A great crafts, fabric, and art store! Beverly's was once a larger chain, but only one last Beverly's exists now, in Capitola. Apparently, it was also the first original Beverly's store. This Beverly's Crafts is well-stocked with plenty of fabric choices, lots of art supplies, and plenty of craft supplies and ideas. Friendly employees like Annie at the cutting counter provide helpful tips, information, and project advice. Great products at a great value! read more

This was my first time purchasing fabric at this store, and unfortunately, the experience was not a positive one. I brought the fabric to the counter and rang the bell, as the posted sign instructed. One of the staff members then turned around and told me, in a rather aggressive tone, that I didn't need to ring it since she was "right there." I tried to explain that this was my first time buying fabric here and that the process wasn't clear to me. After that, she explained how it works, but the interaction still felt unnecessarily uncomfortable. If there's a sign instructing customers to ring the bell, it's confusing to then be spoken to rudely for following it. I do my best to support local businesses, but I left feeling unwelcome and will likely shop at larger stores like Michael's in the future. I've always enjoyed going into this store. Something happened at my last visit makes me want to choose Michael's or JoAnns from now on. Front cashier is sweet, very welcoming. Older woman at fabric counter with long grey hair was incredibly rude, unhelpful and downright mean. I was already having a tough morning and thought going into Beverly's would help... made the mistake of searching for fabric here and assuming the customer service would at least be decent. Michael's here I come!!!! Oh my god. Tonight I went into look at their Halloween decor because it was 30% off. Big display as you walk in the door. Sign says 30% off. They had some Joe Spencer Halloween dolls. I had a large and 2 little ones in my cart. When I go to check out. I'm told they are not 30% off. I said the sign right above them it says differently . Then the manager came out he was very rude to me. I said the sign says ALL HALLOWEEN decorations. They wouldn't honor their advertised price. I think it's illegal. What do you think? read more

The staff is kind and knowledgeable. I went in for some basic sewing supplies and an associate was very helpful in showing me everything that I needed. I left with a good quality pair of detail scissors, some thread, and needles. I am satisfied with my purchase and glad the experience was not as overwhelming as it could've been without the help! read more

Currently only craft type of store in my town (but we have a Michael's opening soon!). They are ok. Staff is mostly friendly unless they are busy in which case, they tend to be short. My issue is selection of acrylic yarns. I realize this isn't a yarn shop and they do carry a decent variety just not one of the most common brands: caron.... I asked a staff member who was refilling the yarn area and he indicated they don't and he's not heard about that brand before.... really? Will be great when Michael's opens.... either that, or I guess I gotta start using luxury fibers for blankets and other similar projects. read more

DO NOT GO TO BEVERLYS UNLESS YOU WANTED TO BE TREATED LIKE CRAP!!!! Bonnie: Bonnie has a permanent bad attitude. I can't tell you how many times I've had a negative interaction with her. She's just mean. Today I saw I new stack of fabric and I asked if they had received black, Bonnie Said , " I TOLD YOU we aren't getting it until August!". Wow! That's no way to talk to a customer. She hurts my feelings every time I have an interaction with her. She acts like she hates being there and you are inconveniencing her to the fullest. Melissa: super rude. I was looking at thread and melissa was helping another customer and came over to where I was already standing. Since we are in a pandemic I asked if she would please maintain a 6 foot distance between her and I. She started yelling at me stating that she was helping a customer. I reminded her that I was also a customer and that either way I needed 6 feet. She refused. Another time I asked for 14 inches of fabric. I got home and I've end was 10 inches and the other was 12. Neither end was 14 and neither end matched the other. Epic fail! Two separate times she was cutting white fabric for me and as she was cutting it let the end fall in the ground and just left it there. I had to ask her to pick it up. Fabric should never touch the Floor, especially white fabric, and especially during a pandemic!!! I can't tell you how many times I've left in tears because they were so rude and mean to me. I despise going there. It's right around the corner from my house and I do sewing projects and often need last minute supplies. But it's just not worth it. I have fond memories of going here with my mom and grandma when I was little. But it's ruined. It's jut worth having my whole day ruined from horrible treatment. I will go to Hart's , buy online from amazon and drive over the hill to JoAnns. I will literally go without before I go back there. Plus, they no longer offer coupons. I Wouldn't care if they could be nice. Heck, if they could just not be cruel. I've spent over $1,000- there in the past 2 months but I will never return. I recently retired and moved out of the area. Oh, how I miss Beverly's. I may have to drive over and give them a visit! Quality fabrics and for the size of the store, a wide selection! Their other crafting items are the same- Quality, with many items to choose from. There are the "usual" craft stores (the 2 most are familiar with- Joann and Michael's) in my area- but the fabric quality and selection is lacking IMHO. Yes, I too have been "followed" throughout Beverly's. I found out that they have a valid reason to do so one day as I watched a shoplifter run out the front door with a huge tote bulging with shoplifted items. I have nothing to hide, so follow me! At least I'll have someone nearby that can get items off the top shelves for me! LOL I also agree that in the past, there has been the odd "rude" Cashier now and then (they are usually Students, from what I've seen). They don't seem to last long. Beverly's is such a great place to visit if you have many hobbies - sewing, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching, scrapbooking, etc. I visit Beverly's at least twice a month to pick up fabric, thread, and yarn. The prices are reasonable and I love the staff! They are so friendly! Another unique item they carry is Rexlace. I purchase a lot of it here because I teach elementary school and my students love making lanyard keychains, necklaces, and bracelets out of Rexlace. This is the only place (that I have found) in the area that carries it in a large roll. read more

