I was amazed by the quality and selection of menu options. the drinks are phenomenal, and they even present them in an enclosed glass case with smoke. really fun! and the food.. where to begin! each dish is so flavorful and fresh, i dont believe there is a bad menu item to choose from. we ordered and shared: chips & guac, esquites, steak tacos, papas a la mezcal, salmon, and chicken milanese. all the food was exceptional. and to finish, we split the churros dessert - wow! highly recommend. overall, the staff and service was exceptional. and the interior is beautiful. Mezcal was a restaurant I have been wanting to go to since it opened up. I took my fiance for her birthday and we had the PERFECT experience there. The Michelin Guide has yet to visit New Jersey and award any stars but if they did, Mezcal would certainly get 2 if not 3 stars! This restaurant doesn't just serve good food, it is an experience! The first room we went into was an atrium decorated for Day of the Dead and looked beautiful. We opened the door to the restaurant portion and were warmly greeted by the smells of the kitchen and two hostesses. One of the hostesses asked if we wanted a tour of the restaurant which we happily agreed with! The decorations were a Mexican gothic vibe with each wall being decorated as if they were beautiful canvases. The bar when looked at has the illusion of being on fire. The room my fiance and I sat in was decorated with agave plants and was very intimate which was appropriate for the occasion. Once we were seated the real fun started. Little did we know that with each cocktail we ordered, there would be a fun experience associated with it. We first ordered a Margarita drink for 2 called "No Bullsh*t" it was brought out in a bull decanter and set on fire when our waitress brought it over. Deep and powerful flavors kicked off our wonderful night. Next a bowl of chips that were cooked in beef tallow were brought out. The chips were flavorful as well as the salsa though they were a little hard to bite and chew which may be my only critique of this wonderful establishment. We finished our drinks and ordered two appetizers as well as 2 more drinks for each of us. My fiance ordered a "Cosmo Loca" which was brought out in a fairytale serving tray that clouded the cocktail completely until the lid was taken off. I ordered a traditional margarita which didn't come with a presentation but had a big salt rim and was delicious. For our appetizers we ordered "Stuffed Poblano Peppers" which was flavor packed with chicken, cheese, bean sauce, chipotle crema, and mango relish" taste and texture wise perfect with a good amount of spice. We also ordered "Papas a La Mezcal" a potato dish that is baked, flash fried and served with chorizo, garlic butter, truffle pecorino, and truffle aioli. I must admit I was a little disappointed my fiance picked a potato dish but I couldn't have been more wrong with my feelings! This was my favorite dish at the restaurant. It was well crafted, full of flavor and I couldn't stop eating it! It also looked beautiful in the plate. I skipped the next round of drinks (I was driving) but my fiance ordered one of their seasonal cocktails that was brought out in a sugar skull holder that was suspended on a vine. It was one of the most beautiful presentations for a cocktail I have experienced. I did taste the drink and it was smooth and refreshing. For our main course I ordered the Yucatán chicken dish. The chicken was cooked well and came with corn tortillas as well as pickled onions, beans, and sauce to make your own tacos with! You get a lot of food with this dish, it was a half of a chicken. There was no way I was finishing it all but I enjoyed every bite! My fiance had "Lobster Paella Risotto" this was the second best item I tasted that night. Maybe I should learn my lesson and have my fiance order for me from now on, she seems to have a skill for picking out the best items on the menu without fail. This dish looked beautiful, tasted even better and made a lasting impression on me as well as my beautiful bride-to-be. Too full to order dessert (next time!) we both split their famous frozen espresso martini. Again a beautiful presentation, nothing flashy but the drink comes with cold brew foam on top with a birthday message for her. That was a nice touch and made us feel valued. The drink was also unique in that it was made with tequila instead of vodka. Different from a traditional espresso martini and not how we usually like ours but it was nice to try it with a different base liquor. Mezcal made a great impression on us. Everything from the well presented cocktails, to the delicious and expertly crafted food, to the intense and beautiful atmosphere, as well as the friendly and knowledgeable staff was just perfect. Let me tell you, the BEST dining experience I've ever had in my life. I hate myself that I forgot our servers name, Nathan? (Tall bald guy sorry!) But he was amazing! From the moment