I've been going to Da at Michael Anthony Salon for over a year. When I moved to DC, I extensively researched hair salons and read many, many great reviews for Michael Anthony Salon. I can honestly say that I've never been happier with my hair than I am now. Da is very creative and knows what works with my hair type. She takes time to educate me on the techniques she uses and how to style my hair. Lately, I've been getting my hair colored and highlighted, and it looks amazing. I constantly get compliments on my hair, especially how great it looks in pictures. My husband (being a military kid) always sported a short hair cut from the mass-chain hair places. I suggested he try the salon and move away from the "cookie cutter" men's haircut. We talked to Da and decided he would look great with longer hair. He's been so happy with his hair and loves the new, trendy style. Da did a great job determining what would look best on him and she's done a fabulous job of maintaining the style. In short, the salon is awesome. They do amazing work and we've had only great experiences. So I've traditionally not gone to salons to get my haircut - I always thought they were too pricey and not worth it; however, I recently decided it was time to grow up and invest a little in my hair. I tried the Aveda Institute first because I'm cheap and the student haircuts are a great deal -- I got the wrong student though...and was not happy at all. Then I tried the Ava Salon and Spa, which was good, but not the best. Michael Anthony is the best. I should've just listened to all the other Yelp reviews. I'm 26 and my hair has never looked better. To start, I was offered coffee/tea/water/soda as soon as I walked in. Then I met Jonathan, who was great - I told him I'm getting married in 3 months and wanted to wear my hair up at the wedding but that it was getting too hard to manage at its current length. Although I said I wanted to take off a few inches, he cautioned me that I should only take off 2 inches and instead put in layers to make it lighter and more manageable. I was happy to have his suggestions and agreed that sounded like the best plan. After a wonderful shampoo with a great head massage (seriously, is it ok to fall asleep when your hair is getting shampooed...is that weird?), Jonathan started my hair cut. He was actually pretty quick cutting, but you could tell he was measuring everything out so that it was all even, which I greatly appreciated having some really uneven cuts in the past. After he cut it and showed me the layers in the back, he then set about drying it all, which is quite a process! Jonathan curls your hair with the brush and then wrapping it around the brush and leaving it for a bit, so you end up with many brushes in your hair looking quite ridiculous...but it's so worth it. My hair is incredibly thick so it took him a while to finish drying it, but he didn't skimp at all - he dried it all and then brushed through it with some smoothing pomade. It looked incredible...I really don't think my hair has ever looked like this. I was also pleasantly surprised my haircut was $59 - I thought it might be more given the length of my hair, but it was just $59. It's so worth it. This is now my new salon, and I will request Jonathan next time I need a haircut too! I highly recommend him and the whole salon. The checkout process was also very easy - you can have your receipt emailed to you! I forgot to mention you can also make your appointment online, which I loved. I got a hair cut last year at Michael Anthony Salon and I felt that it was between "Meh. I've experienced better" and "A-OK" (the rating descriptions from Yelp) - so probably between 2.5 and 3 stars. I needed a cut /really/ bad and my usual stylist at another salon was booked for over a month. I really love my current stylist and knew that it would be a tall order to experience a 5-star, but I was hoping for a 3 or a 4 and a second salon to go to in a pinch. I say this so that you know of my bias. Not wanting to go on vacation without a cut I checked on Yelp and was wowed by all of the 5 stars at Michael Anthony and booked an appointment. I really liked it that I could effortlessly book online. When I was there it was very hectic and behind schedule (everyone was very apologetic for having me wait). I was concerned with having my meter run out and I was glad that I put a bit more money on it as I read from Yelp that they seem to be behind schedule frequently. I told him that I wanted something different and easy to maintain, I don't always have access to a hair dryer. The haircut was fine and I thought it looked good leaving the salon. However it was not easy to maintain and there was a visible 'ridge' (I have very fine straight hair) where he apparently cut beneath the surface to create volume. My husband also noticed a bunch of spit ends that needed to be retouched. I also didn't appreciate it that the salon was so hectic that Mickey had to step away a few times to deal with business. In the end I paid a dollar less than what my current stylist charges and I prefer having a high-touch non-rush feel from start-to-end and not have to change chairs to get my hair blown-out etc etc. I do wish Mickey and his salon well, it's just not for me. read more

