This is one of the biggest Michaels stores I've ever been to! It has a huge private parking lot and a couple spaces for pick up parking. In addition, this location is very well stocked and has all the yarn you could want to make all the blankets you'll never finish. I'm on attempt #4 now lol. My regret is that they don't have a large selection of yarn and you can never find staff that can help you find the proper yarn for a project. Again another awkward visit went to the yarn area where not one, but four employees were in the area three tt women standing around and a latino young male walking around the yarn area and standing with a device in his hand. No one doing go backs or anything. My mom ask one tattooed yt woman about any more big twist yarn she did not scan the item or go above and beyond to check. I notice since they have self check out the employees are less genuine in helping and just standing around. Do not come here for UPS services!! The UPS access point at Michaels is barely functional. I've only used it to pick up packages. Almost every time, the staff has trouble finding my packages, and they act like they're doing me a huge favor. Michaels usually has just one person managing the whole front of the store, so I have to go through the regular checkout line. The staff member who "helped" me today had an attitude for some reason. The first thing she said to me (after I spent 10+ minutes waiting) was, "Are you SURE it's here? Check the tracking. That will tell you if it's here or not." Seriously? Do I look like an idiot or something? Why the hell would I be there if UPS hadn't said my packages were ready for pickup? She could only find one of my packages. Well, really, I spotted it from afar while she was grumbling about people not writing the last names on the packages. Now I have to return on another day because she said she couldn't find the second package. Hopefully I'll get a different person next time. By the way, this staff member was super polite to all the people in the checkout line, so either she has an issue with UPS customers or she had an issue with me because I look dumb. If Michaels is going to offer this "service," they should staff the access point properly. The previous time I picked up a package here, the staff member (a different woman) was much friendlier, but she also seemed confused. I showed her my id, and when I asked her if she needed to see my UPS confirmation code, she said, "well, no, I have your last name." Then she started looking through the packages. "Last name was Chen, right?" LMAO lady you literally just saw my id five minutes ago and claimed you remembered my last name. She wasn't even close. She just saw an Asian last name and assumed it was mine. After my experience today, I changed my pickup point to an actual UPS store. I can't deal with these fools from Michaels anymore. Michaels is great when I'm a regular customer and I don't have to interact with their staff. The only reason I'm giving this place two stars instead of one is because they did hold my packages. And I recall there was a guy who was pretty helpful before. But after two bad experiences, I can't return to this access point. I agree with the other reviewer who said UPS should shut this place down, because Michaels obviously doesn't want to help UPS customers. read more

This place is huge. Perhaps too huge. For somebody who not often shops at Michael's it's incredibly hard to find something in this large of a store. This is why I would rely on an employee to help me navigate. Prices are always a little on the high side at Michael's so that's expected. After walking around the entire store to not find the item I needed, I did however find that there were no workers in this Costco sized store. The sole worker is at the front as a cashier. So I waited in line with no items to ask a simple question. When I got to the front, the cashier told me that I could just pay at the kiosk if I'm using card so she won't have to help me. I told her I was just there to ask a question. She seemed nice enough, but she only pointed me in the direction of the store where I should look for my item. And despite not being very busy, she did not show me to the section. So I went wandering through the store again only to not find my item. I decided that since I can't find a pair of craft scissors in a craft store that I probably should look elsewhere for these scissors. On my way out she asked if I was able to find the scissors, so I told her no. She said that her store probably didn't have any. I replied that it was probably more the fact that the store is huge and I can't find anything. She replied "Okay, well have a nice day sir." and let me walk out. I just can't believe how little people care these days. If I acted like this at work, I'd never sell anything. Join the Michaels rewards. It's free and you'll get coupons. I'm an avid knitter so I buy a lot of yarn. I really like their house brand of yarn. The store is always really clean and organized. They also have self checkout which is great so you don't have to wait in line. You can also do pickup and they have plenty of parking. Really enjoy this location. Not all Michael's stores are this well maintained and organized so I really appreciate the shopping environment here. This Michaels has become a total joke - ridiculously understocked in many depts, I used to shop in. Seriously you have a 50/50 chance if finding what you want. I came in looking for a product called Goo Gone , an adhesive remover. Why does San Mateo, San Jose and every other Michael's on the Peninsula carry it but Daly City??? Ok fine you don't have it, well maybe I can get some glue...yeah good luck with that...At least 50% of the glue is out of stock (see photo). Ok what about scissors? Again at least half the stock is out of stock! They long gave up on the hobby section and for the past several years have been letting it die a slow death. (see photo). Seriously I guess I'm asking too much for a CRAFT store to have a decent selection of scissors and glue... I can tell you without hesitation it is a shadow of what it used to be when it first opened.....save yourself time and hassle and go to San Mateo (the weather's better too!). read more

