Meximodo - Tiny margarita, no ice. Heard drinks were weak -- sadly true. Save your self go to the Italian spot! - Mexican Near Me - Metuchen, New Jersey

First time coming here last night! Off the bat, the inside is superrr cute - the bar wall is amazing. Love the interior design from the shelves to the ceiling decor to the painted wall mural. Also our seats were super comfy! Was digging the 'pinkish hue' and all the lighting! They even have a super cute upstairs area with a bar and swing chair. Our waitress, Debra, was super chill and attentive. She did a great job! The other staff helped out as well which was nice. Our reservation was actually at 11pm (only one available lol) but we got there a little after 10 and they sat us right away. The restaurant was open until midnight. Once it hit midnight, I did feel like they wanted to close down ASAP - I don't blame them but did feel slightly rushed though. As far as the food we tried the Acapulco-style ceviche, chicken tacos and barbacoa tacos. My friend who's dad is from Acapulco thought the ceviche was ok. I found it refreshing. As a side note, the chips and dip that they served promptly when we sat down were delicious! The chips tasted like buttery popcorn. Love the green verde like sauce. We had eaten prior to arriving so couldn't savor the food as much as I wanted but the tacos were ok! They are small, street-like tacos served on corn tortillas. The barbacoa was flavorful I liked the spice and onion mixed in. I personally found the chicken a little dry/bland but then again I am a hot sauce fanatic so that may have helped! To finish, even though we weren't that hungry haha, we had the churros with both dips - OMG sooooo good!! The drinks were really delicious and I have to admit probably helped up our appetite! Lol. The Cantarito was refreshing and served in a super cute glass - just a little sweet for me. My friend enjoyed the Manarita 'inspired by the Rock' lol. We also finished with the G64 tequila which was amazing. Overall, super cute, lively and fun place with attentive staff and enjoyable Mexican food - but even more delicious drinks! When we walked out I just wished we were in Miami ;) read more

My family went to dinner here for my brother's birthday. The ambiance of the restaurant is awesome, I really loved the pink decor and colorful tequila bar. The design is really quite jaw dropping and worth a trip in it of itself. The food was delicious, they had some very unique exciting items on the menu. I will say however, for the portions of everything, food and drinks were severely overpriced. Some of the portions were laughable and for a $600 dinner, I was hoping for a few leftovers. But alas, quality over quantity, I enjoyed every bite I took. The service was very good, our server did a great job at checking back m and answering all of our dietary questions. The acoustics made it difficult to hear everyone at the table, I don't think the music was necessarily too loud but sound did not seem to travel well even for 3 feet. The draft pours of beer were not in pint glasses which is just not cool, and we weren't able to request a taste of anything on draft (first time I'd ever experienced that). My biggest complaint would be that the server was not allowed to put a pitcher of water at the table. I'm sure this is some preference the owner has to servers pouring water for guests but by request we should have been able to get a pitcher for the table. Honestly the overall experience was a good one, but I've never heard so many "no's" while dining. I've been serving for years and no matter where I work, management is always eager to be flexible for customer requests. The inability for our server to put water on the table really sat wrong with me. Whoever made that decision, it's a bad one! I may find my way back for another visit solely for the decor and fun bar. P.S. please get some pint glasses read more

New restaurant alert we were lucky enough to sit at the bar as tables were fully Booked. The bartender Cody was nice And attentive despite having a full house He made time to speak with Us and got our order in, in a timely manner. The drinks were delicious and the complimentary chips were so fresh as were the salsas. I ordered the pork belly and the flavors were honestly very good. But it wasn't a filling meal. It was a piece of pork belly with some apple pieces. The carne asada was probably My favorite. In all these dishes the flavors were excellent. The mole with chicken was very Authentic with the sweet and spicy. This place is a must visit again read more

