Easily one of the best spots for Mexican in the 417. Clean restaurant, attentive service and super fresh ingredients. Piping hot, freshly made chips and salsa are fantastic. I normally get the Churrasco which is super seasoned and tender thanks to the unique preparation. The "chimichurri pesto" is different and not really a traditional parsley-based chimichurri, it's more of a salsa. The only negatives are the restaurant is small so it can get very loud and busy inside. Also the sides like pinto beans and rice they serve are very underwhelming and I would love to see a black bean alternative. read more

Food was bland! Asked for jalapeños and they brought chilis. Did not know what a Michelada was. Went and asked and came back and said they had no Bloody Mary mix. We got the street corn appetizer and it was corn and sour cream. Refried beans thin, watery and flavorless. Birria tacos were plain street tacos without any sauce or juice. If this is modern Mexican, take me back to the good old days, when food had flavor. My son stated school cafeteria food had more flavor. Good grief. read more

This is my third trip to Springfield and my third visit to Catrinas Modern Mexican. Love the atmosphere they created. Food was on point, cocktails were outstanding (taste, presentation, and strength), and their sopapilla cheesecake would have been worth the trip by itself. I've had the Tacos Del Mar, Chile Verde burrito, and the enchiladas and all were worth ordering. Bartenders each visit were solid and no issues with wait times etc. Overall -Good prices and pretty darn good Mexican food (I'm from Texas) If I visit Springfield for a fourth time I'll be stopping by Catrinas. read more

Came here because I was craving some good mexican food and a margarita; I saw the pictures that were on here and decided the food looked (key word: looked) good enough for me to try it. So I order the chicken fajitas and ask for my chicken to be well done. It was no one in there when I was there so the food came out fast. For one thing, there was no separate sour cream for me to put in my fajitas, no cheese came with it either. So I guess they expected me to eat this plain a** fajita with no flavor basically. The chicken was absolutely NOT well done like I asked. I didn't want to tell my waiter to take it back because he was nice and I didn't want him to go through all that. Anyway, they have no frozen margaritas, they're all on the rocks which was ok, I mean luckily the marg I got was good (hibiscus). So that's the only plus so far. I sat there and ate the fajitas because I was hungry/hadn't eaten all day. I'm used to cheese and separate sour cream; not sour cream drizzled on old lettuce they expect me to eat. AND they only initially give you 2 tortillas. I had to ask for more. So overall the food was mediocre. It looks good on the pic I posted but for me and my tastebuds, personally, it was a DEFINITE NO for me. THE OTHER PROBLEM I HAD, was that NO ONE but maybe 2 people in the whole restaurant had masks on. And I don't want to hear all that bull about "cOviD nUmbErS aRe gOinG dOwn" because my friends mother in law JUST got it and she feels horrible. NO ONE who walked in had a mask, and none of the employees said ANYTHING to these patrons/customers....like NOTHING. AT ALL. Just went right ahead and sat them. It's really annoying and disheartening when people feel they're above protecting the public like that doesn't include they're loved ones and family. People behind the bar weren't wearing masks, it was absolutely ridiculous. I don't even want to know if the cooks had them on or not but my guess is FUCK NO. I'm from St. Louis and everyone is pretty compliant there with the masks, even though it's sort of a conspiracy, borderline hillbilly town, so I'm sure people would love to not wear masks but for the most part people do. I have never seen such selfish people and people who think they're above protecting other people....a social contract if you will. but rant over long story short .....I'm never coming back here :) read more

At least for me I never think let's go to a Mexican restaurant to have a steak, until now. I love Mexican food, and this place does not disappoint. First things first. The House (on the rocks) margaritas were pretty good and not very expensive... $5 or $6. They have a slew of Mexican beers on tap and a pretty well stocked bar. The chips and hot sauce were good. The wait staff brought out a more spicy sauce when I commented the original was not really hot. The replacement was tasty, with a Smokey flavor. I always order the nachos when trying out new Mexican places and the wife goes with the enchiladas. I really liked the fajita meat and the carnitas meat on the nachos. The enchiladas were really good. Prices are super reasonable, I would have been OK paying more. They did a nice job on the finish out, so it can totally be a date place. Staff was fantastic. You can tell it is a family run place. Of all the Mexican food places in Springfield, this place is definitely on my top 3 list. read more