My friend and I came here to get some art supplies and wanted to go to self checkout. However, as soon as we stepped in line the worker was yelling at us. Quickly, a big line formed and everyone in line was getting very upset and impatient. Most of the self checkout machines were broken and when customers asked where the cashiers were, the one worker snapped back with rude remarks and attitude. I do not appreciate rude workers yelling at customers because it creates a bad feeling. Michael's needs more workers and the employees need to be taught respect. read more

I love how Michaels is a bright and happy place even during the pandemic. There are people who care about art supplies and crafts. These people bring it to us day after day along with amazing app and great prices. Staff are nice and polite, lines aren't long. Since I had a bit more time on my hands lately, I went to Michaels to get some art supplies. I wad amazed how awesome it was in there. I came to realize how I'm missing the sense of normalcy, when you can go places without fear of getting a nasty virus. To start off with, we love the finished product and were given the holiday discount by the gentleman who rang us up. However our experience with the Aaron Brothers part of Michaels left much to be desired. There were about three people working the counter when we stopped in. The first person ignored us totally when we stood directly to her right, after 15 minutes the second finally looked up and greeted us after looking away from the computer where she was working on a project with another customer. The third finally asked us if he could help us after putting away all the stock he'd moving around. He ended up helping us with the frame we chose, while I went ahead and grabbed different treatments until we found one we liked. The associate was incredibly friendly and rang us up, letting us know they'd call us. They never called us. Or texted us. We almost totally forgot about the piece, until about a month later when we finally called them. Returning, low and behold we ran into the first person from our previous visit, who - you guessed it. Ignored us while she was putting away stock. The honey, who was now onto her game searched her out, directly asked her to help us, she then found our piece and had him sign. We've had other experiences with Aaron Brothers when they were their own space that were 4 or 5 star. This? We love the piece, but the experience was awful. We likely won't return. read more

For those looking for an alternative to Hobby Lobby (you know who you are), *be alert* while shopping at Michael's. When attempting to return a purchase made on-line for store pick-up, I learned the following: I needed a "scannable" receipt (this was apparently attached to the frames when I picked them up; receipt on my phone was not sufficient). There was also some problem with me using PayPal. I was only refunded the current sale price in the form of store credit, not what I actually paid for the frames, and the Return card cannot be used to make on-line purchases. (This is all explained in their Return Policy, but one would think an electronic receipt should be enough for a full cash refund.) I also did not appreciate the manager-type publicly berating my cashier for requesting assistance and not understanding the complexity of the return. read more

Same typical store in a different location that is not my home location and or store. The only down fall that I do not like about this place is that it is much smaller than all the other stores that I am used to seeing and have been to. Service is also quite slow with not enough employee's there to help and check out customers. Be expected to wait... this location will not have you in and out on your lunch break! If you need anything to do with framing - look elsewhere. We brought two paintings for framing in the beginning of January. We had to wait about 30 minutes because the lady working here did not have any help, there was another woman with brightly painted hair would pop in and act bossy, but she did not think to help us. The lady helping us was obviously new. They quoted us the price (not cheap at all), and we were on our way. It took two months and multiple phone calls to get our order done. First, they said that wrong parts were shipped. Then they would just say nothing, promise to call us when the order was done, and not call. In the end of February we called with intention of getting everything canceled, and surprise: the order is ready! We can to pick it up, the bright haired lady gave us the order, not one word of apology or acknowledgement, just acting as if she owns the place. read more

I needed to frame 11 original watercolors. The Michael's in Colma had no white matting in stock, so I headed to San Mateo Michael's. The custom framing person was gone for the day, but Tiffany who was the Manager on Duty stepped in and got the job done. She measured each image and frame and created a complicated custom order quickly and efficiently. She helped me select the right white mat for each image. This is for their store pick up set up. I ordered something online, got an email it was ready, okay so far so good. I get to the store and walk right past the shelf with all the pick up orders. They place it right by the entrance so if you doing know it's there you won'tbsee it and walk right past. I wait in line for a long time, while being ignored by the employees who are busy trying to shuffle everyone to the self checkout kiosks. Finally someone asks me what I want, and directs me to the shelf I already walked past. So then I go back, find a tag for my item cause it's too large to place on the shelf. Go back in line to be ignored again. Finally I just walk behind the counter and start rummaging through their oversized bin before an employee finally noticed me and explained it's in the cabinet next to that one. Way too much time for a simple order, and way too hard to get anyone's attention. If they wanted this pick up system to work they should've thought it through more. read more

Would give this place 0 stars! I don't even know how to put the horrendous customer service experience here into words. I am a teacher, who asked for the cashier to input the teacher discount on a large student order. The cashier had to call over her manager who was insanely rude and grumpy, and explained "we don't give discounts for no reason" even after I showed my ID card. When she input the discount, somehow the subtotal INCREASED, which I pointed out. Then she proceeded to blame me for misinforming her of the items in my cart, which I DID NOT, and this was verified by her employee. Meanwhile, none of the 3 employees assisting bagged my 30 items and refused to give me a bag for them. They made me ring up a reusable $1 bag which was processed in a separate transaction. This entire process took 25 minutes. The manager had the biggest scowl on her face and was so incredibly rude to myself AND to her employees. read more

