Um yuck!!! Coming from New Mexico, I know good Mexican food and this place is far from good. This place is worse than Taco Bell.

I stopped in for lunch and all in all it is pretty good. It is a good value for the money you spend. The portion sizes are large so you will not go hungry when coming to Mexican Villa's. My only suggestion for them would be to get a better salsa for the chips they serve before the meal. I was not to impressed with it. Only reason I did not go 5 stars. Also the service is great too. Terrible, I'm not sure what people of Springfield think salsa should be but this place is not serving good salsa or mexican food in general. Just moved up here from Texas a year ago ( this does not make me an expert in Tex Mex I understand that) and some the horrible stuff that is made in these places is embarrassing. We stopped in for dinner around 5:30pm today. The rice in our Mexican Villa Dinners was over cooked, the meat in the enchiladas tasted scorched, the tortilla chips were hard and the side order of queso dip tasted like it had been on the back burner all day long. There was also a thick layer of dust on our napkin dispenser. The plus sides were that our waitress was pleasant and polite, the guacamole dip was fresh and delicious, the beer was cold, the sweet sauce was yummy and the management was attentive when these issues were brought to his attention. I saw one member of staff that really made a positive impression on me- she was an older employee, dressed in black pants and a black t-shirt. She did not look frumpy in her uniform. Her longer hair was done in a well secured manner to assure that none was hanging down to get into food. She seemed to take pride in her job and her appearance. I wish I would've asked for her name. The others on that shift could take a lesson from her. We won't go back to this specific location even though it's been a family tradition for many years. We'll go to one of the Comida's branches or El Taco in the future. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. First off the place was so dirty then the tables, we sat in a booth, were dirty and also placed all messed up. Server took about 10 minutes just to greet us and give us chips like what? Our order came fast but the food was horrible. My boyfriend did not like his meal and rather than the waiter asking if he would like something else to try to fix it she made him feel stupid by telling him to go to Andy's Frozen Custard on the way home instead. So basically she stood there telling him how it's his fault and he should of ordered something else. Which is understandable he was the one that ordered that meal but it doesn't need to be said by the server and she especially shouldn't have made us both feel bad that THEIR food tasted like it was fresh off the garbage truck. Always my go to when I come to town. It is not what you would think of as authentic Mexican but it is a Springfield classic.

Best memories as a teenager is going to Springfield && then finishing off the evening with Mexican Villa! I hadn't been in several years - actually over a decade. My Aunt whom grew up in the same town I did (Hartville) had mentioned going here as a teenager as well. So accompanied by my brother an his family we all decided to check it out an see if it was still as we remembered. How in the world could you forget the burrito enchilada style? Droooooooooooooooooooooling just thinking about it. Covered in warm enchilada sauce & cheese?! BEST THING EVER!! An I actually love their sweet salsa. We loved having the mini jukebox at the tables. The food was plentiful, and good. Nothing spectacular. We'd come for their special, which both my friend and I ordered. I just wasn't impressed. Not much flavor, far too much cheese. The salsa was spicy, but tasted like tomato paste not salsa. The cheese sauce was quite good. The staff have never been a problem, they are the only good thing about my experiences here. The food has a strong chili powder flavor and the salsa is sweet and syrupy and that isn't even their sweet salsa (yes there is an even sweeter version by request). I have given them several chances out of peer pressure but I have begun excluding myself from trips here. Mexican Villa, does have a cult following who love their food. This group mostly consists of people born and raised in Springfield, but if you ask almost anyone from outside of Springfield, you will likely receive a polar opposite opinion. read more

This was probably the worst Mexican restaurant if not worst restaurant in general I've ever been to. Nobody greeted us upon coming in. Just kind of pointed to where we should go sit. Waitress was nice, but not the best. Upon seating us she asked "do you guys want menus" and we felt very rushed. We have never been here before so of course we needed to see a menu. We were given chips with no salsa that tasted like they had been sitting there for a hot minute. Finally we asked for salsa after about 10 minutes and were given a small bowl of sauce that literally looked like the consistency of ketchup and tasted like Taco Bell sauce with a few peppers. It was DISGUSTING. Menu is not diverse what so ever. I ordered to cheese enchiladas. I was given a plate of two soggy enchiladas doused and drenched in their version of enchilada red sauce. Couldn't even see the enchiladas it was so drenched. She was slow to fill up drinks as well. I will definitely never be coming back again. read more