I was fast to judge when a mishap happened with some neon embroidery that I was using for a year long project for my brothers memorial, and put up a one star review, it was too harsh and even if I was angry they did not deserve a one star. I love the store, and most the people serving us there are stellar. So Shirley called me to apologize and she went out of her way to locate the items on Amazon; as the company had gone out of business. Then when I came in, they had 12 six thread packages and no charge. At first I did not want to take it, it was not their fault the company went out of business, and they cost 10 bucks each. I was floored by the gesture and a personal beautiful card from Shirley in sympathy of my brothers suicide. I was touched and love this store even more. After looking over the other reviews, I see that a main complaint is the rude customer service so it makes me a bit sad to have to add to the list. I come in regularly for yarn and get frustrated when a main color is never available. When I inquire about when it might be in I always get the same answer "we're expecting a shipment later this week". (I guess it's easier to say that instead of actually finding out information) And when I come back in, the yarn shelves look exactly the same from earlier in the week....empty. Back to the employees...there are only a couple of employees who are actually friendly and helpful. The others are so unhappy and grumpy looking. They never smile and when asked a question they respond with minimal information and act like I am bothering them. This morning I was in there and the overweight, unkempt girl (forgot to get her name) who checked me out was so unfriendly. Just stoic and robotic. Not a lot of actual fabric here, IMO. Occasionally I will stop in to buy hooks or thread but that's about it. They have a ton of cottons for quilting and what not but they're sorely lacking in dress fabrics. If crafting is your thing though, you're in luck. That particular topic makes up about 80% of the store and a hundred over the top displays of every possible creation involving hot glue assault your senses upon entry. It took me a while to find this place because I needed fabric!!! Such a shame that santa cruz doesn't have more craft stores. In San Jose, we have those little stores that are overrun with fabric spools that are super dirt cheap. This place is like a Michaels. It has fabric, bouquet/flower material, jewelry making, decor, etc. It is huge and well organized, but there are no signs, so finding stuff can be a pain in the butt. Depending on the time of day, this place can get packed and it'll be impossible to track down an employee. so make sure you're not in any hurry when you shop here. Prices are steep, but that's almost a given at a craft store. I wish that the fabric was more cheap though. They also take PO's! so students putting on events can take advantage of all the neat crafty things available. read more

Seems like a very well taken care of place. Many trinkets and decorations along with cloths. However, I was hoping this place would be my replacement for Michael's because it's an hour away from Santa Cruz. It's not, too small. But definitely worth giving it a try if you're into another craft. I've been coming here for nearly 30 years and it feels like family. Their employees work SUPER hard and are knowledgeable and helpful. I feel bad that they have to deal with petty customers, having their cars damaged or broken into in the parking lot, and most recently a car crashed through the front entrance! I just love coming here for all of my crafting needs. The women who work here are very friendly and always helpful. They have a wide assortment of things. The way that the store is decorated always helps to get your creative juices flowing. They've got finished projects on display, with instructions on how to do them yourself. Also a great place to go to buy inexpensive home decor. My only problem with Beverly's is that I always leave with much more than I intended to buy! read more

