which would have destroyed a major area of our sunken patio, including the retaining walls and landscaping. Finally, we had Mid Suffolk Cesspool come and take a look. They said they could do the job by hand and they did. They broke through our basement floor, laid a new pipe and connected it to our cesspool all in one day, thereby minimizing the masonry repair, preserving our trees, and saving us money. The owner is the worst guy to deal with. He has an attitude problem. Every thing has to be his way or he will leave job in the middle. He showed up to my house after confirmation from both side to get the job done, but left without doing the job because he couldn't find parking in my driveway.