Found this place on Yelp a little over a year ago and absolutely obsesssssssed!!! Hunter is INCREDIBLE! Every time I get my hair cut I have complete strangers stop me in grocery stores, the post office, bank, etc. and tell me how great my hair looks, which makes me the happiest girl ever! I have been struggling to find a competitively priced salon that wouldn't make me look like a suburban mommy. Enter Hunter and Michael Anthony Salon. Hunter took the time to sit with me and discuss where I want to go with my hair (hoping to grow it out to an angled bob from a pixie) and color. I wanted a pop of pink and he gave me a couple of different options. My highlights and pink look awesome and he gave me a great transitional cut! He also worked hard to stay on schedule with me while fitting in another client while I was processing and I appreciate that so much! I think I have found my salon! Only tiny con: parking is a bear. Give yourself lots of time before the appointment to find a space/garage (and all the garages in the area are cash only in advance). read more

Mickey has been cutting my hair for 5+ years. I get tons of compliments on the cut, but I think the best compliment for Mickey is when I get I get a compliment the day before I am scheduled to get my hair cut! That is definitely a sign of a great haircut in my mind. He really does a great job. His staff is super friendly as well. Short hair can be a gamble -- it can come out awesome or awful, and there's nowhere to hide because you can't pull it back. Fortunately, whenever I go to Michael Anthony Salon my hair always looks awesome! The prices are a little steeper than what I'm used to (just like everything else in DC), but it is absolutely worth every penny to know that I will be happy with the results. I usually get my hair cut by Kendra and she does a fantastic job. Like, people stop me on the street to say "great hair!" fantastic. I would highly recommend her to anyone interested in a pixie style or short hair. (I'd recommend her for any cut, frankly, but this one I can vouch for first-hand.) read more

Before selecting this salon, I scoured through tons of reviews looking for a one that I would be able to trust with my precious locks. Based on nothing but the reviews, I decided on the Michael Anthony Salon and can say that I do not regret my decision. I called on a Thursday looking to score an appointment for the weekend and wasn't surprised when the stylist I wanted, Da, was booked. I put my name on the waitlist, assuming that I would never hear back, but to my surprise they called me the next day to schedule a Saturday afternoon appointment...WIN! What I most appreciated about my appointment (in addition to the fabulous cut) was the fact that Da spent a decent amount of time talking to me about what I wanted in my hair cut. My bangs needed some serious attention and she offered her opinion based on my fine, thick hair. I told her I was a little apprehensive about adding the layers in the back that she recommended and we finally agreed that she would address my bangs this session and when my hair grew a little longer, we would address the layer situation. I truly appreciated the fact that she took the time to get to know me and my needs rather than chop my hair knowing that I wasn't confident in what she had suggested. My hair looks so good and I have been getting compliments on it since I left the salon. The best part for me is the fact that I can style them just as easily as before; but, they look 100 times better than the sad bang look that I had going on previously. This was my first visit to the salon and my first cut in a while! Da was amazing! She listened to my rambling explanation of what I was looking for and then used her expertise to make my hair look chic and healthy. Consuela's shampooing and head massage rounded out the experience! Plus, they go above and beyond with COVID precautions. I felt very safe the whole time. Da wasn't quite ready for me when I arrived, so they gave me a voucher for the coffee place next store since they don't have a waiting room currently. I will definitely be back! read more

Mickey has been cutting my hair for about a year now and I adore him. I have straight, fine hair that tends to look limp but Mickey manages to cut it in a way that it keeps its style and body. As another commenter said, you don't necessarily notice what a great cut he gives right away. You definitely walk out of the salon looking like a million bucks, but the difference with Mickey is that you still look that way a month later. The customer service is fantastic as well. The staff is always friendly and professional, whether its while you're scheduling your appointment or welcoming you to the salon with a drink or a magazine. Once, when I wanted to try something different with my bangs, Mickey executed it perfectly. But after a few days, when I realized my experiment was misguided, I called for a fix. They worked me in the next day and Mickey fixed me right up -- no charge. The space very conveniently located and the look is clean and modern. I also like that Mickey goes above and beyond by being active and involved in the community. read more

