I don't believe that you can pick the instructor that you have, but I would suggest if you had the opportunity to have her as your instructor, I would highly recommend her. She was so nice and kind. It was easy to follow her simple instructions, even though I had never made pottery before. She made me feel very welcomed and she was extremely encouraging as well throughout the whole process. I had such an enjoyable time and of course the pottery making itself was just a blast, but she really added to the experience, to be honest with you. They give you an apron and all the tools and clay and water that you need to create your pottery with, so you don't have to really bring anything except yourself and a great attitude. It was easy to go back and pick up the pottery, although my girlfriend did this for us. She's a sweetheart. My girlfriend and I have not stopped talking about this experience, nor our instructor My and how we're looking forward to going again in the future. If you're looking for a date idea, guys, this is a 10 out of 10 experience!!! You get to keep one of your creations, and then I think each additional one is $10 after that? You then get to choose from, I think it was eight different glazes? I think it took about 2-3 weeks to get the pottery back, but I wasn't really keeping track of that. While I was having lunch nearby at Lazy Dog with my family, a representative from this shop decided to use the entire parking lot as their personal dumping ground, going row by row shoving unsolicited advertising flyers under the windshield wipers of every single vehicle including mine. Let's be entirely clear: nobody wants your marketing garbage forced onto their car. It is incredibly invasive and disrespectful to touch someone else's vehicle without permission. Beyond that, it creates an immediate, ugly litter problem for the neighborhood when these papers inevitably blow away or get tossed onto the pavement by annoyed drivers. If a company has to resort to desperate, intrusive, guerrilla-style littering tactics just to get eyeballs on their brand, it speaks volumes about the sub-par quality of their operation. I will absolutely never support Tuft A Rug, and I strongly urge everyone else to take their business to other local shops that actually respect private property and the community.

Tuft-A-Rug is located in Fox Valley Mall, which is perfect as most other rug making locations are in the city. Walking by, you can immediately see people already at work (a genius way to grab people's attention!). You start by choosing what size rug you would like to make, as price and time requirements differ with both. I recommend booking in advance. If you come as a group, the fee also becomes discounted. I chose the 21x18 size and went with a friend which came to about $60 per person. It starts out with a demonstration so you get to practice a bit! I was super nervous but once you get the hang of it, it's so much fun. You can make any design you want. You'll trace out the image by either free handing it, or you can use your phone to project a picture and trace it that way. A tip is that if you know what you want to do and have an image, you can actually email it to them and they can trace it ahead of time so it's ready- which is super convenient. There's a plethora of color yarn you can choose from. I know I keep saying it, but seriously, this activity was so much fun. Once it comes together it really gives you so much satisfaction. It did take quite a bit of time, and the bigger and more complex your design, the longer it will take. I, of course, like to make my life complicated for some reason so it took a bit of time, maybe about 3 hours. But it came out SO cute! I made a hedgehog laying in a bed of daisies!! Please do note, that you will not go home with your rug the day of. They do have to finish it which may take about a month (it can be shipped if need be). There are some options of finishing touches that you can select. And if you do have some small patchiness that might need a touch up, they're happy to help! Service was awesome, the owner Keaton was the bomb. So patient, funny, and super helpful! Even with a bigger group he managed to help everyone when they needed it. The location is ideal, there's definitely enough space and seating, cool walls to take photos with your rugs. The playlist was bomb. The price is completely fair and actually very affordable for the service, time, and product. I really have nothing but more raving to do about this place and wish it all the best. I've already recruited a friend group to come back and do it with me! Keaton is passionate about his work and it is very clear in the way it is set up! We came on a very busy day, so I would suggest calling ahead to see if there are multiple open tables. It isn't necessarily a relaxing environment for painting. We were able to paint and have a fun time together. That being said, I think the lack of space in the studio, the paint rules, and lack of staffing led to a "just okay" experience. Hitting up these shops has always been a must when I've traveled in Japan. Some of the ones there are several stories tall so I expected something similar to the Daiso's I've visited in California with a really trimmed down selection. I find that at least for this one in Oswego that the number of products available was a lot more than I thought it'd be especially with the added plus of their more expensive but still bargain-priced Standard product line. This was happily surprising even though it totally wrecked my plans of just popping in to grab a couple of little things to add to my neices' Easter baskets. The trip ended up turning into a familiar situation of finding myself slowly idling through every aisle to be sure I noted everything that was available. Suddenly many of the little things I had to leave behind in Tokyo were once again at my fingertips and I didn't have to worry about overfilling a suitcase. Two brimming bags and $40 later I made it out of what I'm sure was just the first of many random trips to these new Chicagoland Daisos.

Today I had a wonderful time taking the cookies 101 course at the Wilton school. It was a one-day…read moreclass that lasted from 9 AM until 4 PM. Our instructor was very helpful and took us through various stages of decorating eight different cookies. The Davie again with having the teams work together to prepare royal icing in different shades and consistencies. Once when you got that in play then we started with decorating our cookies at various levels. For this class we did not have to bake the cookies. They came prepared and ready and all that we had to do was learn the proper techniques for applying royal icing and we're given our supplies needed and could even keep the supplies that we used to take home after the class. I will definitely be taking more classes at the Wilton school. All of my questions that I had were thoroughly ask. I was not a beginner royal icing student. But I did ask questions that were a little bit more complex and regardless of the kind of person that I had I was met with a smile and an appropriate answer. If you have any doubt about whether or not you should take a class at the Wilton school, do not hesitate. They are great!