SUMMARY Be prepared to wait, even with a reservation in a cramped waiting area. Everything to me was mediocre except the street corn. The street corn was the highlight of the night and I would come back just for that. The hanger carne asada was really good as well, but the charred spring onions that came with the steak were flavorless and honestly should be replaced with a different side in my opinion. I love the fact that they have a good amount of options for mocktails it's rare and a nice thing to see. The service was okay. It was busy so I didn't expect spectacular service, but definitely a long wait time for things like water and sometimes she would forget things we asked for. The ambiance however was beautiful, inviting, and fun. This place to me is okay and after drinks and food can become pretty pricey and most of it isn't worth it. DRINKS The drinks were very liquor forward and if you like to just taste only the alcohol then these drinks are for you, but if you like a well balanced cocktail like me look elsewhere. The lychee por favor - was the worst drink when it came to flavor it didn't taste like alcohol like the others but the flavor was strange and pungent flavor. The mango margarita, and the dragonfruit margarita both didn't taste like the flavor, just tasted like a regular margarita with a lot of alcohol. La Catrina- was a strong dark tequila drink. I personally didn't like it, but my friend did. Cucumber margarita mocktail was really refreshing and delicious but in my opinion needs a little bit of sweetness added. FOOD Tortillas and salsa served to every table. I feel like the brown salsa and the guacamole were missing something and needed more flavor. I'm not a huge spicy person so I'm not going to even speak about if the red salsa was good but yes it is spicy. Finally the pico de gallo is normal nothing special. Street corn- ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, scraped the plate! Pollo al adobo tacos were good according to my friend however they were spicy which is surprising since on the menu it doesn't specify that it has any sort of kick/ spice to it. Steak tacos were also good according to my friend and a little spicy. Hanger carne asada steak was delicious expect the charred spring onions it came with. The onions were flavorless and overcooked. Sweet plantains- they were good once you took off the unnecessary flavorless sauce they drizzled on top of them. DESSERT Churros- Eh, they were okay nothing special. read more

Fast service professional staff and friendly environment The restaurant itself offers free parking at a nearby parking deck that's just a building or two over. The restaurant has been beautifully decorated and the staff seems to now what they are doing. The menu is easy and not overly complicated. We sat at the bar and got a view of the insane tequila options offered here. Try a drink or two. You won't be disappointed read more

Good food, fun ambiance and great service! From the moment you are seated they bring out salsas and crispy tostadas. They don't have tortilla chips but breaking apart the tostadas are kinda fun. Salsa - they start you with two mild salsas, a medium pick de gallo and one hot habanero (I think). The first round of salsa is on the house but if you want more they will charge. We also ordered the guacamole. There are several types and we got one with mango and pineapple on top. Tacos - I ordered the shrimp tacos. The tortilla is fresh and soft, it's a corn tortilla. They remind me of SF street tacos! Yum! The shrimp had a good grill taste and they were fresh. Sides - For sides we got the plantains as well as beans and rice. The plantains were ripe and fried well. The rice was white rice but taste like it was cooked in stock so it had flavor. See pics. Overall the tastes were authentic and the portion sizes were good. We left full. The service was also very attentive! Aris was our waiter. The prices were a bit high for Edison NJ. But coming from NYC, it wasn't too bad. The interior design felt like I was in California. It had great vibes, hip artwork, and nice mood lighting. It's a nice family restaurant and also a casual date spot. I would come back next time in Edison. read more

Updated Review! 11/3/24 Hi all, I took my husband this past weekend to celebrate Diwali with Meximodo's crossover Diwali menu. It was a hit with him! We did the Indian street corn chaat, he got the butter chicken tacos, I did the chorizo enchiladas and fried plantains and we finished with churros. He also ordered the Firecracker - a Diwali inspired cocktail and I ordered the Tamarindo. I think the food was better than when we came opening week. Love to see that improvement. Fat things: I did request in my Open Table reservation no bar height stools (you know one of my legs inevitably falls asleep smh) and they did honor that and gave us floor seating. While the chairs were sturdy the spot where the webbing met the frame rubbed against the outside of one of my legs. I was debating letting it go but my husband immediately asked if the seating was ok for me and flagged down a waiter (this is why we're 20 years deep in this love thing). I asked for bench style seating and at first the person acted like it wouldn't be possible. I do think he initially thought I was asking for a bigger table for 4 vs just a bench seat at a two person table. Then I said ok well is there a manager and it turns out he was the manager. OK great - let's get solutions oriented. He was able to speak with someone else and move us to a 2 person table just a few feet away with bench seating. I'm just not gonna spend $150 and be uncomfortable and that's just all it is to it. I think in general restaurants should check in with patrons when seating them, especially plus size customers and confirm that the seating works. But I also think when purchasing seating products should be tested not only for weight capacity but for comfort. I think anyone with wider hips was gonna feel that rub and it wasn't pleasant. In any event food and service were great and we enjoyed our time out. read more