The salon itself has a very cozy and warm feeling (yes, that means it is physically small but not cramped), and everyone that I spoke to or made an accidental eye contact with seemed to respond with friendliness. I got a great cut from Jonathan. He was super friendly and did a great job not cutting too much off. The texture and layers give my hair versatility but the cut is a short to mid length which is good for work. The price is a little high for a cut that didn't take that long but the costumer service was fantastic. I think I was just surprised how fast it was. DISCLAIMER -- I haven't yet had a cut there -- only updo/event styling so far. Hunter has done my hair twice for special events. He is creative and totally fine taking charge and figuring out what to do. For one of the events, he suggested setting my hair up in pins so that I could later take the pins down, run my fingers through my hair, and get a second look out of it -- worked like a charm -- the style lasted for days -- and my hair is not particularly easy to work with. The only reason that I didn't rate 5 stars is due to price. I really wish it was just a little less for a men's haircut (I'm a cheapskate)...but I'm going back...so...take that as you will. After a bad experience with the person who had been cutting my hair previously...I decided to give this salon a try as it is right around the corner from work. I had seen rave reviews for both Hunter and Jonathan so I requested an appointment with either of them. It seems that Hunter is only in the salon one weekend a month and is booked months in advance...so they booked my appointment with Jonathan. I'm going to try and keep this short because otherwise, I will go on and on for days about how much I LOVE this salon. My hair is about 2 years perm/chemical free and it's been quite a process figuring out how to manage my 4c natural hair texture (read: super friggin thick and coily). I was afraid of getting it blown out for fear that heat damage would upset my natural texture, but Collin alleviated ALL of those fears on my first visit with him. I'm not exaggerating...I sent all my friends an obnoxious slow motion video of my hair bouncing...I can't even remember it looking that good when I had a perm!) Needless to say, I don't go anywhere else to get my hair done now. In addition to my blowouts and trims, Collin also did a fantastic color job that I'm STILL getting compliments on months later. Aside from Collin, everyone else in the shop (from Mickey the owner, to the other stylists, to the shampoo techs and the front desk associates!) is super friendly and nice. Kendra just have me the most beautiful, subtle and natural-looking balayage color! I didn't bring any pictures because I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for-- auburn, sun-kissed rather than the bolder ombré look that is in now. She managed to read my mind anyway, and I couldn't be happier! She's clearly very thoughtful about her craft, and lovely to talk to as well. I will preface this by saying my boyfriend told me that my hair cut was not professional. Have been going to my salon for 20 some years. I have to admit that I was in a rut needed something and was looking for a stylish new cut to accompany my 70 pound weight loss. So, after a lot hope researching and hand wringing, I found myself at Michael Anthony salon. I chose Da as my stylist. I'm so glad I did. Walking up the steps of this Capitol Hill salon, I was extremely anxious yet excited. The place was buzzing with business, laughter and good style. I checked in with the receptionist who asked me if I'd like a beverage. I took some water and waited for about 10 minutes for my appointment. I told Da that I was looking for a fresh sassy look and to really have her way with me! She did a great razor cut, explained what she was doing and how I could replicate the same look at home. We discussed color and the possibility of mine growing out to see what my gray really did look like. I was shocked at the shortness of my hair but really liked it. I've waited a week and a half to write this review to make certain that I captured my satisfaction. I really like my new haircut and have gotten tons of compliments. I'll be back. I have been going to Hunter for a few years now. After my previous stylist moved I asked around the hood and several friends recommended him as the guy I had to see. I have been very happy! Not only is he charming, friendly, warm, creative and fun to be with, he does the the most wonderful job with my hair. My hair is thick, curly, frizzy, crazy and has a stubborn wild mind of its own. Hunter just loves to play with it. He always gives me a cut that is bouncy, fun, and has just enough edge to be noticed. No matter how I feel like when I arrive, I feel beautiful when I leave. Since his cut/blow dry lasts for days, I keep that feeling going. I never get it quite the way he does, but I know he is doing something right cause I get compliments on my hair all of the time. I brought my mom when she was visiting and Hunter worked his magic on her. I will insist she visits him when she returns so that I can take pictures this time. It is not around the block for me, but Hunter and everyone else at the salon always make it worth my while. While I am in in that great part of SE, I love visiting the cool places around the shop and can always use something at Eastern Market. Just leave a few extra minutes for the people who like to have entire conversations before getting to the other side of the street and for the meters. It is all good. read more

