What an unexpectedly positive experience. The Microsoft Experience Store on Fifth Ave truly impressed me. The variety of products and the hands-on setup make it easy to explore everything, especially the Surface line. On two out of my three visits, the representatives were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful with my Surface 7 Laptop. Robert, and on another visit Steven, were exceptional. They took the time to assess my accessibility needs, carefully researched options before making any adjustments, and made sure I fully understood what they were doing and how it would help me. The store itself is sleek and modern, with a fully accessible flat glass automatic door and plenty of turning radius throughout the space. As a wheelchair user, I felt welcomed and comfortable every time I visited. The staff made sure I was supported and satisfied without ever feeling rushed. I didn't explore the second-floor gaming area since I'm not an Xbox gamer, but overall, all three visits were consistently positive. Do NOT buy from the Microsoft Store if you don't live in NYC I purchased a Microsoft Surface Dock directly at the Microsoft Store in New York City. When I got home to Miami and plugged everything in correctly, the dock simply did not work. The Surface charges perfectly when connected directly to the wall -- but the dock itself is dead. Here's the unacceptable part: I was told the only place I can return or resolve this is the same physical store in NYC. No mail return. No remote solution. This is incomprehensible for a company the size of Microsoft. Selling defective hardware and then forcing customers to physically return to the same city is not "customer service" -- it's negligence. If you don't live in New York City or don't plan on returning soon, DO NOT BUY from this store. What should have been a premium experience turned into a complete waste of time and money. read more

To the Microsoft Board of Directors and Executive Leadership, As a former owner of two Surface laptops as well as multi-years of M365 subscriptions by the end of 2025, I am writing this last but least message during 2026 MLK day's weekend to raise a series of concerns that go beyond individual dissatisfaction and point to systemic customer-harm risks created by Microsoft's current approach to account security, AI-first customer support, and subscription governance. These issues resulted in my complete exit from the Microsoft ecosystem and, more importantly, expose reputational, regulatory, and trust liabilities for the company, especially to Copilot. 1. Account Security Design That Disenfranchises Long-Time and Elderly Customers Microsoft's account recovery and verification systems effectively lock out elderly users who cannot satisfy modern, behavior-based security heuristics. In my case, a family member lost access to an account held for over 20 years, with no human review, no exception path, and no remediation. This represents a structural failure: security systems optimized for scale now function as irreversible exclusion mechanisms for vulnerable populations. From a governance perspective, this raises questions about duty of care, accessibility, and long-term customer stewardship. 2. AI-First Support Without Human Override Microsoft's support model prioritizes automation and AI containment over resolution. When these systems fail--as they did repeatedly--customers encounter no meaningful escalation path. Human agents appear constrained by scripts and lack authority to correct system-generated harm. The net effect is a support architecture that can create damage but cannot reverse it. 3. Irreversible Financial Harm Caused by Support Actions During a support interaction regarding Game Pass billing for grandchildren, a Microsoft representative cancelled my grandson's subscription without consent. I was subsequently informed that: * the cancellation could not be reversed, * my previous pricing could not be restored, * and I must repurchase at a higher price. This occurred despite the service functioning correctly prior to contacting support. Regardless of internal policy, this violates basic principles of procedural fairness and introduces material trust risk. Support interactions should not worsen a customer's financial position--yet here, they did so permanently. 4. Fragmented Support Ownership and Accountability Contact channels--including those provided by Microsoft Experience Center staff--route customers into dead-end automation loops or globally distributed call centers with limited contextual understanding and authority. No single role owns resolution. Even this experience center's contact number at (212) 824-3100, the call would directly bring the client to overseas in a dead-end loop. No one is accountable for outcomes. A critical governance question follows: Can Microsoft leadership themselves resolve a complex, non-standard issue by using the same support channels provided to customers? 5. Strategic Impact: Loss of Trust and Revenue As a direct consequence of these systemic failures, I have exited Microsoft's hardware, software, and subscription ecosystem and redirected spending to competitors. I do not believe this outcome is unique. The design choices described above actively convert long-term customers into permanent losses. Conclusion: The issue is not one bad interaction, but a pattern * automation without accountability, * security without reversibility, * support without authority, * and policies without remediation. For all things Microsoft, Windows, Xbox this is the place to go. This is the mecca of Microsoft. Come in and try and demo some of the Xbox games and accessories. They also have some in-store special events sometimes. There's always plenty of people around to help you if you have any questions with anything. Well the items you buy here maybe more expensive than you can when you get something on sale, I don't feel bad about using this place as a showroom to order something online since no matter what Microsoft still gets your money. read more