Meximodo is a fun concept that hits the mark with their drinks. They have a ton of drink options based around tequila and you can almost find any tequila at Meximodo. However, the food missed the mark for the price as the chicken tacos were very dry and the shrimp tacos were okay. The yuca fries were okay and the chips were good. The rice and beans accomplished the job for rice and beans. To me this spot is great to visit for a couple of drinks and appetizers or sides. I would come back for the drinks. read more

I've been wanting to try this place since before the holidays but it's been tough to get a decent reservation time. I was finally able to get a reservation for dinner on Sunday night. The place was pretty full and lively. For my drink I ordered the El Jefe which was smoky from the mezcal with a balanced sweetness from the pineapple juice and a slight medicinal flavor from the green chartreuse. For appetizer we tried the street style corn. It was different than other street corn I've had because it had grilled corn purée mixed with pieces of corn. It also had a slight hint of truffle oil. The combination of everything was really tasty. For mains we ordered the steak and cheese tacos, the chicken mole and a side of plantains. The tacos came with 3 tacos that had a layer of cheese cooked into the inside of the taco shells. The steak was tender and well seasoned and the salsa, onions and cilantro added a nice freshness and lightness to the dish. The chicken mole was my favorite dish of the night. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the mole had such a nice, deep, complex flavor. Lastly, you can't go wrong with perfectly sweet plantains. We ordered it with the sauce on the side because the waitress said the green sauce might be a little spicy (my wife doesn't handle spice well). With the ingredients combined it was that nice sweet and salty bite that leaves you craving more. For dessert we ordered the churros. This was the most disappointing part of the meal. We love churros and had high hopes since the other food had been amazing thus far but the inside of the churros seemed to be still kind of raw and gummy. The outside was nice and crispy and the chocolate sauce it came with was great but the inside texture was not very pleasant. Overall I would definitely come back here. The restaurant feels upscale and the bar is beautiful with their wall of tequilas. Our server was also friendly and gave us good suggestions. I'm curious to try more of their food and drinks. read more

This is the new place to be!! I've already visited twice and will make this a regular spot -- I love the vibes, food, and drinks. Metuchen is pretty popping with great spots for food & drink and Meximodo is no exception!! Stop in for brunch, dinner, or just drinks. Reservations are preferred but not required, however I would recommend it as it is starting to be a very busy spot now!! Weekda They start you off with delicious seasoned popcorn. It hit the spot with the perfect tang and slight sweetness while we browsed the menu and sipped drinks. The menu is pretty varied but pretty small. It's definitely got some tasty options. However, the tequila bar is what steals the show at Meximodo. The drinks were all delicious and I appreciated the presentation and care that went into them. They also have tequila flights, mocktails, and horchata, which I will be trying next time. The enchiladas were very flavorful and vegetarian. I'd note that there weren't too many vegetarian options but -- when I went for brunch I did ask if the huevos rancheros could be made vegetarian but it was not possible, but I'm not sure how it'd be with other entrees. The corn flan was quite good, I haven't had much flan so I was excited to try some. It came with some yummy ice cream and various toppings. Loved the presentation of the dessert as well. Also should definitely note that our server and all the staff we encountered were all super pleasant, kind, and respectful; we felt very welcome and comfortable during each experience here. I'll definitely be back, and would love it if they'd add some more menu options or some specials! However this place is great and I'm happy to support it :) wishing them the best of luck! read more

