Love the options and prices! I certainly feel like the ceramics we painted were quality. I just wasn't a fan of the "5 colors per person" rule. I totally understand the business wanting to limit resources and keep costs low, but it felt very restricting. Especially when they expected an answer on, "What color will you use the most?". The older lady that was working was instantly rude when me and my friend went to finish painting our pottery. She was quick to give attitude and seemed annoyed we were there . She even left the building for a minute which isn't the most professional. The website and google claim to be open till 6 . As it's almost 5pm , new customers walk in a group over 5 and are looking to paint . The worker turns them down and says we are closing at 5pm today . Not once did she mention that to us or let us know they were closing early . the lady says she's closing due to slow business day . At that time there was me my friend and another lady with her kids still painting , so as you could see we were confused and felt shoved out and not enough time to finish our paintings . She also tried telling us that from now on if you spend more than two hours painting that you will get recharged the eight dollar service fee. Which is crazy . come to find out this is the manager of the location will not be coming back nor recommending this business to anyone. read more

Fun and welcoming place to paint pottery! It is also byob which was convenient especially if you want to catch up with friends, have some drinks and paint some pottery. It can get busy and sometimes I felt like we waited to be helped with certain things because there was only one person working at the time. There are no reservations. You do have to ask for more paint as you run out, which is not a bad thing, but if it's busy you may be waiting a bit. This was our fault, but keep in mind that it's best to bring canned/pre-poured drinks. We brought twist off wine and felt bad because we had to borrow plastic cups! Thankfully they had them, but this is not something that they routinely provide. If we go again, we would bring canned, single serve items. read more

We had not been here since our children were little- over 20 years ago! One Sunday afternoon soon after Christmas my husband suggested a date here. Apparently everyone else in Naperville had the same idea and it was pretty crowded! Bad experience, grumpy worker, bad attitudes. I don't usually write reviews because it's never worth it, but this place was very frustrating. I decided to take the kids I babysit to pottery bayou because I used to love it as a kid as well. I brought my girlfriend with me too as it was going to be a fun painting activity. To start I walk in there with the kids and the only worker inside immediately has a bad attitude by not welcoming us and just asking us what we want basically. I then had to ask her how the whole process worked. She signed us up and started the 2 hour clock they put on customers. This was before we even picked out pieces or paint!!! $8 per painter (only 5 colors each) and you have to pay for the piece separately. Only a few large and worn out brushes on the table and we were given one piece of paper towel to wipe brushes. Next, I put my stuff and the kids stuff down on a table in the corner. While I was looking for my piece, I was told that we were not allowed to sit there because we had 4 people and that was a 5 person table. So the worker moved us DIRECTLY next to the only other people in the building, a couple who was visibly uncomfortable with us being so close and hearing conversation when the entire building was empty and we could've sat anywhere else to give them space. We are paying for the activity we should be able to choose where we sit in an empty building. After we all picked our pieces and paint we waited for the worker to grab our paint, which was delayed because the worker was asking the kids what color they chose (numbers they make you write on the plates). The kids couldn't remember what colors corresponded to the numbers and they shouldn't have to!! The worker should have known the palette. My kids were visibly upset because the worker was being annoying about her handwriting!! When my girlfriend and I could clearly read it. Now we are 40 mins in and have not even received paints. That's when my girlfriend and I decided we weren't going to paint anymore because of how annoyed we were. So I put my piece back on the shelf but because my girlfriend wrote her name on the bottom of the piece she chose (as seen in the picture below) we were told we HAD to pay because it was "permanent pencil". I was not going to argue more with this worker so I just payed the $23 for the unpainted piece..... you can literally see there is NO WRITING on the bottom. She just wanted to take our money. Also notice how they accidentally got a smear of yellow paint on the piece too! Annoyed. So many better pottery places around. Don't go here. You won't have an enjoyable time. read more

Pottery Bayou made my whole experience absolutely beautiful !!! This was my first time doing this in decades , !! I had been walking around with my 12 yr grandson Elijah & decided to "pop in" & that was a couple months ago , Elijah painted several pieces & got them back within 1-2 weeks , I finally finished my "sushi plate " I drew on , then meticulously painted ( not without the help of the amazing staff , who went above & beyond to help me ( as my plate has sentimental & personal meanings ...) My daughter is turning 7 this year and we asked her what she would like to do on her 7th birthday. She said she wanted to try something different, not Chuck E Cheese or any of those trampoline place. I asked her if she wanted to try painting and showed her the website of Pottery Bayou. We always passed by this place whenever we are at Downtown Naperville. When she saw the potteries and designs, she agreed to go and try it. I am also not sure if they take reservations ahead of time so when we came in I immediately asked if they accept walk-ins. The lady said there was no problem even though there was a birthday party when we got there. She walks us through things that we need to remember: 1. The session is for 2 hours 2. The fee was $8 per painter 3. The price of the Pottery varies depending on the style and size and is not included in the $8 fee 4. The other side of the wall has all the colors & brushes that we can use. 5. After the painting, they will "bake" our pottery and we can pick it up after 7-10 days. Our painting session was so much fun (I painted a soup cup and my daughter chose a kitten) although at times my daughter would struggle because she wanted to see the outcome immediately. You do have to paint a couple of layers to your pottery, it takes awhile. Overall, we like the place. For me it was relaxing and I will do it again. My daughter on the other hand was not too patient to sit. Even though I like the place, we ended up choosing another venue for her birthday party. read more

