I came here for a work event for some drinks and appetizers. The first thing I noticed is this restaurant is very polished with a elevated ambiance and nice lighting/furnishings. Also, the staff were very attentive and kind. Our waitress was exceptional. We got to try some vegetable quesadillas, arepas, and elote appetizers in addition to the chips and accoutrement, all of which were good. I tried a couple of their mocktails as well. Food was terrible, second time in a row. I would not visit this location. Irving, Plano/Frisco and Downtown Dallas are great, this place is not - whatsoever. Fajitas came out, maybe 1/2 the serving of the other restaurants and it was lukewarm - skillet wasn't hot like normal, could pick it up by hand. Pico looked like someone ate out of the bowl first and we got the leftovers, same for rice and beans. Grilled chicken plate was cold centered, didn't eat it and didn't want to fight with the waiter... Hostess and server were rude, both younger kids that didn't want to be there. Waiter said maybe 5-10 words in total, including an awesome "what's up nod" with nothing said to introduce himself followed by "drinks?" Guy was caught up worried about how he looked, never checked on the tables around us. Got served our dinner with no silverware, had to wait 5+ minutes to catch his eye, he was busy talking at the bar with other employees (packed restaurant btw). Finally got our silverware...he was holding all pieces in his hands. That was awesome, no napkins. Ended up walking around and found a table with no one and took that silverware. Overall, this is the second time in a row with a similarly horrible experience - last time they had 2 waiters serving the entire main room and they kept apologizing for the slow service despite seeing the manager in the kitchen on his phone hanging out, multiple cooks standing around. Checked this restaurant for a girl's brunch! The restaurant is spacious and decorated well. Initially, our server was attentive, starting us off with drinks and answering any questions that we had. We ordered and it seemed after we received our food, they had forgotten us. No silverware with my friend's food so we had to wait quite some time. When wanting to place another drink order, additional wait time. The restaurant did not experience heavy traffic on the Sunday we visited so it was a bit disappointing. We made dinner reservations for friends visiting from out of town for 7:45 pm! This place was packed for a Monday and we had to wait at least about 30 mins even w a reservation- crazy! We sat in the nice lounge area, we had kids w us and didn't get any kids menu - my friends had to ask several times for waiter to get us. I have to say this may have been the worst service we have received here and it was so unfortunate bc we took friends to eat there, that never come to Dallas. The waiter was just really rude and you could tell he really didn't want to service us. I mean they were busy and he might have had too many tables but he was never around. My son had to go to bar and get straws for us, my husband had to go get a steak knife from somewhere bc our food didn't come w one I ordered the carne asada and I didn't finish it, it was not good today at all. The kids got the wrong plate and had to rush their food out. We had to ask for refills whenever he did come around and we were told to "give me a minute miss" man I'm just letting you know bc I may never see you again he would run out so quickly. I would not want him as a waiter again sorry. He would split check and my friend had to ask manager to spilt for her at that point we were done. My friends ordered chicken fajitas they never got their tortillas I mean I can go on about how bad the service was. Either they need more waiters or give them less tables I don't know where he went. He also said was stubborn about selling me the $150 Wagu steak platter - like dude it's just a Monday and we not that hungry. And w that service no way would I ever want to order that there I'll go to del frisco or Perry's not here. I contemplated even posting this and just moving on but I feel ya need to know. After my first meal at Mexican Sugar, I can see why this restaurant is so popular. The warm tortilla chips were very good, and while I prefer a spicier salsa, their mild version is still quite good. Oh, man, their pork chop is fantastic - really tender and flavorful with a well balanced chile citrus brine. The cilantro lime rice had a little heat - perhaps some jalapeño - and complemented the sweet pork well. I actually would have like some more rice, but man, that pork was the star! Oh my! Mexican Sugar is not only beautifully designed, it's also absolutely delicious!!! This used to be TGI Fridays, and Mexican Sugar kept the fire kiln in the corner from the old restaurant, nothing else about this space resembles TGI Fridays. My husband and I ordered the chicken fajitas and it's one of the best we have eaten. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Tasty, char grilled flavor, and moist/juicy. And their cilantro rice was truly a treat to eat! Our waiter was amazing. He was informative, helpful, and my water glass was always full. They use real glass for your drink ware, and I appreciate that as I hate drinking from plastic. And for my purse, they have a purse/coat tree they bring to your table. How fun is that! First, I'm always so impressed by the ambiance of these restaurants (I've been to the Plano and Addison locations). Next, the food always hits the spot. The fajitas are my go to dish at this restaurant and if you try their carne asada option, you'll soon realize why. The beef is tender and cooked to perfection with excellent seasonings. My daughter absolutely loved the kids beef tacos. She usually always gets a virgin pina colada as well. Today, the drink was poorly executed, with not even a hint of coconut flavor. Truly a great blend of cheese and spices. I had the salmon and mostly liked it. What turned out to be a common theme was the temperature all of our entrees were served. LUKE WARM. It really made a difference in the taste and dinner for me. Otherwise, that salmon would have been amazing. My wife and son both had the chicken/beef fajitas. Same issue. LUKE WARM. Every restaurant I've been to serves the fajitas on a steaming hot metal plate. It was a metal plate but just barely warm and their dinner was cold within 5 minutes of sitting on the table. I was served and charged for elote that I never ordered. However, it was soooo good! Then really the last act truly surprised me. We mentioned in the online reservation we were