Apple contracts out Genius Bar visits to them. Mike's Tech asked me about my AirPods. I told them I couldn't get them to work, I followed the instructions online to test them and that it's under warranty. Mike's Tech told me to stop by Apple Store to get a new pair since they didn't have any in stock. I went to Apple and they required a full diagnostic of the AirPods. Point of story is Apple contracts with this business who serves absolutely zero purpose other than wasting your time with an unnecessary visit. read more

Once upon a time, I loved these guys, they were super helpful and would really go out of their way to help solve your problems. NOW they are a problem, not a solution. I think they are still good technically, but after trying for a month and a half to get my iMac Pro battery and iPhone battery changed they made it so stupid, one obstacle after another, NO YOU CANNOT KEEP MY PHONE AND LAPTOP for A WEEK PLUS!! Edit: I'm updating to two stars because the owner sincerely apologized in person and refunded me for the rental I was using. One-star reviews are correct here, don't ignore them. I went in after my MacBook's screen started glitching out randomly during use. The guy inspecting it agreed there was something wrong and that it was under warranty (this guy is literally the only good thing about the place since he was actually friendly and helpful). A week later (when my MacBook was supposed to be already repaired), I got no service updates, so I had to reach out to them myself. After emailing, they tell me "their email must not have gone through," and that the screen issue was caused by "accidental damage" even though I have never once dropped or spilled a single thing on my computer. You cannot tell a customer that their bill will be $0 and then reveal it's actually going to be $800 while they're under the impression it's being repaired under warranty. read more

I had an overall positive experience at Mike's Tech Shop. I brought in my ailing Macbook Pro to Mike's because it had the most available time slots when I was booking an appointment from the Apple Support app. I was able to meet with the staff (Geraldo) quickly, and he was able to point out what is wrong with the computer very fast. Geraldo explained that it's most likely that the computer must be shipped to the support center so that the logic board can be replaced. When I mentioned that I just had my hard drive replaced less than two months ago, Geraldo was able to pull up the record and communicate with the Apple Support to find out if I can get full warranty for the repair this time. It took a whole day for Mike's to get back with Apple's response that the repair this time will not be covered by the warranty. However, it was nice for Mike's to let me know that and to suggest to me to go talk to the guys at the genius bar so that I can get a better deal. Consequently, I visited the genius bar and was able to get the refund from my previous repair (replacing the hard drive) at the genius bar. My take on this whole experience was that, if you're having issues with the apple products, you should head to the genius bar first. Because Mike's was a middle man between me and Apple, Apple didn't give details on why I could not be compensated in any way the first time around. I'd also suggest booking a genius bar reservation in person rather than booking it through the app. While the appointment for the Fifth Avenue store wasn't available until the next day on the app, I was able to book an appointment in person for a slot an hour later that day. read more

I am going to detail my experience with Mike's Tech Shop exactly as it happened. It speaks for itself. May 9th - I called Mike's tech shop and asked if they could create a disk image of my hard drive for each of the three profiles on my MacBook Pro. They replied yes and quoted me a price. I then scheduled an appointment for May 11th. May 11th - I arrived on time to my appointment. I had to wait to be seen, which is fine. I then met with an associate. I again asked them if they could create the disk image and they said yes. I gave them the logins for each of my profiles and tested them in front of the associate. They advised that they only needed one but I made sure to give them all three. They said that it would take five days to complete the request. I told them that I was moving to Los Angeles soon as I just graduated. May 12th - I received an email that my request would be completed by Wednesday, May 17th. May 15h - I received a call from Mike's Tech shop that they couldn't login to my laptop. I then went to Mike's tech shop the same day to show them that the same logins worked. May 16th - I received a call from Mike's Tech Shop that they could not create the disk image and would be returning my laptop to me. Now to my opinion: This is a store that is an Apple authorized retailer. In name only. That had multiple opportunities to tell me that they were not capable of creating a disk image. They quoted me a price over the phone, had me schedule an appointment and then visit them twice overall after that initial phone appointment and they didn't even try. And every time I went in I was greeted rudely and treated very poorly throughout the entire appointment. Do not go here. Go anywhere else in the city because you will be treated better and hopefully you will get an honest answer about their capabilities, like actually trying to login to a laptop when you have the correct login stored in your system. I would have gone anywhere else and it was important that I get this done before I left New York. Don't make my mistake. Say no to Mike. read more

