Menu from their website (9/2024)...NOTE: bait n switch! Their new menu is 30%-50% higher now!
    Andie E.

The food could have easily been 5 Stars, if not for some questionable business practices. More about that later. .. Let's start with the Good... The Good: The Food! The Food! The Food! Each dish that we had was delicious. Their blend of spices were amazing; each dish better than the next. Here are the dishes we tried: MENU (shared by 4ppl): - Mini Naga Singara ($6.49/4pcs): this was the only dish that I thought was "ordinary"; not necessarily bad; just ok. - Chicken Lollipop ($8/4pcs): Fantastic! The chicken was prepared well, and the accompanying sauce was wonderful; slightly sweet with a sneaky spicy kick! - Mezbani Beef ($18.99/large): tender pieces of beef (*with bones), in a magnificent spice-blended sauce. - Chui Jhal Beef ($19.99/large): tender pieces of beef (no bones), in a magnificent spice-blended sauce. I actually had a problem deciphering this sauce and the sauce in the Mezbani Beef dish. Although, there was a delicious whole garlic in this dish. Make sure you try this garlic...it was delish! - Sorisha Ilish ($15.99/1pc of fish): warning: this dish has lots of tiny bones...but it is soooo worth getting! This may have been my fave dish tonight! The fish itself was good but the sauce was incredible! If you don't want to deal with the tiny bones, then pick another fish dish; there are a few to pick from on their menu. - Basmati Rice ($3.99/large bowl): Note that rice does NOT come with any of the entrees. You must order separately. Also note that when the waiter tells you to let them know if you want more rice...you will be charged for it! Our waiter made it seem like it was free refills, but yup, the extra charge showed up on our bill. - Water ($2/12 oz bottle): No tap water. You must buy bottled water from them. They gifted us 6 bottles of complimented water tonight (shared by 11 ppl). Thank you! Ok, sadly, here is "the Bad': My main gripe is the feel of bait and switch with their menu, and the feeling of being nickeled and dimed. This restaurant has only been open for 4 months, and their menu (which is still currently posted on their website), is already outdated. Some menu items have already been increased by 30% - 50%. How does a restaurant open for such a short time, have such a discrepancy in prices? I can understand increasing prices slightly but 30%-50% increases after opening just 4 months ago, scream bait n switch! They should at least update the menu on their own website! (See my photos for current menu, as of 10/7/2024). Integrity and honesty in business (& in life) is important. Reputation is everything! Once trust is broken, it's hard to get back. Service & Hospitality: Despite the questionable menu, our server was very nice. Service was very good, and he even gave us complimentary bottles of water (after we complained about being nickeled and dimed). As I mentioned, this could easily have been a 5 Star review, if not for the appearances of possible shadiness. I hope management updates their website menu for transparency.. I'd like to think this was an honest mistake, and not because The New Yorker gave them a great review....just sayin'!

He helped me pronounce the food items I couldn't get correct. Overall he gave me choices and options that were great that I really enjoyed. I don't remember the bartender names but he was great as well. His drinks were perfectly blended I felt like I was on vacation on a beach having them. But when I come back I definitely want to choose them! Ambiance was LUXURIOUS. Very clean, utensils were very clean as if it the a grand opening. I love the aesthetics and the color coordination and to the plates and silverware. Overall I recommend anyone especially if it's your first time. We are from the north shore of Long Island and our favorite Indian restaurants are located in Hicksville but no more. We now have Yaar in Astoria to go to. Run don't walk to Yaar. You can thank me later. We ordered the butter chicken, chicken tikka masala and shrimp biryani for the 3 of us. Everything came out piping hot and delicious. The portions were very generous and the wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I highly recommend Yaar Indian Restaurant. We happened to be dining there during a World Cup game so there was a TV on in the back (not sure if that's their usual setup). I ordered the chicken tandoori (bone-in), my SO got the chicken tikka masala, and we shared a garlic naan. I got a masala chai to drink and my SO just stuck to water. We did not have to wait too long for the food. My chicken tandoori came out on a sizzling plate with a side of rice. The chicken was so tender, juicy, and flavorful. I ate the slices of onion on the sizzling plate with the chicken and rice. The garlic naan was nice and hot, crisp on the outside, studded with plenty of garlic, and soft and chewy on the inside. It was good for sopping up the chicken tikka masala sauce. My SO felt that my bone-in chicken tasted better than the chicken that came with the tikka masala, so he would consider ordering one of the other bone-in options next time (butter chicken (bone-in) or chef's special chicken (bone-in) biryani). Service was attentive. The servers refilled our water several times and checked on how we liked our dishes. We didn't have dessert this time, but we might next time we come because there will definitely be a next time.