This new Mexican Cantina is sure to be the hottest new restaurant in Springfield! The inside decour is trendy and warm and the wait staff was absolutely excellent! We stopped in for a quick lunch and I had the sopas, my first experience with this dish. It was very flavorful, and the chips, salsa, and queso are my new favorites! I just don't get it. I've tried twice and both times it was ok. So don't get what the hype is about. Tables are lined up on side walls back by bathrooms. Nothing cool bout set up except for bar in front. Food was ok. Nothing great and I asked everyone in my party and they said the same. Drinks did look good and our server was very nice. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. We made reservations for outdoor seating, which had great spacing and looked very nice. Our waiter, from Mexico City, vouched for the authenticity of the cuisine. The presentation of the meals was beautiful, and the food was all delicious. 1. The waitstaff was courteous, helpful, and more than willing to spend the time it took to make our meal enjoyable. Our waiter was funny and thorough. Everybody we saw working seemed to be having a good day. 2. Get the fried plantains. 3. The pork carnitas were amazing! The presentation of the food was spectacular. Nothing slopped on a plate. No sauce drizzle out of place. The rice was tender, yummy, and had little nuggets of corn. The charro beans, OMG!!!! Break out the dipping tortillas and grab your spoon! This was a fantastic meal. 4. The salsa was yummy. The chips were tender and delightful. The hot salsa was (per my husband) really nice, with the heat balanced by a nice fruitiness. Plus, we only had to ask for it once. 5. The food was delicious! I got the chimichanga and my husband got the fajitas. He likes jalapeños fried with the meat and vegetables and they did. He said it was the best fajitas he's ever had. He said the rice was moist and tender. It came with a cup of soup that was really good too. My chimichanga was very good. I don't care for rice so I asked for double beans and the refried beans are really good too. I wish they had flan because I'm sure it would be great as well. read more

I think I have found my "go to" Mexican restaurant! This was our first time dining here and after the whole COVID19 quarantine, it was nice to finally get out and enjoy a Family Meal together. I was concerned that we might not get a table, being Friday night and so many others wanting to get out of the house. However, I was pleasantly surprised after calling the restaurant at 5:30pm Friday and asking for (and getting) a reservation for 4 people at 6:00pm! When we got to the restaurant, our Server, Jorge', asked if we had ever dined with them before and we said it was our first time to dine with them. Jorge' was so patient and kind to go over the menu with us, give us a little background of the restaurant and the food they serve, as well as explaining some of the items on the drink and dinner menus. When we got our Appetizers, they were delicious! The chips and salsa hit the spot; the Guacamole was made fresh in house and had a good flavor with actual bites of Avocado - NOT guacamole that has been beat to death! We also tried their Mexican Street Corn. It had GREAT flavor! My only complaint was you could tell it was made with Frozen Cob Corn, which made it watery. The other appetizers had was the Queso dip. It had GREAT flavor, too. However, it was a little on the runny side. It was hard to get the Queso to stay in the tortilla chips. When our meal came, I'm glad I ordered 2 Chili Rellenos without the rice and beans, as I usually don't eat much of those sides. Therefore, having the 2 CR, I was quite full. I also had the Mango Margarita and it was VERY GOOD! My Husband had some kind of drink with Mezcal and Cucumber - it was okay, but probably would order something different next time. I tried his drink and agreed that mine was the better of the two drinks. He also ordered the Mercado Sampler. He said it was all very good, but he did not care for the quesadillas since they were only filled with cheese and no option to add a protein as a filling for the quesadillas. Overall, the Food was DELICIOUS; the Atmosphere was NICE; the Wait Staff was FRIENDLY; the overall Cost was AFFORDABLE. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO EAT!!! There were so many other items in the menu that looked interesting to eat. I am looking forward to returning to this restaurant for a nice and filling dining experience. read more