Gerald is by far the best stylist I have had in the 10+ years I've lived in the DMV. I can't say enough about how amazing my experience was. Gerald was everything you would want in a stylist, especially when you're coming in for a haircut after this pandemic. He listened carefully and asked great questions when I tried to explain what I wanted (Also important to note that I was a little all over the place with what I wanted and didn't give him much clear direction, so he didn't even have much to work with. And despite that, he somehow understood exactly what I wanted.) He gave me an absolutely gorgeous color treatment and cut. He somehow managed to add depth and volume to my forever flat/lifeless hair--something no one has ever been able to do. I was so shocked by the results that I couldn't believe I was looking at my own hair! Also, all of the other staff was incredibly friendly and kind and went above and beyond to make sure they were meeting safety protocol while making folks feel comfortable. Horrible service. I paid $80 for a blow out that the stylist didn't even know how to do it. My appointment was at 3 pm, and I got there at 255 pm and he didn't even serve me until 340 pm. Then he was getting mad at me when I said I have to leave by 4 pm - a blow out should only take an hour! But since I was ignored and he was serving other customers haircuts, was not sure what to do. Never again will go to this salon after the way i was mistreated and disrespected. The blow out also was horribly done and not even worth the money. I wouldn't even call it a blow out. Such a waste of time and money. So disappointing.... after I read all the positive reviews and pay that much for a blow out, would at least expect a somewhat positive experience. read more

I had a wonderful experience at this salon. Da gave a great cut, and the women who shampooed was wonderful! During the shampoo she gave a fabulous head and neck massage, which I wasn't expecting so it was an extra treat! I would come back just for the massage. Da really listened to me when I explained how my previous hair cut (from a different salon) did not turn out well and needed a few things fixed, but wanted to keep the overall style. I also really liked that I could request an appointment online. They ended up not being able to take me on the first date I requested, but had an appointment the day after. They texted and emailed me a reminder for my appointment, although I probably didn't need both. Some people might though! Mickey has been doing my hair for about a year now and this review is way over do. To say I am picking about my hair color would be an under estimate. Red is a difficult blend to achieve and Mickey has always worked with me to find my color family. I LOVE my color. It balances my by natural Auburn with highlights that look dynamic and natural. I can't say enough about how much I loved it here. The front desk staff was warm and friendly. I came in and waited for a very short time before Colin took me over and talked about what I wanted done. Then I had the most relaxing hair washing/scalp massage experience ever. I almost fell asleep. It was beautiful. As far as my hair cut goes-- I truly couldn't be happier. Colin really listened to me and gave me exactly what I wanted. I've been to a few other salons in DC and paid good money to get bad haircuts. The price here was very reasonable and I got a great haircut...worth every penny. I will definitely be coming back! I have been living in DC for almost five years and I wish I had known about this place from day one! I have tried countless salons and have had many mediocre experiences at Aveda. Those are all in the past now that I found Michael Anthony Salon! I have been getting my hair cut by Nathan and he is truly amazing. He is wonderful with short haircuts for women that can be fitted to on-the-go/I don't want to spend all morning on my hairlifestyle. He gives me lots of tips, honest feedback about products. I like how thoughtful he is too - when I ask for something other than "the usual" he'll say "Well you know....I think this type of haircut would look really good on you....". I have never been disappointed by Nathan. I get compliments everytime I get my haircut by him. In addition to the haircuts he gives one thing I really like about Nathan is how laid-back he is. When I get my haircut I like to chit chat, but I honestly don't like to talk much. I don't feel pressured to talk, and it also doesn't feel awkward not talk. As an introvert I appreciate that. As for the salon everyone is really friendly. The space is always neat and tidy. There is not hair all over the floor - it is swept up frequently. They have always been on time. I've gone to a lot of salons that were chatty and chaotic where I got the same haircut over and over and over and over and when I asked for advice about changing things up, got nothing. In this salon everything is on time and handled smoothly. I've seen both Hunter and Da and can recommend both of them with no reservation. Da actually asked if I wanted to change things up and that gave me the courage to go shorter than I ever have before. Love it! I've got a head full of naturally white hair. No one here is fazed by that or thinks I need to go "granny" with my hair (I'm not granny-aged yet, the white hair is early). Also, no one assumed I wanted to dye it to hide it (and I don't). I love this place. It's so simple and comfortable, and the entire room is filled with friendly conversation---feels like a family as opposed to just a place to get your hair done. When you walk in, you'll be offered something to drink. The shampoo ladies give a wonderful scalp massage! Paul Mitchell products are always a plus. MAS consistently ends up on "Best Of" lists, so I'd make an appointment---their website makes this easy. Collin did a fantastic job with my long, curly hair, making MAS a rare find for this kinky-headed white girl. Street parking seems like it's at a premium, so I'd recommend biking, Ubering, or taking the metro (Eastern Market stop is about two blocks away.) read more