we walked in, management, all the servers, treated not just us but every customer with respect, offering even a tour of the restaurant! They treat you as a friend that is visiting their home and not a customer. Fantastic! They had a prefix menu which was amazing, the most amazing cocktails, their a la carte menu was fantastic too. They also verify any allergies and ask all the necessary questions that most restaurants will not. And cause it was my birthday they kept reminding me in the nicest way calling me "birthday boy", everyone saying happy birthday, customized drinks, and they remember your name the entire night. I've been to high end places before, but Mezcal kicks it out of the park for me. Best experience I've ever had, the most amazing delicious food. And everyone is really the sweetest there. Six friends and I visited Mezcal last evening for drinks and dinner. We started with wonderfully creative cocktails at the bar, then were led to our table. Since we were a party of seven, we encountered the all-too-familiar issue: being squeezed into a booth for six, with the seventh person awkwardly crammed at the end. For nearly $1,000 for dinner, we expected a more comfortable arrangement. The booth itself was tight--our arms brushing against each other for lack of space--while the table was so wide that the friends directly across from us felt eight feet away. Add to that the thumping, overly loud music, and conversation--arguably the heart of a Girls Night Out--was nearly impossible. We asked for a more suitable table but were turned down, even though better tables were being held for guests who hadn't yet arrived. On a positive note, our server was lovely, and the pacing of food delivery was spot-on. Unfortunately, the food itself rarely lived up to its appearance. Dishes looked spectacular, but the flavors consistently fell short. Many appetizers and sides were overwhelmingly salty. Even the chips and salsa--a dish that should be irresistibly simple--were a miss, with salsa so salty and devoid of deep, sweet, tomato flavor, we weren't thrilled with it. We ate it because it was there, not because it was flavorful. The octopus, however, was a standout and much enjoyed. My "Jumbo" Crab Louie, on the other hand, offered more lettuce than crab, with small, unimpressive pieces drowned in dressing. I really wanted to simply savor the fresh crab. The mixed greens salad, though visually striking, was disjointed and unbalanced. It lacked enough goat cheese, toasted corn, and there were no promised pickled shallots. The cider vinaigrette was both bland and heavy-handed, while the paper-thin-sliced radish was so bitter it was nearly inedible. I thought it came from a potpourri bowl. As for the Chicken Milanese, it came buried under yet another pile of dressed greens--essentially two salads back-to-back. A more informed server might have warned us about this redundancy. My halibut, while fresh, was disappointingly small for $60. It came with tasty corn and plain white rice (a welcome neutral base), but both accompanying sauces missed the mark--one cloyingly salty (tomatillo), the other bland (sweet potato puree). How flavor is taken OUT of sweet potatoes is beyond me, unless they didn't start with fresh potatoes, but rather, canned. The pork chop, though beautiful, was declared "offensively salty." The salmon, however, earned praise from one guest. The esquites (corn), a side dish at $15, was swimming in a chili-lime mayo that tasted more like plain sour cream--most of it left untouched. The evening ended with a birthday gesture that fell flat. A small tray was brought out with a candle, a skeleton statuette, and a lighter. After multiple attempts to ignite a powder meant to mimic fireworks over the little statue, the display fizzled. And that was it. No cookie, no cupcake, nothing edible. For a $1,000 meal, would it really have killed them to place a cookie under the candle? Overall, Mezcal dazzles with aesthetics--cocktails, plating, atmosphere--but falters where it matters most: comfort, balance, and flavor. Dining areas should be styled for the comfort of the clientele, not the staff. Just a few miles away on the same road is a 5-star restaurant that elevates food to the next level and beyond - with so much flavorful magic in every heavenly bite that your eyes roll back in your head. (Like upscale tomatoes, it's "Heirloom.") If you're gonna play with the big boys, you better bring something worthy from kitchen to table. Loud samba music and pretty fire is great, but it's not enough. The kitchen needs to bring substance to match the style. read more