As an Asian American immigrant living in Queens for the past few years--before, during, and after the pandemic--I visited the Microsoft Experience Center in New York multiple times. I went there for help with purchases, consultations, and troubleshooting related to my Microsoft 365 subscriptions, my Xbox and related services, and OneDrive apps on Apple devices like my iPhone and MacBook Air. I am writing this honest review after hearing a deeply disappointing story from my friend, Ms. Zhou, who was also a former customer at this location. It reminded me of my own experiences, especially with one particular Asian employee who consistently helped me with patience and kindness, even when others would not. Most employees there, as I experienced, seemed more focused on closing a sale than truly helping customers. When I had issues and wasn't ready to make another purchase, I felt ignored. On many occasions, it seemed like I wasn't "worth" their time unless I was spending money again. A few employees genuinely tried to help, but even they were often stopped by their managers, who apparently didn't want to "waste" time on support unless a new sale was guaranteed. As someone who is not fluent in English and not tech-savvy, I often felt judged or dismissed. This one Asian employee, however, took time, even during his lunch breaks, to answer my questions. Sadly, I noticed he disappeared a few months ago. No one could tell me what happened to him. I am deeply concerned about what kind of internal management culture exists at Microsoft that would discourage employees from helping customers with care. My questions to Microsoft are: Why are employees punished or pressured when they try to do the right thing? Are customers being silently judged on whether they're "qualified" to receive support based on how much they spend or how they look or speak? Why is it so hard for your local management to support sincerity, fairness, and simple human decency? I also noticed, with disappointment, that some managers from marginalized communities (Black, Muslim, etc.) were also part of this poor customer treatment. I had hoped for better understanding from them, but perhaps the problem lies deeper in the corporate culture? Despite all this, I gave this review 2 stars instead of 1, because of the sincere help I received from that one employee who is no longer there. He made me feel like I mattered, and I'm grateful for that. Microsoft should reflect on how it treats both its employees and its customers, because how you treat your people is how you treat the customers. I have gone to the Microsoft Store(s) on a number of occasions over the past decade or more to resolve various issues. When there were locations throughout the Greater New York Area, the techs were often found to be capable and competent in their areas of expertise ( hardware vs software, etc.). To my knowledge, the 5th Ave store is now the only store remaining. I had been locked out of my Microsoft accounts for a couple of months and attempts to rectify the problem on my end were unsuccessful, prompting multiple visits to the store on 5th Ave. With one notable exception, results up to this point were underwhelming. I surmise that I am not alone in suffering this difficulty (see 'Will I' 12/18/24). A company that respected its customer base should be expected to recognize its systemic shortcomings and take measures to correct them, if they actually cared. On my most recent re-visit, this past December, I was assigned a technician who seemed unable to help me resolve this thorny, ongoing problem. This being the 3rd or 4th visit to Microsoft, I insisted on seeking further help and eventually I was referred to another (? more senior ?) member of his team. Shomari appeared to be coordinating other team members on the floor, but gracefully stepped in upon request, to address my problem. He re-explained the obstacles to freeing up my account and then, sat down and walked me through the process that might get me started on the path to resolution. In consultation with another savvy tech, Kevin, various techniques were employed to try and get me back into the game. Regrettably, I am still struggling with the lockout, but am truly grateful for the direction and care that Shomari lent me in my quest. I can only hope that the Store would staff their facility with more technologists of his caliber. The rating is for this technician's expertise and customer service offerings. I need it back. 45 minutes later when I tried to phone the store to check-- at the number listed AS THE ACTUAL Microsoft store in Manhattan --i was routed to an online answering center in India. She said there was NO way she could re-route my call there, no way I could directly phone the ("experience") store myself. What kind of illegal, misleading advertisement is this?? My appointment started 15 minutes late. While waiting, I was offered the chance to sit in their "living room" area next to a stranger playing video games. When I was taken in for my appointment, the technician was able to find a solution for my problem very quickly. I felt that he was honest and respectful. This is an