I've been a customer for a long time, but last night I had a meal that was very disappointing. First of all, the chips have changed and they are NOT GOOD. I asked our server and the response was that everyone is complaining, so I know it is just not me. Then the bill came and I was floored at the add on pricing for peppers, etc. The question was $9.00 and all portions had been extremely downsized, in addition to less meat in the choices. Couldn't believe over 60.00 for the same meal that used to be around 35. To 30.00. They just lost a long time customer. read more

The nachos looked like they took over over done chips put shredded cheese on it put it in the microwave.(could have done that at home) Tea smelled like fishy water. Ok if you are from out of town, listen up! Mexican Villa does not claim to be Authentic in any way. This is local food. Springfield comfort food, that is beloved by all who grew up with it. You are all correct, it is not really Mexican food. Everyone eats the burrito enchilada style and burns their mouths off with the hot sauce. We love that they still have jukeboxes at the tables just like they did when our grandparents took us there. We love the brown gravy, in the same way that we love other delicious but slightly bad-for-you comfort foods. Keep an open mind, and if you want Mexican food that tastes like something you've already tried, go to taco bell, this is NOT what you're expecting. We know it's not authentic, but we love it for what it is. If you want to eat tamales, don't eat here. Trust me, just stick with the burrito enchilada style (that's the only thing on the menu that the locals eat) and be prepared for something gooey, cheesy, greasy, delicious, and entirely unhealthy. And if you're not ready for the hottest sauce you've ever had, don't try the hot sauce. There, now you've all been forewarned. read more

I will admit to a great deal of sentimentality for this original Mexican Villa location. I spent some time here in college, a buddy and I ate here often (he's passed on now) and even a family meal or two. It's really sort of "Missouri Tex-Mex" - so that's what you should expect. It's NOT some trendy millennial place with organic tortillas and salmon tacos. Almost without exception, your order will come from the kitchen piping hot ("top plate is hot!") and buried in a mound of melted crusty on top cheese. I'm not a big fan of the sweet salsa, but honest to god sometimes I crave the hot salsa that's as thick as molasses. They used to serve it at the tables in little syrup pitchers, but I dont think they use those any longer. Anyhow, my service has always been great, I get exactly the food I expect for the last 40 years. I usually go to Mexican Villa by the museum when I go home to see my parents... just because. I always get the same thing, you guessed it, The Burrito Enchilada style. It's great for what it is - a sloppy wet burrito. Yum. I like their salsa and chips too (free) and usually end up buying a bottle to take home. It's really inexpensive compared to other store brands. Don't go expecting authentic Mexican food, just good casual food. read more

I've been eating at Mexican Villa since the 80s. I only order one thing and that's their Sancho Enchilada Style dinner. The meal Has been consistently good since my first experience over 30 years ago. Visited Mexican Villa for the first time today. With all the mixed reviews I didn't know what to expect. Well, I was pleasantly surprised! Chips were warm and tasty. Salsa came in 3 temperatures..sweet, mild and hot. Mild was my favorite. The sweet salsa was more of a juice...not sure if this normal or not but it was good. I ordered 3 hard beef tacos..they were very good! We also had the Burrito Enchilada..it was good too! Service was good and staff friendly! Cool 50s vibe! Can't recommend Mexican Villa if you like Mexican food. However, if you're fond of Taco Bell, this place will appeal to you. The chips are good, but nothing is authentic--more like frozen food quality. Prices are pretty good, though, with dinner hovering around $10 for most meals. read more

Can someone tell me why this place is packed? The food was barely edible. Over-salted salsa, food that is bland at best, and long wait times to get served. We took leftovers home but no one is willing to eat them. Just a very disappointing experience at Mexican Villa. Did this establishment recently change hands? Seems like at one time the food was good. I can't recommend it. All of the items we ordered with chicken in them came with BBQ chicken in them. No authentic Mexican flavor in anything. The salsa is just awful. Dark brown cheese sauce looked like a bowl of dog food out of a can. There are plenty of other Mexican restaurants in Springfield, MO. I came here with my dad 30 years ago and as a kid, rarely exposed to anything Mexican, if at all, I loved it. My dad and I always Burrito Enchilada. It is good Texmix. American version of Mexican. However, after going to Mexico and having authentic Mexican food, I got spoiled and can't call "Mexican Villa" Mexican food. I like their food and I'm ok with the ambiance. Chips are fresh and their salsa is hot. My dad and I used to have contests on who could eat the most without finishing their glass of water. Lol. read more

Normally this restaurant would get a 5 from me. Today's 3 is reflective of the following. My go to meal is the burrito enchilada style. I've been a customer here for over forty years and this is what I order 99% of the time. With the change in management have come changes. The apparent change to this dish is disappointing even thought to the uninitiated it would seem good. The dish is less cheesy and less saucy than the original. It should look like the picture in the back dining room. It does not. The original dish had a sweet taste with the cheese that was in it and it was swimming in sauce. The sauce is not as rich as I remember it. This tasted more like Taco Bell than Mexican Villa. The Villa looks great, the service is good, but the apparent change to my favorite meal is unacceptable. Should management correct this I will happily try the Villa again and rewrite my review. read more