Mezcal is undoubtedly one of the hottest restaurants in Central NJ right now - the place was full even on a weekday night. When you first enter you feel like you've been teleported out of Old Bridge into a different world. The vibe of the decor is matched with stellar service, both on entering and at the table. The presentation of the drinks and food is memorable. Flames and smoke are abundant in the presentations and watching dishes and drinks get served provides live entertainment! It definitely creates a lot of "oohs and aahs" and brings out a lot of smartphone cameras. We had a salad and a stuffed poblano to start. Both were very tasty and nicely presented. We accompanied the starters with 2 cocktails - both very good and uniquely served. Our entrees were a seafood special, skirt steak w/chimmichurri and a side of carrots. The seafood was good although at $69 the mix could have featured fewer clams and better parts of the lobster. I looked back at my old review of their other restaurant, 618, and was surprised that I had also had the skirt steak there. My reaction was the same - it was well cooked but not spectacular. My son ate the leftovers and he concurred - not as good as what I buy at Tuscany and throw on the grill. The carrots were the star of the show - enough butter to probably knock a year off your life but worth it! Mezcal is worth trying due to the amazing atmosphere, service and menu. The food is generally good but in my opinion the price point demands that it be truly craveable and here I felt it was a bit short. read more

Went to Mezcal's restaurant tonight and was pleasantly impressed. Decorated well. Servers were well trained, courteous, friendly, and polite. Food was delicious and presented well. Mixed drinks were visually appealing as well as tasty. Met the GM, Ed, who was visiting with customers to make sure they were happy. He was obviously doing an excellent job because the restaurant was extremely busy but running smoothly. The bar works like a well-oiled machine under the direction of the lovely, friendly and efficient bar manager. All in all, a lovely and delicious experience. We have been waiting for mezcal to open because we love 618 and its one of our favorite restaurant to go too for a special occasion. We came as a group of 6 and our server (rick?) was very attentive and explained the menu well. We had the speciality drinks spice is nice that one that came in a skull head and it was delicious.my husband had a pineapple margarita and he enjoyed it as well. We shared the papas ala mezcal which are similar to the smashed potatoes at 618 and they were amazing. For dinner i did the skirt steak tacos and my husband had the skirt steak both enjoyable. We had a side of the street corn which was only half the bowl so that was disappointing. Mezcal is a great spot to go for a couple as it is pricey but its definitely an experience one should go for. read more

I have to start off by saying what a beautiful restaurant. And the service is amazing - though they took long after dinner to check on everything. A lot of the drinks/deserts were picked because they have a 'presentation'. They also came buy with free tequila shots and the Esquites side dish was complementary. Both had an amazing presentation. We loved both cocktails - they were excellent. We ordered 2 apps - the stuffed poblano and the Queso. Both were good. I have had similar queso and other places. It was in the middle of the pack. I don't like peppers, so I didn't try it, but everyone else liked it. Dinner was very mixed. One couple ordered the 40oz Tomahawk to Share. It was not very good. Ordered medium rare, maybe a bit over and DRY, some left over as no one liked it. We had the spinellas rib cap and the Halibut. While my wife liked the Halibut itself, much of the stuff on the plate was cold - except for the fish. My ribcap was very good. Everyone liked it best. Sides.... mixed. Eqsuites (corn) was excellent. Mac and Cheese was very good. Whipped potatoes reminded me of Swanson frozen dinners from when I was a kid. Desert... Churros for 2. 2 stuffed churros under 3 scoops of ice cream with a fancy fire presentation. It was ok - though $29 just for that. This bill came to $720 for 4 people including tax and tip. I can't say that anything that I ate was bad, some was very good. However, at that price (this might be the most expensive dinner I have ever had) everything should be excellent. We ate at the Capital Grill in Cherry Hill for lunch last week. We had apps, main course and desert. Every course was superior to Mezcal and the bill was $125 with tax and tip for 2. Overall, this restaurant is style over substance IMHO. When we first sat down, we were all talking about making additional reservations. Had an absolutely awesome experience at Mezcal. From the second you walk in the door the place just has a great vibe -- awesome atmosphere, great music, and a really cool energy all around. The drinks were excellent and the appetizers were great, but the porterhouse steak completely stole the show. Hands down the best steak I've ever had. Cooked perfectly and full of flavor. We finished the night with gelato that was honestly unbelievable and the perfect way to end the meal. What really made the night though was the staff. Everyone was incredible and you can tell they really care