A beef chimichanga and steak fajita were acceptable. The usual flag salad included fresh guacamole. Refried beans and Spanish rice were fine, though the rice was a bit dry. There is actually an abundance of Mexican cuisine in Springfield... well, cuisine that's called Mexican. But Amigos actually is a real Mexican restaurant that serves true Mexican cuisine. A family owned and operated establishment, Amigos is one of the oldest such restaurant in town. The pride they take in the food and service is apparent; our waiter worked his tail off. The food prep was prompt, and the portions were generous. Considering the fact that the place was pretty much at capacity when we were served, the promptness really surprised me. I had the Bistek a la Mexicana; the beef was perfectly done, tender and juicy, and the flavor was wonderful. It was better then the last time I had the dish, and that was in Mexico City. The guacamole was yummy, and the refried beans was perfect: the beans have to be good for the restaurant to be good. My family and I are elated that we found this place, and will be returning soon. I make my brother bring me here every time I visit. The food is incredible and they have the best Margaritas EVER... make sure you order a skinny if you like the original lime version. The mango is absolutely beautiful and tasty as well. My 33 year old daughter said it was the best she has ever had. Good family restaurant. I did Taco Tuesday with some friends as a first visit to Amigo's. Busy place! I've been back a few more times because the 10 page menu is exciting...and a lot to get through. Some of the best Mexican food in this town. Great service. The owner Martino is always here cooking and checking on customers.

It's a small place & obviously popular. Packed at 6:30 on a Saturday night but fairly vacated by 8 pm. Service was exceptional. The three flavors of jumbo sized margaritas were tasty & adequate. The guac was good but not chunky. Wife liked the salsa but I found it the weakest menu item: Soupy with large chunks & mundane flavor. Chips appeared commercial. The bountiful entrees were tasty - nothing fancy but solid. The best dish I tasted was the cheese-stuffed chili relleno. Three hungry adults and a child dined for $100 with a large guac and 3 jumbo margaritas. I'd rate this a firm value but nothing to knock your socks off. Whether it deserves a rating as one of Springfield's top 10 Mexican restaurants is debatable but it's a decent, dependable choice - "okay" is probably a tad shy. You certainly won't waste your money or time to give Amigos a try...just don't expect "extraordinary". read more

My wife and I ate here the other night and considered it more Tex Mex than authentic. We ordered the Jalisco Special which comes with a tamale, chalupa, burrito, Chile rellano, a taco and the standard rice, beans, lettuce, guacamole and sour cream. My selected filling for the Jalisco Special was beef everything. The tamale was had an equal amount of dough and filling. The filling and dough were seasoned correctly with just the right amount of salt. I really didn't taste much other seasoning. Perhaps a hint of cumin? The tamale tasted handmade, so that was a plus. I think they should reduce the size of the mass dough, and it would be perfect. The beef burrito was decent. Again seasoned well and generously filled with ground beef. The red sauce that accompanied the tamale and burrito was not too salty and thankfully not a tarty tomato sauce. The chalupa is not like Taco Bell. I knew this already, but if you're expecting a fluffy fried taco shell, you need to seek elsewhere! It's really more like a tostada but generously piled on beef, cheese lettuce and pico de Gallo. The taco was perfectly crunchy and filled with ground beef, lettuce and cheese. The ground beef here is finely ground and not greasy. The Chile rellano is NOT the fluffy fried kind. It was however roasted and peeled and had a cheese filling and topping with a red sauce. The cheese was a melting type. It tasted more like an American melting cheese though instead of the fancier Mexican ones. The beans arrived with a smattering of cheese that eventually started to melt. However if the beans had been served more temperature hot, it probably would have melted more! The Chile rellano has that same problem. The rice was fluffy and no crazy dehydrated gross surprise veggies anywhere in sight! Yay! My wife had the chimichanga platter. Her meat was beef tips. I think they tasted off and perhaps on their last expiration, so I wouldn't recommend those. Or at least with the beef tip filling. The chips were nicely crunchy and fresh. No salt. Salsa tasted canned and the "spicy" salsa was not very spicy. I recommend skipping the chips and salsa and saving room for something else. In all, the food is decent. Nothing extraordinarily fantastic. I recommend if you enjoy something not spicy or authentic and miss that old Tex Mex food from childhood. The service is okay. Don't expect the waitress to keep filling your drinks because we had to wave at her to come back several times. read more