My laptop was recently the victim of a spill, and the Apple Store referred me to Mike's for data transfer/recovery. Not only was I able to get an appointment the same day, but my external drive with the data on it was done within just a few business days. Other people saying Mike's overcharges, but I found that it was a great value. Their website quotes a minimum of $300 for data recovery; I paid just under $200 for a data transfer (bringing my own external drive). The guys in the shop were quick and polite during both drop off and pick up, and they were able to get all of my data off of my old laptop. Would definitely come back for any future tech issues. read more

Terrible.. waste of time... save your money, time and effort. Had a really bad experience.. didn't seem like the technician (tall guy with a beard) was too interested. Took my mac book air for repairs, as the mouse track pad wasn't working. Initially the technician tried attaching an external mouse to resolve the issue but on realizing that it might be more than one issue, he gave me a flat quote of $500 for repairs. There was not much effort made to understand and explain to me the exact issue. When I tried inquiring about my options he tried to close down the conversation. You can understand when someone isn't interested in helping you. I visited apple showroom on fifth Avenue the next day, the Genius Bar reviewed the issue in detail and informed me that they should be able to repair my laptop for $96 You rather wait for an appointment at an Apple showroom than waste time visiting a bunch of bored and unhelpful technicians, although authorized by Apple. You do NOT "wanna be like Mike". I first came across Mike's Tech Shop in October 2019. I requested a backup of my iPhone and purchased an external drive for the data. My interactions with the Salesperson, Alberto Moreno, and the Technician, Rafael Guzman, were amicable and professional. I dealt mostly with Rafael who was very polite and responsive. Although a bit pricey, I was pleased with the customer experience from start to finish. I recommended Mike's Tech Shop to several friends and vowed to return again. Fast forward to this morning. What happened? I remember how pleasant everyone was (in the store and on the phone). But when I called just now, the individual I spoke to was rude and simply not helpful. I asked for Rafael and was told he no longer worked there. I asked for Alberto ... same. I then realized that the nice people at Mike's found work elsewhere. I don't blame them. I couldn't work for someone like the guy who answered my call. Seemed as though he was upset ... with his life. He said that he could not provide me with pricing over the phone. Okay. And when I asked to speak to a technician, he said "they're all busy". Stern. At no point did he offer to have someone call me back. He knew I was a repeat customer, yet didn't ask my name. Mike, if you're reading this, your RECEPTIONIST is killing your business. BEWARE, PRICE GOUGING AT ITS BEST!! I accidentally cracked my 12" MacBook Pro screen and was referred here by Apple since all of their NYC stores are closed during COVID. When I spoke to the Apple technician, they informed me that this store was an authorized Apple partner, and they should be able to assist me with all repairs. I made an appointment for the next day, and before even turning the laptop on, one of their employees let me know, "this will be very pricey." They quoted me at $750 to replace my screen and a 2 week turnaround and $860 if I sent it to Apple with a 3 week turnaround. I was expecting to pay a lot since I don't have AppleCare, but I wasn't expecting that. Of course I didn't leave my laptop with them because 2 weeks is entirely too long to complete a 2 hour (at most) job. I left and called Apple and asked for a quote, it was $485, including shipping. It took Apple a total of 3 days to ship me the box, receive my laptop, fix it, and return it to me. SO CONFUSED at the capitalistic behavior at Mike's Tech Shop. How do you charge more than Apple? Why raise your prices during a pandemic? Is that even legal? And wtf were you planning on doing with my laptop for 2 - 3 weeks?? Save your coins. Go to Apple. read more

Absolute travesty. Dp not go here. I went to Mike's Tech Shop two weeks ago because my computer had crashed. I booked for 11:40am and I was kept waiting for half an hour before Michael Rubin proceeded to look at my computer; he asked me if I had backed up my data, and I said yes, everything but my most recent project. He then said that he would send the computer to Apple to be fixed on warranty. He never said my data was at risk. On the advice of a friend, I contacted the shop later that day, just to make sure they wouldn't delete my data. An associate there said my data would probably be deleted. I asked how could they delete my data without informing me. The associate tried to recall my computer, but it was too late. Weeks of work down the drain. Rubin, at the shop, then tried to pass the buck onto me, saying that he always informs clients their data could be deleted. (Once again, he never did so.) I return to the shop just now to collect my (wiped) computer, and Rubin is there. He refuses to apologise directly, just saying "I'm sorry you feel this way." Then he shuffles off to the back of the shop to collect my computer... and returns with someone else's mac. Luckily I notice, and call him out. He says "well it's just gonna be a game of he said she said..." The guy couldn't even meet my eye. Frankly this is among the worst service I have ever received at a shop anywhere. Beware! read more