about the experience they're giving people. Huge shoutout to our bartender Heather, our waitress April, and manager Alessandro who stopped by the table to make sure everything was perfect. That kind of service really makes the whole night even better. The owners are great people and it clearly shows in the place they've built. Mezcal is truly a 10/10 and I highly recommend it. It's impossible for a table to get their cocktails at same time since many of the cocktails arrive in a convoluted and unnecessary preparation. We just wanted our drinks. And they are pushy with upselling (bottled cocktails to go?!) items. Especially after we've already spent a lot on cocktails, appetizers, and entrees. I'd also like to see the servers be more authentic and less reliant on canned, prepared verbiage that the management wants them to spew. Came here for a second time. Still top tier service, but definitely different than the first time because I originally came during the opening time/preview. The place is beautiful. One thing I noticed is the music was so loud tonight. Literally felt like I was in a club, which was a little too much for us we thought while we were dining. Also the tsp water still tastes awful. We brought it up the first time and they said they would fix it, but we were told now that it had to do with the town. Our meals were very good and the spinalis was still delicious. The Mac and cheese this time was a bit spicier than we remembered from the last time. Overalls, we had a great time still. Worth checking out if you haven't. read more

The cocktail ideas were clever and were tasty but my drink was served in an opaque ceramic mug, very cool looking but clearly designed to hide the fact that there was more ice in it than actual alcohol. This is the first time I wish I would have been able to give 6 stars! I've heard about this place from multiple people, and everyone was singing very different praises. So finally, I gave in and got a dinner reservation on Sunday early afternoon. Yes, this place does requires a reservation for a dinner, but I specifically confirmed that it is possible to come and sit at the bar, and the line may not exist at all: there were more than 10 seats available that I could see. Bar does has this fake fire that most people take pictures off, should be fun. Arrived, got pleasantly surprised by the first lobby room, even took some pictures. We were about 10 minutes early, so I was completely prepared to wait or seat at the bar, instead hostess spent some time with us showing around, the bull, tequila storage (that's how I call it), different parts of the dining hall, everything. She even suggested that we do pay a visit to the restrooms, even just to check them out. Table was ready, plenty of distance from others, music just a notch too loud, but completely fine. Our server, Nick from Serbia, seemed to know every dish and drink and was able to answer all the questions. We went for the full tower of seafood, and received octopus as a compliment. Let's just say octopus was gone before anything was touched on the tower. I would come back just to have a cocktail at the bar and have that leg once again. Seafood was amazing, I loved the gigantic shrimp and oysters, my girl was in love with the crab salad setup on top of the tower. Also I got to mention those small medicine-like bottles with vinegar and sauce: you drop just the perfect amount and crack few jokes while doing so. We did order several round of drinks, the only mistake is that we did not order bull carafe first, and that drink is more of a starter. The smoked skull comes with a little fire show, and pistachios thing is one drink I specifically remember. For the main course I decided on a porkchop, having had tomahawk just few days ago: else I would go for prehistoric choice; Im still panning a come back for it. And my girl went for some grilled fish. Her dish was everything you'd expect from a fish in a great restaurant. Mine was able to surprise me. It was slightly different cut than I expected, and I think its a better choice. Cooked throughout, but not overcooked, served at a perfect temperature, and with several sauces on the plate, I had to eat every last bit, even knowing that it will cost me the desert. I'd say this was in the top 2 pork dishes that I ever had in a restaurant. An important note is that you have to order your own side dish, we had those mini cauliflower things, and were not disappointed at all. Having consumed all that there was no room left for deserts, so I recommend splitting that tower for a table of 4, or just sticking to 1 normal-sized app. Else you will have to take desert to go, which was a perfect ending for the night. I will be back, not sure if it would be a dinner or just bar visit; but this restaurant leaves long lasting impression for your eyes, ears and stomach. Don't forget to tip waiters: this is a very rare restaurant where I did not see staff looking at their phones. read more