It has the floral stuff I needed for my gum paste sugar flowers.... The customer service is decent enough. The aisles are not labeled so it can be overwhelming..and you are on your own unless you can flag down an employee. Craft store not a cake store..so keep in mind that if you are looking for cake decorations (beads, ribbons, floral tape etc) they have them.. melting chocolate etc.. those are in super duper limited supply up at the front of the store. read more

I'm an out of town visitor and wanted to look around and fabric to relax a bit. I wandered into Beverly's and was amazed to see the variety of Halloween decorations they had displayed at the entrance -- so many cute things to put all over the house from glass pumpkins to witches! I wandered around the store a bit. Everything was really well stocked with a huge variety. Of course my favorite area was the fabric. I like the way fabric was organized. Everything was very neat and I got the impression that the employees care very much about how their store looked. There were so many great fabrics that I wanted to buy several, but they are very heavy in a suitcase and ran about $9.99 per yard. At home, I can get a better deal where I bought my sewing machine, so I had to tell myself I had enough fabric (for now). If I lived in the area, I'd be a regular at this store for sure. I love crafting and they pretty much carry everything you need to be creative. There is plenty of parking and a Starbucks nearby where you can recuperate after your shopping extravaganza. read more

While I may be a crafty broad in other areas, when it comes to sitting down with a glue gun and some glitter to MacGyver myself something pretty, I tend not to do it very often (I don't know why, as I like doing that kind of stuff- must be the fact that I don't have the space). Anyway, when I was looking for fabric paint for my backup costume, my mom suggested this place. Specifically, I was looking for puffy paint. As I've mentioned to anyone who will stand still enough to listen, I'm a big fan of Halloween, so their Halloween stuff in the front of the store made me a little giddy. And then I went looking for the real reason of my visit, and the giddiness quickly vaporized. While someone who visited these places often might have an easier time finding things, I found I did not. The signs were kind of cryptic, there wasn't enough staff, and it just seemed like too much stuff for such a small space. After wandering the fabric area for awhile looking for...fabric paint, I finally found it in the regular paint things section. If you're into this kind of stuff on a regular basis, you may be fine (although I wasn't impressed with their fabric selection, and I don't sew anymore)...but if you're a novice, I would avoid it. Things I don't like: -Cheapy fabric, but not priced so cheap. -Really bad, sad, fat quarter selection. -Knitting stuff is meh. -Mostly cotton. -I don't like the way they are distributing the coupons throughout the month. I liked having them all and getting to choose when in the month I wanted to use it. And the deal breaker for me is....One specific woman, an older woman with glasses who wears her hair in a braid. I.CANNOT.STAND.THIS.WOMAN. What is her deal, being just polite enough to me, but treating her co-workers like crap (for her lack of communication) in front of me is rage inducing. Two days in a row I encountered rude sales people at the cutting table. Yesterday I asked about where the patterns were stored and the girl said, "we keep them behind the counter because we don't like "you people" going through the drawers. Today we were looking for a trim that we had purchased a yard of yesterday but it was no where I MEAN NO WHERE to be found on the floor. I glanced into the "go back" basket thinking it may be in there and the girl rudely said, it wouldn't be in there because they put their trims back at the end of each day. When I indicated I was looking in the basket because it was no where to be found she said another customer must be walking around with it. Yeah! Out of the 500 trims they carry the chance that it is somewhere around the cutting table far outweighs the chance of a customer wanting to buy the SAME trim as I do. There is one employee, mid 40's of Asian decent and she is professional and friendly consistently. We spends a couple grand a year in this store, but I'm done! I will only patronize Hart's and Judy's from now on! read more

I actually (normally) like Beverly's quite a lot and have been coming here easily 20 years. I have great memories of doing crafts with my mom when I was a little kid and picking out paper mâché figures to paint. Today I went in and bought 20$ worth of supplies for jewelry making, and then went to my car. I realized that I needed to cut something really quick and didn't have scissors so I went back in to the store and asked the cashier who I had just bought stuff from if I could use a pair of scissors. She said, "I'm sorry, we don't allow customers to use scissors". Really?!? You don't allow your customers to use a pair of scissors to make a super simple tiny cut to a piece of paper? In a craft supply store? A customer who just patronized your business and needs to do something that would literally take one second? That is straight up stupid. It's bureaucratic rules like this that pretty much destroy the feeling of personality and friendliness that I most appreciate in local stores. read more