Taking over for another desi-owned spot (#1) several years ago, they've done a much better job of capturing an audience by focusing on a niche of Goan inspired foods, along with a slew of classic Indian dishes that span from north to south. The interior is modest and quaint, and a one bright / memorable outdoor setup during the pandemic. The restaurant is not big, but they've managed to cram in a good number of tables to make it place for 30 folks. Takeout and delivery are also very popular, and I've been fortunate to have had all of the above. Some immediate standouts: goan fish curry, xacuti curry, and the caldeen curry are quite excellent and all come from the Indo-Portuguese side of the menu, which are all loaded with flavor. Additionally, the tandoori selection (especially the chicken malai, seekh kebab, and methi salmon) and variety of curries (rogan josh, korma, jalfrezi, makhani, etc.) are also very flavorful. As with many other Indian places, especially ones that cater to the southern palate, there is an excellent vegetarian selection. The saag chana is one of my go-tos, but the peeli dal, bhindi masala, gobi manchurian over their lemon or tomato rice all merit a big thumbs up. Ownership has likely changed since their initial start, which explains why the staff and "family owned" management has all gotten different looks before and after the pandemic. The other major issue has been pricing, which definitely feels premium at $21-23, for portions that sometimes feels like the size of a hockey puck. The product is still good and the pickins in Sunnyside (#2) are slim, so I realize that for some people, this is the only (Indian) game in town. ___________ (#1) Biriyani House: https://www.yelp.com/biz/biriyani-house-sunnyside (#2) Unless of course, we're counting all the Nepalese spots that also serve Indian cuisine.

The food types are similar but offer different spice/flavor profiles. They have a large section of noodles, soup, and rice. A veggie section with various combos of cauliflower, potatoes, onion, bamboo, blackened peas, mustard greens, and spices. Some of the Indian dishes: paneer butter masala, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala. Some of the appetizers include crispy tofu, fried soybeans, a Nepali snack platter with marinated meat, goat, beef tripe, sliced beef tongue, fried jerky, duck. They also have a momo section. We had their famous chicken lollipops (essentially fried chicken) and it was crispy and spicy (in a good way). We also had sadeko (marinated or tossed) bacon, which was rich and tender. I had one of their Nepali cocktails, which was pleasantly spicy (the chatpata aam, made with tequila, spicy chatpatey syrup, and mango puree). Service was attentive. Inside is cozy, lots of dark wood and colorful flags. They also often have entertainment in the evening, so I would love to return to hear some live music while trying more Nepali cuisine.

The first time that I came here was about 3 years ago with a few friends and we liked the food - the beef tongue was different and super memorable and the jhol momos were just swimming in flavorful curry. Made me want to come back again. Fast-forward three years later, I feel like things have changed significantly. Or maybe I didn't catch them at their best, but I came with another group of friends and I just felt overall disappointed with the food, as did my friends who were excited to try Himalayan food for the first time. I had the goat dhat bhat and the small amount of meat served in aesthetically pleasing bowls to mask the portion was disappointing--and this was not a lunch special or anything. I mainly got a big bone and realistically got about 2-3 small bites of actual meat, while there was an overwhelming amount of rice and veggies. The momos also tasted like they were pre-made and heated or steamed up again because the dough was definitely a little rough. Overall, this experience was a meh for me. I think it is a social staple for many Nepalese and Tibetans in the area, and just for that.