I needed power cords for my Mac laptops. Didn't want to go to the Apple Store- too big too crazy too many people. I prefer smaller/independent places. Mike's has great Covid-protocols in place and an easy-peasy sign-in system. They have a great stock - I walked out with what I needed in under 15 minutes. What I want to highlight most is the professionalism and welcome of the people there. I misheard one of the guys- thought he said something which made me uncomfortable. I said something to him and he assured me he hadn't said what I though he had-we are all wearing masks and it is really tough sometimes to understand what someone is saying. What I truly appreciated was 1. I was in an environment where I felt I could speak up and 2. when it was clear I was in the wrong I was treated with graciousness and understanding. This is one of those days where I wish there's a zero star rating. This business was unhelpful and putting down the customers, every step of the way. The technicians shut me down and did not give me a chance to explain the emergency situation, even with an appointment for a later date, and embarrassed me in front of other customers shaming me that I was cutting in line. When I called on the phone, customer service representative claimed that if the appointment is made pass warranty, then out of warranty rates would be charged, unless I obtain exception from Apple. To paraphrase, "we have no control over what rate Apple decides to charge," pushing the responsibility back onto Apple's shoulders. The lack of flexibility to handle this situation is a reflection of poor training. This small business shows no interest nor wants my patronage. Would not do business with them again. read more

I used Mike's Tech Shop to replace my lost air pod pro case. I had the choice to either get the replacement from Apple or from another certified carrier, and Mike's was one of them. I chose Mike's to support a small business. They ended up charging me total of $136 ($120 for the case and then tax) for the replacement. Apple lists online that the price of a replacement case for Air pod pros is $99. I am not sure why they charged so much more but I definitely won't be going here again. read more

I had a problem which Apple couldn't address over the phone; they referred me to Mike's. There was a slight delay in getting an appointment, but once they took care of me, the service was excellent: knowledgable, friendly, professional. The tech guy was patient, explaining options clearly and helped me decide on the best course of action. He helped me understand how to prevent the problem in the future (this was the second time it had happened), something which Apple did not do. Safe environment inside the shop with mask enforcement. Good check-in system so you do not waste time. Very friendly and understanding that you are freaking out. in the future, I will go straight here, instead of to Apple, where I had always gone before. read more

But, what I got was a used refurbished pair with only a few months left on the original Apple Care. They refused to provide a credit for selling me something they misrepresented and for claiming to sell me Apple Care which I did not actually get. Encouraged by all these glowing reviews, I called Mike's to ask if they did Apple wireless keyboard repair. I explained the methods by which I tried to un-stick a key, and the person with whom I spoke said, "Bring it in!" So I brought it in, waited my turn, and the minute I got to explain what was going on with my keyboard, the out-of-Central Casting tech millennial (sorry, rational/reasonable Millennials!) cut me off, saying, "We don't repair keyboards. The labor starts at $150. But we sell them..." as he gestured to the keyboards on a high shelf. "How much would it be to replace mine?' I asked. He replied, "I dunno--about $99." Then he turned around and started doing something else, clearly done with this level of unhelpful output. "Rude" doesn't adequately cover his tone, but the appropriate words would render this review un-publishable. He couldn't even be bothered to try to sell me a new one--or provide rationale as to why my keyboard couldn't be repaired--or even looked at. I've read reviews here that say positive things about repairing MacBook keyboards, I called to verify they did such work--so what gives? So Mike's is clearly all about the planned obsolescence of peripherals. If I wanted that message, I could have gone to the Apple Store. There are two people in my home who each own four Apple devices apiece, plus additional shared ones. Mike's will not be the place we seek repair, advice, or purchase any additional ones. Pity, because we're very big on keeping our funds distribution within our neighborhood, with local businesses, whenever possible. Have a better Apple guru in the greater Chelsea/Flatiron area?