We went to Meximodo for Sunday brunch - made a reservation on their website and were seated as soon as all members of our party arrived. Every single item ordered from food to drinks was delicious, flavorful, and left little room for complaints. The service was exceptional - our server was helpful and attentive. The ambiance was super cool with the bar and mural being the focus point. We went on New Year's Eve - I can only imagine how much more amazing this spot will be when it's warm and you can use the roof top bar they have. The only draw back was the pricing - this definitely is a spot that is $$$ and reserved for special outings - not your "everyday go to" spot. The food: Chipotle Chocolate Lava Cake - so yummy, rich, with gentle notes of heat and spice after each bite Red Snapper - very flavorful but probably my least favorite because the value for the price didn't show Elotes appetizer - delicious, flavorful, and so worth it Steak and cheese - yummy and stacked flavors with the refried beans and steak and poblano chiles Meximodo salad with steak - underrated and super loaded with flavor and texture. It had outstanding ingredients of nopales and jicama along with so many other ingredients. It could have had a little more steak. read more

The ambiance is nice but the food is so so bad. Presentation of the food looks nice but when you taste it it's not up to par with the prices. For the chicken bacon sandwich the chicken was so unseasoned, it literally lacked basic things like salt, and the sauce they poured in the burger was horrendous, it was maple syrup and chipotle mayo, horrible combo. It was very fatty, didn't taste good and was just a sticky mess. The chicken tenders were undercooked and unseasoned as well, fries didn't have any salt. The chicken tinga tacos were extremely small and also lacked salt. And the desserts were so so small, 12$ for a tiny lava cake is wild. And for the service, the waiter said an item was vegan and proceeded to bring out something that wasn't. Save your money and go somewhere else read more

The food was delicious! Jose H was such a great waiter! Me and my friends had a great time here.

Firstly, let me say that we came last night for the restaurant opening and overall was throughly impressed. For a 1st night, the service was impeccable and you wouldn't of been able to tell they had opened just hours before because the hiccups in service and execution were minimal. The cocktail program is absolutely outstanding with honest to god some of the best cocktails, tequila or otherwise, I have ever had. The El Presidente in particular is dangerously delicious and the Don Julio Blanco they use in it is so smooth, you might be scratching your head to wonder if they actually put it in....trust me they do. Between our table of 4, we ordered a lot of tacos , apps, and sides to share since everything looked good. On taste, this place really nails it out of the part with most of their stuff. In terms of some quick takes: -The Queso is as good as it looks -Don't sleep on the sides...legit the Plantains and Rice and Beans were some of the best bites of the night -The Meximodo salad is huge...but also a bit overdressed -The Tacos have really good flavor but are literally just a bite or 2. The Shrimp in particular has a nice smoky bite to it and the Barbacoa has a spice that really builds till it crests at a lingering mouth on fire crescendo. -The Corn Mushroom Quesadilla is better in theory then in execution and came out a bit soggy -The chef knows his shit. They have Chile En Nogada on the menu which is something I have never seen on a Mexican menu in the states. Bonus points for elevating traditional Mexican dishes that your not gonna find at your local Gringo Mexican/Tex-Mex stop. The only real complaint on the food is just how strange the value for money conundrum is on dishes. It seemed that the dishes that were cheaper and in theory supposed to be smaller, such as sides and apps, were huge given the price and the more expensive dishes, including the tacos and mains, got tinier and tinier the more expensive they became. Either cutting the prices of the tacos or mains by a few bucks or including sides or something to really justify the prices would help it in the long run. The competition for a good higher class Mexican joint in Central NJ is wide open as most places are high priced for mediocre food. Even with a small issues here and there, in just one night, Meximodo has completely blown everyone else out of the water and unabashedly said to the field "Looks like your playing catchup". Will you be seeing me here again? Absolutely. Just look for the Seth Rogen lookalike at the bar with a Cucumber cocktail and a plate of plantains. read more

Meximodo in Metuchen is a delightful gem! The vibe is very cute, perfect for a cozy yet fun brunch. I tried both La Carnita and El Fuego cocktails, and the tequila was top-notch. Came to meximodo for the first time on a weekday for an early dinner. I love the overall decor of the restaurant. The mural on the wall of the bar area is gorgeous. I liked how they greeted me when I arrived. They kept the restaurant very clean and meticulous. The tortilla chips and different salsas was so delicious. The cocktails are great. I took a star away because it took over 30 mins for my fish tacos, which was serving as my appetizer to be ready. Also the carne asada was excessively charred on the outside. Nonetheless, the tacos were delicious. I really loved the hibiscus glaze. My friend enjoyed their Pollo con mole meal. The yuca fries were very tasty. Although the carne asada was charred, it was still pretty flavorful and the majority of the inside was medium well like I requested. My server was really sweet and the staff in general were very professional. I would definitely come back. I was too full to try their dessert so I'll trying that next time I go again. read more