I have been eating here all of my life. The National location was close to my Grandma Ethyl's home on Meadowmere. I love it because it is different than all of the Mexican restaurants that have spread from Texas throughout America. The sweet sauce is heaven but I buy the hot sauce by the gallon every time I drive through Springfield. If you like Mexican American you must eat here numerous times! I will NEVER go to this establishment again for any reason at all. Waited an hour to be served had to ask to have drinks refilled and finally after NOT getting our food we left. Upon leaving we were confronted by the cook and were told he spent 25 minutes preparing our food and started cussing at my wife and 3 young children! I highly recommend finding another place to eat that's punctual, professional and does not have employees who cuss out patrons for them not doing the job they were hired to do. I had the best experience at this restaurant. My girl friends and I went for a birthday dinner. We were seated quickly, and the waiter was the sweetest lady ever. During our visit a sweet man sitting next to us PAID for all five of us!!! I ordered The Burrito Enchilada Style, and it was AMAZING!!! Later, the server brought us free cinnamon sopapillas! By far the worst Mexican food I have ever had, and some of the worst food I have ever tasted in general. Horrible quality, worst salsa I have ever had period. The meat in the taco was like dog food, well I have never tasted dog food but I can tell you that a can of Alpo smells better then their beef. Mexican Villa has been a staple in the diet of Springfieldians for who knows how many years. The food is not that great, but it is consistent. Now, you might think that with a name like Mexican Villa they served Mexican food, the really don't. It is what I think you would call Springfield-Mexican. The queso is good, but the only thing that I will get and many will attest to this is the burrito enchilada style. Just pay attention because with that sauce on there that thing stays freakin' hot for hours, sometimes I think it's nuclear, it is so hot. I always walk away with a blistered mouth. The service is always good and they have one of the best fountain Cokes in the area. So if you want a Springfield tradition Mexican Villa is the way to go, if you want Mexican food then you might need to go south of the border. read more

The salsa taste like sweet and sour sauce from chinese resturantes and the staff knows it but "the owner loves the flavor so we serve it" the meat on anything is subpar its more reminiscent of school taco meat. Sunday was my very first time here. My wife and I stopped in after church to check it out. I will say the staff was very friendly, and attentive, the place looked very clean, they had some great 50's and 60's music playing softly in the background, and the portions were ginormous. For all of these reasons they get an A+. Now before I get lambasted for my critique, let me just say, I'm a native, born and raised, San Diego boy, and I grew up with very authentic Mexican cuisine. While the food as a whole was both tasty and filling, there were a few things I felt needed to be said, so that if the owners here see it, maybe they can address these issues, fix them, and give us all an even better experience. My wife ordered a half order of a burrito dish, and I ordered a full order of an enchilada dish (both beef). With the exception of the amount of food on each plate, I could not tell which order was which, they both looked the exact same. As we both dug in to our meals, we both noticed the bottoms of the tortillas have a very doughy and soggy consistency, and the meat mixture inside was rather soggy or watery as well. We also noticed that the food was overly hot. I scorched my mouth and tongue many times just trying to get through my meal. I don't know what their prep procedure is, but I think it either stayed under a salamander light way too long, or it was nuked before being dressed up on the plate. The beans were a bit on the overly salty side, and the rice seemed dry. Like I said, the presentation left some to be desired as well. They both looked like the exact same meal. Other than this, we enjoyed our visit here, and I think that we will add this place to our after church lunch group rotation. I just hope the criticism given will be used to better things, so that when we do return, the 3 star review, can be proudly turned into a 5 star review. This is a great place to go for a quick lunch. If you're expecting an "authentic" Mexican food experience, you might be slightly disappointed as the fine folks here serve up some good ol Tex-Mex cuisine. The atmosphere is welcoming, and it is clear that many of the patrons are regulars. The staff is always pleasant and polite, and the speed at which your food comes out is always impressive. The food won't blow you away, but it's definitely something you'll find yourself craving at some point. My go to has always been three tacos, which I drench in the sweet sauce. They have a mild sauce, a sweet sauce and on the table there is a jar of their spicy salsa, so don't be deterred if you're not a fan of sweet sauce. Definitely a place to check out if you're going to be in Springfield for a while. read more