celebrating birthday. They brought out a birthday flan with a candle....then charged us. We didn't order it and I've never had a restaurant charge for something like this. If I could do a 10 star I would!!! My husband and I were out for a nice night out for Valentines Day! It's our first time going out on night like this in 4 years because we are very busy working parents with a 4 year old at home. We decided to try out Mexican Sugar because it was walking distance from our hotel on the way to improv! Pros: The hostess was very friendly and we knew with it being Valentine's Day we may not get a table before our show at the improv. She was extremely nice and let us that there would be a long wait until we could be seated due to reservations. Completely understandable. She pointed out to us that we were free to sit at the bar which luckily there was a few openings. The bar staff is beyond amazing and is there for their guests 100%! I had the best spicy margarita that I have ever had from previous restaurant and bars!!! The food is delicious and the kitchen staff is amazing at getting quality food to their guest in no time!!! I would highly recommend the Chicken Mole and the Carne Asada tacos. Chicken Mole does have a slight spice to it but delicious! The bartenders are all about being focus on their guest and engaging in making sure you enjoy your time. We even returned back hoping to sit at the bar again to try their Margarita flight. All three were well made with high quality ingredients and key details with flavored ice on one of them. The bartender checked on how we're liking the flight and made a suggestion to try one of them with a tajin rim. She was right! It elevated the taste of the drink that I can't wait to come back to have it again!! During our return we ordered the Queso Blanco and it really hit the spot for a late night snack!! We went here for dinner on a Saturday evening. Let me start by saying that the interior is gorgeous. It is one of the most attractive restaurants I have been to in a very long time. Actually, it is beyond attractive, it is beautiful. The restaurant is modern upscale but also casual. It is laid out intelligently. The bar is huge and centrally located, an attraction to the eyes. The restaurant is large but feels intimate and cozy. To me, this is one of the best features of the restaurant. The other thing that stood out was the innovative menu. There are the usual enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, etc etc that you expect in a Mexican restaurant. But there are also some gems that you don't see that often, We started with the Arepas as an appetizer. Arepas are usually a hand held sandwich, a round roll with fillings stuffed inside. At Mexican Sugar, they were served as four small round discs with brisket, Cole slaw, and a Fresno pepper on top. At $16 they were not cheap, but the flavor was very good and they were perfect as an appetizer that did not fill you up for the main course. Another item that you don't see often that we ordered was the elote street corn. It was good. The kid had guacamole and liked it although it may have been a bit too upscale for her palate. The wife and I split the carne asada fajitas. The portion is not large but the meat was seasoned perfectly and was, for the most part, very tender. They serve it medium rare which is a good choice and I suggest going with that. Unfortunately, the one piece that the wife in her fajita was either fatty or gristle and she had trouble chewing it. she did not enjoy it and I had to hear about all the way home. The entree comes with three tortillas which is just about right for the portion of meat. There is an upcharge for more tortillas. My main criticism, aside from the chewy piece of meat for the wife, concerned the drinks. I like my margarita straight up, which means it is shaken and served with no ice. At Mesero, which is the direct competitor of Mexican Sugar, they do it right and give you a full glass. At Mexican Sugar, I got half a glass. I did not even take a picture because it was embarrassing. I understand the thinking: this is the volume of liquid we would serve with ice, so this is the volume of liquid we serve with no ice. Frankly, the visual effect screams pettiness and cheapness. We are talking about adding maybe 1 oz of more liquid. I would fix that problem pronto. For my second, I asked for a Mexican marine to fix the half glass problem. It was not on the menu but they made it anyway. The problem was an incredibly small glass with no discernible tequila. It was a glass of juice with olives. If there was tequila, it could not have been more than a quarter shot since the glass was so small. I would not order that again, it's a waste of money. The wife had the same problem. She ordered some kind of non-alcoholic fruity drink on the menu with no ice and received half a glass. Service was very good. Our waitress, I did not get her name and don't have a receipt to refer to, was very accommodating and helpful. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. The interior is a reason to visit this restaurant. The food was generally good although the wife would not let me order the carne asada again. Service was great. We got chips and salsa that was really good with a lil kick to it. The place itself is really cute and the server was nice. Though I wish she had communicated a bit more. For example, we asked for extra tortillas but didn't know there'd be an extra charge which is fine it was extra. As a customer in general, i just like to know what im paying for. Pretty good food and excellent service by Alex. Love the ambiance!! Did not care for the warm hot sauce flavor that comes with their very tasty and light homemade chips. Delicious pork chop (tender and flavorful with a nice sauce on the side), very fresh marinated shrimp, and guacamole. The shrimp and corn tacos were too sweet my wife thought (tasted like honey added) and she didn't like the bland flavor of the corn/hibiscus tortillas. Disappointed in the flavor of the chocolate avocado cake - light chocolate cake but hard white filling was too sugary we thought. We arrived and stood at the entrance about 5 min. and not a soul came by. We finally sat ourselves at the bar. We were looking for a place that served piña coladas. Whatever they gave us only tasted like pineapple. The Arepas were lukewarm and the meat did not taste good, it really had a weird taste. I barely ate one. The tacos al pastor were not hot and the tortillas were too thick and hard. The rice was spicy. The refried beans and the salsa was good. I was so disappointed with the food.