Being the poor college grads that we are, a group of my friends and I decided on trying out Amigos for lunch last Monday. We had heard rumors around town it was the best Mexican food place in Springfield (believe me.. this is an on going search for me. Being from Oklahoma, no Tex Mex compares to what I'm used to). What sealed the decision was that we heard Amigos had a cheap lunch menu. And it was true! $4.99 Lunch fajitas. That's all I need to say. 4 out of the 5 people in our group ordered them... and even the 5th person enjoyed the fajitas more than his own meal. Though this was still not the best Mexican food I've had in town or ever.. I can def say the food matched the price splendidly! The atmosphere was quaintly enjoyable and the service was great and very quick. I can't wait to go back and take advantage of their happy hour. I hear their Margaritas are the best in town.. 3 1/2 stars on the Mexican Comfort Food Goodness Scale. 4 stars on the Cheap Eats Scale 5 stars on the Fast Food Mex Scale 1 star on the Fresh/Healthy Mex Scale If you've been following me on Yelp, you know Kathy and I have been looking for a GOOD Mexican place in Portland. They are hard to find there. So, this week I'm on a Huge Road Trip from Portland to Springfield, MO and Chicago. I've continued the hunt for a Mexican place one could call home. Local Yelpers led me to 2 places in SGF that sounded great-- First was Tortilleria Perches which unfortunately was closed-- Their homemade tortillas and chips attracted me. The second was Amigos. I purposefully was looking for something a little more cozy, family owned and less franchisee. At Amigos, service was very fast and friendly-- my food came out almost instantly. Essentially Amigos is a Fast Mex place doubling as sit down Mexican. ADVANTAGE- you get hot (and good) food FAST DISADVANTAGE- Though they try, there really isn't a homey Mexican Ambiance going. Kinda feels like a nice sit down service cafeteria. The menus scream franchise, but the food was much better than I expected. I ordered "Enchiladas Ranchero" off the Specialties section- Three chicken enchiladas simmered in green tomatillo sauce, topped with lettuce, sour cream and pico de gallo. Rice comes on the side (without beans.) I also ordered two carnitas tacos on the side- pork cubes simmered in a tasty sauce, and a side of refried beans. These were garnished with white queso fresca. My meal was actually very tasty, possibly a little saltier than some may like. I'd recommend all three items. Be aware the soft tacos are served authentic 'street' style, so don't expect a taco stuffed with extras. They would be better I think if served in a double soft tortilla. Amigos beans are GREAT, which is a good sign suggesting everything else is pretty good too. Tasty Beans also probably mean there's Lard in there- but if you want super tasty Comfort Mex you need to be prepared to say "Bring it ON" to the cholesterol. Their chips were nothing special, nor their red salsa. It was quite mild, tasting of a canned tomato sauce base that actually reminded me a little of Ketchup. All in all however, this is a good place to eat and I will return when I'm in SGF. So Bottom Line-- If you want a quick Comfort Mex meal at a super cheap price that actually tastes good, Amigos should become a regular stop for you. read more

The prices are so cheap that you'll question the quality, until your plate of hot deliciousness arrives at your table, and all of your worries are put to rest. Amigos is a great place for flavorful Mexican fare. When I walked in I wasn't sure because it's quite small and they had limited wait staff. My husband and I seated ourselves and there were many tables not cleared however, the food and $1.99 margaritas were worth it! The chips and salsa, on the house, were crisp and the salsa had a great cilantro and tomato flavor! I ordered the Carnitas Dinner which consisted of pork chunks in a wine sauce, avocado salad, rice and refried beans. All of which met and exceeded expectations. Husband had the Amigos Burrito Dinner which was a flavorful burrito with steak fajitas filling. We also ordered the Thursday special of $1.99 margaritas, which we ordered frozen. First off, I hate to do this to a restaurant during COVID. However, the experience needs to be known. Service was okay, food was bland, and the chips were stale. When our food was served, I look over to see a COCKROACH crawling along the wall, from the kitchen, towards our table. The server saw this and walked away. The owner who was in the dining area at the time came over to smash the bug and left without a word. No apologies were given and the whole experience was treated as normal.