This is old-time Springfield MO Mexican food. My DH doesn't go for it but it is comfort food for this girl. The taco with white American cheese, the maroon leather booths, the freshly made tortilla chips, the Chico plate, steamed corn tortillas with cold butter...yum. Service is usually good, the National location is the best, most comforting. Oh yeah, those crazy booth jukebox things are fun too. I've had more authentic Mexican food, fresher and more zippy, but I keep coming back to this place for a dose of childhood. read more

I disagree with some recent reviews that "things haven't changed". Things HAVE changed and they've changed for the worse. Been going here for decades and used to like it enough to return on a regular basis. Not any more. Their amazing, flavorful, melt in your mouth White American Cheese was discontinued. Kraft no longer makes their special recipe custom for them as of at least a couple of years ago and it reflects loudly in the diminished quality of every dish that used that cheese. That's complaint one. Next, their hot sauce got hotter but is losing flavor. Spicy for spicy's sake is not for a restaurant's signature hot sauce. Their ground meat doesn't even look like ground meat, it looks like overly processed meat. The proportions of food (not that it matters now) have become smaller over the years per dish. They've been in business long enough and are busy enough to be able to afford renovating the older restaurants which really are getting beyond grimy. Nostalgia got the best of me and I wanted it to get better, but every time I would go back in the last 2-3 years I would be disappointed which resulted in more time in between visits - months. I finally gave in to accept that it will never be the same again. The food is not as good as it once was. Things don't taste the same at all, and it just keeps getting worse. Springfield native or not, don't waste your time. Go to Tortilleria Perches instead and start with the tamales, beef cheek tacos, fish tacos, pasole, nopales... well, you get the picture. read more

How many years have I eaten here? I think my Mom used to put the hot sauce in a bottle and feed it to me when I was just a tot. The place has performed some renovations over the years and has really tried to keep up. I would love to see them mandate the wearing of undershirts by their staff. Meh...husband loves the burrito enchilada style. I still haven't found anything I like on the menu. I've tried the burrito enchilada style, didn't care for it. The nachos are horrible as was the taco salad. Everything had a sweet "after taste" for lack of better explanation. Even just a taco tastes like the meat has sugar added to it. I don't want sweet tasting mexican food. They have a sweet salsa that's awful and even the mild has a sweet taste to it. I avoid the salsa completely. I've been reading and laughing at all the reviews that talk about it not being Mexican food. Duh! And as for the ingredients being subpar or going downhill all I can say is it still tastes good to me. It's obvious upon seeing the menu that it's not an authentic Mexican restaurant. But seriously, who cares?! It's ground beef and white cheese and it's excellent for a quick unhealthy treat. I'm not sure what people mean when they say salsa, as there are three choices. On the table is hot sauce, which isn't watery at all, and tasty and above all HELL HOT. There is also sweet sauce and mild sauce. The sweet sauce is extremely watery, but it's delicious, so yeah, it's watery...I guess (is that a bad thing? The soda is also watery, does that need mentioning?) They also have a mild sauce, which isn't chunky but does stick to the chip just fine. The chips are fried, and are often hot and always fresh (at least when I'm there). As for entrees I go with tacos or a sancho, pouring copious amounts of sweet sauce and hot sauce on both. Nirvana! Everyone else I know gets the burrito enchilada style. So come and enjoy if you want to really taste our lovely town. I do agree with the reviewer who would like to see a little renovation, especially to the bathrooms. But damn! The food! I'm a HUGE sancho fanatic. I love the thing. My boys and I eat at the villa once or twice every two weeks. We even made a small group called the "Sancho Eating Team" and we have different ways to prepare the bad boy for ingestion. love the place, Love the price. The service is a little shotty, and sometimes we get this nasty old lady with messed up teeth and it kills me, but i get over it when she drops the sancho in front of me. read more