This was my first time to the San Mateo location. The upside is that the store appears to be clean and well organized. I went in to get custom framing done as I have in the past at another location. The salespeople at the framing department have been very professional, helpful and have always offered helpful suggestions. The woman (Fina or Fida?) helping us wasted our time on a meaningless coupon ($5 off for Presidents' day reward) that wouldn't redeem because of their flawed rewards system. This typically wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for her uselessness. She was the only staff member at the checkout. After we spent 10 minutes trying to fix the issue with the online coupon without success, we just paid for what we needed ($1 poster board), without the coupon. A waste of money and time. read more

I haven't been to Michael's in quite some time today I go to buy some ribbon & some Easter supplies I get to the cash register. They have one person there, helpful as she can be to instruct how to use self serve check out. I start scanning things but items come up with different prices than what i seen in the aisle. The sales girl starts asking me what color was the sign that shoed the discount. Hell, i don't know what color it was. She starts to tell me I need to bring up coupons on my phone to get discounts. she was polite, as she can see my frustration. I then tell her I think that self-serve is really is depleting employee workforce, she then starts to school me on how it does not reduce staffing. I continued scanning but with the frustration of pointing the inaccurate pricing. I gave up... cancelled my purchase & left everything thing at the self serve. I have never had such a horrible experience as the one I just had at Michaels 15 minutes ago. I'm a teacher and frequent several Michaels stores every month. I have placed two other online pick up orders from this store and never had a problem. I placed an online order 28 hours ago that was supposed to be ready for pick up last night. I called the store 9 times today and no one would answer the phone and it would automatically disconnect after the fifth ring. So when I finally got through (on the 10th phone call) the manager said that one of the items wasn't in stock, so she cancelled my other item too. So I flew down to the store to pick up the originally cancelled item (that the manager ended up pulling from the shelf before I got there) and I freakin' find the other item the manager couldn't find! How do I know their store and items better than the manager does?! I've been in this city less than a year and have only shopped there 4 times. I knew I'd find it there because the online store said there were quite a few in stock, not "limited quantity." Not once did I get a phone call or email about this order cancellation! My phone number is on the email receipt as well as the order confirmation! She said that the old system asks for the phone number but they don't ever call customers. So I ended up having to repay for both items and hopefully will not be double charged. Both charges are still showing in my account, so I'll have to call customer service if it isn't credited back. This is pathetic and should never have come to this. I've never been more pissed in my life or stormed out of a store the way I did tonight. My mother & I were shopping for things for our project & the employees just followed us all around the store like we were stealing. I caught the employee a few times peaking around boxes & stuff. Very unprofessional. I believe they followed us around the store because we were black. Everybody else that came into the store after us they didn't pay them no attention to them at all. Typical Michael's crafting store! It's located across the street from Hillsdale but it's definitely something you have to drive to rather than walking in the winter. I come in here for whatever crafting needs I have. The parking lot is pretty spacious. Always goOd to use the coupons- don't worry you can always get the coupons online. Doesn't apply to everything in the store, but there's always a good sale going on. I noticed in the back there's an area to have parties or crafting events which I think is a really great touch! I've never seen that in any other Michael's before so I think it's cool that this one has it. It looks like a pretty good place to have an event! Overall this place isi n a good location, although it might be difficult/a bit of a hassle to get to from Hillsdale. It is walkable distance from the Caltrain station! read more

SHRINKY DINKS craft sheets!!!! OMG, something I grew up with! ....these sheets of plastic you can feed thru the inkjet printer or trace and freehand some art....stick in the microwave (used to be oven) and they shrink into cool artwork you can make into a keychain, pendant or charm....i'll probably make a cool dog tag for my pups! The San Mateo Michaels on Delaware had to relocate since the land was headed for residential. The new Michaels on El Camino is large and spacious. Parking is at the north side and rear. The store layout is pretty much typical Michaels with lots of art and craft supplies scattered throughout. The goal of the company, I'm sure, is to get you to cover every aisle before you leave, and should you decide to make a purchase, they have a long "Disneyesque" line for you to snake through and to gaze upon a variety of random items that you or a small child "just has to have." As our visit was just past "back to school," and just prior to the onslaught of Halloween and Christmas decor, there seemed to be limited crafting kits for children. A visit to Michaels really has a lot to do with the time of the year and the holiday coming or going. Bathrooms, by the way, are in the far back left corner and very clean. This is important to know when you have small children in tow. read more

The good: shopping carts are new, employees are nice. The bad: they don't have anything in stock and half of what is in stock, is locked. Therefore, you have to find an employee to even unlock it and they watch over you while you pick out what you want to hand it over to them. There was a long line at checkout at 3pm and only two employees at checkout. I won't be going back. read more