My husband and I came here today to celebrate his birthday. The inside is beautiful. It was our first time there and we made reservations which really is a must. There is a large parking deck right next door. It's free for 3 hours on weekends. We started with drinks. I got the 'Frozen Watermelon Margarita' and my husband got the 'Cantarito' which was Patrón Silver Tequila, Orange Juice, Grapefruit Juice, Grapefruit Soda, Chamoy, Tajín & Fresh Lime. He enjoyed his drink. I am not a huge drinker so my drink was just okay, but it was nothing against the drink. I am just not a big drinker like I said. They also provided us with chips and 4 different types of salsa. They were all delicious but that red one will wake you up! It is HOT! We also got the 'Mexican Chorizo' guacamole which was delicious. For my entree, I got the 'Pork Belly' tacos which were really good. It had a citrus type of sauce on it. It was very flavorful. My husband got the 'Steak and Cheese' tacos which he said he enjoyed but much preferred mine. Lastly, we ended with Dessert. My husband got the 'Chipotle Chocolate Lava Cake' which was served with Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream and Raspberries. He loved this. It was rich, but not spicy at all he said. I got the 'Corn Flan'. I wasn't sure if I would like this but I did! It was a thicker flan than I'm used to but very good, PLUS the cotton candy that came with it had me sold! A 2.9% fee is added to all credit card purchases which was kind of annoying... but overall, the service was very fast and they were keeping everything very clean. Someone was always sweeping, getting plates from tables, etc. We enjoyed it. We would definitely come back and would recommend. read more

Great addition to a great town! Meximodo is just as beautiful in person as it is online. My husband and I really enjoyed our experience. The drinks were great (the Mi Amor cocktail was my favorite!) and they even had a good amount of mocktails on the menu. We started with the corn & roasted tomato guacamole which was AMAZING! Our tacos were not as good as we had hoped, the pork belly was very dry. We had been warned by a few people that the appetizers were better than the entrees and we found this to be true. 3rd visit review! We discovered Meximodo when our daughter started Rutgers locally and its been great! We've been there for lunch and dinner and have tried a lot of the menu. Our favorite is the queso fundito with chorizo that we get each time. They serve up round crisp tortillas with each meal. We've tried most of the tacos and they are all flavorful and authentic! We are just starting to explore the entrees and the red snapper and cauliflower Pastor are exceptional! Overall the service has been fast, friendly and generous. Never a feeling of being rushed and very attentive. The place has a great vibe, not too loud and is family friendly. We'll keep updating, as we will be back!! Ive been here mainly for dinner so coming at lunch today was a new experience. The popcorn that was given instead of chips was so good. I could have had more. With it being the end of summer, my friend and I decided to sit outside. It was the perfect weather for it today. My first drink was the El Rey del Sur which was delicious. After ny first drink, I asked for a surprise. Thats my favorite thing to do with the bartender and wait staff. My friend got a tinto de veranda. Our favorite app to order is the queso fundido with chorizo. Since I've been coming, the recipe has changed. I really enjoy the poblano peppers. They add a nice heat to it. I got steak and cheese tacos with a size of yuca fries. I usually get flour tortillas but the corn were really good. ORDER the Italian devil. The best way to drink it is sip the bottom before mixing. This was the creator of the drinks advice. I had 2! Parking is paid. You should download the park mobile app so you can pay while you are there. The cucumber watermelon margarita and mexi sangria were both equally great BUT my favorite drink is the Italian devil. Ill be back for sure! read more

This is the new talk of the town and fancy Mexican spot which recently opened up. The food and drinks made up for the long wait. The services from our waiter was amazing he was very knowledgeable and friendly. The street corn is a must try, they gave you complimentary chips with a few different salsas. The lychee drink was amazing and decorated with flowers. The spicy margaritas were on point.