update. My original review is embedded in it. But the update is this: in the intervening time, the laptop I bought from Microsoft has been unrepairable anywhere. And now the screen is showing some light cracks -although I have taken good care of it. These Microsoft Surface computers are, to my mind, and in my opinion, not worth the investment. Below is more of my reasons for thinking so. Here's my complaint, and you should know about if you are thinking of buying an expensive computer from MS: I bought my Surface Book 3 for nearly $2K in January 2021. It's out of warranty for the last six months. That is, I relied on the one-year warranty. My computer looks fine. I do not believe it has suffered any trauma. But it has stopped functioning. $2K down the drain. -That is a lot of money. They won't repair. It's two-part: a tablet and a keypad/touchpad with second battery (the "base"). The tablet, which has the motherboard, chipset, screen and works independently of the base works perfectly, still. Only the base is broken: the touchpad does not work, and the lights on the keyboard do not come on. The base has much less of the technology in it -which is why it works as a tablet without it. I set up an appointment and came in. After ten minutes a very nice man walked over and looked at my computer. He ran it through a very simple troubleshooting function on the computer itself, through 'settings.' It took five minutes. He told me it was not a software problem, so he could not help me. Really, end of story. I asked how they could repair it quickly, so that I'd be up and running again. The associate and a manager told me that they could NOT REPAIR it -at all. Instead, I was given the option of turning in my computer and paying $599 (plus tax) for a refurbished replacement with a 90 day warranty. Let's consider this business practice -I think it's an outrageous scam. Not only do they refuse to repair their expensive product, or "stand behind it," which is less than two years old, but in order to get a refurbished (used) replacement, I must also tender over my partly broken computer. How much is mine worth? After all, the tablet still functions perfectly. I am sure they will repair the base easily -they will, in fact, do for themselves what they will not do for me, their customer. They will then re-sell my computer as "refurbished" to the next customer. So my cost to have a functioning computer, after having purchased one for about $2K, is $599, plus tax, plus the value of my old computer -which, even discounted for age, I would put at $800 conservatively. So, my cost to correct the problem is actually $599 + tax + $800. That is insanely unreasonable. I bought a MS Surface and went to the Microsoft Store expecting that they were -at least- like other computer companies, for example, Dell, HP, Lenovo and, especially, Apple. Each of these companies has computers that, when a part breaks, it can be changed out and repaired with a replacement part -after all keyboards and touchpads are simple discrete parts. I have had Dell, Lenovo and Apple. With the first two, you can go to an authorized repair company and they will replace the part -touchpad, keyboard or even hard-drive. Apple goes even further and their customer service at the 'Genius Bar' is immediate, when possible, or parts repair so long as available, no matter how old your computer or phone is. Sometimes they even give a 'loaner.' But Microsoft is, in fact, just the opposite. They want your computer to be obsolete as early as possible. After all, my computer was out of warranty only six months. And it is not the case I expected something for free. But neither did I expect MS to try to squeeze me for as much money as they possibly could. So, apparently, there is no reasonable repair for my computer -unless I can find an 'unauthorized' repair shop that can get it working. Or give up on it and buy elsewhere. read more

Thoroughly disappointed- I came here during my birthday trip in 2019, & it was awesome! They had games to play & win a Minecraft Pig, & we got a tour of the whole facility which was awesome! We got to see their gaming arena & play virtual reality games. After the tour they gave us a T-shirt all for free! My brother & I went for the Willy Wonka experience, and I was hoping to arrange a tour for us - but the manager basically said now a days they only offer them to more "important people" who are looking to wholesale buy their products. They only had the front open for us & the Willy Wonka experience was ridiculous. There was only one booth & they make you figure out an 8 symbol code that changes each time. It takes FOREVERRRRRRR. especially as it's just random. Only after cracking the code can you receive a marble which correlates to your prize.. either a hot chocolate, chocolate truffles, or a chocolate controller. (We didn't see anyone get the controller). The employee overseeing this the first half an hour we were waiting was very careless & snarky about it. At least the next woman employee actually supervised it & would help both kids & adults keeping track of what they already tried & what's left. This made it go much faster. You're looking on average at least 5 minutes per person. It'd be so much better & more efficient if you just chose one symbol and received a marble instead of guessing a whole code. Most annoyingly with the hot chocolate, you only get a quarter of a small cup. And they won't let anyone else in your party get one unless they play the game themselves- for everyone's sake, you'd think they'd just let everyone in the party get a cup to move things