I was SO impressed with the sales as well as the fabrics offered. I found VERY hard to find Eric Carle fabrics and more, great for both a "Sewista" and Kindergarten teacher. * UPDATE: 6/12/12 I called to see if they carried vinyl (rolls/sheets) for car decals, signs, etc. The girl I spoke to on the phone went on and on about table cloths...OK...So I ask again, "Do you have the kind of vinyl you cut using an electronic cutter to put on cars, like decals?" Her response: "Um, yes we do have that kind but you should just come in and look for yourself." Umm, that's why I CALLED BEFORE coming in so I didn't make the trip down there if they didn't have it! Wow! No wonder I shop online! That just took them from 3 stars, to 1. Get it together, Beverley's! Edited Again: Called back, got someone else equally as uneducated. Though she told me they DO NOT have the vinyl I've been looking for, unlike the girl I talked to 5 minutes earlier who said they did. (And then told me to come in for myself). Apparently, this other girl thought I had asked for WOOL instead of VINYL. She starts talking about "These are the only kinds of WOOL we have" and I said "I said VINYL." She then TELLS ME what I said, and says "You said wool." Um. Seriously. These people don't know fabric from vinyl, or vinyl from wool. I am done with Beverley's. ***** The selection is ok, kind of scattered everywhere. My only complaint is the incredibly rude, inexperienced staff. It's hard to find ANYONE to help you, and when you do, they are rude! The actual Manager at this place has insulted me, and made ME feel stupid when SHE didn't know what "Damask print" was. She had to ask 3 other "workers" there and even they didn't know what it was. I'd assume if you worked at a FABRIC STORE, you'd know the names of the prints. That isn't my biggest complaint, it was the fact that the woman had to be a witch because she had no idea WTF she was talking about. They act like it PAINS them to have to help you when you finally track them down to ask where to find something, or if they have something. This place has everything? FALSE! I usually come here for my crafts since it's one of the only crafts stores near santa cruz. Last night I went to look for TEAL RIBBON and searched the ribbon section up and down but they had every other shade of blues and greens except for teal. The only ribbon they had in teal were the super thick ones and the ones they sell in a pack for $6.49 and I needed at least 6 yards of it. I wasn't going to pay $14 for stupid ribbons. All their stuff are overpriced, especially felt. I can get the same felt at Joann's or Wal-mart for half the price! Beverlys is just taking advantage of how they are the only crafts store in the Santa Cruz area. If I had a choice, I would never go back there! One star for service though. I recognize that this makes me officially, "part of the problem," but I'm not rolling in money, and the internet is usually a more cost-effective route for me. That said, I do have those moments where I'm in the middle of a project that I didn't think through (that would be ALL my projects EVER), and I'll discover that I need something OMG RIGHT NOW. What do I do? I jump into my car and go to Beverly's. I ran out of quilt pins! Beverly's. I need more interfacing! Beverly's. My cat ate all my wool! Well, I'd go to the vet FIRST, and THEN go to Beverly's. But you get it. They don't have everything, but they're there when you need them. read more

I always come here for my basic fabric and craft shopping needs. There is always someone there to help me, even during the busiest time of the day. There is a great assortment of fabrics, some for really great prices. Every once in a while you can find some awesome fabric in the 1/2 off or 3.97 a year section. Every employee is super helpful as well. If I ask someone where something is, they will automatically tell me what aisle or even take me exactly to it. Keep it up, Beverlys! read more

Too much cheesy home decor and junk, not enough actual craft supplies. I needed some cones of serger thread and all they had was some off-brand stuff of limited color selection in an awkwardly placed bin. Part of my complaint may be just because of where craft trends have been heading the last few decades where we're getting away from actual skills-based crafting and more into "put a bird on it" territory. But I just can't understand why such a large footprint of the store has been taken up with garbage that's already been made. Thank goodness for Hearts, but it's expensive and not appropriate for my non-sewing crafting needs. If you're reading this review and need a good fabric alternative, go to there. They are always willing to climb the ladder and reach the things up on a shelf or crawl under a table to retrieve something I've dropped. And they know where everything is and how to use it. I really liked Beverly's in the past years, but recently I've noticed that their buyer is making sensational choices on contemporary cotton fabrics. There is a huge new selection of terrific fabrics here. I've bought a lot lately and am delighted because it means i don't have to drive out of town to get cool chick fabric.