Not Mexican food, it's barely food at all. The salsa was pace, and the chips I'm pretty sure was bagged I could get at Walmart. That was my first red flag and I should have left then. The burrito I ordered had canned re fried beans, ground beef and shredded cheese. Nothing on top, no sides, just that and a daisy our cream packet. All the menu items are a variation on the same three ingredients: greasy meat, runny refried beans, and a strange-tasting cheese that I can't quite place. This is one of the first restaurants we ate at in Springfield, and honestly, it terrified us. Is this what food tastes like in Missouri? This is a local chain--local to Springfield--and there's like 5 or 6 of them spread around town. I know that locals like it. My friend Lance, who's from here, swears by it. I've heard Brad Pitt goes every time he's in town, because he grew up with it. Rachel P.'s review makes this defense, if you scroll down and read it. I get that. I'm not someone who doesn't understand local tastes, local traditions. I get that people go here when they're kids, eat it their whole lives, and this is just what food tastes like. Some people call that rooting for the home team. I call that settling. For this local-hero model to work, the food still has to be good, and really, this isn't good food. It's sloppily prepared, the ingredients don't taste fresh. Ms. A's review--again, scroll down--sums it up: They don't have salsa or pico de gallo, but this sweet, runny sauce to put on their thick, burnt chips. Who doesn't want a basket of fresh tortilla chips and the joint's own salsa in a dish when they sit down at a Mexican restaurant? That's practically half the reason everyone goes to Mexican restaurants, to get that hot, fresh serving of chips and salsa as soon as they sit down. This place took forever just to get us the runny sweet sauce, and when we tried it, we wish they hadn't brought it. The food is just sloppy. I usually always read Yelp reviews before trying a new place but we were driving around town today and decided to try this place without any preconceived notions, as soon as we walked in we both regretted this decision. 1) Not enough choices on the menu. It was either eat 3 tacos for twice the Taco Bell price or order a whole plate of food pricier than the portion size. 2) The sauces were gross. The one on the table was much too spicy, basically just hot chilis in a tomato base. We asked for the mild and it was so sugary, you were sick to your stomach by the time the heat kicked in (and it was still slightly warm). You can also get sweet sauce which tastes just like the syrupy sweet 'n' sour sauce at most Springfield Chinese restaurants. My husband did like the spicy sauce but he eats siracha on everything - no tastebuds - and my toddler liked the sweet sauce but...he's two. It was like candy for him. 3) So Americanized, I can make better Mexican in my own kitchen. While I'm not knocking Americanized anything, when I go to eat Mexican I would like an attempt at actual Mexican flavors and spices. Sweet sauce, bland meat and greasy beans do not a Mexican-inspired dinner make. Now, the wait staff is friendly. I like that there are water jugs on your table to refill your glass as you wish. The chips were warm and salty and the food was ready very quickly. However, I wouldn't go back here. Being a Springfield native I must say that I'm embarrassed beyond belief that Mexican Villa is a local concoction. The sauce is some watery mixture that involves chili powder, the salad is shredded iceberg lettuce. A hole in the wall with no quaint, redeeming value. We went this evening and were entertained by wait staff who were rude to each other in front of customers and patrons who took our seat ("Are yuns leaving?") while our tip and dirty dishes were still on the table. Sadly, many of my momentous life events have taken place at Mexican Villa: breakups, announcements of pregnancies (beyond the burrito babies caused by the food) and the legendary time my then 10 year old brother projectile vomited across the dining room on a busy Saturday evening and we found remnants of it the next time we visited...a month later!!! What to say about Mexican Villa... My dad is an electrician, and he wired the factory where they make their chips. He said that the bags of corn that were being fed into the machines had a big sticker on the side that read "Not Fit for Human Consumption." The toothless old lady with too much eye makeup a few people have referred to? My fam calls her "The Roach" as she seems to be able to live through anything after working at that toxic hole since the 60s. The booths with the weird jukeboxes, the fake fireplace in the back, the tapestries that would crumble into dust with a single touch, the super thin sweet sauce, the 1000 degree plates, the cheese that probably came from a vat from the government, and my fam's complete and total lack of taste or gumption to go somewhere new and better: all reasons I go back every time I'm in Springfield. read more

While looking for another Mexican restaurant we came across this one. It has the old-fashioned nostalgic feel and that was fine for us. We like eating anything non-chain. The food was good, but nothing that blew us away. The mild sauce was interesting enough we bought some to take with us. It has a sweetness to it, a little bit of tang, and not too hot. The server warned us about the hot sauce and we steered clear of it. The dishes were very sparse when it comes to tomatoes and lettuce. Prices were reasonable. Service was lacking. We waited for drink refills and our check for far too long. Then we had to wait for her to come back with our change. I'm not dropping the stars for it but it should be noted and corrected. Some customers are not locals and they want to get back on the highway so time is of the essence once the food has been eaten. Can't say I absolutely must eat here again but maybe. read more

Ok, I think the problem that most people who don't like Mexican Villa have is that they are comparing it to Mexican food. Let me be clear....Mexican Villa does not serve authentic Mexican food. It could be called "Mexican-inspired" but it is barely even Tex-Mex. It should be appreciated for what it is and not compared to the real stuff. That being said, there is no where I would rather have a meal. I have literally being eating at this place since I was in the womb and I still love it 30 years later.
