The free BBQ was really a piece of hot dog (they ran out of buns by noon) but I love how the company is giving back to the community unlike other big box stores by doing these events every month or two. They invited local organizations to come and table and I learned about some local chapters I never knew about. Their product selection is decent and the price can be cheaper or more expensive than other big box stores, but the customer service here is 100% better than Lowe's or Home Depot. Its often empty, there are no staff in sight to ask questions, no button to push to call out. Spent about 15 minutes wandering and when I did find a staff member doing inventory, she was not particularly helpful or welcoming. No one answered her radio call so I simply gave up. The space is manageable, the selection appears thoughtfully organized, and the overall experience is far less overwhelming than walking through a massive warehouse. For a neighborhood hardware store, it offers an impressive sense of practicality and convenience. What truly distinguished my visit, however, was the customer service. A young associate helped me search for the specific screws I needed and showed genuine patience throughout the process. Rather than simply pointing me toward an aisle, he took the time to assist me directly and made every reasonable effort to locate the correct item. His willingness to help turned what could have been a frustrating search into a pleasant and productive visit. That combination of attentive service, a well-considered selection, and an easy-to-navigate environment makes this store especially valuable. Bigger does not always mean better, and this is an excellent example of a smaller business delivering a more personal and satisfying shopping experience. It has definitely earned its place as my go-to hardware store in San Mateo.

I walked to the key counter, and stood behind a man that had been waiting for someone to help him. I asked him how long he'd been waiting, and he said it had been ~5 min since he asked for help. I walked back to the center cashier, who said there was now no one on the floor to help as everyone was on lunch break. I asked for the manager, and he said he was on a break. There were now three people waiting to get keys copied, and no staff to help. After waiting a few more minutes, I walked back to the center of the store and spoke loud enough so that the manager could hear in the back. The message? That customers needed help at the key counter. Finally, a staff person came to the counter, clearly annoyed, and said they were having problems with their staff-to-staff communication device. Unlikely. What they were having a problem with, was a clear misunderstanding of what customer service means. Talk about a failure to train employees. Never coming back, nor recommending this business to my friends or family. There are better businesses nearby, ones that actually understand the importance of customer service ... and they're just a short drive away.

This hardware store has the a great opportunity to garner more business by being helpful to customers. When we wandered in, they were fairly busy setting stuff up, and I didn't see stickers of prices on the items. I can imagine (and for their sake) hope they manage to do a brisk business here. Though I would've rather a food place had popped up here, for what it's worth, they have a large, albeit limited repertoire of decor and furniture items, that range more on the aesthetic side, than purely functional, though this might change as they expand their inventory. My favorite first stop is always the clearance aisle. It's tucked away in the back, far corner and loaded with odds and ends, ridiculously reduced to entice even the most blasé shopper into buying something she really doesn't need. The last trip was intended to be a quick stop for a few pots to plant the Christmas poinsettias, but I walked out with a full shopping cart of cooking utensils, planters and even a new pair of sunglasses - all for around $100. The value makes shopping at Safeway look like it's the Ritz in comparison. There's lots of parking in the parking lot (pun intended) and automatic doors for those who need them. Dressing rooms are large and well lit. The people are super nice and always friendly, even the ones waiting in the long lines for checkout. I think it's because they placate every shopper with a vast array of temptations on either side of the check-out line. I've bought dish towels, scrunchies and wine toppers while waiting in line. *shaking head* So the next time you're in need of, well, pretty much anything, head to Marshalls. Don't forget to browse the clearance aisle.