along. My Microsoft experience was nothing short of amazing. When I first arrived the Microsoft expert outside immediately came over to check me in (there was a little wait due to the launch of a new device but it was okay, I didn't feel forgotten about) after about 10 minutes I was able to skip the line and wait in the lobby which I appreciated. Once in the lobby I was introduced to another Microsoft expert Taquin & he was very knowledgeable in product service as well as product application, I was also given a Microsoft gift goodie bag for just being there which was pretty cool ! I left with an investment and more knowledge about the laptop that I bought. Thank you to both the employees of Microsoft for making my experience one of excellence! The fact that they were knowledgeable and listened to my needs and applied them appropriately was greatly appreciated! Unlike other tech companies that I've recently been to. The reason why I gave it four stars instead of 5 was simply because of the waiting outside & it seemed a little understaffed, & I drove 1hr & 30 min however I understand, all of those factors are external it's just what I like to call a transparency moment. Came here hoping to buy a power cord for my surface pro 2 as it got burned. Guess what? The store doesn't carry it anymore since it's an older version!! Really? And then I found out that there was a recall for the power cord in 2016 and again early this year. That explained why I had problem with it twice. I ended up having to order one on Amazon. When I walked in, I wasn't greeted by staff right away, unlike the typical Apple store where there are many "genius" around. I do still love my surface pro 2 very much. It's been my best work toy ever! It's so light and compact. I just hope that it will last for another few years. read more

I have lost many 100's of files from my PC due to Microsoft, but my biggest claim is because MS lack of assistance. I am a musician and use MS Excel and Word actively (including on stage) to get words and chords for songs our combo performs live. I lost all this due to an HP PC crash and spent about 6 months rebuilding and recovering at a considerable cost. I had to buy a new computer (Dell laptop) and was forced by Microsoft to buy a Microsoft 365 package as opposed to onboard apps for my file management. At first I got my recovered files to be functional and I thought our band was back in business. But then, Microsoft ONE DRIVE backed up my files in a cloud. AND removed the files (all of them) from my PC without a means to get them back on my PC. Turns out that Microsoft expects me to now work always on line and my Excel and Word Apps are not even located on my computer. I tried online operation and it is far too cumbersome for band use. Plus, the internet is not even available for much of my PC usage. When I went to MS help (many times) they only steer me to existing QA's which has wasted weeks of my time. When I finally got a live person by saying I would close my MS account, they put me on indefinite hold and finally dropped my call. Followup calls went to the online merry-go-round. No more live. So they have stolen all my hard work and thrown me under a bus. I think its time for a class action suite, I don't care what their conditions for usage state. Nothing justifies theft or destruction of intellectual property and ambivalence toward a customer's many hours of unsuccessful troubleshooting. read more

Microsoft is a fairly cool concept store which as a brit I'm not used to (Microsoft only have one store in the UK which is in London), this is their main NYC location on 677 5th Ave. The store broadcasts most of the latest Microsoft technology from the Xbox to some of their tablets, it is over multiple floors and they also plan regular events in store. One thing I like is how they publish the events online in advance so you know what is exactly going on that day (Apple take note) rather than coming into the store and hoping for the best. I do feel the nearby Apple Store is better, however - as I find the tech to be a little repeated here and the service isn't as good, but still that doesn't mean this isn't a cool addition to Fifth Avenue as I do quite like the Microsoft Store, but it needs to do more to wow and excite me. 3* read more

I purchased a surface Pro 11 recently and it seems to have unresolvable issues as a result of the arm processor and a bug that has been known and uncorrected for three years. My mistake for buying it in the store as I live 3,000 miles away and the store does not actually answer its phone. As it turns out, any returns must be done in person. Unfortunately discovering their terrible return policy about four hours to find out while on multiple holds with their international support. Looks like they take issue with hiring Americans. The support is absolutely shameful and I am amazed that this company has any PC sales at all given their horrific customer service. The solution finally suggested to me by the brilliant support person was to find someone in New York to ship the computer to who would then take it in and return it for me. All the while, the return window is closing. I'm guessing there are many Microsoft stores lining the streets of hell. read more