I'm still just flabbergasted. Went in for a first apt today and they were running late. Fine, no problem. I brought a book. Stylist was kind and apologetic. I had really long hair, like past my bra strap and nearly to my waist. I also had a baby 16 months ago so my re growth is weird. I asked to keep it long and take off maybe 3 inches while visually showing both how much I wanted cut and where I wanted it to land (bustline rather than level of underwire). Stylist takes scissors and cuts a bunch off dry, and says "that's lighter!" I couldn't see what had been taken off. And sends me for a wash. Wash was wonderful, great massage. Then I'm seated for the cut, and the stylist takes off more length in the back (I still haven't seen how much is gone) and then dries it. It's now barely past my shoulders. She took off 8-9 inches of hair. I've been crying all afternoon. I'm so sad and angry. Stylist was very kind and friendly. Also just a totally blunt cut despite me initially asking for some very light layers so the bottom won't flare. But was too scared to let her cut anymore so said to just leave it blunt. She spent less than 5 minutes on the cut, and about 10 on the blow dry. I know because I was finally seated at 25 after the hour for an appointment but n the hour and walked out the door at 44 after the hour. Just unbelievable. read more

Nothing like paying $154.00 for hi-lighting that looked like dull dishwater. To add salt to my wounds, they expected me to leave the shop with tangled soaking wet hair in the middle of November! When I asked for someone to dry my hair so I could see the color, the shampoo woman asked me if I brought my own dryer!!!!! Bring my own dryer to a hair salon??? They didn't even comb out the tangles!My colorist never bothered to check on my color and had the shampoo person put toner on my hair that turned it greenish grey!! After the damage was done, she came by to say "It looks perfect ". Don't know how she could tell, my hair was soaking wet and looked dark brown. Absolutely horrible experience and terrible service. I don't know where to begin! After just moving to the area from NW DC, I had my hair BUTCHERED by a nearby Capitol Hill salon. It was the worst cut I think I ever had. It was truly terrible - uneven, choppy In the worst way possible. Old men at work came up to me to tell me my hair "looked crooked." I gave it a few weeks to grow out and then desperately made an appointment with Mickey. He was able to fit me in the next weekend, and restored my dignity. Mickey is wonderful - he listened to what I said before getting started and worked patiently to transform my hair from a complete disaster. He had nothing to work with but somehow still gave me a cut that I keep getting compliments on. Quite a few times, he mentioned how upset he was about what a terrible cut I got. You can tell he takes pride in giving people a cut that makes them look AND feel good. He told me to call him anytime to fix anything that bothered me. But, nothing bothers me! I saw Mickey for a cut and he is just incredible. I couldn't be happier. He was cleaned my hair right up despite very little direction on my part about what I was looking for. He has a wonderful eye for both balance - my layers are well considered given my part - and for what looks good on your face. The price was quite reasonable given the location and caliber of the salon. I think it was ~$100. I booked maybe three weeks out so nothing crazy. I am so relieved to have found such a great stylist.
