Amazing service, quaint location as this is the original location. My husband's favorite so we always stop in when we happen to be in town. Went 1/12/26 after a family funeral. Sad reason to have to be in town but since this happened to be 2 days before his birthday we stopped in on our way home for his birthday celebration. He always orders the burrito enchilada style. If you haven't tried it, it's delicious and well worth the trip. Also can't beat their amazing chips and 3 types of sauce (he loves the hot sauce), don't forget the queso sauce. With each MSU visit for years we have said we should stop in, it looks cool. Well it does look cool. We stopped just after the lunch rush Saturday. Most tables were dirty and it was a challenge to seat ourselves as directed. We found a "clear" table. However the top was as sticky as a movie theater floor. Ordered a house marg on the rocks and no salt. It was overly sweet and tasted right from the Daily's mix bottle. (well it is a college town). We each ordered the 3 street tacos. Each a different protein and all 6 were good not great. The fresh onion and cilantro may have been the best part. Ohh almost for the chips and "salsa". Both the hot and mild salsas were more bbq sauce than salsa. The hot did bring the heat. Just not a purée of vegetables you would expect in a salsa. Service seemed understaffed. But all worked hard with orders, delivery and clean up. My wife and I enjoy eating at Mexican Villa every two or three weeks. We went there this afternoon to have a late lunch. We both had the burrito enchilada style when was just about done with mine I bit into a gravel and I thought I broke my tooth, but I actually bit the gravel in half. After I was sure my tooth was OK I asked for a manager. He told me how sorry he was and would investigate and thank me very much for saving that gravel for him. After I thought about it for a while, I thought if would invite somebody over to my house and if they bid into a gravel would I have just said thank you I don't ask for anything, but I sure didnt appreciate his attitude. I heard about this place from colleagues and friends. Finally had a chance to get there with them. I love how cute and nostalgic it was(even the restrooms). Our server was at our table before we even sat down for our drink order(some of our party was already there). We all ordered a sancho burrito enchilada style. I did steak, very tender and very good. My favorite, was the hot salsa option served with the chips, so much flavor, I ate my entire serving. I was going to ask if they sold it, but forgot to when I paid the bill. When we went in we had to wait to be seated for about 15 minutes and there wasn't really anyone in the dining room. The chips that they give you are extremely hard and not homemade. The nachos barely had any cheese on it. I got the beef enchiladas and I did not care for them at all. The food just didn't taste authentic. The salsa was absolutely disgusting I've never seen any Mexicans make salsa like that before and trust me I made a lot of Mexican food. My husband liked his but not me. My refreid beens were burnt tasting and dried out and the enchilada sauce is more like a gravy and did not taste good to me. It was nothing like any red sauce I had ever had. The chips and salsa were not good. Hard bagged chips and the salsa is a sweet salsa. The Villa has been my favorite Mexican food spot since 1961. Service was good. Today, my favorite Sancho had NO cheese, and I was forced to sit through loud rap-crap while eating. I grew up in Springfield and Mexican Villa is an icon of the city. I now live in San Antonio and can say that this food is straight-up Tex-Mex. It may or may not be your favorite but it's a place full of memory for many Springfieldians. I grew up going to "the Villa" and it was a hang-out for me and my college buddies. Whenever I'm in town, I have to visit along with Leong's for some Springfield Style Cashew Chicken. My favorite dish is the Sancho Enchilada Style. Since we don't have anything like this in San Antonio, I've learned to make it myself but it's never as good as the original. I've noticed that they don't ask whether you want a half or whole portion. It looks like they serve a portion that's halfway in between. It's filling!! I also like their tacos, enchiladas, and tamales. Don't forget that hot sauce. Slather that on your chips and let your nose run! It's hot but has a great roasted flavor that's hard to find elsewhere. I was sad to see that the restaurant wasn't very busy when I visited on a Monday afternoon to visit a friend when I was in from out of town. It did give us a chance to visit without a lot of noise. The waitstaff was pleasant and checked on us once in a while but ignored us after we finished eating. Since the place wasn't busy we stayed a while after we finished eating and I guess we were cut off from tea refills. So that could be improved. Again, I know this place isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the food is decent, the ambiance is nice, a little on the kitschy side, and it's full of memories of my childhood. The fees for this restaurant are ridiculous. I ordered two burrito enchilada styles and the lettuce on them were close to rotten. The taste of the burritos sub par. You'd think spending $50 on a delivery order they would send you the sour cream and chips with salsa. Never again will I eat or order from there. That's sad. The margaritas, or rather Villaritas as they call them, is an insult. The waitress opens a small bottle of Cayman Jacks and pours it in a cup of ice, then they charge the price of a premium margarita. The food was absolutely terrible in taste and