Never write reviews but it caused my daughter to cry... Terrible customer service. My sister and daughter went to pick up items yesterday. Girl brings over a bag, says you might want to check if everything is in there and walks away. Everything is poorly wrapped, some in a box, some in bubble wrap. They lift up the bubble wrap and an item falls out and breaks. It was what my daughter made for me and she starts crying. Girl working there sees all this, never comes over, never acknowledges anything. They had to gather the pieces themselves and my dad attempted to glue it back together for her at home read more

I really enjoyed painting here. I look forward to receiving my piece and glad I had the opportunity to be creative. The owner and the other staff member were nice and made sure I had what I needed to complete my project. Areas of improvement: 1. Engage a bit more when customers walk in. Mention the pricing package. I didn't realize there was an $8 fee for two hours of studio use. This is fine, as supplies cost money, but it would have been good to know there is a cost/time limit per every two hours to be mindful of. Had I crossed into a third hour, I would have been charged another $8. 2. Play additional music. The same 2-3 songs were played for the duration of the stay. 3. Improve the organizational system for stencils. A binder with printouts of the stencils could work, so the staff can keep it organized instead of customers, and customers could let staff know which ones they're interested in using. Or a binder with clear sleeves to hold the stencils, organized by sections (plants/floral, objects, shapes, etc.), so customers can easily place them back and not have to dig through the designs. read more

Instead of my kitchen island getting covered in drying water color art pieces, we can come here, paint something to their heart's content and be left with a piece that could potentially last forever, instead of me sneaking their "art" to the recycle bin the first chance I get. Eight dollar fee per person for paint and kiln; even if you were to paint multiple items, it's still only $8. Mugs of different sizes, plates, animals, ornaments etc.... there's something for everyone. Prices vary, but they are priced and grouped so you can allow your kids free range or you can say "Anything from *this* shelf." But prepare them for the fact that they don't leave with their painted project. You pick it up about a week later after it's been through the kiln. Quiet. Cheerful. And a place to go when it's rainy and cold. This is the place. read more

I thought the experience was there, but the website is definitely misleading when it comes to cost. $8 fee to paint per person for 2 hours (we were also 30 minutes late because we came from very far away and nothing was offered for a discount, and I didn't ask for one either, a proration would have gone a long way as good customer service) and an additional gratuity of $40 was automatically added. My girlfriend was there with 3 kids and an automatic $40 gratuity to her bill as well. So out table alone paid $80 in forced gratuity. It wouldn't have been that bad if the service was quicker and I didn't have to get my own paper towels and had to wait for extra paint. I found them very short staffed. Just for reference my girls each did a coffee mug, and I did a small planter maybe 5 inches tall and with all the absurd fees our total was $170...I call this not one $ (dollar sign) as it states. Very far from. Would be so sad if someone went in thinking that the cost was affordable and had to leave or couldn't afford to pay the fees that weren't mentioned till she wrote up their bill. I loved loved loved my first experience at Pottery Bayou because the atmosphere is beautiful, relaxing and provides a large and amazing variety of pottery pieces to choose from. Although I love to pick challenging pieces to paint, Joumana (the owner) and the staff were willing to teach me new techniques and provide me with plenty of supplies. What a great way to meditate and spend some me time! I will definitely go back again to take my mind off of stress. I also look forward to bring my children with me when they visit since this place is located in downtown Naperville that has lots of things to see and explore a long Riverwalk for fresh air. read more

The older child attended a birthday party at Pottery Bayou this past weekend. The deal is, each kid chooses a bisque that they paint at the party. A week or so later, you go back to pick it up and it's all bright and shiny. The staff are cool. The whole scene was pretty mellow since it's an art party, lacking the noise and mayhem of the gymnastics places. We didn't spot it at first because it's the second unit of a split building. It's on the south side of the Riverwalk that flows through downtown Naperville, and there's a gazebo in back where the kids can watch the Naperville ducks float along, chatting about how they bought their Humvees "before the whole oil thing," and how it's so nice to have Catch 35 and Hugo's Frog Bar right here, eliminating the need to go to the city. A 6x6" 1/4 " thick blank tile was $8.00. Mugs were expensive. Proprietor was not friendly and only spoke when asked a question. Offered no unsolicited assistance, direction or suggestions. Establishment was not busy. 4 when we got there. They left and 3 more came about 1/2 later and 8 when we all left. Came here with my young niece, the worker Debbie was very nice and welcoming to us, always appreciated when you have a kid with you. she put on a radio station that was suitable for kids without us asking, a really great attention to detail on her part and we were grateful. She also was very thorough in explaining everything. Compared to some pottery places we've been to it seemed somewhat more expensive (not enough to bother us) and selection was somewhat smaller too. Very disappointing experience tonight. The hours on the website earlier today said they were open until 8:00 p.m. until the end of September for their Fall hours. When I arrived with a friend at 6:00 p.m., it was closed even though it looked like those inside were far from being finished. Fall? It's August! We were not happy considering we thought it was a night out for us moms. Tonight I see the website lists the hours closing at 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Funny how the closing time changed from this morning with no mention of "Fall Hours" Too may other highly recommended places to go for Pottery. We will NOT be going back there!!!! read more