Just had the weirdest/worst experience here. I come in to get a new charger. The guy takes me to the back and then proceeds to spend 10 minutes on the computer not talking to me (keep in mind all I need is a charger). He's on the phone with someone too talking about what they should get for lunch while I'm waiting there. Finally someone comes out with a charger and puts it on the counter and he tries to charge me $130! For a charger. I say, sorry I'm just gonna find one online. He then proceeds to lie and say "don't use a third party charger they will completely break your entire device." Yeah ok dude. That doesn't sound manipulative at all. I have tried to purchase a Surface Laptop 4 twice with a terrible delivery company followed by a custmer service rep who just is going through the motions. They would not look at any other delievery options just said sorry that they dont pick the company. Really Microsoft cannot choose a reliable vendor unbelieveable. This make has changed me to campain for HP which is too bad as I have been promoting Surface to my work with those who purchase however not now. My surface pro, after two years of good working condition, all of a sudden could not turn on and had nothing but a "black screen." I brought it to the Microsoft Store at 677 5th Avenue and was helped by Taquin -- who is incredible. He immediately made me feel at ease and less frantic, he fixed the problem and taught me some tools about how to use it so that I would not encounter this problem again and, at my request, showed me some of the newer products that I had in mind to purchase at a later date. When I came in I was dejected and frantic that I would not be able to complete an important deliverable. Thanks to Taquin, I left happy and with a sparkling, functional, better than new laptop and concrete plans to buy a new one soon to augment my office and home work. Went in to service my Surface 9. Was greeted by a worker who was very nice and diagnosed my computer as defective and was concerned because it was 4 months old. He stated that the computer would need to be replaced because it is a defect. He prepped to replace my device and then the manger intervened to validate the replacement. Store manager refused to honor the 1 year warranty of the computer. And replace or service it, even though he was able to bring up the serial number and verify my account. And verify the warranty and the age of the device. His reasoning was that it was brought from Best Buy and not his store and he couldn't verify whether it was refurbished or not. He then stated that it was brought from a third party because it was Best Buy Business. He even asked for my receipt from Best Buy! Which I showed him and he was able to see clearly that it came from Best Buy. When told that any refurnished device will be identify as such by law he agreed but stood by his own personal choice of not honoring the warranty. When asked to define third party he couldn't and stated that Best Buy wasn't a third party but Best Buy Business was a third party. In addition he was talking around me like I was not sitting there nor like I would follow his simple language. He then proceeded to say for me to send it back to Microsoft so "they can deal with it" as he stated. In addition he stated that he is not sure of when I'll get my device back or replaced or if I'll get any device back. When I asked why wouldn't receive my device or a device he just blinked blankly and provided no clarification of his statement. His refusal appeared to be personal in nature and fueled by his ignorance on third party and company warranty policies. This was one of the lamest customer service experiences I've ever experienced. Microsoft Failure to Deliver Surface Computer or Take responsibility: On 2/15/22 Microsoft claims to have delivered computer. They state the GLS the carrier actually left it in front of the outside door to our apartment building. (if true he did not follow posted instructions to ring buzzer with all delivers & we will buzz you in so package can be left in a secure area.) They did not: · Follow posted delivery instructions · Ring the buzzer · Bring it inside to a sheltered area Basically, they left it on a busy street without even notifying us that it was there. This was unbelievably stupid and incompetent. In any case, I never received it, and they refuse to refund the charge. I've been meaning to visit this store for a while since I've been thinking about getting a new laptop. So one day I visited the store and an employee named, Jose, greeted me asking if I needed help with anything. He was so nice and helpful. Very informative as well providing me with great advice on trying to find the right option for me. I didn't end up getting anything yet, but when I do which will be soon, I will surely go to him to purchase the laptop since the he made my experience very memorable in a great way for the Microsoft store! I was considering purchasing a new laptop and I spotted the Microsoft store on 5th Avenue and decided to look at the Surface Book or Surface Pro 4. I was undecided but I was very impressed with the design of the store. So I did a little research and found that this is intended to be the flagship store for Microsoft's and the first to have more than one floor. They are putting that space to good use. It has a open door front that leads you into a clean design layout with tables of with key Microsoft product just like Apples does at their store. The second floor features a large community theater, where store employees will hold training sessions and other events. And they have their technical support specialist up there also.There's also a huge section of the main floor devoted to Xbox, and a dedicated third party PC showcase, which will feature a slew of consumer and business hardware. The best part for me was how cool it was inside and a easy escape from the NYC 90+ degrees summer heat. read more