presentation. Sancho enchilada style. That's what you order. I assume the negative reviews are from people that order random stuff on the menu. I realize I grew up in Springfield so I am biased toward Mexican villa but this place is an absolute treasure. The building is old and feels like it could use some work but that is part of the charm. I really liked their Chile Rellono But what I got yesterday was nothing like what I got in the past I don't even think it actually was made at MV It sure wasn't made fresh when I order it! I cut my teeth (not literally) on Mexican Villa chips on National before the other locations sprouted up. I grew up eating their free chips & the (long gone jar w/spoon of) still exceptional hot sauce (not "salsa") with a glass of water, constantly refilling it from the pitcher (that used to reside on every table) to douse the flames in my mouth. My buddies & I would eat, burn, drown ourselves & listen to the old juke box when we had a couple of quarters to rub together. When it got busy, the kindly waitress firmly cut off our chips & kicked us moochers out. Three generations of my family ate there - crammed into the big corner booth - and still eat there when they're back home out of nostalgia. I see a lot of reviewers with Springfield roots defend MV, referring to it as an "icon": A perfect use of the term as The Villa was the only purely Mexican eatery in town. It's a rather sad exercise of denial but MV deserves the loyalty. The Burrito Enchilada-style remains a classic with a crunchy taco on the side (when we could agree to split an order of 3!). The enchilada sauce is still divine despite my branching out to newer, tastier, more traditional Tex-Mex food in Springfield, among which MV doesn't really even rate... When nostalgia strikes or my family demands it, I return to The Villa though now it's a half order, skipping the taco, & mixing the hot sauce with the sweet sauce. We use to live in Springfield growing up and always went to Mexican Villa. Everytime we come to Springfield (twice a year) we eat there. We stopped today and was disappointed. Food was not good they are not close to being real authentic Mexican food I had a chile relleno and it was awful the bean and rice were just not it. Coming here is like stepping back into yesteryear. And that's not a good thing. The "Mexican" food they serve is straight out of the 1950s--literally. The menu was developed by the original owner, a local pilot, after he tasted Tex-Mex in San Antonio, and the recipes proudly haven't changed in the interim. Note I didn't say that the recipes haven't changed from the owner's abuelita--nope; they haven't changed from the owner's recollection of Tex-Mex he encountered while learning to fly, filtered through the ingredients available in the 1950s and served to a clientele that had never before been exposed to Mexican food. If you read the reviews, you'll notice they're all either five-star reviews from locals who have grown up eating here and one- or two-star reviews from people who have moved to the area. That about sums it up. The place was packed, but nearly everyone who walked in answered "no" when the waitresses asked, "Need a menu?" It's actually a bit of a sad reflection on the quality of the average local's palate that it's so popular. It doesn't give me a lot of hope that Springfield will ever develop anything remotely resembling an actual creative food scene. If your idea of taco night at home is stale grocery store shells, a can of Old El Paso beans, shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes, and an entire 10-pound bag of pre-shredded cheese, you'll love this place. If you have even the slightest appreciation for anything less generic and more authentic, you'll be happier to pass on this place. It's interesting from a time-capsule perspective of how people ate half a century ago, but beyond that, it's just objectively not very good. Fortunately, Springfield finally now has several pretty decent and authentic Mexican places (my current favorite is Cesar's Old Mexico). Two stars, not one, because it's not actually disgusting or inedible, just bland and uninspiring. If you're forced to come here with friends, at least you can pretend to eat your plate. read more

Fore warning! I am biased to this place. This was a hometown favorite of mine and I still love it. Every time I pass through Springfield I stop. The traditional cheese dip is the perfect amount of spice and creamy. You have to mix it with their sweet taco sauce to get the full effect and you won't regret it. The fan favorites are their sancho enchilada style which features a huge meat stuffed tortilla with lettuce and cheese covered with a red sauce and cheese. You can also get this same thing without the sauce which is what I normally do. Then I spread the cheese sauce on top. It's perfection. Anther am favorite is the Sancho burrito style which has beans inside. This time I also ordered beans and rice with us and was blown away by the Spanish rice. It was very very tasty. Mexican Villa is about as authentic mexican as Cashew Chicken is authentic Chinese but these are my first 2 stops when come to Springfield. The burrito enchilada style from Mexican Villa tastes like good times. The tacos are good as well, something about the lettuce, love the guacamole and OMG apple pie with melted cheese! There is a jukebox on the table, cheesy sombreros on the wall and they only serve 3.2 beer. The service is sweet and friendly just like the sauce on the table. They have not change one thing in this place for about 50 years. My cousin makes her own enchiladas but uses their sauce. Its good enough for Brad Pitt and its good enough for me.
